The Steel Scions are a Semi-Codex Compliant Successor Chapter of Adeptus Astartes created from the lineage of the stoic and unforgiving Iron Hands. This Chapter is located in the southern fringe of the Imperium of Man, and were created in order to specifically patrol that stretch of space and target Tyranid threats. These Sons of Gorgon are a fleet-based Chapter whose mobile Chapter fleet patrols the fringes of the Imperium, ever-vigilant for encroaching threats from the Great Devourer, and ready to meet any threat at a moment's notice.

Chapter History

The Steel Scions managed to grow to a rather large size, reaching nearly full chapter strength before being sent on their first engagements, being sent onto patrol and planetary reclamation missions. Their creation, however, is an interesting topic. Created due to a psychic prediction of "a powerful Xenos force, a wave of menacing doom", they were assigned primarily Xenos hunting duties, though in the hearts of many of the Chapter's Brothers, they knew Orcs, Eldar and Tau were not the real threat that had been divined.

Of course, the Orks were a plague, a menace, but they fought amongst themselves. The Tau were too absorbed in their "Greater Good", and the Eldar, well. They were too unpredictable to be the "menacing doom".

WAAAGH! Godkleavah - 803-813.M41

Despite their initial opinions on the foul Xenos, the Orks soon swept the chapter up into a long and bloody engagement. The Ork Warboss named Godkleavah lead a giant WAAAGH into the Segmentum Tempestus Sector, right where the 2nd and 3rd Companies were stationed, with the other companies patrolling the central and east of the sector.

The Steel Scions started rallying their forces, attempting to hold the Orks off in a fleet based combat but were forced to withdraw extremely quickly due to the sheer overwhelming numbers of the Orks.

Throughout the campaign, the Steel Scions regularly deployed on every planet the Orks landed on, assuming it had resources, a Hive City or manufactorum plants. Through a combined and desperate strategy of prediction, planning and orbital bombardments, the Steel Scions succeeded in halting the Ork advance across the system, with all four of their Battleline companies deploying on the planet with the greatest Ork concentration, forming a large distraction while the Chapter Master Illuis, first Chapter Master of the Steel Scions, deployed with the entire 1st Company in a desperate bid to kill Godkleavah in a lighting strike.

Alas, Illuis was slain by the Ork himself, and the First Company found itself being beaten back with losses, and the distraction force had no choice but to start falling back to the sheer number of Orks, flooding their retreat with promethium and setting it alight, scorching untold numbers of Xenos forces.

This may have been the doomed end of the conflict had not a notable force of Crimson Fists arrived, crashing into the Ork hordes with such rage and hatred that it made the Steel Scions look like mere mortals. Invigorated, and with the distraction line successful in falling back, the 1st Company redoubled their assault, ending with the 1st Company Champion doing what his Chapter Master could not - slaying the Warboss Godkleavah, ending the campaign as the Orks fell into disarray and infighting with the loss of their leader.

The Crimson Fists and Steel Scions parted on good terms after scouring the forces off the inhabited worlds of the sector, and there was even a reported duel between Champions of the chapter, with the Steel Scions avid duellist history putting them on par with the Sons of the Fist. Even then, it is reported that the Crimson Fist Champion won this duel, though the duel is now repeated many times as a sign of the allegiance between the chapters, with varying results.

Battle of Trekerth Trinius - 998.M41

As time passed, they would soon realise their final duty. In 997.M41 Hive Fleet Leviathan came to bear on the galaxy. In the face of the Tyranids decimating huge portions of the Galaxy, the Steel Scions were finally alerted to their duty... although far too late for preparations as a splinter fleet of Tyranids rapidly approached their homeworld.

Following their previous victory over Godkleavah, they used the same tactics as before, starting the assault as the Hive Fleet reached a nearby feral planet, the Adeptus Astartes of the Steel Scions plummeting planet-side in Drop Pods, attacking in full chapter strength.

What should have been an easy victory, a steamroll from the landing point, purging and slaughtering the foul xenos from the planet went drastically wrong and nearly threatened the entire future of the chapter.

The Xenos favoured swarm tactics - huge numbers of weaker Xenos led to battle by Carnifexes and even stronger beasts of destruction. The Marines of the brave chapter were surrounded, with no way of reinforcing each other. The long engagement was terrible and bloody, the chapter reduced to half strength by the time they finally managed to break free, having a last-ditch stand while the brothers of the 1st Company eventually forced the Chapter Master into a Thunderhawk while a brave rearguard held the line.

