"Everything has a purpose. Yet my mind is uncertain of these trying times. His bulwark was brought to the brink. From onslaught from the mindless beast to the corruption of humanity, we have stood and bleed on the soils of humanity's great empire. For my breast. For my mind. For all that I was and all that I am is my own now. I once wore my Chapter's colors with pride. But now I forge the future of my brothers, as our Father had done for us."
—Freidrick Eledan, 1st Chapter Master of the Paragons of Dorn

The Silver Shards are a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter descended from the Primarch Rogal Dorn and successors to the honourable and proud Imperial Fists Chapter, with their founding being held during the 4th Founding following the disastrous events of the War of the Beast, a campaign against the largest Ork WAAAGH! seen since the time of the Great Crusade.

Following the successful defeat of The Beast by Imperial Forces, the Lord Commander of the Imperium Maximus Thane, decreed that the Imperium would raise many new Chapters of Astartes in order to maintain the Imperium's control over its systems due to the calamities brought on due to the vast greenskin attacks.

All Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes were ordered to release a portion of their Veterans to provide the initial basis for this Founding, the greatest since the First Founding.

From the onset of their birth, the Silver Shards, formally known as the Paragons of Dorn, were met with the political and social strife that plagued the events of the 4th Founding and the period known as The Beheading. The Imperium itself was brought to its knees due to corruption and civil unrest that lasted several Terran decades.

The Paragons of Dorn began military operation in Segmentum Solar in order to maintain active warp routes and instill Imperial presence over planetary systems during this period. Their name was reclassified following the Aderllian Massacre in which their home-world was destroyed by Traitor Astartes and their chapter was subsequently brought to its knees.

Currently, the Silver Shards are a fleet-based Chapter, with its main operation being in northern Segmentum Ultima, however, several crusades have been declared prior and presently that took the Chapter into the Eastern Fringe and Segmentum Obscurus, where the ruins of their homeworld reside.

Chapter History

The Founding

Following the campaign against the massive Warlord known only as The Beast, the Imperium was left a shattered and brutalized realm. Thousands of worlds and sectors were left reeling in its wake. The Adeptus Astartes had sacrificed much in order to halt the massive Greenskin invasion, with many chapters being decimating or left in a state of ruin.

As the Imperium began the long process of rebuilding, the Adeptus Astartes begin to rebuild its sorely depleted ranks. In this effort, the Paragons of Dorn were born. Created during the 4th Founding, alongside several other Chapters, the Paragons of Dorn were brought forth to bring order to an Imperium rife with civil discourse and insurrection, and to help restore Imperial law. Under its first Chapter Master, Freidrick Eledan, the Chapter took its place in the grand design to rebuild faith and security in the Imperial government. During the events following the War of the Beast, the Chapter was divided from its original host of thirty marines, departing to protect vital mandeville points throughout Segmentum Solar. For the next forty Terran years, the Chapter maintained its garrison role, recruiting from nearby worlds through a system of recruiting outpost named Sentinels.

Paragons of Dorn

Paragons of Dorn Battle-Brother (Pre-Adrellian Massacre).

By 616.M32, the Paragons of Dorn had reached the standard numbers of an Astartes Chapter. With their ranks filled and poised for gaining a name for themselves, the Paragons of Dorn entered into their first large-scale martial action as a Chapter. Though only partial records remain of the battle, it is known that the Invention of the Gorge began as an attempt to repeal civil strife from the system. The Gorge, known as the Gorge of Akestis, was a sub-sector of Imperial space that housed a great bulwark of mining worlds and outpost around its asteroid belts that lined the Gorge. The Gorge itself was never directly effected by the conflict of the great Ork WAGGHH! However, the Gorge, like much of the Imperium, was indirectly effected due to the instability of the Imperial government and the mass unrest causing shortages of needed resources.

These issues combined caused the Gorge to enter into a state of disillusion, as food shortages became common over the system. With food being rare and rationing effecting even the wealthy nobility, the mining worlds began to see mass worker strikes. The most prominent is the Incursion of Akestis Prime, a large mining facility that orbits the large gas giant of Akestis Prime. The Incursion of Akestis Prime was a outright riot that saw the deaths of many miners and security forces, as both sides began to clash over the finite reserves of food stock.

