The Tempest Claws are a loyalist non-Codex-compliant Space Marine Chapter created in the 21st 'Cursed' Founding but after the events on their home planet, the chapter began to consist mainly of Primaris Space Marines and were joined by battle-brothers from other chapters. They have a large fleet but mostly small battle groups consisting of one or two battle barges sends far from their home world throughout the galaxy often working with the Inquisition. Masters of landing strike operations, weapon modifications and weather related psychic disciplines. They represent barbarian-like knights with a totem culture.

Chapter History

The Tempest Claws are a chapter that was created during the ill-fated 21st 'Cursed' Founding, but its main story begins after the cataclysmic events on their home world of Atlas Prime. After the construction of the Fortress-Monastery, it turned out that deep below the surface of the planet lies the tomb-world of Necrons. The tomb was soon awakened and all-out war broke out as the Space Marines could not afford to lose their homeworld, which they had gained with great difficulty due to the reputation of the cursed foundation. The battle went on for decades, and as it suddenly began, the Necrons suddenly disappeared from the planet. A small contingent of allied Salamanders, Space Wolves and other chapters were present in the battle. At the same time, the Great Rift was spreading across the galaxy and the planet was on the edge of the Imperium Sanctus, making it vulnerable, but the Indomitus Crusade managed to arrive and the chapter received reinforcements of Primaris Space Marines and some groups from other chapters wished to stay and help restore the planet. Also, the leaders of the chapter had to work closely with the Ordo Xenos, as the Inquisition became interested in the incident on the planet, but one of the inquisitors felt that such a chapter would still be useful to them.

Little is known about the chapter prior to the events on Atlas Prime. It was rumored that the original Tempest Claws Space Marines were created from the gene-seeds of the Traitor Legion but it is not known for certain even by the Tempest Claws themselves. The chapter was not active on the galactic arena until new reinforcements were received due to gene mutations, especially since all the old records about it were either destroyed in battle or classified.

Notable Campaigns

  • Charadon Sector Crusade (Unknown Date) - During Typhus attack on Metalica, the chapter Tempest Claws went looking for a dreadnought that was sending a signal on the chapter's protected frequency to secure and capture the dreadnought.
  • Gachi Secundus Campaign (Unknown Date) - A signal from the Inquisition caused a crusade group led by Chapter Master Kjarl to inquire information about the planet Gachi Secundus, as many xeno-signatures and unknown resources have been spotted there. Upon arriving on the planet, a full-scale war for resources was taking place on it, and soon flammable plants plunged the planet into a burning hell. After being wounded in the first battles and waiting out the fire on the surface, a second attempt was made to land directly into a large underground network of caves. And in the caves, an ancient city was discovered, now the forces of the Imperium are trying to conquer it.
  • Torthus'е Raid (Unknown Date) - Planet was at war with the Death Guard, intelligence reported that in the city under the control of the enemy on the periphery of the forces there was a defensive structure. Tempest Claws assigned a squad to take over the gun platform in the city. But due to lack of data or the enemy's rapid movement into the city, the detachment was pinned down by the forces of the Death Guard. Rapid reaction forces were assembled to help the detachment. Soon a massed force of Plague Marines also moved into the area, and the battle turned into a massacre. Although initially the detachment already took up a firing position, it was not possible to repair the gun, and soon the position was captured by the Death Guard. Due to communication interference and command errors, the order to retreat was received too late and only a few managed to escape.

Chapter Homeworld

Atlas Prime is an almost entirely icy world with high mountains. Due to the small tilt of the planet's axis, there are high temperatures at the equator and the small strip of the equator is covered by the jungle surrounded by the ocean. Beneath the surface of the planet is a Necron tomb that was emptied after a great battle. And that battle affected the planet itself, causing the planet to become a psychoactive place. The dead battle-brothers immured in the ice were frozen not only in body but also in souls, which did lead to the formation of psychic ice. Due to the temperature fluctuations and the psychoactive nature of the planet, huge storms are a frequent occurrence on the planet, which has influenced the culture of the local peoples and Space Marines.

The planet is inhabited by various dangerous and exotic animals. Many have evolved to hunt in the storms. And some animals also acquired passive psychic abilities.

