- "We face portents of doom each dawn, and yet we persist. When our long watch over the great rift ends and the imperium is whole again, we will persist. And when the enemy is no more and the galaxy is safe, we will persist. Now and forever, resplendent in the emperor's light, WE WILL PERSIST."
- — Captain Tiberious, 2nd Company, after the opening of the Great Rift.
The Steel Hawks are an Ultramarines Successor Chapter, notable for being one of the few chapters located so close to the galactic core. Founded to defend the realms of Mankind from threats originating in the core, they have endured countless campaigns against them from the forces of Chaos and Orks alike. After taking considerable losses from their first encounter with Tyrannids, the Steel Hawks have eagerly embraced the Primaris process to hasten their recovery to full fighting strength.
The Steel Hawks are mostly Codex Astartes-compliant, with minor cosmetic changes to rank and company indicators. Their wargear is another exception to their adherence to Codex standards, incorporating Votann technology integrated from samples recovered or bartered from the nearby Votann kinships that also inhabit the galactic core. This technology is particularly prevalent in their air vehicles and their Autoch-inspired Bolters. The Techmarines of the Steel Hawks have had to severely emphasize the sanctioned abhuman origins of these technologies in order to keep the support of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Inquisition, but for moment at least the wargear of the Steel Hawks has been allowed to come dangerously close to innovative.
The Steel Hawks are deployed wherever a threat response is required in the core – but the chapter boasts expertise against the forces of chaos and Orks in particular. The chapter has a highly developed air wing and jump pack specialists, alongside a healthy talent for artillery and long-range marksmanship. The Chapter treasures its supply of Mark X Gravis armour suits, which ensure that be it an artillery barrage or an orbital drop, the Steel Hawks always hit their targets.
From their homeworld of Nova Aerie, they patrol the north of the core to intercept hostile forces before they can pose a threat to the worlds under their protection but are most often seen defending the region near the Cicatrix Maledictum where they make their home as they await the chance to rejoin the imperium.
Chapter History[]
The Founding[]
It was by the decree of the High Lords of Terra that the Steel Hawks were prepared for chapter creation. Intended as a response to the increased hostile activity in the galactic core, the Steel Hawks were forged in secret, their base gene-stock taken from the Ultramarines chapter, having been carefully crafted from tithe stock on Mars. So it was that the 11th Founding would mark the Steel Hawks' birth, with a trial by fire awaiting them around every corner of their first three hundred years.
After a successful founding, the Steel Hawks were brought to full strength, with the Chapter collaborating with many others in order to train up and develop the experienced fighting forces it would need to fulfill its duties. Scouts hunted rebels in the depths of hive cities or stalked death world predators, Fire Support troops aided in the blunting of an ork incursion on Iridios V, and the assault troops levelled the rebels of the span. Once finally experienced enough to stand on their own, the Steel Hawks began their vigil. From their fortress-monastery high in the mountains of Nova Aerie, the Aerie Spire, stood guard over the 15 worlds entrusted to their care and awaited signs of chaos. They would not be kept waiting long.
The Razing of Regresso IV[]
Regresso IV was a mineral-rich world in the Steel Hawk's coreward sector. While the Steel Hawks were still assembling their defenses and seconding their forces to other chapters for training a traitorous imperial governor named Silas Krawe began to hatch a rebellion, hoping to seize the system and its astartes-grade military resources before the fledgling chapter could establish itself properly and remove and hope of his independent rule.
Unfortunately for Krawe the fledgling chapter's master, Skykeeper Thorne, had already begun his vigil after a brief seconding to the Ultramarines.

Chapter Gene-Seed[]
Derived from Ultramarines' gene-stock, the gene-seed required little special treatment prior to the chapter's founding to ensure its purity. In the depths of Mars the tithe stock was extracted with only minimal changes being made in order to encourage stability. The result was a gene-stock that closely embodied the best traits of the ultramarines while still allowing for some development of chapter identity. One mutation that did occur was yellow irises, with little else denoting any gene-seed irregularities.
