Brave beyond words, never withdrawing from a combat and always sacrificing everything to preserve human lives, The Pure are some of the most noble of all chapters currently in service to the Imperium. They claim to be the first successor chapter of the legendary Salamanders, and, even though the sons of Vulkan support this allegation, Imperial scholars see this as a misunderstanding or a documentation mistake.

Regardless of their true origins, the members of the Pure strive ever harder to preserve the lives of the innocent citizenship of Mankind's dominions. Following the Codex Astartes only partially, they are widely known for their agressive fighting style, favoring devastator marines above all else to deliver immense firepower to the battlefield, usually in support for lighter troops.

Among their training grounds, sargeants preparing neophytes to become full astartes have a motto: "Sacrifice is always an option, and always the first!". Although the battle-brothers don't actually use such reckles tactics, it surely serves to show how well prepared these warriors are to give their lives in defense of humanity.

Chapter History

An Ungrateful Origin

The Pure are suspected to have been created as a petition from the chapter master of the Salamanders, as they were the only Firstborn chapter to have no successors during the Second Founding, which occurred following the events of the Great Scouring in 021.M31. Records of this time are fragmentary at best, and what exactly is the truth remains unknown.

This chapter, although considered venerable amongst their fellow Astartes, were treated with no respect from the other firstborn and secondborn chapters, for they believed the gene-seed of the new group was diluted and flawed as The Pure did not show the same genetic idiosyncrasies - black skin and red eyes - of their rumored progenitors.

The Salamanders leaders argued that this fact was due to the new Astartes' lack of exposure to Nocturne's radioactive environment, but their warnings fell on deaf ears, for the newborn chapter were accused of being somehow tainted and possibly even mutants on the brink of heresy.

Proving their Honor

In order to prove that they were as honourable defenders of the Imperium as any of the original chapters, the Pure constantly participated in the most desperate battles, engaging enemies dozens or even hundreds of times greater than the astartes forces just to show that they could alone face any threat the galaxy threw at them and they'd survive, becoming stronger with every victory. The new chapter would also adopt an extreme reerion of the Promethean creed, becoming known for their selfless bravery and their attitude to readly sacrifice themselves for the protection of their allies.

For approximately four centuries, they were a fleet-based chapter, roaming the Imperium's borders, searching for anyone in need. Suicidal charges, impossibly long sieges, reconquest of vital territory believed to be permanently lost. No situation was deemed to risky for the Pure, and they accepted all missions with a smile in their faces and faith filling their souls.

Notable Campaigns

Chapter Organisation

The Pure try as hard as possible to stick to the Codex Astartes. However, due to a strange characteristic in their gene-seed, there have been no psykers amongst their ranks in 10,000 Terran years, rendering the position of librarian unachievable. Thus, fell to the Chapter Master the double role of both leading their forces into battle, and guarding the chapter's history. As a result of The Pure combat doctrine, they place high value in heavy infantry, never going to war in vehicles, which they consider a dishonorable way of doing battle. However, being fully aware of their propensity to self sacrifice, the chapter will also never utilize terminator armor in a fight, for losing one of these precious relics would place great shame upon the chapter's glorious history

With that in mind, The Pure's final organization is a chapter composed of 10 companies. The first 5 companies are composed exclusively of devastator squads, with the veterans allocated in the first company. The last 5 companies are composed of reserve tactical squads.

Another interesting fact about The Pure is that they do not possess a scout company where they allocate their recruits. This is partially because of their few numbers, with the coming neophytes being allocated in one of the last 5 companies which presents less battle-brothers, while these companies battle-brothers ascend to the second, third, fourth or fifth companies, and the one's from these to the first company. But this also has relation to their combat doctrine, because they also believe scouting is dishonorable.

The Pure possess only two types of troops, which are Fire Support and Battleline Marines. This is due to their inclination towards the use of heavy, infantry-based assaults rather than utilising standard Close Support Marines.

Chapter Combat Doctrine

Heavy Frontline

The Pure strongly rely on heavy weaponry infantry, employing a great number of devastator squads as their main battle force. They always go had on, crashing any enemy resistance, never gathering data from the enemy before launching full scale attacks. Although this combat tactic may put The Pure in situations of great disadvantage, their stubbornness, resistance and inclination to sacrifice assure they will never falter in a fight. Where the attrition is harder, one can surely expect this chapter to be the first to arrive.

