The Spears of the Phoenix are an Adeptus Astartes chapter created in 991.M35 as part of the "Cursed" 21st Founding of the Adeptus Astartes. While officially in the Imperium of Man's records the Chapter is of an unknown lineage with only the Senatorium Imperialis, Lialu Inquisitoral Conclave, and select members of the Chapter knowing their true genetic make up.
The Spears of the Phoenix were created to guard the Imperium of Man's border at the edge of the Eastern Fringe in Segmentum Ultima, against the warbands of the traitorous XXth "Alpha Legion" Legiones Astartes that fled into the Eastern Fringe during the Great Scouring. A secondary mission of the chapter is to expand the Imperium of Man's borders into the Eastern Fringe and enforce Imperial Compliance on all planets featuring Human life. With a third mission, given directly from the Fabricator-General of Mars, is to gather any equipment, genetic-material, and information related to Corvus Corax's Raptor Project that was stolen from the Raven Guard Legion by the Alpha Legion, during the Battle of Ravendelve on the Tech-Guild Forge World/Raven Guard Legion's Homeworld of Kiavahr during the Horus Heresy.
History[]
M35[]
"Cursed" 21st Founding[]
In late M35 the Senatorium Imperialis passed an edict, approving the creation of the 21st Founding of the Adeptus Astartes and had countless organizations of the Adeptus Terra and the Adeptus Mechanicus mobilized to focused all their resources on creation of the new Adeptus Astartes chapters, becoming one of the largest Foundings in the Age of the Imperium. The Magos Biologis of the Adeptus Mechanicus used the 21st Founding as a testbed for their experiments on improving the 19 specialized organs, known as gene-seed, used in the creation of a Firstborn Astartes.
The Magos Biologis proved to be nowhere near the level of genetic modification that the Emperor of Mankind, the Imperial Palace's Biotechnical Division, the Selenite gene-cults of Luna, Primarch Corvus Corax, or Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl. Many of the 21st Founding's chapters suffer from mutations, like the Black Dragons and Sons of Antaeus, or falling to Chaos, like the Blood Gorgons. Some of the 21st Founding's chapters like the Fire Hawks and Lamenters suffer great catastrophes, with the experiments done to the Lamenters' gene-seed to eliminate the Red Thirst and Black Rage flaws of all who descend from the Primarch of the IXth "Blood Angels" Legiones Astartes, Sanguinius, suffer form, proved to be a failure with members of the chapter succumbing to the Black Rage during The Liberation of Slaughterhouse III in 701.M41, during the Corinth Crusade.
There have been rumors claiming the gene-seed of the Spears of the Phoenix is more pure than that of the Ist "Dark Angels" Legiones Astartes, the Ultramarines, and the Imperial Fists, for it is said that all of their gene-seed organs operate at a level of efficiently beyond all others. Who started these rumors is unknown, but whoever made these claims have only tarnished the Chapter's reputation, for one to think of being more pure than those First Founding chapters, has caused other chapters to shun the Spears of the Phoenix even more than they are shunned for being apart of the 21st "Cursed" Founding. The Chapter believes that their enemies in the Eastern Fringe has spread these rumors to weaken the border of the Imperium of Man.
The Chapter has only two known physical gene-seed defects: The development of violet irises and albinism in those implanted with the Chapter's Gene-Seed. The Chapter has dismissed these rumors of a defect in their gene-seed and claim that many within the Chapter are descended of Cadian blood. This would serve to explain for the violet irises, as most of the Highborn families in Sub-Sector Lialu that the Spears of the Phoenix recruit from are descended from the former Fortress World of Cadia, but there are still rumors that persist that it is in fact a defect that the Chapter has always had from their inception, before they developed their current form of recruitment. There are even some who would dare to suggest that the Chapter may be descended from traitor gene-seed, and the Inquisitors and agents of the Ordo Hereticus, Ordo Malleus, and Ordo Astartes have been known to keep a close eye on the Chapter.
When the Spears of the Phoenix were created, Veteran Sergeant Xiander Naxon of the Death Eagles chapter, was summoned to the Imperial Throneworld/Hive World of Terra by the High Lords of Terra to become the first Chapter Master of the Spears of the Phoenix, with his Veteran Squad becoming the Chapter's first Captains. Rumors exist that this was an experiment conducted by the Fabricator-General of Mars to test how an experimental Adeptus Astartes chapter of unknown lineage would develop under a Veteran Astartes from a suspected successor chapter of the Raven Guard. Others have stated that the choice of Chapter Master had a much darker truth, for their exist dark rumors that the history behind the true Founding and true Primarch of the Death Eagles have been purposely concealed from Imperial records.
Chapter Master Xiander Naxon, alongside his Captains personally trained the first one thousand Neophytes of Chapter, hand selected from the most genetically pure children of the Highborn families on Terra to become the first Battle-Brothers of the Spears of the Phoenix. Those destined to become the first Frater Astrotechnicus of the Spears of the Phoenix where chosen by Chapter Master Xiander Naxon from the the most genetically pure children that could be found on the Forge World of Mars. Once the one thousand Terran recruits completed their training, the twelve Martian recruits finished their training under the Tech-Priest of Mars, and the fifteen most genetically pure Psykers of the Scholastica Psykana are chosen to become the Chapter's first Librarians finished their training, was the Chapter ready to be given their purpose.
On 991.M35 the 21st Founding of the Adeptus Astartes was declared, with the Spears of the Phoenix being one of the newly formed chapters. Chapter Master Xiander Naxon was told of his Chapter's purpose, given the Chapter's first mission and was handed the Chapter's copy of the Codex Astartes. The Spears of the Phoenix were ordered to travel to their Fortress-Monastery, the Bastion of Resurrection, on their new homeworld of Asfixia, located in the Nuada Star System, of Sub-Sector Lialu, of Segmentum Ultima, where they were to force Imperial Compliance on the worlds in Sub-Sector Lialu that were currently embroiled in the Moirae Schism of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Once Imperial authority was restored, the Spears of the Phoenix would fortify Sub-Sector Lialu, for the primary purpose behind their creation is to form a bulwark along the Imperium of Man's border with the area of Wilderness Space known as the Eastern Fringe, to defend against recent incursions by forces of the Alpha Legion.
