The Unwilling Sons are a Renegade Space Marine Chapter once known as the Sons of Somnius, a formerly Loyalist Successor Chapter created during the ill-fated 21st "Cursed" Founding from the genetic lineage of the Ultramarines. The Chapter was originally created for immaculately planned operations involving both protection roles for other Imperial forces and for devastating attacks where every kill seemed to be calculated. To aid in this role, the Chapter's geneseed was tampered with to produce mutations that allowed Astartes to glimpse the future though this ultimately caused a side effect of intense paranoia. Since their betrayal of the Imperium, the Unwilling Sons wage war in the Eye of Terror, brokering deals with other forces and betraying them when the paranoia settles in.

Chapter History[]

The Unwilling Sons hail from the feral world of Somnius. This planet is located in a relatively unexplored sector of the Segmentum Pacificus. Upon its discovery, it was found that the humans living on the habitable areas of the planet had little to no knowledge of the Imperium's existence, instead basing much of their civilisation around religious prophecy and worship of the god T'zan.

Due to living in isolation from the rest of mankind for millennia, the Somnians fiercely resisted Imperial compliance, waging a religious war against the Astra Militarum in the name of their god with many upper caste leaders claiming that Imperial compliance was the beginning of apocalyptic events that were described in sacred texts. Ultimately, the primitive world was unable to fight effectively against the might of the Imperium and all resistance was crushed in M32.

After compliance was achieved, Somnian culture was largely displaced in an attempt to indoctrinate the planet into loyalty to the Imperium. Notably, certain aspects of culture were retained such as the importance of helping one another and brotherhood which likely arose due to the harsh conditions of the planet. As such, Somnians were considered viable candidates for Astartes and were recruited to form the Sons of Somnius in M35, being formed from the infamous 21st Founding.

First Deployment;[]

The first recorded deployment of the Sons of Somnius was in M36 wherein the Chapter was deployed alongside regiments of the Imperial Guard to support the war effort against the 5th Black Crusade. Due to their unorthodox fighting style, only a small detachment of Astartes was dispatched, being used to defend heavy weapon arrays and military leaders due to the powerful ability of foresight possessed by the vast majority of Space Marines. They were also used in coordinated assaults against enemy strongholds, once again utilising the ability to glimpse into possible futures in order to precisely map out every detail required for an effortless attack, sending the enemy into disarray while the Imperial Guard mopped up the leaderless remnants. Due to their success, the Chapter was quite decorated and some believed them to be some of the few effective weapons of the 21st Founding.

Descent into Heresy:[]

The Sons of Somnius were heavily reliant on their precognitive abilities, believing that their genetic power was the greatest weapon they had against the enemies of the Imperium. However, it was known that the visions of the future only stretched so far, that in the long run, the Sons of Somnius were just as blind to the future as anyone else, resulting in them becoming increasingly paranoid over the fates of their brothers and themselves which was further enhanced by the familial bonds linking every Somnian together in brotherhood, resulting in the Astartes becoming more and more focused in increasing the power of their psychic abilities and largely becoming reclusive and distrustful of outsiders.

This ultimately culminated in their betrayal when the Sons of Somnius were dispatched to purge a Tzeentchian cult. Fighting with brutal efficiency, the cult was put down with little trouble apart from one fateful battle: When the Astartes had begun their final series of attacks, the cultists had sacrificed a great number of civilians and even some of their own to summon a Lord of Change into realspace. In the brief moments where the daemon was manifested, it whispered to the Chapter Master Sararonar, showing him a future beyond the reach of his abilities, one where the Sons of Somnius fought a losing battle against Imperial agressors

Notable Campaigns:[]