Chapter Culture & Beliefs

Through Fire We are Reborn

The Pure ferociously follow the tenants of the Promethean Cult, especially the self sacrifice aspect of it. As a result, their numbers are never full, for this chapter is always engaging in the most dangerous situations in order to defend civilian lives.

Respect For The Forge

The Pure, like their Progenitors, have a great respect for master craftwork and artisanship. However, due to their prone attitude of sacrifice and great number of losses in battle, their Space Marines do not engage in craftsmanship, for losing such beautifully forged artifacts in combat would bring shame to a venerable death in action. The few relics of the chapter are fiercely guarded in the vaults of The Virtue, their fortress-monastery, only going to war wielded by the chapter master under rare and very special occasions.

Recruiting Practices

Noble origins

This Chapter always recruits its now members from the firstborn men of Tyrannide's nobility, mimicking the Adapters Costodes recruiting practices back on holy Terra. This has gone so far as to have developed a social and political purpose on the feudal-world, as the noble families' status are measured by the position occupied by their members in the chapter. The fact also made the common practice of replacing the astartes' names after entering the brotherhood of warriors obsolete and not seen in The Pure's traditions.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Pure's gene-seed is rumored to have descended directly from the legendary Salamanders. Although there is no documentation that proves it, the similarities between the two chapters are tremendous. The third founding group of astartes present slower reflexes than other space marines, as do the sons of Vulkan. They also show great resistance to extreme conditions as the ones seen in Nocturne, such as heat, toxins and radiation. Finally, it seems the defenders of Tyrannride can see in the infrared spectrum too, wich strongly suggests a connection between the two forces.

Notable Members

Commander Phyre T'hell- the leader of The Pure during the Iate M41 and Indomitius age, known among his brothers as the Emperor's touched for the many times he's sacrificed himself and, by destiny's hands, survived miraculously. A true tactician and ferocious warrior, he stops for nothing to see the enemies of Him on Terra defeated.

Lieutenent Victoria Paulum - leads The Pure 's second company in battle, second in respect inside the chapter only to the commander himself. His enemies describe him as a "reckless force of nature".

Veteran Protectoris Marcus - the single honor guard of the chapter, he was Hulton's closest adviser, friend and guardian. He came to give his life in order to protect his master's during the third purge of Elyneus IV, resisting alone a squad of Eldar to let his comparisons slip away with their unconcious commander.

Chapter Fleet

Contrador, the most famous example of Legate-Class Battle Barge

The Chapter fleet of the The Pure is known to contain the following starships:

  • Crymonger (Legate-Class Battle Barge) - It is the Chapter Barque and personal flagship of the The Pure and serves essentially as the Chapter's mobile Fortress-Monastery. Its main purpose being that of troop transport throughout the Solus System.

Chapter Relics

  • The Puryfier - An Asgal Pattern Mk Vl Heavy Bolter taken by The Pure from a group of corsairs lead by remaining members of the infamous Wolf Brothers chaos warband. This weapon was wielded by the heretics' leader, who was slain by an ancient commander of the chapter, his name Iost to time. The bolter was spiritually purified and, through the centuries, recived many upgrades, rivalling nowadays with some of the strongest weapons in sheer firepower. The bolter is carried to battle by the commander, each of its shells covered with carved prayers for the Emperor.
  • The Purging Flame - This pyre of green fire is located at the deepest vaults of The Virtue, never leaving the place. The astartes of Tyrannide believe this artifact binds their fellow bothers' fallen souls to their homeworld, assuring that they, when reborn, will have another chance to fight gloriously for the defense of the Imperium.

Chapter Appearance

The Pure go to war wearing fully white armor, with the helmets and backpacks being a metal grey, almost silvery, color. Their sargeants wear black helmets, while their veterans wear green ones. Veteran sargeants and lieutenants prevent a combination of both black and green, yet the commander presents himself with standard silver, but with an ornament that differentiates him from the other battle-brothers.

The Pure maintains a healthy relation with it's supposed bretheren, the Salamanders. They have even went so far as to offer unconditionable help in finding Vulkan's remaining lost artifacts. If the offer was accepted by the proud firstborn chapter or not remains a mistery.