The secondary purpose given to the Chapter by the High Lords of Terra is to expand the Imperium of Man's borders into the Eastern Fringe, and enforce Imperial Compliance on any planet containing a Human population. The third purpose of the Chapter was given directly to the chapter by the Fabricator-General of Mars, Gastaph Hediatrix, and was to collect any and all equipment, genetic material, and information that involves the Primarch Corvus Corax's Raptor Project, that was taken by Alpha Legion Infiltrators during the Battle of Ravendelve on the Tech-Guild Forge World/Raven Guard Space Marine Legion Homeworld of Kiavahr during the Horus Hersey.

The Spears of the Phoenix mobilized the whole chapter, in defense of Sub-Sector Lialu. Chaos uprisings caused by the Alpha Legion, uprisings by the Rebel Lords of the Underhives, and gang warfare in the Underhives erupted all across Sub-Sector Lialu. In the chaos caused by all the uprisings Human Pirates, Anhrathe, and Ork Freebooterz saw an opportunity and begun raiding all across the weakened Sub-Sector. Excited by the sounds of battle Wildboyz massed out of the wilderness and wastes to join in the battles, and fearing the loss of everything they worked hard for Genestealer Cult uprisings erupted all across Sub-Sector Lialu.

Indomitus Crusade[]
A Torchbearer task force of the Indomitus Crusade was sent by the Lord Commander of the Imperium, Imperial Regent, and resurrected Primarch of the Ultramarines, Roboute Guilliman, to provide the Spears of the Phoenix chapter with the "Primarch's Gift." The Custodian of the Emissaries Imperatus Shield Host of the Adeptus Custodes in charge of the task force arrived to find the whole of Sub-Sector Lialu under siege by the forces of the Alpha Legion.

Lord Commander/Master of the Chapter Wargear
The Chapter Master of the Spears of the Phoenix who holds the title of Master of the Chapter and the rank of Lord Commander is donned in the most sacred of the Chapter's relics. All of the wargear Lord Commander's wargear was made by Lord Commander [Redacted] in M36, and has only been changed once during the Indomitus Era to modifiy the Feathers of the Phoenix to fit the physique of the Primaris Astartes, and to incorporate the Omni-Scrambler installed on the Mark X Phobos Power Armour into the Feathers of the Phoenix's backpack power unit, and the Wings of the Phoenix modified to create space for the Omni-Scrambler antennas. The Resolve of the Phoenix alongside the rest of the chapter's Tactical Dreadnought Armour is still undergoing modifications to be used by Primaris Astartes. The Lord Commander does not wield a Power Spear or Storm Shield into battle, for he is the phoenix and the warriors of his chapter are his spears and shields.

Recruitment, Training, and Progression of the Ranks[]
Once a year all males ages ten to twelve years old in the Pistis Schola Progenium are brought to Asfixia to conduct the Aspirant Trials. Dropped on the top of the mountains surrounding the Great Scorpion Desert, the aspiring Aspirants must descend the mountain, and travel across the vast desert plains to the Tempestus Gate. Equipped with a Lasgun, bayonet, 4 charge packs, Flak Armour, 1 Frag Grenade, 1 Krak Grenade, and enough rations of Corpse Starch to last a week. Being trailed by Skull Probes, Scout Marines and Vanguard Marines, the aspiring Aspirants must maintain a noble bearing through out the trial or they will fail. Not all survive the trials for the Asfixia Scorpions are dangerous beast who can easily tear through an Astartes in Power Armour and the hidden Scout Marines and Vanguard Marines can't always save the young child. Those who fail to arrive at the Tempestus Gate in a week, have been saved by the Spears of the Phoenix, or are the brink of death are retrieved by the Pistis Schola Progenium and brutally beaten by their Drill Abbots for weeks for their failure. The Chapter recognizes that to let these aspiring aspirants die is harmful for the Imperium of Man, for while they may not be strong enough for the Adeptus Astartes, some will become Planetary Governors, Militarum Lialu Officers, Commissars, Tempestus Scions, and some even becoming Inquisitors. The Spears of the Phoenix view the deaths caused by other Chapter's initiation processes as unnecessary and wasteful of not only Human potential but the manpower that keeps the Imperium of Man running.
The few that arrive within a week and maintained their noble bearing, begin the next phase of the Aspirant Trails. Wielding only their bayonet, an aspiring Aspirant must engaged an unarmed and unarmoured Astartes in close quarters combat. The aspiring Aspirant is not expected to ever win, instead this trail is to test his determination. The aspiring Aspirant will die multiple times in his battle against the Astartes, being resurrected each time by the nearby Apothecary. If his nobility does not waiver, nor does his determination to defeat the Astartes, than the aspiring Aspirant continues to the next stages of the trials.
An Apothecary will conduct a complete and thorough exanimation of the aspiring Aspirant. The Aspirant must pure of any mutations, the only exceptions being Psykers, Pariahs, and violet irises. Next a Chaplain will test his faith of the God-Emperor of Mankind, only those who have a deep belief in the Victorian Cult may become a member of the Spears of the Phoenix. Finally the aspiring Aspirant will be examined by a Librarian for any taint of Chaos. If the aspiring Aspirant fails any of these examinations than he is sent back to the Pistis Schola Progenium, unless the taint of Chaos is discovered than he will be executed immediately. If he passes all of the trails and examinations he is given a new name and is "reborn" as an Aspirant of the Chapter.