  • Quenching of the Truth (347.M38): This campaign was fought whilst the Unwilling Sons were still loyalist, involving a 3 year long war against a Chaos Cult known as the Truth. While there was little loss to Astartes numbers, the cult Demagogue did manage to sow seeds of greater distrust towards the Imperium within the Chapter Master Sararonar, which would ultimately contribute to his betrayal.
  • Somnius Massacre (999.M41): This campaign was fought against the people and guard regiments of Somnius when the Council attempted to test the extent of their powers. This gruelling war took 3 months to fight, resulting in the destruction of the Guard and heavy losses for the Unwilling Sons. This was arguably their first significant act of heresy since their inception. Records suggest that most of the survivors including Sararonar fled to the Eye of Terror after this battle due to their Fortress Monastery being destroyed by the Tyranid Bioforms that made planetfall during the event
  • Wars of Pestilence (034.M42: The Wars of Pestilence was a series of attacks launced by multiple Death Guard warbands against the Unwilling Sons, shortly after they fled into the Eye of Terror. While many Astartes were killed, a large number of Plague Marines were captured and forced to fight for the Unwilling Sons.

Homeworld[]

The planet of Somnius is a harsh and unforgiving one, with much of it being uninhabitable. Covering these areas are dense jungles of sprawling, flesh-like vines which spread towards sleeping people to consume them. Occasionally, patches of open plains can be found amidst the planet where vicious hordes of beastmen and other Chaotic life can be found. Due to the planet's recent teleportation into the Eye of Terror, the daylight cycles are completely corrupted, making the day incredibly short which in turn allows all manner of nocturnal horrors to emerge and prey on anyone attempting to conquer the world.

Base of Operations[]

Due to the Unwilling Sons' Fortress Monastery being destroyed at the hand of the Tyranids, they now conduct all their operations and missions from their Renegade Fleet that patrols Somnius and its surrounding worlds. This fleet is known as the Unwilling Wrath and survivors of its fury often report crews of hideous mutants as well as dormant Astartes waiting for battle. The fact that they operate within a fleet, makes it hard for potential enemies to find leaders as they are often scattered between the many ships of the Wrath.

Chapter Beliefs[]

Since the majority of the Unwilling Sons are under the Blinding, the beliefs of the Chapter vary quite differently from zealous Battle-Brothers to nefarious psykers. For the rank and file Astartes, they believe that they are still Loyalist and feel that the Emperor is their God due to the mental rewriting and the spell given by the Book of Deciet. As such, the battle cry of the Unwilling Sons is one that sounds vaguely loyalist, when in reality they are vile traitors. In contrast, the Council believe that the Emperor and His Imperium have merely used them as tools that could be rounded up and slaughtered when a replacement was possible. This gives them an aura of hatred that can be detected by certain psykers, which can often blind those looking into their minds. The renegades also believe that Chaos is little more than a tool that must be used rather than something to fanatically worship. This belief often brings them into heavy conflict with the zealous Word Bearers who seek to eradicate the Unwilling Sons for their blasphemy. This perception of Chaos being used as a tool leads to hideous experiments whereby Daemons are summoned into realspace only to be controlled by the use of the Blinding in order to minimise the risk of betrayal.

Another belief held by the Unwilling Sons Council is that they have the power of ultimate control over any enemy they face. This partly stems from the method of war that the Chapter specialises in, along with the possession of the Blinding. Due to this, Unwilling Sons Librarius members often have an air of arrogance which allows them to manipulate other warbands into serving them. This can be seen from the large number of Astartes and other soldiers from diferent forces that are used as slaves and soldiers. For example, many Plague Marines were captured during the Wars of Pestilence, and were exposed to the Blinding. However, in Tzeentch's infinite trickery, the Chapter is often taken advantage of by members of other armies such as the Traitor Legions who often use the gene-flaw of the Unwilling Sons to get them to pursue their own agendas.

Chapter Organisation[]

Chapter Gene-Seed[]

The Unwilling Sons hail from the genetic lineage of the loyalist Ultramarines. As such, members of the Unwilling Sons exhibit little to no physical mutation and are relatively stable. However, due to being a 21st Founding Chapter, they have unique gene-flaws that are unlike their parent Chapter. This flaw creates severe episodes of paranoia that can appear at any time. This flaw was inadvertently created by the Genetors of the Adeptus Mechanicus who were attempting to modify areas of the brain to increase mental capacity and tactical awareness. This flaw remained dormant within the Astartes until late M41, rendering the Unwilling Sons as mentally unstable behemoths.
