"Look around, brothers. Every stone that builds this mountain, every scar etched into your armor, is a reminder of the price of survival. We are not the thunder, nor the lightning; we are the mountain that endures them. Let your enemies hear the echo of your steps and know that where you tread, the ground will no longer be theirs. There is no redemption for traitors, no mercy for the weak. You are Mastodons. You do not yield. You do not break. And when their final breath escapes, it will be upon your weapons that they fall."
— Mastodons Mountain Voice Ambicatus Riccard, speaking to his brothers.

The Mastodons are a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter Successor of the Space Wolves, created during the Era Indomitus. Born from the blood of Leman Russ and forged on the savage world of Zekya, they embody relentless strength and resilience. Experts in siege warfare and shock assaults, The Mastodons face the Imperium's greatest threats with the unyielding resolve of a mountain, serving as an immovable bulwark against the enemies of mankind.

Zekya, the Mastodons' homeworld, is a primitive and hostile planet where colossal mountains stand as ancient sentinels and immense predators like the revered Tuhak roam its lands. This brutal environment shaped the chapter's culture, which venerates strength and perseverance as ultimate virtues. The local tribes revere the Tuhac as symbols of power, adorning them ritualistically with crafts and relics. This tradition resonates with the Mastodons themselves, who decorate their armor and weapons with tribal runes and stylized tusks.

The Mastodons harbor a deep hatred for the followers of Chaos, particularly Slaanesh, whose hedonistic practices and betrayals stand in stark contrast to everything the chapter represents. Their fight is not only against the enemies of the Imperium but also against internal corruption, as they remain steadfast defenders of honor and purity. Whether leading an impossible siege or facing the horrors of the Warp, the Mastodons stand unshaken, leaving behind an echo of strength and determination wherever they go.

Chapter History

The future Mastodons began as Greyshields, Primaris Space Marines who fought alongside Guilliman's fleets during the Indomitus Crusade. Recruited directly from Zekya, a savage world known for its brutality, these warriors were especially adapted to siege conditions and prolonged combat, both defensively and offensively.

The natives of Zekya were accustomed to surviving in the harshest conditions. Steep mountains, brutal deserts, and forests teeming with deadly creatures had made the inhabitants of Zekya tough and resilient. During the Indomitus Crusade, these warriors proved to be relentless in prolonged sieges, not only defending key positions but also leading fierce assaults against enemy fortresses. Their ability to breach and destroy enemy fortifications stood out in numerous battles, particularly in the galaxy's most chaotic zones.

It was from this lineage of warriors that the Mastodons were officially founded after the Crusade, with Zekya becoming their homeworld and the fortress-monastery Arx Titanus their stronghold.

Zekya is located in a strategically crucial position, southeast of the Nachmund Gauntlet and consequently close to the Cicatrix Maledictum. Recognizing the importance of this route and the location of the planet Zekya, Guilliman assigned the Mastodons to ensure that this critical passage remained open. However, in addition to securing the defense of this region, the Mastodons also conduct offensive operations, launching incursions into the Imperium Nihilus to ensure that Imperial forces do not fall to xenos or chaotic invasions.

The choice of Zekya as the Mastodons' base during the Indomitus Crusade was a key strategic move by Guilliman. With the Mastodons formed from the Greyshields already recruited from Zekya, the chapter represents the raw power of a harsh world and the legacy of Leman Russ. Zekya's position, near the Nachmund Gauntlet and the Cicatrix Maledictum, has made the planet an unyielding bastion to defend the routes between the Imperium Sanctus and the Imperium Nihilus.

Notable Campaigns

  • Bulcatus Krexus

War Chief Bulcatus Orr 'The Earthbreaker' and Chapter Champion Jaxor 'Ironbite' Dhorgol during the siege of Krexus, fighting to liberate and support the isolated pockets of the remaining Imperial forces.