In rare cases that an aspiring Aspirant completes all the trails but the Chapter is currently in no need of any more Aspirants than he is awarded a medal and is sent back to the Pistis Schola Progenium and will conduct the Aspirant Trails again the next year. If the aspiring Aspirant passes all trails three times, is twelve years old and the Chapter is at max strength, than the aspiring Aspirant will be awarded a medal and subjected to genetic modifications to make him into what the Chapter calls a Pseudo-Astartes. These Pseudo-Astartes are created using methods similar to those used in the transformation of Luther of the Ist "Dark Angels" Space Marine Legion, First Captain Kor Phaeron of the XVIIth "Word Bearers" Space Marine Legion [1], and Inquisitor Lord Hector Rex of the Ordo Malleus, and will be sent back to the Pistis Schola Progenium to continue their education. After graduating these Pseudo-Astartes are considered for induction into the Phoenician Guard and are allowed to participate in certain training exercises alongside the Astartes. These Pseudo-Astartes will play the role of other Chapters during the Chapter's strategio-simulacra and will also play the role of enemy Astartes.
After passing all the trails an Aspirant will receive the first 3 phases of the Gene-Seed implants and be sent to the Master of Recruits to began their training as a member of the Spears of the Phoenix. They will learn what it means to be a Marine of the Spears of the Phoenix, learning the Chapter's history, culture, and beliefs. During they're time as an Aspirant they are expected to memorize the Codex Astartes, the Principia Bellicosa, the Chaplain Edict, the Edicts of Nikaea, Treaty of Olympus Mons and the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer. The Aspirants are trained in the ways of combat conducted by the Astra Militarum and the Tempestus Scions. Aspirants start their training at the level of an Astra Militarum Whiteshield, then are taught how to function in an Infantry Squad, Heavy Weapons Squad, Special Weapons Squad, Rough Rider Cavalry Squadron, Armoured Fists Squad, Grenadiers, and Storm Troopers, being able to put any Astra Militarum Veteran to shame.

This training also allows the Aspirants to function as Planetary Defence Force, Astra Militarum, Ordo Tempestus, and Aeronautica Imperialis allied forces during the Chapter's strategio-simulacra and as enemy Genestealer Cultist, Insurrectionist, and Traitor Guardsmen.
Between all this military training the Aspirants are also educated in The Mysteries and The Warnings of Cult Mechanicus' Quest of Knowledge, the Deus Mechanicus, the Omnissah, the Motive Force, and Machine Spirits. He will be sent to the 11th Company (Scout) where he will be trained in the ways of the Scout Marine. He will learn of the Geokinesis, Biomancy, Telekinetics, Obscuration, Soul Ward, and Divination Psychic disciplines. When the now Scholar Empyrean returns to the Chapter and is judged worthy to become a true member of the Chapter and is sent out into the Great Scorpion Desert naked and wielding only a Force Spear. The soon to be Marine must slay an Asfixian Scorpion and drag it's corpse back to the Tempestus Gate. When he returns he must consume the venom from the venom sacs located in the creature's vesicles before receiving a blessing from a High Chaplain and is locked in a casket and buried in the desert. After the effects of the venom wears off and the hallucinations end, the Astartes must break his way out of the casket and dig his way to the surface. Once he reaches the surface and is "reborn" he must navigate his way back to the Tempestus Gate and be initiated as a Lexicanium of the Chapter and an Apothecary will cut the necessary points in the Black Carapace Gene-Seed implant and install the necessary implants to allow the new born Astartes to cybernetically connect with Power Armor as well as install his Psi-Booster Bionic. After this surgery is preformed the Astartes is trained in the use of Mark II, Mark III, Mark IV, Mark V, Mark VI, Mark VII, Mark VIII, and Mark X suits Power Armor.
Neophyte Pariahs who fail to uphold the Chapter's standards will have their Progenoid Glands harvested at 28 Terrran years old, are mind cleansed, and sent to the Culexus Temple of the Officio Assassinorum.
Failure[]
If a Neophyte fails to uphold the Chapter's standards, beliefs, culture, or way of life, they will continue serving as an Aspirant until their Gene-Seed implants are complete. Once their implantations are complete the failed Neophyte will be locked away in the Chatper's Apothocarium for 10 Terran years so that the Chapter may regain the genetic bounty given to the failed Neophyte. After his Progenoid Glands are extracted, the Neophyte will have his mind cleansed of all of knowledge he has of the Chapter's culture and beliefs and become one of the Chapter's Serfs. If a Neophyte suffers a severe injury that is impossible to recover from then he will be transformed into a mindless servitor to continue serving the Cohort. If any taint of Chaos is found in a Neophyte, than he shall be immediately executed by his Scout Sergeant.

Combat Doctrine[]
Camouflage[]
The Spears of the Phoenix make heavy use of camouflage and Cameleoline. Before deploying into battle all suits of power armour, Centurion Warsuits, Tactical Dreadnought Armour, Infiltrator Armour, and all ground vehicles are painted in camouflage patterns, that are approved by the Codex Astartes, thar best suits the environment. All ground vehicles carry a Cameleoline tarp large enough to cover the vehicle, to conceal the vehicle when not in use or as preparation for an ambush and have camouflage netting coated with Cameleoline is attached the vehicles to add further concealment.
All power armour, Infiltrator Armour, Centurion Warsuits, Tactical Dreadnought Armour, Invictor Tactical Warsuits, and Dreadnoughts are painted in camouflages patterns that are approved by the Codex Astartes and that best suits the environment, and are then coated with the Cameleoline chemicals, this way if the Cameleoline coating is damaged, there is a layer of camouflage under it. All Astartes and Neophytes of the chapter wear Cameleoline cloaks that are capable of covering their entire body into battle, with the Neophytes also wearing combat fatigues made of Cameleoline fabric under their Infiltrator Armour, and the Astartes attaching pieces of Cameleoline fabric over their power armour's black joints.