Upon word reaching the Paragons of Dorn, the Chapter declared to intervene to restore order. The thought at the time was that no party was truly at fault, but peace needed to be restored until supplies and resources could be brought to bare. Upon arriving in the Gorge, the system had changed drastically. The Incursion of Akestis Prime had escalated into a minor-scale war, with several minor outpost around the planet organizing in rebellion against the Planetary Governor, disrupting the vital mining operation and threatening Imperial control. The following campaign lasted five Terran days. By the end of the Intervention, Imperial control was returned to the mining cities. In their effort, the Chapter was granted a home-world the world of Adrellia in the Segmentum Obscurius, a civilised world.

Upon claiming the world of Adrellia, the Chapter refrained from directly influencing the planetary system at first, however, following the death of Chapter Master Eledan, the chapter took a forward approach in integrating the system and world into a semi-autonomous world. Under the Chapter, civil service and military instillation were not only constructed, but were operated and run by both Astartes and members of the civilian population, in order to groom the generations of Astartes and ensure they possessed the following skills: Intellect, Workmanship, and Statesmanship.

The Adrellian Massacre

"For each brother lost, I kneel to their memory. For my brothers, my home, and my heart have fallen. Our breast roared to the anthem of war. Each plasma. Each bolter shell. Each blooded fist. They fought so that I may carry on their memory for another generation. A generation that knows the sacrifices of our kind and the true duty in which we aspire to accomplish. The Shards of their armor is what remains. The Silver Shards of their broken bodies. These are no longer theirs. We are these Silver Shards. We walk in their name and memory. We are these Silver Shards."
— Kathe Mackius, 13th Chapter Master of the Silver Shards

The Adrellian Massacre, alternatively known as the Fall of Ardellian or the Humiliation of the Paragons, was a grave catastrophe that overtook the the bulwark of the chapter in 729.M34 during Dispute of Iron (ca. 600-730.M34), in which the Iron Warriors shattered into various warbands. Prior to the Adrellian Massacre, the world of Adrellian was poised in a time of celebration. With the promotion of Aachen Vangor as the 12th Chapter Master of the Paragons of Dorn and de facto Governor of the Adrellian system, the Chapter found the election of Vangor fell on their holiest day of the Chapter, the Sacrament of Bestowed Bless. During this day, the bulwark of the chapter is brought to the world of Adrellia for pray and remembrance of the Primarch in which they carry his name, Rogal Dorn. Every fifty years this is done, however, due to an ongoing dispute between newly elected Karzarhan Governor and the fears of another war in the region, the Captain of the 3rd Company, Julius Runge, led an expedition of thirty marines away, while the remaining chapter returned to the world of Adrellia for celebration and prayer for three Terran days.

Unannounced to the Chapter, pilgrims to the world arrived not for celebration or prayer, but to bring destruction. Little is known who or how many were present, or any of the true calculations needed to plan such an invasion. But what is certain, is that cultist arrived onto the world and polluted the under cities with heretical text and sacrifice. From the moments the celebration began and Vangor was sworn as Chapter Master, the heretics opened portals across the major hive cities of Drasmis, Dorken, Elisia, and Portitum. The skies of the world shattered, turning it a purplish hue of ghastly night. Out from the portal the ancestral enemy of their forebears had returned. The Traitorous legionaries of the Iron Warriors marched from the newly open gate, the warband of the Steel Brethren. The first attack began from moment the Steel Brethren had organized in the sewers of Droken, where the main headquarters of the Chapter was stationed in the Great Citadel. The First Battle of the Citadel began as hordes of daemon engines cracked through the city streets, followed by the bolter and plasma of Iron Warriors Heretic Astartes. The heavy-walled bulwarks on the towers forced the First Battle of the Citadel to conclude in Imperial Victory. By this point word was spreading across the world of possible invasion, but with attacks across the world the Chapter was unable to organize for the first two days of battle, with the city of Elisia being overrun by day break. The newly appointed Chapter Master, Vangor, detailed a plan of defense that concentrated the cities of Drasmis and Droken, using the peninsula both hives were situated upon to create a natural barrier as the Chapter and local garrison moved to secure battle lines between both cities.

