The Sons of Neptune are a Succesor Chapter of the White Scars, created during the 23rd 'Sentinel' Founding. A Chapter that feels as at home in the vastness of the Void, as they do on the waves, they are known for their swift assaults, crashing against enemy forces like an unrelenting tsunami, pushing until their mission is complete and washing all aside to complete their objectives.

Chapter History

A 23rd Founding Chapter, the Sons of Neptune were seen as a necessity during a period of great upheaval in the galaxy. Hailing from an Ocean World, the High Lords recognised the way in which the Pelagosi people could be utilised to great effect in the never-ending war against the enemies of Mankind. An ocean-bound people, the Pelagosi spent their lives on or around boats. Whether hailing from one of the few islands or archipelagos found on the planet or living on one of the floating city-ships, they were naturals in anything to do with water.

The first conflict that the Sons of Neptune took part in was repelling the invasion of the Ocean Forge World of Etnus by the Ork Warboss known as Captin Killsplashah in 811.M37. Intercepting the Warboss as he left Warp travel over the planet, the battle barge "Skrakabane" fired upon the Warboss's "Deztroyuh" Terror Ship, knocking out its void engines.

As the ship plummeted down through the atmosphere, the battle barge pursued to ensure that it would be destroyed. Thunderhawk gunships were scattered when it was apparent the Terror Ship had survived contact with the water and was making for the nearest factorum.

Sons of Neptune Marines boarded the Terror Ship with close air support from the Thunderhawks. Fighting through the Terror Ship's crew of Freebooter Orks, the 6th Company 3rd squad reached the bridge first with their Sergeant, Andricus Tivel, facing and defeating the Warboss in melee combat, taking his head. Claiming trophies to honour the Great Fisher, the vessel was then sunk. In thanks, the planetary governor of Etnus pledged to build the Sons of Neptune a fleet in thanks, leading to the first Kraken battleships the Sons of Neptune have used ever since being made.

Notable Campaigns

  • Actions over Etnus(811.M37) - The first conflict in which the Sons of Neptune took part.
  • The Compliance of Attalon(923.M37) - Marines of the 4th Company took part in breaching the Archeotech Sea-Domes of the Attalon with Imperial Guard support, bringing the world into compliance. Many STCs were recovered from the Attalon people.
  • The Purge of Siklas(058.M38) - The Sons of Neptune acted as the vanguard in the purging of the pleasure planet Siklas after its fall to a Slaaneshi cult. Their actions including establishing beachheads and landing zones as well as knocking out multiple Void Shields protecting key locations on the planet's surface allowing more landings as well as orbital bombardments to take place.

Chapter Homeworld

Pelago

Departmento Cartographicae pict-file of Pelago, the Sons of Neptune Chapter homeworld.

The planet Pelago is located within the Segmentum Tempestus. An Ocean World, the planet is almost entirely covered in water save for some islands and archipelagos. Almost all of the population of Pelago live on or near the water. Various large villages are located on the islands and archipelagos, built from the native trees on the planet, carefully sourced so as not to wipe them out.

Since the planet's reintegration into the Imperium, a new phenomenon has appeared on Pelago. Huge city-ships, built from reclaimed starships or previously destroyed parts of the Sons of Neptune water fleet that have been repaired to make them seaworthy again, have been constructed to cope with the planets growing population. These enormous patchwork ships are able to carry the population of at least a small city and contain everything needed to keep up with their needs as they drift across the planet. Many of the armaments located on these ships are still operational to fight off the many dangerous sea creatures found on Pelago.

The Capital city of Pelago is located on one of these city-ships. Known as Salacia, it is built upon the remnants of an Imperial Navy battleship that crashed into the ocean of Pelago. Brought back to the surface and salvaged, the battleship was transformed into a city built in the style of ancient Boeotia from Ancient Terra using the marble quarried from locations across Pelago as a luxury resource for the wider Imperium. The upper decks are used as the higher classes's living areas, with the bridge and command centre being repurposed as the planetary governor's residence while the lower classes live in the lower decks of the city-ship where there are no real marble buildings and it looks almost the same as when it was an Imperial battleship. What was once the dorsal deck has been converted into what is known as Neptune's Agora, a vast market and trading district for merchants, both Pelagosi and Rogue Traders visiting the planet. The vast cathedral structures of the battleship have retained their look, with their purpose now being the worship of The Great Fisher, the name which the Emperor goes under on Pelago.

Enormous dangerous creatures live in the oceans, a constant threat to the planet's inhabitants. Giant sea serpents known as the Skraka hunt ships, eager to drag them down and feast on their crew. The dreaded Pelagos Shark is always on the prowl; if driven mad by a drop of blood, they will not stop until they have had their fill. Massive crablike creatures known as Ironclaws, scramble ashore on the islands, with powerful pincers that can split a normal human in half with one snap.

Fortress-Monastery

The Port is the Fortress-Monastery of the Sons of Neptune. Located on the largest island found on Pelago, Corth, it has been converted into a fortress city used for housing the Chapter when not on Crusades or Missions as well as any menials or attached guard. The Chapter command is housed in the mountain, Mount Pantokrat, that looks over the island along with the entire main area of the Fortress-Monastery. The entire island is surrounded by high diamantine walls with a port open to the water, housing the battleships and destroyers used in monitoring the planet.