The top of chapter's aircraft, Land Speeders, and Storm Speeders are painted in a Codex Astartes approved pattern of camouflage that match the ground of the planet, while the bottom of the chapter's aircraft, Land Speeders, and Storm Speeders are painted in a Codex Astartes approved pattern of camouflage that matches the sky of the planet, and a coating of Cameleoline chemicals is applied all over the exterior of the aircrafts, Land Speeders, and Storm Speeders.
The Spears of the Phoenix's heavy use of Cameleoline and camouflage has caused them to be viewed as cowards by the more honourable chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. The chapter cares not for these claims, as the use of camouflage allows the chapter to perfectly position it's forces deep in enemy territory and to completely destroy the enemy with the element of surprise and minimum casualties.
Intelligence Gathering[]
The Spears of the Phoenix make heavy use of the scouting abilities of the chapter's Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes. Whenever possible the chapter will send Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes to map out enemy territory, discover enemy positions, weapon caches, supply lines, and to identify enemy commanders. Once the Field Commander believes that enough intelligence has been gathered, the chapter will conduct it's assault upon the enemy forces while the Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes assassinate enemy commanders, raid supply lines, destroy weapon caches, and place beacons to mark locations for Drop Pods and Teleport Homers for the chapter's Terminators and Assault Terminators.
All Astartes and Neophytes of the Spears of the Phoenix have monoscopes attached to their armour to allow the chapter to record the battle and to allow the Field Commander a full view of the battlefield. All Astartes and Neophytes are expected to record their deeds, the deeds of others, and every thing they witness on the battlefield in a journal. At the end of every mission, the Chapter's Librarians will collect all of the journals and recordings from the monoscopes to compile to most accurate account of the battle. These are studied by the Chapter's Lord Commander, Lieutenant Commanders, Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Corporals to form new strategies and to make sure mistakes are never repeated.
The Spears of the Phoenix's heavy use of intelligence gathering before deployments has caused them to be viewed as cowards by the more honourable chapters of the Adeptus Astartes. This is of little concern for the Spears of the Phoenix, because unlike those chapters, the Spears of the Phoenix are less likely to be surprised by the enemy, and suffer less casualties.
Drop Assaults[]
After the Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes have located the enemy's headquarters, the Spears of the Phoenix prefer to conduct a Drop Assault directly onto the enemy headquarters while the Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes cause chaos throughout the hostile territory. The Field Commander will order the chapter's Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes to assassinate enemy commanders, raid enemy supply lines, ambush enemy patrols, destroy enemy weapons caches and conduct all manner of guerilla warfare moments before the chapter conducts a Drop Assault. As chaos spreads across the enemy territory, Deathstorm Drop Pods, and Deathwind Drop Pods land inside the enemy headquarters and other complexes, mowing down the enemy forces who were mobilizing to assist all their forces under attack by the chapter's Neophytes and Vanguard Astartes. As soon as the Deathstorm Drop Pods, and Deathwind Drop Pods run out of ammunition, Reiver's who where deployed into position by Grav-Chutes the night before storm the enemy headquarters complex while Single-Man Drop Pods and Dreadnought Drop Pods land all across the enemy headquarters and Terminators squads teleport in. Single-Man Drop Pods carrying Incursors deploy right on top of the enemy's headquarters building with the Incursors quickly storming the building and eliminating the enemy headquarters.
After securing the enemy headquarters, Thunderfire Cannons are deployed by Thunderfire Drop Pods, Supply Drop Pods resupply all forces on the ground, Firestrike Servo-Turrets and Hammerfall Bunkers are deployed to reinforce the area, and the chapter has it's heavier assets deployed by aircraft to prepare defenses against an enemy counter attack. All Neophytes, Vanguard Astartes, and Reivers go back into hiding after resupplying from Supply Drop Pods to gather intelligence on the enemy counter attack and to prepare to flank the counter attack.
Siege Tactics[]
When the Spears of the Phoenix come across a hostile fortification that cannot be easily infiltrated or a Drop Assault would be ineffective, then they will besiege the enemy. Sniping Neophytes and Vanguard Eliminators will be position around the enemy fortifications, eliminating any visible hostiles and scanning the fortifications for weaknesses. While Vanguard Suppressors will position themselves near the entrances to quickly eliminate any hostile ground vehicles that attempt to leave the fortifications. Whirlwind Hunters, Whirlwind Stalkers, and Whirlwind Hyperios will be position around the hostile fortifications to prevent any enemy aircraft from entering or leaving the fortifications, alongside patrolling Stormhawk Interceptors and Stormtalon Gunships. Once the Sniping Neophytes and Vanguard Eliminators have located any weakness among the enemy fortifications, then an artillery bombardment will begin on these areas by Whirlwind Helios and Land Raider Helios to weaken the area more.
While the bombardment is being conducted the Sniping Neophytes and Vanguard Eliminators will suppress the defensive positions around and in the bombardment area while Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors approach the fortifications under the cover of the bombardment. Once the Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors get close enough to the fortifications they will conceal themselves. After the Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors have been concealed, the artillery bombardment will halt and a Stormhawk Interceptor with a Pict-recorder attached under its hull will fly over the fortifications to get an aerial view of any new weaknesses. Skull Probes are sent into any openings created by the bombardment that are large enough for them to fit through to gather intelligence on the inside of the fortifications. Once the Field Commander believes enough intelligence has been gathered and all forces are in place, he will begin the assault.