After this terrible conflict, the fully-fledged brothers of the Steel Scions plunged their right arms into boiling black paint, reciting the names of every fallen brother in the history since the Chapter's conception. This is also now part of the initiation ritual for new neophytes, for they must too learn the deeds of the fallen brothers of the chapter, in order to better honour their losses and aspire to greater deeds of valour and courage.

Defence of Xiollion Trekerth - 100.M42

Xiollion Trekerth was a Forgeworld planet in the Segmentum Tempestus, an expansion originating from Graia and mimicking their practices, and one the Steel Scions had had regular communication with. It wasn't unheard of for Steel Scion Techmarines to visit to help the Forgeworld, or simply get new information in trades for relic and STC hunting. Though this happened many times throughout their long and continual relationship, the notable finds will be detailed later.

After the Tyranids tore Trekerth Trinius into its pure biomass, the Tyranids used in the assault were melted down into the biomass pools as the Splinter Fleet continued it's advance through the system, homing in onto Xiollion Trekerth, the largest planet in the system, full of over 50 Hive Cities, most of which containing Adeptus Mechanicum factories, and any that didn't were usually resource gathering plants.

Chapter Homeworld

Trekerth Trinius, despite being a very small planet orbiting Trekerth Primus, was the initial staging home planet for the Steel Scions. Prior to the Tyranid invasion, it was primarily a rocky wasteland, with about 300 miles of plants to give oxygen for the entire planet. As a result, there's only one Hive City on the entire planet, right near the heavily guarded and protected forest. The planet was highly dependent on outside resources, and was nearly entirely wiped out by a forest fire.

What this planet did have going for it, however, was ore. Giant mining stations were set up all over the uninhabitable part of the planet, producing so much pollution that those living there had to sometimes resort to Oxygen therapy if too many mining stations were operational for many months at a time.

Where most Space Marine chapters looked for feral tribe people for their strength, these people were valued by the Steel Scions for their hardiness and sheer will and determination, and so they recruited their initial ranks from this population.

However, this was not to last as the Tyranids attacked Trekerth Trinius in force, wiping what little biomass the planet had, leaving it a dead husk of it's former glory, the mining stations broken and in ruins, the Hive City razed to the ground and the first, incomplete Fortress Monastery of the Steel Scions left abandoned and shattered.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Steel Scions were created with pure Iron Hand geneseed. This means that each of the brothers often feels a pull to the machine, and an urge to replace themselves with bionics, in the pursuit of strength, and becoming one with the machines they revere and wield.

The Steel Scions make no attempt to resist this "flaw" of their geneseed, instead encouraging it, so that each battle brother in the ranks of the chapter may know and understand the weapons and vehicles they use and rely on so much. However, the Chapter itself makes one singular rule - even if the right arm of a brother is replaced with a bionic, it must still be painted black to honour the fallen.

Notable Quotes

By the Steel Scions

"The foul Xenos we call Tyranids. They claimed half a Chapter. Half. It was the most terrible and bloodiest conflict I've ever had to witness in the name of the Emperor. But we shall not falter! Their sacrifice will not be forgotten! Come Brothers! With the names of our fallen comrades on out lips, we shall show honour and courage in the face of this Xenos scum! For the Imperium! For the Emperor! For our Brothers!"
—Garrul "Stormwalker" Salathiel, 6th Chapter Master at the Defence of Xiollion Trekerth

About the Steel Scions

"Thanks for helping us take down these Tyranids. We've been so focused on ensuring the Inquisition and their allies don't slaughter our people again, that we forgot the threat of that vile Hive Mind. We heard that the sons of Ferrus Manus are gifted with technology, you mind lending us a hand with repairing a few things in the Albus Domus?"
— Executive Davidius Clarkeson of the Emperor's Liberators.
"As Sons of Ferrus Manus, logic dictates that we are rivals for our ways and philosophies are of the opposite ends of the spectrum. And yet, we cannot help but be interested in them as their human heart still mourns for their fallen in a way that mechanical minds can never comprehend. We may not be allies or friends, but they have our respect"
— Unknown Lightning Wraiths Astartes
