- "Though our home is now lost to us, we we will not waver. We will carry our fight to the stars, and we will not rest until our enemies are naught but cinders in the void!"
- —Kareldeck Arkos, Second Company Captain of the Stellar Drakes
The Stellar Drakes is a Loyalist semi-Codex Astartes-compliant Space Marine Chapter created during the 25th Founding, also known as the "Bastion Founding." Founded using unstable gene-seed from the Salamanders, they are plagued by a peculiar gene-flaw. Over-stimulation of the Ossmodula causes the skin of some Aspirants to ossify into scale-like formations. This mutation is both a blessing and a curse. It affords the Stellar Drakes greater durability and heat resistance when compared to their brethren, but greatly hinders their speed and mobility in close-quarters combat. It is for this reason that the Stellar Drakes prefer aerial warfare, using various aircraft and Jump Packs to minimize the detriment of their gene-flaw.
They originally hail from Taiyou, a Death World located in the Stygius Sector of Segmentum Obscurus. The landscape is rocky, volcanic, and teeming with dangerous fauna. The pinnacle of these are the wyverns which reside primarily among a group of volcanoes known as the Drakemonts. These creatures are extremophiles and possess the peculiar ability to absorb solar radiation as energy, allowing them to navigate the void of space for limited periods of time. The Stellar Drakes feel a distinct kinship towards them, and bonding with one is the final trial for aspirants hoping to join their ranks.
The Stellar Drakes are proud of their gene-flaw, and in fact they seek to intentionally trigger it in each of their aspirants. Resilience in the face of adversity is one of their most cherished traits, and a Stellar Drake would die before he would allow himself to succumb to pain. The chapter's morale nearly shattered upon losing Taiyou to the forces of Chaos. Having lost their heritage, the wyvern broodnests are now their most closely-guarded possession, housed safely within their void fortress Draco Obfirmatus. Chapter Master Kareldeck Arkos channeled their grief into unwavering fury. Now they fight for the singular purpose of keeping the Nachmund Gauntlet open and one day liberating their homeworld.

Chapter Homeworld[]
Taiyou is an inhospitable world, located deep within the Stygius Sector. The planet is tidally-locked, meaning that its hemispheres are separated into eternal night and day. The side closest to the sun is known to the inhabitants as Kajikouya, or "flaming wasteland." This desert experiences constant extreme heat and solar radiation, rendering almost entirely devoid of life. The opposite side, the Koushikouya, is a very different kind of desert. Absent the warmth of its sun, this portion of the planet is a glacial expanse, unbroken by any signs of life. It is only at the intersection of these conflicting wastelands that any natural life can exist.
This Katei, however, does not make life easy for its inhabitants. Winds, generated by the gravitational pull of Taiyou's twin moons, sweep across the landscape, slamming into the Katei with incredible force. The only respite from these conditions are found in the shelter of the Worldspine, a mountain range which splits the Katei down the middle. In constructing their homes on the Worldspine's leeward edge, the earliest inhabitants of Taiyou were able to spare themselves the worst of the storm's damages. Thus, they worshiped the sun as a destroyer to be feared, and the mountains as protectors to be honored.
Though there is not much life to be found on Taiyou, one species stands out by thriving under the planet's harsh conditions. Great scaled beasts, known to the local population as wyverns, live amongst the tallest peaks of the Worldspine. These wyverns have the peculiar ability to harvest energy from the solar radiation of the Kajikouya, thus allowing them to live subsist without food, water, or even air for large portions of time. Over the world's history, humans took note that the wyverns would periodically migrate to the windward edge of the Worldspine and ride the storm across the Kajikouya, feasting upon its solar storms in the process. Thus, seeking greater mastery over the world which they called their home, the humans sought to tame the wyverns.
After being reconquered by the Imperium, these humans established settlements across the Kajikouya, protected against the winds and radiation by great void-shields. However, these settlements could hardly support massive populations. Seeking to ensure their own survival, and wishing not to grow soft in their newfound security, the people of Taiyou took to banishing their weakest members into the Kajikouya. This was not always a death sentence, however, and any who could find a way to survive in the wasteland would be welcomed back with open arms, their strength proven and their will forged in astral fire.
Fortress-Monastery[]
After being forced to abandon their homeworld during the Invasion of the Stygius Sector, the Stellar Drakes re-designated the Battle Barge "Draco Obfirmatus" as their Fortress-Monastery. Originally a Mk.2 Battle Barge, the "Draco Obfirmatus" has been retrofitted to better serve its new role as the chapter's mobile fortress and command center. It is this ship which now houses the Chamber of Ancients, the Stellar Crucible, and the Tetsu Forge. However, the "Draco Obfirmatus" also holds a much more precious cargo, located within its once-active hangar bays. For it is these hangars which house the last of the Taiyan wyverns, and here that the Broodwardens of the Apothecarium oversee the care of each successive generation of wyvern.