One Centurion Siegebreaker Cohort containing Assault Centurions and an Ironclad Dreadnought will assault the weakest section of the enemy fortifications, while two Centurion Siegebreaker Cohorts containg Assault Centurions and a Siege Dreadnought each, will assault the second and third weakest section of the enemy fortifications. Terminators, Assault Terminators, Aggressors, Eradicators, and any Assault Centurions not assigned to a Centurion Siegebreaker Cohort will attack the closest entrance, alongside Vindicators and Land Raider Ares, to prevent a counter attack and to spread the enemy's forces. While the assault forces are advancing, Sniping Neophytes, Tactical Neophytes, Tactical Astartes, Sternguard Veterans, Devastator Astartes, Devastator Centurions, Intercessors, Heavy Intercessors, Hellblasters, and Dreadnoughts provide suppressing fire against any enemy weapon emplacements that could fire upon the assault forces.
Once the Field Commander deems that a Centurion Siegebreaker Cohort or the assault force on the entrance has gotten close enough to the enemy formations he will single the next phase of attack. Stormraven gunships, Thunderhawk gunships, and Overlords quickly pass over the areas being assaulted and deploy Vanguard Veterans with jump packs, Assault Astartes with jump packs, and Reivers with Grav-Chutes. These Astartes will land on the roofs of the enemy's structures where it was weakened by the earlier artillery bombardment and use Melta Bombs to blow holes through the roof. Once the hole is made, the Astartes will quickly clear the room of hostiles, plant a Teleport Homer, then will start to clear the building. Once the Teleport Homer is placed, any of the chapter's Assault Terminators not apart of the assault on the entrance will teleport in to provide aid in clearing the structure. Overlords at the edge of the planets atmosphere will also deploy Inceptors who will land through the holes to provide their aid as well.
As soon as the Ironclad Dreadnought, a Siege Dreadnought or any of the Assault Centurions siege drills touches an enemy structure, the Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors that are closest will break concealment and blow Astartes sized holes through the walls with Melta Bombs and enter the enemy structure. Once a breach with a siege drill has been made, Assault Neophytes, Assault Intercessors, alongside any Assault Astartes, Vanguard Veterans, and Reivers not apart of the aerial assault, with any Incursors who were not staged earlier will charge into the openings created by the siege drills, Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors. Any of the Assault Astartes and Vanguard Veterans with jump packs will jump onto the roof and enter through the opens to reinforce the aerial assault force.
Once the close support teams have made it into the enemy fortifications, the rest of the chapter's forces providing suppressing fire will charge into the openings to provide heavier firepower inside. The Ironclad Dreadnought, the Siege Dreadnoughts, the Assault Centurions, Devastator Centurions alongside any other Dreadnoughts will move to support the assault on the entrance if they have not breached it yet. All Sniping Neophytes and Vanguard Eliminators will pull back to guard all of the chapter's ground vehicles.
The attacks from three Centurion Siegebreaker Cohorts, the attack on an entrance, the aerial assault, and the concealed Vanguard Infiltrators and Incursors is to constantly keep the enemy's forces confused as where the attack is coming from and keep them disorganized. This way, by the time the main assault force storms the fortifications, the enemy as no time to set up proper defenses.
If a Field Commander needs an enemy fortress taken as quickly as possible, he may make a request to the Master of the Forge to have the Chapter's Fellblade Super-Heavy Main Battle Tank and/or the Chapter's Astraeus Super-Heavy Tank join the assault upon the entrance.
Gene-Seed and Bionics[]
The Spears of the Phoenix were created in 991.M35 as part of the "Cursed" Founding, when the Magos Biologis of the Adeptus Mechanicus experimented and attempted to improve the gene-seed of the Adeptus Astartes. The Magos Biologis mostly failed in their experiments with many of the Adeptus Astartes chapters suffering from mutations or being seduced by Chaos. When the Spears of the Phoenix were founded, the knowledge of which Primarch they are descended from was kept from the Chapter.
The true precise genetic makeup of the Spears of the Phoenix is only known by the Lord Commander, the Chief Apothecary, the High Chaplain, the Chief Librarian, the Senatorum Imperialis, the Magos Biologis of the Holy Forge World of Mars, and the Lialu Inquisitorial Conclave of the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition. Offical Imperium of Man record has the chapter listed as having an unknown lineage.
Deficiencies[]
Due to knowledge learned from a IIIrd "Emperor's Children" Legione Astartes Voidship from the Great Crusade found buried in the Space Hulk [Redacted], the Spears of the Phoenix have been able to maintain the purity of their gene-seed without it degrading over the millenniums. Though there are some notable psychological and physiological side effects of the gene-seed.
Primarchs' Curse: Pride in Perfection[]
The Chapter's gene-seed does cause an Astartes to have psychological tendencies towards personal achievement, individual superiority, and competition, but balanced by also having a thorough, attentive, and analytical mindset.
- Stage 1 - Correction: The Battle-Brother constantly studies every aspect of the battle where his failure occurred. He seeks to find the reasons of his failure and how it could have been prevented. The Battle-Brother works on his short comings until he believes that his failure will never occur again upon the battlefield. Majority of Battle-Brothers do not progress past this stage, as most correct their mistakes and regain their pride.
- Stage 2 - Perfection: The Battle-Brother begins to preform combat training drills excessively and attempts to master all of the weapons in the Chapter's armoury. The Battle-Brother believes that his failure happened because he wasn't the perfect warrior. He seeks to master warfare, to become an unstoppable force upon the battlefield. Most Battle-Brothers who reach this stage do not progress past this stage, and some are cured when they finally believe that they have mastered all aspects of warfare. Most Battle-Brothers who believe they have achieved perfection go to become officers of the Chapter.
- Stage 3 - Redemption: Unable to cope with his failures and imperfection, the Battle-Brother seeks redemption by the spilling of their blood and their enemies'. The Battle-Brother will have complete disregard for tactical doctrines and self-preservation, preferring to conduct suicidal attacks on the battlefield. The Battle-Brother seeks to cause as much destruction and death upon the foe as possible before falling upon the battlefield. If a Battle-Brother has succumbed to this state of mind and survives the battle, he will be assigned to Devastator Squad or if he is a Veteran, the Destroyer Squad where he will potentially cause enough destruction and devastation upon the Chapter's foes to achieve redemption in his mind.