Siege of Krexus (003.M42) - The Siege of Krexus marked the first campaign personally led by the towering Bulcatus Orr, the Earthbreaker. The Imperial High Command believed that the hive had fallen to a mere rebel uprising, something insufficient to justify the total collapse of Imperial forces on the planet. However, the Mastodons would soon discover that the truth was far more sinister. The initial advance was relentless. The Mastodons shattered enemy lines, breaking through pockets of resistance, liberating the last loyal defenders, and reestablishing order in the reclaimed zones. Yet with each battle, it became evident that these so-called rebels were far more disciplined, their tactics and fanaticism far exceeding any ordinary insurrection. During the siege, the true threat was revealed: this was not merely a rebellion, but a carefully orchestrated uprising led by cultists of Slaanesh, aided by the twisted Space Marines of the Dark Prince. The streets of Krexus became a warzone where the Mastodons clashed with the depraved warriors of the Chaos God, each confrontation a brutal contest of will and strength. But Krexus would not fall again. With unrelenting force and strategy, Bulcatus crushed the traitors, reducing their profane idols to rubble and exterminating their corrupted champions. The city was reforged in blood and fire, a testament to the Mastodons' fury and the unyielding might of the Imperium.
WOPT Bulcatus & Saghigo

War Chief (Chapter Master) Bulcatus & Dai Hakaisha (Chapter Master) Saghigo Goghai during the War of Primal Tide, facing against a large swathes of Chaos Space Marines from the ferocious Black Legion during the 42 Millennium.

  • War Of Primal Tide(015.M42) - With the emergence of the Great Rift and the return of Roboute Guilliman, the Imperium desperately required the aid of the Primaris Space Marines to combat the remnants of the traitor legions left unchecked during the cataclysmic 13th Black Crusade. The Phantom Prophets, an ancient 2nd Founding Chapter, awaited their Primaris reinforcements. Their call from the High Lords of Terra came with orders to head to the Imperium Nihilus in the Segmentum Pacificus. Despite the perils of the Warp and the threat of embarking on a dangerous campaign, Hon'yaku (Chief Librarian) Kanoh Ko'garo Fushugiri reinforced the flagship to endure the raging Warp Storms. Meanwhile, Saghigo Goghai, who had passed the Rubicon Primaris two decades earlier, sought refuge on a nearby planet to prepare their forces for the approaching enemy fleet. As they landed, the Black Legion emerged from the vortex with a massive war fleet. Facing a splintered Chaos force made up of World Eaters, Word Bearers, and Iron Warriors, the Phantom Prophets divided their forces. The Chapter Master and his Command Squad led a ground assault while half the fleet engaged the traitors in space. Over the course of a grueling 10-hour battle, the Phantom Prophets began to suffer severe losses. Their Honour Guard (Keigoban) was nearly wiped out, vehicles were critically damaged, and their numbers continued to dwindle. Facing what seemed like inevitable defeat on a remote backwater planet, the Phantom Prophets prepared to make their final stand. Their salvation came in the form of the Mastodons Chapter, sons of Leman Russ, who arrived with their full might to reinforce the beleaguered Prophets. Though Saghigo initially wished to fight alone, he welcomed the arrival of the Mastodons' Great War Chief, Bulcatus Orr "The Earthbreaker." Together, the combined forces of the Phantom Prophets and Mastodons surged into battle, their rekindled zeal and unity overwhelming the Chaos forces. The Black Legion fled in disarray, leaving behind stragglers who were executed by the vengeful Space Marines. With the battlefield secured, Saghigo expressed his gratitude to Bulcatus and the Mastodons. This alliance became a symbol of unbreakable brotherhood, a bond forged in blood and valor that would echo throughout the millennia as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Emperor’s servants.

Chapter Homeworld

The Indomitable World of the Mastodons

Zekya is a savage and brutal planet, forged by eons of violent tectonic activity and constant storms, which still rage to this day. Titanic mountains tear through the horizon, many of them capped with perpetual snow, while jagged deserts and dense forests are home to some of the fiercest creatures known to the Imperium. To survive on Zekya requires more than just strength; it demands unshakable determination and the ability to adapt to an environment that tests every living being to its limits.