Due to the planet's psycho-activity, the Atlas system is immune to the influence of the warp from the Great Rift nearby.

Fortress-Monastery

Fortress-Monastery is located in the northern part of the planet on a large mountain range in order to avoid the formation of storms around the fortress and easy access to orbit. It is a hexagonal white pyramid with gold accents, windows and sections, at the top of pyramid are the image of totems and the exit point of volcanic gases. Also at the foot at several ends of the pyramid towers were built reserved for battle brothers belonging to various totems. In the central part of the pyramid are large hangar bays for the chapter's vehicles. Inside the pyramid there are technical rooms, forges, an Apothecarion, and a Reliquary. Under the pyramid, the entrance to the empty Necron tomb, but no one goes down there except for the most ancient tech-priest, yet even the empty tomb is full of unpredictable mechanisms and dangerous technologies.

Chapter Organization

The chapter is not highly centralized. Although the chapter itself rarely goes beyond 1,000 Marines, they do not follow the Codex Astartes. Because of this, they do not have standard divisions into companies and often have to act without orders from the high command. The role of a chapter master can be performed by several Space Marines at the same time.

In addition to companies, the chapter is divided into totems, which Space Marines can classify themselves as, depending on their fighting style and cultural affiliation.

Companies

Tempest Claws, like many other chapters, divide battle groups into companies, but only the first three remain constant.

  • 1st Company - Veterans in white armor with gray accents of the chapter color. The Chapter Master is in the first company.
  • 2nd Company - The main part of the chapter in gray armor. Mainly composed of wolf totem battle brothers.
  • 3rd - Specialists in guerrilla warfare, quick attacks, destruction of enemy morale, assassins. In black armor with red inserts and an insert of gray colors of the chapter. Many battle-brothers in this company were victims of genetic mutations and have been subjected to heightened senses and mental instability.
  • The rest - special companies

Totems

Due to large reinforcements from other chapters, various branches were organized and battle tactics were adopted. Each branch began to be called a totem to which battle-brothers can classify themselves as, depending on their fighting style and culture.

Notable Totems

  • Fire Totem - Totems adopted culture and tactics from Salamanders allies.
  • Wolf Totem - a branch that arose from the influence of the Space Wolves and has the largest number of battle-brothers, it also contains a lot of equipment created according to the blueprints of Space Wolves.
  • Eagle Totem - Influenced by the Raven Guard and the White Scars.

Chapter Command

The chapter is currently managed by a council. It consists of: Chapter Master Kjarl of the 1st Company, Sven Captain of the 2nd Company, Ulf Captain of the 3rd Company.

Chapter Recruitment

Recruitment is carried out on the home planet from the primitive tribes that live on Atlas Prime. The natives usually cannot develop into large civilizations due to natural conditions.

Usually a recruit is given a test of survival in a massive psychoactive storm and his further training depends on how he survives. If the recruit is a psyker, then his abilities will open in the storm. If the recruit can stealthily avoid wild beats, then it is worth continuing to train in the same direction. If he can tame a wild animal, he can get into the cavalry.

Chapter Beliefs

Tempest Claws, seeing how their world could die, prefer to save the defenseless and civilians and respect the value of life despite the fact that they often work with the Inquisition. They respect the valor but also respect the tactical skill.

Most of the amulets refer either to natural conditions or to the fauna of the planet. And by many, the planet is considered sacred because of the spirits of the brothers buried in ice. They don't consider the emperor as a god, just one of the great people and their ancestor.

The battle-brothers of this chapter almost never remove their armor, except when they are alone and on their planet. Thus, considering that they are always ready, even if their enemy appears unexpectedly. But they can take off their helmets sometimes. Their armor is constantly decorated and modified by hand.

The tribes on the planet are unaware of the psykers, which has influenced the space marines to also call their librarian brothers Mages.

Chapter Gene-Seed

Since the chapter was founded in a cursed foundation and most of the sources about the chapter have been lost, the exact composition of the gene-seed is unknown.

Genetic Flaws

Some brothers are subject to heightened senses and mental instability due to genetic mutations. In more extreme cases that are kept secret and rarely occur, space marine transforms into monster from the shadows similar in shape to the legendary Wulfen of the Space Wolves. Usually brothers with gene mutations are sent to the third company.