- Stage 4 - Devastation: If a Battle-Brother fails to find redemption his mind could break and he will be permanently struck with rage over his imperfections. He will stop at nothing to bring death to his enemies and will continuously push his body pass the limits of an Astartes while on the battlefield. The Battle-Brother will begin to develop tendencies towards self-harm and a strong desire to not be seen by others when away from the battlefield. Some extreme causes develop a form of schizophrenia and believe that they can hear the dead laughing at their imperfections and failures. All who reach this point are clad in black Mark V Hersey Pattern Power Armour with no markings or identifications except the symbol of the Moritat adorning the right shoulder pad and equipped with the dual plasma pistols and jump packs of the ancient Moritats of the Legiones Astartes. The Battle-Brother will then be exiled from the Chapter and sent on a Warrior's Pilgrimage to the closest warzone.
Maintaining Gene-Seed Purity[]
The Spears of the Phoenix place a heavy emphasis on personal perfection and genetic purity. The Chapter will only accept the purest of humans to join it's ranks with only three mutations being allowed, the violet eyes of Cadians, the Psyker gene, and the Pariah gene. The Chapter has faced extinction many times and refuses to lessen the regulations on gene-seed, for to do so would only weaken the Chapter.
Gene-Seed Regulations:[]
- The body of a fallen Astartes most be recovered no matter the cost. If the body cannot be recovered, then the sacred Progenoid Glands will be extracted from the fallen Astartes and the body destroyed. Only if neither the body nor the sacred Progenoid Glands of the Astartes can be recovered, will their body be completely destroyed so as to prevent the enemy from acquiring the Chapter's sacred gene-seed. Neophytes or Astartes who have not had their sacred Progenoid Glands harvested will destroy oneself with explosives or a plasma weapon only as a last resort, if they are the last standing member of their unit and have no chance of survival.
- All Astartes of the Spears of the Phoenix will have their sacred Progenoid Gland located in their neck harvested when mature after five Terran years, and their sacred Progenoid Gland located in their chest will be harvested when mature after ten Terran years. This is to prevent the sacred Progenoid Glands from becoming sterile through exposure to radiation and to lessen the chance of losing the sacred Progenoid Glands upon the battlefield. The only expectation to this regulation are those destined to become Apothecaries of Rebirth.
- Only the purest Homo sapiens will receive the sacred gene-seed of the Chapter. The only exceptions to this regulation are Homo Sapiens who have the Psyker gene, the Pariah gene, and the mutation that causes violet eyes in Homo sapiens from Cadia.
- Any Astartes or Neophyte from the Spears of the Phoenix who has suffered from a mutation must undergo thorough investigation into the cause of the mutation by the Chapter's Apothecaries and Librarians, as well as any Astartes or Neophytes created from their sacred gene-seed. Once the cause has been identified, the sacred gene-seed of that Astartes and all descended from that Astartes will be isolated from the rest of the Chapter's sacred gene-seed stock until a solution to rectify the mutation has been found. All Astartes who suffer from a minor mutation will be forced to take a Death Oath, being equipped with Mark V Heresy Power Armour stripped of all markings and colour, alongside a Hersey Pattern Bolter, before being exiled from the Chapter and becoming a Blackshield. All Astartes who suffer from major mutations alongside any Neophytes who suffer from any kind of mutation will be delivered the Emperor's Peace.
- Only Apothecaries, Librarians, Frater Astrotechnicus, Chaplains, Apothecaries of Rebirth and the Master of the Chapter of the Spears of the Phoenix will be allowed to enter a gene-seed vault. Only exception to this regulation are Apothecaries from Loyalist Adeptus Astartes chapters that are collecting their chapter's gene-seed, members of the Ordo Astartes and Ordo Hereticus collecting Renegade Astartes gene-seed, and members of the Ordo Malleus collecting Heretic Astartes gene-seed. Helix Adepts will only be allowed in a gene-seed vault when under the supervision of an Apothecary.
- The sacred Progenoid Glands from all Librarians will undergo thorough investigation once harvested, and will be isolated from all sacred gene-seed not harvested from Librarians, so as to not contaminate the Chapter's sacred gene-stock. The sacred gene-seed created from a Librarian's sacred Progenoid Glands will only be implanted in Acolytums and never any other Neophytes of the Chapter to maintain genetic purity.
- The sacred Progenoid Glands from all Astartes who posses the Pariah Gene will undergo thorough investigation once harvested, and be isolated from all sacred gene-seed not harvested from Pariahs, as to not contaminate the Chapter's gene-stock. The sacred gene-seed created from a Pariah's sacred Progenoid Glands will only be implanted in Neophytes that posses the Pariah Gene.
- The bodies of all Loyalist, Renegade, and Heretic Astartes will be collected off the battlefield for study. If the bodies of the fallen Astartes cannot be retrieved then their sacred Progenoid Glands will be retrieved. If the bodies or sacred Progenoid Glands of Loyalist Astartes cannot be retrieved than their chapter will be notified of the bodies location, unless Drukhari, Genestealer Cultist, Tyranids, or Heretic Astartes are located in the area, then the body will be destroyed to prevent it's sacred gene-seed from being used by the enemy. If the bodies of Renegade Astartes or Heretic Astartes cannot be retrieved than it's sacred Prognoid Glands will be harvested and the body destroyed. If neither the bodies nor the sacred Progenoid Glands of Renegade Astartes or Heretic Astartes can be retrieved, than the body will be destroyed to prevent it's use by the enemy.