Zekya is the home of the Mastodons, not only in name but also because of the giant beasts that roam its plateaus and valleys. These titans, known as Tuhaks, are reminiscent of the mastodons of ancient Terra. Gigantic and covered in thick fur to withstand the extreme cold, the Tuhaks are imposing creatures with long tusks, which they use to dig through the frozen ground for food or to defend themselves from predators. These immense beings are revered by the Zekyan tribes as symbols of strength and power. The reverence goes beyond mere respect — it is a sacred ritual. The tribes adorn the Tuhaks with intricate accessories on their tusks, covering their bodies with handmade tribal crafts, representing the spirits of their ancestors and the strength of Zekya. To the Zekyan people, the Tuhak is more than just an animal; it is a living totem of endurance, an embodiment of the brutality and majesty of their world.

Just as the Mastodons have become masters of siege warfare and survival in prolonged battles, the Tuhaks embodies these qualities in the harsh environment of Zekya. The Thunderwolves of the Space Wolves may be swift and fierce, but the Tuhaks are like the mountains that dominate Zekya: resilient, powerful, and unyielding, capable of toppling any threat that dares challenge them.

Fortress-Monastery

Arx Titanus, the Fortress-Monastery of the Mastodons is located in the largest mountain range of Zekya, known as the mountains of Mjordun-Verdaya, the place is considered sacred to the local tribes, due to the belief that the spirit of each being in Zekya rests upon the mountains to seek their afterlife rest, and due to this belief, the Mastodons decided to settle in this place, giving the feeling of protection to the spirits. In addition to already containing the defenses that a Chapter fortress could provide, the location provides additional security coverage, winding paths, dangerous beasts, extreme difficulty in movement and in addition to the mountain range's own peaks helping, Arx Titanus is basically an impenetrable bastion and guardian of all the Zekyan souls that rest there.

Chapter Organisation

Militarily, the Mastodons follow a tribal hierarchy, reflecting their primal origins. Each company is referred to as a 'Tribe', led by a 'Tribal Chief' (Captain), while the warriors are organized into 'Bands' (Squads) commanded by 'Band Masters' (Sergeants). At the pinnacle of the chapter stands the 'War Chief' (Chapter Master), currently Bulcatus Orr, "The Earthbreaker," a legendary figure known for his overwhelming strength and fierce leadership. The Mastodons' culture values both individual prowess and collective discipline, fostering warriors who are both survivors and natural leaders.

The hierarchical structure of the Mastodons compares to the system of the Space Wolves, as the Mastodons are their direct successors. The Space Wolves are known for their unique structure for each role, such as Blood Claws, Grey Hunters, and Long Fangs. Drawing inspiration from this model, the Mastodons have also adopted a tribal and personalized approach to their ranks.

Mastodons Hierarchy

The Mastodons have adopted this structure to reflect their tribal culture, honoring their roots while forging a distinct path for the future. Just like the Space Wolves, each position has a specific purpose and importance, with names that represent their unique identity:

Officer Ranks

  • War Chief - At the top of the hierarchy is the War Chief, equivalent to the Great Wolf. The War Chief is the Mastodons' equivalent of a Chapter Master. He is the supreme leader of the Mastodons, the one who holds the final command and bears the burden of the entire tribe. Currently, this honor belongs to Bulcatus Orr 'The Earthbreaker' or 'Titan of Zekya.' However, unlike the Space Wolves' Great Wolf, who is seen within his chapter as more of an administrator, the War Chief is the ultimate authority within the Mastodons, holding the final word and decision for the chapter. He is recognized internally as second only to the Great Wolf and the Primarch Leman Russ himself.
  • Tribal Chief - A Tribal Chief is the Mastodon officer who is the equivalent of a standard Space Marine Captain and who commands one of the 10 Great Tribes. Each Tribal Chief leads a tribe (company). They are charismatic and fierce commanders, always at the forefront of their troops, guiding them through the toughest battles.