With the cities of Portitum and Elisia abandoned, the Steel Brethren moved to destroy the remaining and beleaguered defenders. The Second Battle of the Great Citadel saw the onslaught of the warband. Vangor entrusted the defense of the Citadel to Kathe Mackius, Captain of the Fifth Company. During the onslaught. it was Mackius who bled with his men before the walls of the Citadel, under the horrific onslaught of the siege, as the towers began to collapse and the great works of their Chapter burned and looted. One hundred Astartes were stationed in the Citadel, only twenty remained when relief from the Honor Guard of the First Company arrived. By the time of their arrival, the gene-vaults of the chapter were looted and Mackius himself was founded broken and bloodied, his arm and leg ripped as he stood with chainsword in hand, surrounded by tens of the Steel Brethren. These great stands occurred all over the world, with battle brothers laying their lives to secure the battle lines.

The most famous of these being the Battle of the Lost Bastion. In the underhive of Drasmis, the Chapter, after recovering the stocks from the gene-labs in the Interdix Medicae, fight their way through massed Traitor forces, running a deadly gauntlet through the underhives of the sub-system sewers and industrial growth in order to deliver the gene-stock off world. In the underhive, the devastator marines of the Second and Fourth Companies stood their ground, electing to sacrifice themselves in order to bide time for the Medicae. Armed with plasma cannons, it is said that their blue hues of Emperor's justice never missed, slaying their traitors by the droves before succumbing to the onslaught. Before the final battle brother was slain, Franz Draken bid the traitors one last folly and detonated a cash of explosives under the hive tunnels, causing the section of the industrial mechanicum to collapse and close off the remaining under hive. But despite their effort, the Paragons of Dorn were pushed to the last space port when the unthinkable happened. The world itself was was consumed by the warp, its surface was broken and ripped from the material realm.

In the end, only Mackius survived. The remaining Paragons, numbering at seventy, fought tooth and nail during the Fall of the Last Space Port. By Order of Vangor, Mackius was to flee the world and find the remains of Third Company. The hope was to to retake the world by the aid of the Imperium, as the cosmic disturbances of heretics portals and worshiping disrupting all communication from the world. But as Mackius fled the system, the immaterium consumed what remained of Adrellia and the final sons of Paragons of Dorn. Since their founding, there were now no more than a handful of Astartes, shattered and humiliated in the eyes of themselves and their Primarch.

The Rebirth

Silver Shards Intercessor

A Intercessor Primaris of the 1st Battleline Squad

Following the destruction of Andrellia, the remains of the Chapter were shattered. Mackius traveled system to system before being rediscovered by an Imperial Naval vessel outside the Succis Hive Sector. Upon his rediscovery, Mackius and the gene-stock that survived the Andrellian Massacre were brought to the Hive World of Succis, where the first tales of the Massacre came to light. By order of the Planetary Governor, word was sent to the the Third Company, under Captain Julius Runge, who was off world in the Karzarhan System. It is said when word reached the Third Company, the entire chapter was brought to its knees.

Mackius, despite being the Captain of the Fifth Company, took command of the Chapter, declaring himself Chapter Master. The Third Company conceded the command of the Chapter, or what was left of it. Mackius and Runge met several Terran weeks after the Massacre, with the remnants of the Third Company arriving on Succis. For what was spoken between Mackius and Runge is hidden behind mystery, only the Chapter Master knowing its full extent. But it theorized, is that Mackius believed the Massacre was brought due to the failures of the Chapter. Their love for one world left them open to attack and vulnerable in the eyes of their enemies. Their entire Chapter payed the price and failed to defeat their historic enemies. To Mackius and the remains of the Chapter, they were no worthy of being sons of Dorn and therefore could never bare his name in pride until they have won the Great Triumph.

The only remains of the world were the stories of valor and the shards of Mackius' broken armor. From the Congress of Succis, the Chapter was reclassified to the Silver Shards. Their armor was painted blue, in honor of the famed devastator squads that allowed the last of the Chapter's gene-seed stock to survive, and silver, in remembrance of who the once were: The Paragons of Dorn.