- All bodies and sacred Progenoid Glands recovered from all Loyalist Astartes will be studied by the Chapter's Apothecaries and Librarians before being returned to it's parent chapter. All bodies and sacred Progenoid Glands from Renegade Astartes will be studied by the Chapter's Apothecaries and Librarians before being sent to the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition's Ordo Astartes or Ordo Hereticus. All bodies and sacred Progenoid Glands from Heretic Astartes will be studied by an Apothecary from the [Redacted] chapter of the Adeptus Astartes before being studied by Spears of the Phoenix's Apothecaries and Librarians. Once the bodies and sacred Progenoid Glands from Heretic Astartes have been studied, they will be sent to the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition's Ordo Malleus.
- All Astartes infected by a Corporaptor hominis' Deoxyribonucleic Acid will be equipped with a psychic hood and secured in the Fortress-Monastery's Penitorium while they undergo a thorough investigation by the Chapter's Apothecaries and Librarians. If the Astartes' sacred Prognoid Glands have not yet been harvested, than they will be harvested and studied. Once the investigation is over, the Astartes' fate is decided, if the Astartes is found to be able to resist the psychic gestalt known as the "Broodmind", then he will take a Death Oath, being equipped with Mark V Heresy Power Armour with a psychic hood and stripped of all markings and colour, alongside a Hersey Pattern Bolter, before being exiled from the Chapter and becoming a Blackshield. If the Astartes cannot resist the psychic gestalt known as the "Broodmind" than he will be delievered the Emperor's Peace and his body will be studied. Any Neophytes who are infected by a Corporaptor hominis' Deoxyribonucleic Acid will be equipped with a psychic hood and under go a thorough investigation, before being delivered the Emperor's Peace and his body will be studied. All bodies of and all sacred Progenoid Glands harvested from Loyalist Astartes and Renegade Astartes that have been infected by Corporaptor hominis Deoxyribonucleic Acid will be studied by the Chapter's Apothecaries before being handed over to the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition's Ordo Xenos. All bodies of and all sacred Progenoid Glands harvested from Heretic Astartes that have been infected with Corporaptor hominis' Deoxyribonucleic Acid will be studied by the Chapter's Apothecaries and Librarians before being handed over to the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition's Ordo Malleus.
Gene-Seed Vaults[]
The Chapter maintains sacred gene-seed vaults all across Sub-Sector Lialu with the largest gene-seed vault being located inside the Chapter's fortress-monastery. The gene-seed vault in the Chapter's fortress-monastery always contains at least enough gene-seed to create one thousand Astartes. On every single planet in Sub-Sector Lialu is a Spears of the Phoenix Fortress of Redemption, with a gene-seed vault located beneath each fortress containing enough gene-seed to create a full squad of ten Astartes. Each escort warship of the Chapter's fleet contains a gene-seed vault that always contains at least enough gene-seed to create twenty Astartes.
Each of the Chapter's strike cruisers contain a gene-seed vault that always contains at least enough gene-seed to create two hundred Astartes, besides each Vanguard-class Light Cruiser which contains a gene-seed vault at always has at least enough gene-seed to create one hundred Astares. Both of the Chapter's Battle Barges contain gene-seed vaults that always have at least enough gene-seed to create three hundred Astartes each. Only in the direst of circumstances will any of the gene-seed vaults go below the preferred minimum amount. Each gene-seed vault also contains an Apothecary of Rebirth being held in a stasis field. The purpose of these gene-seed vaults and the Apothecaries of Rebirth held within is so that if the Chapter was ever destroyed, the Apothecaries of Rebirth held inside would be awakened so that the Chapter could be rebuilt, like a phoenix rising from it's ashes.
All gene-seed vaults of the Spears of the Phoenix contain multiple sections, the first and main section houses gene-seed from the Astartes of the Chapter that are not psykers or pariahs and the stasis pod of the Apothecary of Rebirth. The second section houses the gene-seed from the Librarians of the Chapter only, while the third section houses the gene-seed from the Chapter's pariahs only. The fifth section contains gene-seed collected from Loyalist Adeptus Astartes chapters until it can be returned to it's rightful chapter. The sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth sections are located behind large vault doors thrice-blessed by the Chapter's Chaplains and Techmarines. The sixth section contains the gene-seed collected from Astartes of the Chapter who have suffered mutations, the seventh contains the gene-seed collected from Astartes of the chapter who have been infected with Genestealer DNA, the eight contains gene-seed collected from Astartes of the Chapter who have fallen to Chaos, the ninth section contains gene-seed from Renegade Astartes, and the tenth contains gene-seed from Heretic Astartes. The sixth through tenth sections are emptied as soon as all the gene-seed can be sent to the fortress-monastery for study.
During the creation and assembly of a gene-seed vault, every tool and equipment used in it's creation is thrice-blessed in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind by a Chaplain, and thrice-blessed in the name of the Omnissiah by a Techmarine. All the materials used in its construction are thrice-blessed in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind by a Chaplain. Every component of every piece of equipment installed inside of the gene-seed vault is thrice-blessed by a Chaplain in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind and thrice-blessed by a Techmarine in the name of the Omnissiah.
Once all of the equipment is assembled it is thrice-blessed again in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind and in the name of the Omnissiah. Once the equipment is installed it is thrice-blessed again in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind and in the name of the Omnissiah. Once the construction is complete, the Master of the Forge will forge the Artificer Power Armour that incorporates a Master-Crafted bolter and a psychic hood, the Diagnoster Helmet, the Narthecium, the Master-Crafted Burning Astartes Combat Knife, the Master-Crafted Burning Power Spear, Storm Shield, Frag Grenades, and Krak Grenades, and every single Dragonfire Bolt round for the Apothecary of Rebirth that will be interred in the stasis pod. And all the materials, all the components, and all the equipment used in the making of this wargear will be thrice-blessed in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind and the Omnissiah.