A wide processional avenue leads up from this port directly to Mount Pantokrat. At the end of this avenue lies the Flood Gate. An enormous Adamantine and Ceramite gate built into the face of the mountain, surrounded by defences, the gate features the symbol of the Chapter across it, splitting open allowing entrance to the Fortress-Monastery.

Great Hall

The Great Hall of the Sons of Neptune chapter is located at the peak of the mountain. The peak has been flattened with the Great Hall being constructed in the style of the traditional huts of Pelago, wooden walls and floor with large open spaces looking out to the blue horizon and a thatched roof made of Pelagosi palm leaves. The Tide Master's throne has its back to the east, where the sun will rise behind him. The throne is carved from a single boulder of Basalt from the sea floor, raised by Triton Tethys, first Tide Master of the Sons of Neptune, who carved it with patterns reflecting the ocean and topped by a carving of the Great Fisher. Reaching the Great Hall requires climbing the Fisher's Path, a staircase carved into the very mountain, along which statues of notable members of the Chapter are carved, looking out over the vast ocean surface of Pelago, with details of their achievements and carvings or mosaics in the traditional Pelagosi style of their greatest battles covering the mountain face surrounding them.

Reclusiam

Librarius

In the depths of the waters surrounding The Port sits a reinforced glasscrete dome surrounded by defence platforms capable of unleashing various methods of death against water based attacks either underwater or on the surface of the ocean. Within this dome sits the Librarius of the Sons of Neptune. Able to be shielded by diamantine shutters that can surround it, to protect it from attack, infiltration or prying eyes, the enormous dome houses all of the collected knowledge and history of the Chapter as well as secrets known only to the Wave Breakers.

Combat Doctrine

The Sons of Neptune were established around the tactics of performing amphibious and beach assaults, launching assault boats from larger ships directly onto beaches, whether to assault enemy fortresses or fortifications or traitorous planetary governors' mansions or estates. They are also adept at boarding actions, being able to clear enemy ships with minimal problems or losses whether on the open water or the Void.

The Sons of Neptune are usually brought in to mount beach assaults against targets that are unapproachable by air or land. Whether this is due to overwhelming anti-air or anti-infantry and vehicle defences, Void Shields or sub-optimal land features or environment factors, this does not stop the Sons of Neptune during their beach assaults. As soon as they reach the shore they are advancing across the beach, unswerving and unstoppable in their bid to reach the defenders.

Their power armour is also able to be sealed along with their assault vehicles so that they may perform actions against cities or complexes found beneath the waves. Finding a weak point in their defences, they will break through, moving with the water that will flow through the breach, overwhelming many defenders with ease.

Chapter Beliefs

The Great Fisher

During the period of history known as The Age of Strife, the Pelagosi people, isolated as they were from the rest of the Galaxy, formed their own belief system on their place in the Universe. They came to worship a deity known as Neptune, the Great Fisher, a god who controlled the wind and the waves, as well as gave them light and hope. The Great Fisher also gave them food in the form of fish. The nemesis of the Great Fisher was the Crab-Titan, lord of Darkness and Death, who controlled the Ironclaws that reaped a toll on their people as well as the killer sea creatures that stalked the oceans.

Following their rediscovery after the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy had passed, the Pelagosi were beset by preachers of the Imperial Cult, teaching them of the God-Emperor. When these preachers realised the people were open to the idea, but would not give up their belief of the Great Fisher, they tried another tactic. Integrating their beliefs into the Imperial Cult, they told the Pelagosi that the God-Emperor was the Great Fisher; that He would provide for them now, that their oceans would never empty of fish so long as they kept their faith in Him.

The Sons of Neptune all hold this belief close to their hearts as they engage the enemies of Mankind. They fight for the Great Fisher, hunting foes as they hunted fish back on Pelago. Every vessel captured or sunk honours Him, as He gains control over said vessel. When they fall in His service, they will journey to His side in His ocean kingdom, never to go hungry or thirsty again, travelling the waves of time eternally on a boat that will show their accomplishments.

Hunting across the Stars

One thing that the Sons of Neptune have in common with their parent Chapter is their love of the hunt. As Neophytes are taken from the strongest of the planetary stock, all of these Aspirants have ingrained hunting abilities from Millenia of fishing for their food, becoming unequalled hunters of the waves. Swift and deadly with their fishing equipment, they have fought off deadly predators to keep their catch every time they take to the ocean.

Taking their skills into their second life as a Son of Neptune, they have the same adeptness and finesse with their melee weapons as they had with their tridents and spears on their boats. For this reason, and their innate love of hunting, the Sons of Neptune have adapted a creed from the White Scars, that of the Master of the Hunt.