Under Mackius and his successors, the Chapter was transformed into a fleet-based organization as the days during their Founding. The old institutions of the Sentinels were re-instituted, with a vast fleet being constructed to lead their eternal crusade: The Darkness. The Darkness is the overall mission of the new Silver Shards, broken by the Traitor and shunned in the eyes of their Father. This is the driving ideology of the Chapter, the rebirth of what was lost.

It would be two millennia before the Chapter was restored to fighting order. Its entire identity was stripped, each battle brother was remade to serve the Darkness and each action was taken to create a legion no longer with the faults of the past.

The Grand Defense

The Grand Defense is the current operation of the Silver Shards against their ancestral enemies who had destroyed their homeworld and humiliated their chapter. With the fall of the Cadian Gate and the driving Chaos threat in Segmentum Ultima and the Segmentum Obscurus, the Iron Warriors began to Grand Siege to finally topple the Imperium. With the Second Siege of Second Siege of Hydra Cordatus (999.M41) ending in the Traitors victory, the current Chapter Master of the Silver Shards, Konrad Thane, declared the Darkness Crusade to turn its full might against the Iron Warriors Traitor Legion. In the wake of the birth of the Great Rift, the Daemon Primarch Perturabo unleashed great sieges on heavily fortified Imperial worlds across the galaxy. The Silver Shards divide themselves into three fleets: Revengence, The Last Bastion, and Iron Gate. Under each Master of Fleet, A vast stream of troops, materiel, and vehicles are sent forth to aid key Chapter and zones dictated priorities by the Chapter. Revengece is sent south to aid the Scythes of the Emperor in the Battle of Hamagora (Unknown Date.M42), The Last Bastion is sent to the White Scars to aid in the Talledus War (Unknown Date.M42), and the Iron Gate is sent to closely follow the Iron Warriors and aid what ever world they can.

Notable Campaigns

  • Intervention of the Gorge (616-621.M32) - Though focused elsewhere, the Imperium was not deaf to the violation of part of its domains. In answering the cries of the Planetary Governor, the might of the Imperium sent the Paragons of Dorn. When the Silver Shards arrived, a squadron of heavily-gunned system craft bored its way through the sphere of captured and retrofitted shipment vessels. The Chapter launched Assault Craft into the war torn stations of the outpost.

Fifty Paragons landed onto the surface of the Mining Outpost of Akestis Lesser, a outpost situated on the northern hemisphere of the world. The battle-filled passages of the void station quickly broke the first wave of insurrectionists, with many surrendering at the sight of Astartes. Within an hour they had configured the station's defenses and depleted the garrison of rebels. With a headquarters established, the Chapter turned to break the three other lesser outpost and then Akestis Prime.

The rebels, sensing defeat in face of the Emperor's own warriors, cut their losses and ran back into the under segments of the mining outpost which were akin to under-hive settlements of hive worlds. The rebel leaders knew the Imperium would not outright destroy the outpost, as the cost of losing the valuable mining operation would cripple the already depleted and waning Imperium. However, the rebels understood an outright campaign would not last against the bolstered Imperial forces. Food was already scare and a prolonged conflict would see thousands die even before combat.

In agreement, the rebel leader, Kis Drasman, ordered one final attack against the Imperial forces. A suicidal attack. While the rebels prepared, the remaining Chapter forces reclaimed the Lesser outpost, with its full attention finally being brought towards Akestis Prime. Understanding the rebels had retreated deep into the various corridors and passages of the outpost, the Chapter Master, Freidrick Eledan, saw one course of action. Two boarding torpedos were launched into the mining station, while sixty marines entered from the surface alongside the Governor's remaining security garrison.

One of the boarding torpedoes contained five Astartes, including Eledan himself. The torpedo was fired into the heart of the outpost, crashing thousands of feet into the heart of the mining station. Upon its opening, the squad moved from room to room, killing and slaughtering the tired and belligerent rebels. Upon the final hour of the fifth day, Eledan put a bolter round through the heart of Kis Drasman, with the last rebel holdouts surrendering after the start of the next rotation. By the end of the Intervention, Imperial control was returned to the mining cities. In their effort, the Chapter was granted a home-world the world of Adrellia in Segmentum Obscurius, a civilised world.
  • Adrellian Massacre (729.M34) - The Adrellian Massacre was the overall destruction of much of the Chapter, by the Steel Brethren warband of the Heretic Astartes. The first attack began from moment the Steel Brethren had organized in the sewers of Droken, where the main headquarters of the Chapter was stationed in the Great Citadel. The First Battle of the Citadel began as hordes of daemon engines cracked through the city streets, followed by the bolter and plasma of Heretic Astartes.