Once all of the wargear is complete the Apothecary of Rebirth will have all of his wargear thrice-blessed again before and after it is equipped on him. Before donning his Diagnoster Helmet the Apothecary of Rebirth will eat a final meal cooked by the Master of the Refectorium, will each ingredient and utensil used being blessed by the Master of Sanctity and consecrated salt and water used. Before eating the meal the Apothecary of Rebirth makes a prayer to the God-Emperor of Mankind thanking him for this meal and the sacred task assigned to him. After eating the meal and donning his Diagnoster Helmet the Apothecary of Rebirth will make a final prayer to the God-Emperor of Mankind before entering his stasis pod. After the Apothecary of Rebirth is secured in the stasis pod, it is thrice-blessed again in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind and the Omnissiah, and the grounds of the gene-seed vault are consecrated in the name of the God-Emperor of Mankind. All of these steps are taken by the Chapter to insure the safety of their future, because the gene-seed is the Chapter's life blood and will be protected at all cost.
Deep under the fortress-monastery lies a gene-seed vault that only the Master of the Chapter, Master of the Apothecarion, the Master of the Librarius, the Master of Sanctity, and the Master of the Forge can access. This gene-seed vault contains the bodies and gene-seed from all of the Chapter's Astartes that have suffered major mutations and all of the Chapter's Neophytes that have suffered mutations or joined Chaos. The bodies of these Astartes are thoroughly studied and recorded before having all of their gene-seed organs removed before being destroyed. The harvested Progenoid Glands of mutated Astartes are blessed by the Master of Sanctity before being secured into a stasis vault until a solution to the mutations can be found.
All Progenoid Glands from Astartes infected with Genestealer DNA are also secured a stasis vault here, until all traces of Genestealer DNA can be removed from it. All the gene-seed organs from mutated Astartes and Neophytes are removed to be used in experiments to discover a cure for their mutations, while all the gene-seed organs from Astartes and Neophytes infected with Genestealer DNA are removed and experimented on to discover a way to remove the Genestealer DNA. All the gene-seed from Astartes and Neophytes corrupted by Chaos is experimented on by the Master of Sanctity and the Master of the Librarius to find away to reverse the effects of the Immaterium. The Progenoid Glands of Astartes who have fallen to Chaos are blessed by the Master of Sanctity before being secured in a stasis vault.
Augmetics[]
All members of the Spears of the Phoenix are equipped with various forms of Augmetics:
- Mind Impulse Unit (MIU) - All members of the Spears of the Phoenix are equipped with MIUs to allow the Astartes to have neural link with their Power Armour, Weaponry, Vehicles, and Servo-skulls.
- Electoos - All members of the Spears of the Phoenix have Electoos that contain all of their personal details, their credit ratings, security grades and access, and details of their social record.
- Electrografts - All members of the Spears of the Phoenix are equipped with electrografts to allow the transfer of knowledge directly into their brains.
- Skinplants - All members of the Spears of the Phoenix are equipped with skinplants on their palms that emit light to function as a tactical flashlight and have wristwatches installed on their wrist.
- Psi-Boosters - All psykers of the Spears of the Phoenix have psi-boosters installed to improve their psychic abilities.
- Mechadendrites - All members of the Spears of the Phoenix indoctrinated into the Cult Mechanicus are allowed to have mechadendrites installed on their bodies.
- Bionic Limbs - Limbs lost are replaced with bionic ones. Bionic hands typically have Digital Weapons installed on each digit.
- Bionic Senses - All damaged ears, noses, and eyes are replaced with bionic versions that are an improvement over the original. Bionic eyes typically have Digital Weapons installed inside them.
- Bionic Organs - When a member of the Spears of the Phoenix looses a non gene-seed organ than it is replaced with a bionic organ that out preforms the original in every way. Gene-seed organs are replaced with a cloned organ grown in the Apothecarion.
Culture[]
Funeral Rites[]
The fallen of the Chapter are honoured with a Company or Chapter feast where the flesh of the dead fallen are consumed and their blood is drunk until only the bones and a single drop of blood remain. Consuming the flesh of the fallen allows his comrades to relive parts of his life through their Omophagea Gene-Seed organs. Combat footage from his Monoscope is watched during the feast and his story told. After all of the flesh and all but a single drop of blood is drunk, his bones will be divided up to the members of his Company for them to be scrimshawed with moments of his life. Once his bones are scrimshawed they will be placed in his Phoenix Casket alongside his Gene-Seed organs and final drop of blood. The scrimshawed skulls of the fallen are typically used to create Servo-skulls and Skull Probes for the Chapter.
A Phoenix Casket is created whenever a Neophyte becomes a fully fledge Astartes of the Spears of the Phoenix. The Phoenix Casket is created in the image of it's intended Astartes with the wings of a phoenix wrapped around them. Inside the casket are slots for all of the Astartes' bones, gene-seed organs and the vial of his final drop of blood. All of it's contents are persevered through the use of stasis fields.
Religious Beliefs[]
Cult Imperialis[]
All members of the Spears of the Phoenix are devout worshipers of the God-Emperor of Mankind. The Chaplains of the Spears of the Phoenix train under the Adeptus Ministorum and wear a Rosarius equipped with a Conversion Field.
Cult Mechanicus[]
All Techmarines are indoctrinated into the Cult Mechanicus and believe in the Deus Mechanicus, the Omnissiah, the Motive Force, and the Machine Spirits. Some Apothecaries of the Spears of the Phoenix choose to train under the Magos Biologis and some become indoctrinated into the Cult Mechanicus aswell. Most Apothecaries who become indoctrinated into the Cult Mechanicus choose to believe in the Primus Humanum philosophy.
Moirae Doctrine[]
The Spears of the Phoenix believe that one day the Cult Imperialis and the Cult Mechanicus will join together and become a singular religion. Only the Master of the Chapter, the Master of Sanctity, the Master of the Forge, the Master of the Apothecarion, the Master of the Librarium, and the Apothecaries of Rebirth are allowed to believe in the Moirae Doctrine for most may find it heretical.