Specialist Ranks

  • Mountain Voice (Reclusiarch/Chief Apothecary) - The Leader of Mountain Priests, this role belongs to Ambicatus Riccard.
  • Mountain Priest (Chaplain/Apothecary) - A combination of the roles of Chaplain and Apothecary, the Mountain Priests is equivalent of Space Wolves Rune Priest, they administer to the physical and mental well-being of the Chapter's warriors and also choose the aspirants to the Chapter from among the feral barbarian tribes of Zekya.
  • Great Shaman (Chief Librarian) - Leader of the Shamans, the most powerfull and experienced, this role belongs to Gevalthar Gharci.
  • Shaman (Librarian) - As sons of Russ, Mastodons do not have Librarians, instead the Chapter maintains a number of Shamans. Even though the Mastodons do not believe that they do not have psykers on their rank or that they use their powers, the truth is that the Shaman is a powerful psyker who believes that his power comes from the tribal ancestors of his home planet and use this power to examine the minds of all aspirants to the Chapter for any sign of Chaos taint or treachery.
  • Iron Priests (Techmarine) - Equivalent of Techmarines. Sent off for training at Mars with the Adeptus Mechanicus like all Techmarines.
  • Chapter Champion - Champion from the 1º Great Tribe, War Chief's Champion, he also has the role of leading the Mountain Guard in the absence of the War Chief.
  • Tribal Champion - Just like the Chapter Champion, the Tribal Champion has the role of leading the Mountain Guard of his great tribe, always prioritizing the protection of his Tribal Chief.

Line Ranks

  • Band Master (Sergeant) - Band Masters are those Mastodons non-commissioned officers who have the honour of commanding their group of 10 battle-brothers in combat.
  • Iron Tusk (Battle-Brother) - Similar to the Grey Hunters, the Iron Tusk are the seasoned veterans who have already proven their worth. They are the frontline warriors, masters of direct combat, always ready to protect their battle brothers.
  • Emberborn (Neophyte): The Emberborn are the youngest recruits, full of fire and ready to prove their worth in battle. They are at the beginning of their journey, shaping themselves to become more experienced warriors.

Specialist Units & Formations

The Mastodon Mountain Guard

Hjorr "Doomspear" Dhuro, A Terminator assigned to the elite "Mountain Guard" Honourary Guard of 8th Great Tribe (Company).

  • Mountain Guard - The Mountain Guard is an elite force within the Mastodons chapter, composed of the most experienced and respected warriors of the tribes. Representing the pinnacle of skill and dedication to the chapter, these Space Marines are handpicked for their heroic deeds, unwavering loyalty, and ability to lead in situations of extreme pressure. Serving directly under the command of the War Chief and the Tribal Leaders (Company Leader), the Mountain Guard acts as the chapter leader’s personal guard and is often assigned to critical missions that demand exceptional skill and unyielding courage. These warriors are tasked with protecting the War Chief both in battle and in times of peace, ensuring the safety of the chapter and symbolizing its strength and determination. Moreover, they often lead smaller detachments, serving as living examples of the Mastodons’ glory to other members of the chapter. Becoming part of the Mountain Guard is a privilege reserved for those who have repeatedly proven their worth in battle, overcoming impossible odds and demonstrating an almost instinctive bond with the values and traditions of the Mastodons. The path to joining this select group is arduous, beginning with years of impeccable service within the tribes. Those who aspire to this rank must stand out not only for their strength and skill but also for their ability to inspire and lead others. The final selection is made by the War Chief, who personally evaluates each candidate in search of the qualities that define a true member of the Mountain Guard: resilience, bravery, and an unshakeable devotion to the chapter and their battle-brothers.
The Mastodons Obsidian Elders

Kjorn Wintermaw, a Veteran Primaris Heavy Intercessor assigned to the elite "Obsidian Elders" of the 7th Great Tribe(Company).

  • Obsidian Elders - These are like the Long Fangs of the Space Wolves. The Obsidian Elders are the most experienced veterans who serve as advisors and leaders of small combat groups, often wielding the chapter's heaviest weaponry. Old with age and wisdom, these battle-hardened astartes are quipped with all manners of heavy weapons, from the heavy plasma incinerator, heavy flamers and heavy bolters to the destructive Multi-Meltas, these warriors are expert in demolishing enemy strongpoints from afar while providing support and cover for their battle-brothers to destroy their enemies. Many of these veterans are reverred and praised throughout the Great Tribes in the Chapter, for their determination and stoic demeanour may seem off-putting but they're the key to the Mastodon's accomplishment to securing a guaranteed victory.