Known as the Wave Stalker, the Sons of Neptune's Master of the Hunt revels in the chase and relentless pursuit of his prey. A Fisher-Son who is chosen to take this mantle receives great honour within the Chapter, donning the Artifice armour of the Wave Stalker, inscribed with the name of the Great Fisher himself, Neptune, and with a helmet resembling the representations of the Great Fisher found across Pelago, he is seen as the wrath of the ocean itself. The armour itself is almost entirely golden, save the teeth of Skraka and Pelagos Shark that adorn it as well as the scales of the great sea serpents that are as hard as ceramite.

Every quarter century, atop the Fortress Monastery of the Sons of Neptune the Wave Stalker is called before the Tide Master in the Great Hall and given his target. From Neptune's Rutter, a book detailing the details, description and last known location of their enemies who fled before the Sons of Neptune, an appropriate target is selected. With their target selected, the Wave Stalker leaves Pelago, not to return until they bring back their trophy or they die.

Hunts have been known to last for years and even decades before their target has been defeated. Upon a successful hunt, the Wave Stalker returns with the target's head or an important trophy held aloft. This trophy is taken by the Master of the Abyss, the Sons of Neptune's Reclusiarch, to be preserved and added to Neptune's Bounty. The head is stripped of flesh and then lowered into molten gold, an abundant resource on Pelago found beneath the waves, or if a trophy has been returned instead, it is simply dunked in molten gold. These gold-plated trophies are then blessed and purged of any potential corruption and added to Neptune's Bounty, a pile of gold-plated trophies dating back to the founding of the chapter, located in the Reclusiam, to honour the Great Fisher and thank Him for allowing their hunt to be successful.

Chapter Gene-Seed

Primarch's Curse: 'Skraka's Savagery'

The White Scars and their Successor Chapters are known as being noble honourable warriors that succumb to moments of savagery in battle. Many speculate on whether this was an inherent flaw from the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, if it was a flaw from his upbringing on Chogoris or if it comes from the genetic material of the original White Scars, tribesmen from the steppes. The Sons of Neptune have inherited this from their primogenitors, attributing it to the fearsome beasts that inhabit their homeworld.

The savagery hidden within all sons of the Khan is known to show itself in two stages:

  • Stage 1 -A Moment Unrestrained:
  • Stage 2- Suppressed Rage:

The Black Walk

An important final step within an aspirant's journey towards becoming a Sons of Neptune Neophyte is that he must undertake The Black Walk. The aspirants are brought aboard a deep-sea submersible by the Abyss Walkers and taken far down below the waves to the darkest depths. There they are made to walk into Keto's Lair, a pitch black cave where it is believed the goddess of monsters and the deep dwells. Withstanding the crushing pressure as they hold their breath, the aspirants must return back and tell the Abyss Walkers of what visions or horrors they have seen. They are judged accordingly and if they are deemed good tidings, the aspirant may continue on his path towards becoming a neophyte. Those deemed as a curse to the chapter will be left for Keto.

Marines ascending to the rank of Fisher-Son will repeat this journey, unarmed and unarmoured so that the goddess may reveal if they will be worthy of taking the name of a son of the Great Fisher.

Chapter Fleet

Void Fleet

Water Fleet

Being an aquatic warfare-based Chapter, the Sons of Neptune have an extensive variety of watercraft for various purposes. The most celebrated of their ships protect their home-world of Pelago from attack and patrol its ocean. These ships are docked within the harbour at The Port and attended to by menials, techpriests and reserve Techmarines.

Below are listed the watercraft utilised by the Sons of Neptune. These vessels are manufactured on the Ocean Forge World of Etnus for the Sons of Neptune as well as for distribution to various Imperial Guard Regiments and PDFs. These craft are usually deployed to surface by specially constructed dropships, landers and conveyors depending on the size of the vessel, threat or necessity.

  • Piranha Watercrafts - The smallest craft of the aquatic fleet of the Sons of Neptune. Small, single-marine vehicles these fulfil the function of harassing craft or are utilised for single marine boarding actions. Effortlessly skimming across the water at high speeds, these nimble vehicles also pack a twin-linked Bolter to fire upon their target as well as whatever armaments the driver may be carrying, usually a bolt pistol, frag and krak grenades. Many Scout Marines within the Sons of Neptune spend some time operating these vehicles, performing scouting missions observing enemy positions or vehicles before assualts as well as harrying actions or supporting fire for larger crafts.
  • Manta Assault Craft - The most commonly utilised watercraft by the Sons of Neptune. These craft are launched from larger vessels, such as the Cruisers, which function as amphibious assault ships. Completely watertight, these vessels can carry one 10-man squad of Marines to battle. They are crewed by a driver and a gunner operating the heavy bolter and missile launcher mounted on the craft used for clearing the landing site or breaching fortifications as necessary. Heavy armour on the front and top of the craft help it to resist much of the fire it will take on approach.
  • Hammerhead Corvette -
  • Tiger-Shark Gunboat -
  • Nautilus Submarine -
  • Shark Destroyer -
  • Marlin-Class Light and Heavy Cruisers -
  • Megalodon Aircraft Carrier - The largest support ship that the Sons of Neptune aquatic fleet has under their command.
  • Kraken Battleship - The largest combat ships of the Sons of Neptune aquatic fleet, these are the vessels the Marines of the chapter are most proud of.