Combat Doctrine

The chapter utilizes lightning speed strikes, deploying large numbers of troops and vehicles directly from orbit under the cover of the librarians psychic powers that can alter the weather to suit landing operations and massive aviation strikes.

The chapter often uses combat and reconnaissance animals from the home planet and cavalry.

Notable Members

  • Kjarl - The Chapter Master
  • Sven - Captain of the second company. Prefers Phobos armor.
  • Ulf - Captain of the Third company. He always wears a helmet in the form of a black wolf's head and does not take it off if someone sees it. Like all of the third company, he has mutations in the gene-seed. Wields twin Lightning Claws.
  • Bernt the Undying - Replacing the captain of the cavalry in the first battle with the Death Guard and did not receive a single scratch from the anti-tank guns. But the mission still failed.
  • Old One - The oldest techmarine who was at the creation of the fortress-monastery. Also helped in the search for a dreadnought in the Charadon Sector.
  • Zar Crowhelm - The Librarian who led the search in the Charadon Sector.
  • Einar - Cavalry captain.
  • Atlas - The Chapter Master's personal eagle with blue-greenish feathers is named after the planet.

Chapter Fleet

Tempest Claws have a large fleet but operate it over long distances in crusade groups of 1-2 battle barges that are sent out on missions or take missions along the way and may not return to their home system for a long time. What creates flexibility for special operations and lightning-fast strikes, but does not allow long and massive combat companies.

Chapter Relics

Psychoactive Ice

One of the unique technologies from which relics are created is psychoactive ice. From this ice or the energy contained in it, the chapter creates amulets that protect against the energy of the warp, as well as weapons whose strength is greatly increased, and such ice also allows to manipulate temperature and matter. And with the capabilities of this ice, it was also possible to create low-power warp portals, which depletes the ice and devices with such a possibility are very expensive and difficult to manufacture, but such devices have shown the ability to pinpoint evacuate battle brothers from the battlefield.

Vehicles

  • Leviathan Dreadnought An ancient relic Dreadnought from the time of the Horus Heresy was transmitting a signal from the Charadon Sector over the chapter's secure channel, so an operation was organized to find it.
  • Eye of the Storm (Gladiator Tank)
  • Corvus Blackstar

Weapons

  • Lightning Talon - Master-crafted relic blade of the Chapter Master Kjarl.

Xenotech

Due to close contacts with xenos, including Necrons, many different technologies have been obtained, which are mostly stored securely, but sometimes they resort to their use. Working closely with the Ordo Xenos also allows to gain experience with such items. For example, there have been attempts to turn Necron heads into hacking devices to access various locations in the tomb and hack regular systems, most of these attempts were considered unsuccessful but some worked and were sent to the Death Watch.

Chapter Appearance

Tempest Claws represent barbarian-like knights with a totem culture. Сhapter often accompanied in combat by psychic storms made by their librarians. Certain parts of the armor and coloring may differ as the armor is constantly being improved and decorated by hand.

Chapter Colours

The main color of the chapter is grey. Armor edging is either gold or silver. Squad shoulder pads vary but are either black or gray shoulder pads with white claw markings. The lenses are green. The sergeant's shoulder pads are red. The colors of the first and third companies are also different. Veterans of the 1st Company walk in white armor, leaving only parts of the armor and shoulder pads in the color of the chapter. The 3rd Company is black with red stripes indicating specialization but still armor pieces and shoulder pads are painted in chapter grey. Also, sometimes parts of the armor are indicated in deep blue, as it is the color of the Chapter Master or certain units.

Chapter Badge

White Claw Marks on a grey, black or red background depending on rank and unit.

Relations

Allies

  • Space Wolves - The Space Wolves often assisted the chapter and were sometimes mentors.
  • Salamanders - Helped rebuild the chapter and create weapons and modifications.
  • Dark Angels - Several times fought side by side with the Dark Angels successors
  • Ordo Xenos

Enemies

  • Death Guard - Several grim battles have taken place with the Death Guard, and Lord of Virulence Frank has often thwarted the chapter's plans.
  • Necrons - After the events on Atlas Prime.