Chapter Beliefs

The Mastodons are more than just a chapter of Space Marines – they are a brotherhood forged in the wounds of war, shaped by the brutality of a wild and unforgiving planet. Their philosophy is marked by strength, sacrifice, and honor, foundations that stem from their origin on Zekya, a world that molds its children with the relentless challenges of nature. These principles not only guide their battles but also their culture and rituals, which celebrate life and death as a constant exchange of forces.

Strength as a Foundation

The Mastodons' belief in strength is absolute. For them, true strength is more than the ability to wield heavy weapons – it is the capacity to resist, survive, and overcome the adversities of life. From a young age, the Zekyans are trained to endure the hardships their planet offers, from battling wild beasts to surviving in an inhospitable world. For a Mastodon, strength is not only physical but also mental and spiritual, reflecting the resilience and indomitable nature of Zekya.

Sacrifice: The Path to Glory

Sacrifice is one of the most fundamental beliefs of the Mastodons. They see death and pain not as punishments but as necessary rites to achieve true glory. The sacrifice of a warrior in battle is a sacred act, a legacy that honors the ancestors of Zekya and strengthens the chapter. Every Zekyan reveres the Tuhac, giant mastodon-like creatures that roam the wild lands of Zekya, considering them symbols of resistance and strength. Their death is a sacred rite that renews the connection with their ancestors, reinforcing the idea that death is an honor, whether in defense of the Imperium or facing powerful enemies.

Honor in War

For the Mastodons, honor is a trademark of their behavior on the battlefield. However, honor is not merely about following a rigid code, it is about the the total anihilation of any enemy or weakness. Fighters who show cowardice or lack the courage to face their adversaries are severely punished. The most feared punishment is the Ritual of the Abyss of Redemption, where the coward is sent on a spiritual journey of self-confrontation, meant to purify their soul, but often resulting in their death. This ritual serves as a lesson for all: courage and strength must be upheld, for weakness is seen as a betrayal.

The Abyss of Redemption

The Abyss of Redemption is a ritual of judgment and purification that has existed for ages in Zekya, led by the Mountain Voice Ambicatus Riccard, The Stormhowl. It symbolizes the ultimate separation between the worthy and the unworthy in the society of the Mastodons and among the inhabitants of Zekya, serving as punishment for those who have committed acts considered heretical and cowardly. Only those pure in spirit and loyal to the Emperor and the creed of Zekya can return from this ritual. Those who fail become fuel for the legend, setting an example for all who dishonor the chapter's values or its culture.

The site of the rite, isolated from other mountain ranges, is Vohkan Zyrekh, locally known as an active volcano revered as the "Fire of the Emperor" in the native tongue. It is surrounded by hostile terrain, covered by both hardened and bubbling lava flows, and inhabited by wild creatures evolved to survive in this inhospitable environment. The Mastodons believe the volcano is a physical manifestation of the Emperor's judgment, and its heat reflects the purity required to serve Zekya.

On their journey, the penitent, wearing nothing but a tunic and barefoot, must traverse a trail through the lava flows called "The Path of Ashes," which winds around the volcano. Due to the extreme environment, the journey is fraught with natural dangers and symbolizes the necessity of facing hardships as a test of conviction and willpower, purifying the penitent’s spirit through pain. The path is also monitored by selected members of the chapter, ensuring no cheating or deviation.

After surviving the journey, the penitent arrives at a cave within the volcano, a space that emanates suffocating heat and toxic fumes. At the center of the cave lies a dark hole known as "The Eye of Tuhac." According to belief, this hole is a portal to the spiritual world, where a mythical entity named "Vyas, The Devourer of the Depths" resides.

The penitent is instructed to leap into the hole, facing the unknown. As they fall, they must scream with all their might, proclaiming their loyalty to the Emperor and their devotion to Zekya. This scream is the only thing that can invoke Vyas's clemency and prove the purity of their soul.

Legend has it that Vyas feeds on unworthy spirits, imprisoning them in the depths for eternity. Only those whose spirits are pure can return, climbing back from the abyss as a symbol of redemption and renewed strength. Those who fail are never seen again, their fate serving as a grim reminder of the price of dishonor and disloyalty.

The return from the Abyss of Redemption is celebrated as a rebirth, with the penitent welcomed back into the fold with renewed respect and status. This ritual stands as one of the most sacred and feared traditions of Zekya, a testament to the unwavering values of the Mastodons and their devotion to the Emperor.

The Great Coliseum of Zekya

In the culture of the Mastodons, combat is more than just a military activity – it is a form of worship, a means to honor Zekya and their ancestors. On Zekya, there is a sacred event that takes place in a large rustic arena, called "Khor-Torak" – The Coliseum of Glory. There, warriors from different tribes gather in a series of competitions, both of strength and skill, to prove their worth and seek glory in the name of their ancestors and Zekya.

The Khor-Torak is not merely a combat arena, but a sacred field where tribes face off to resolve disputes and strengthen their bond with the spirits of Zekya. The competitions include brutal battles between warriors, strength contests where participants are tested in their ability to lift massive weights and perform superhuman feats of endurance, as well as hunts and confrontations with beasts like the Skaldris, creatures with a rigid carapace that extends from their neck to their tail, similar to the Fenrisian wolves. These challenges are not only a spectacle of strength and skill but also a ritual to honor the ancestral spirits and ensure that the warriors are worthy of their name.

The Spirituality of the Mastodons

The spirituality of the Mastodons is deeply rooted in their relationship with the land and the spirits of their ancestors. They do not follow the traditional precepts of the Imperium's religion, but instead have a sacred bond with the natural forces of Zekya. They believe that the land and the animals, especially the Tuhac, have a spiritual connection with the warriors, guiding them in battle and protecting them in their trials. The Mastodons believe that their strength and resolve are directly influenced by the spirits of their ancestors and the land they come from. To them, the earth itself is a living entity, offering its protection and power to those who honor it. The Thurrax, massive creatures revered as the guardians of their people, are seen as physical manifestations of Zekya's will, embodying the might of the planet and the legacy of the Mastodons' forebears.

The Mastodons' connection with Zekya goes beyond mere survival, it is a bond forged through the endless challenges they face. The brutality of their homeland and the harshness of its natural order have cultivated a people who are not just warriors, but an extension of the planet’s fierce soul. They do not see war as something separate from their existence; it is a natural state, as intrinsic as the land itself.

Their beliefs guide every action they take and every challenge they face. Whether in the heat of battle, during the sacred rituals of the Khor-Torak, or in the personal trials of survival that every Zekyan endures, their culture is deeply intertwined with the values of strength, sacrifice, and the total destruction of any enemy of the empire or Zekya. For the Mastodons, there is no greater pursuit than the unyielding defense of their world, their people, and the glory of their ancestors.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colours

The Mastodons primarily wear brown battle-plate with secondary light bronze on their shoulder pauldron trim and left poleyn (knee guard). The Aquila or Imperialis affixed to their plastrons (chest guard) is also a light bronze colour. Like their genetic forebears, The Mastodosn tend to adorn their battle-plate with totems and fetishes taken from the various predators of their deadly homeworld of Zekya, including the much venerated Tuhak (a large primitive species similar to ancient earth's Proboscidea, the same order as elephants and mammoths). These primitivistic trappings take the form of pelts, teeth and claws.

A High Gothic numeral stencilled on the left poleyn designates a battle-brother's assigned Tribe (Company), while a smaller High Gothic numeral stencilled on the right shoulder pauldron inset indicates a battle-brother's assigned Band (Squad).

Mastodons Shoulder Insignia

The Mastodons shoulder insignia utlised to designate the various battlefield specialties within the Chapter.
From left-to-right: Emberborn (Neophyte), Iron Tusk (Battleline or Close Support), Obsidian Elder (Fire Support), Mountain Guard (Veteran).

The Chapter's warriors bear these markings on their right shoulder pauldron and their Chapter icon is proudly born on the left. However, within these guidelines, there is much variety, as no two battle-brother's markings are alike.