The world itself was was consumed by the warp, its surface was broken and ripped from the material realm.
  • Siege of Bella Zara (802.M36) - The Siege of Bella Zara was the first mass operation carried out by the new Silver Shards Chapter. This siege would prove important to defining the new warfare the Chapter will specialize in as the Silver Shards Chapter. The world of Bella Zara broke out into open rebellion with the aid of the Alpha Legion.

The Adept of the Adeptus Mechanicus was named a Heretek, with Techno Magos Gor Drif leading the insurgency against planetary rule. The Chapter of the Silver Shards arrived with its new mobile Fortress Monastery, the Hallowed Choir to bring the Darkness onto the world. it was clear that they were not here to mediate as their predecessors had once done, rather the chapter began a bombard of the planetary surface, leveling the once proud hive cities while deploying host of Astartes onto the cratered surface. The shambling host of mutants and tech-priest resisted, but the enemy had revealed its hand too early with the attack on a downed flyer outside the hive of Zara center.

The remains of the downed crew readied themselves for a full assault. Soon enough, a vast host of enemy troops, Heretics and mutants advanced on the Chapter. For six Terran Days, the traitors battled the Silver Shards, dying in their thousands as the guns of the Chapter keep gunning their enemies down. While the planetary surface continued to be bombard, the several tank corps of the Chapter were deployed and drove the traitors back.
  • A Light of Darkness (999.M41)- The Silver Shards took part in an unknown campaign remembered only by its name. Following this campaign all records pertaining to it were sealed and declared forbidden.
  • The Grand Siege (Unknown Date.M42) - In the wake of the birth of the Great Rift, the Daemon Primarch Perturabo unleashes great sieges on heavily fortified Imperial worlds across the galaxy. A vast stream of troops, materiel, vehicles and Daemon Engines flows from Medrengard out into the wider galaxy as the Iron Warriors once more make war upon the hated Imperium. In response the Silver Shards begin to send arms and support to various regions of Imperial space in order to maintain the Iron Warriors threat.
  • The Invasion of the Stygius Sector (Unknown Date.M42) - With the invasion of the The Thousand Sons, led by Daemon Primarch Magnus and the Great Changehost, led by M'Kachan, the Silver Shards began a retreating campaign to halt Choas forces in order to bid time for Imperial Forces to retreat from the swiftly falling Stygius Sector.
  • Talledus War (Unknown Date.M42) - During the Talledus War in the Talledus System of the Veritus Sub-sector, the Silver Shards The Last Bastion Fleet led an expedition of Space Marine strike forces in battle against the fleet of the Night Lords, to support the White Scars fleet. The goal was to intervene on the preying upon Imperial shipping in the asteroid field

Chapter Beliefs

Though the Adrellian Massacre occurred several millennia ago, the legacy of its humiliation on the Chapter resides in almost every battle brothers. The failures of the Paragons of Dorn lost them the right to wear their Primarch's name across the stars. Yet, in their final moments their was courage and supreme sacrifice even at the end of the planets existence. The Darkness is the name given to the overall goal of the Chapter. The Darkness is a shadow that covers each aspect of their decisions and their lives, as for the Darkness can only be removed in the Great Triumph. The Great Triumph will restore their names as the Paragons of Dorn, only when they earn his name in battle. The Twelfth Chapter Master and the bulwark of the Paragons were an example that still drives the Silver Shards onward to fresh victories. They prevent them from every loving or caring for a homeworld again, as it brought ruin and damnation to not just their lives but their honor. For what was lost will never be returned until the Great Triumph as emerged.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Silver Shards gene-seed is very stable and has never exhibited signs of mutation. However, over time they have lost the use of two of the special organs produced by the basic Astartes genetic template: the Betcher's Gland, which allows a Space Marine to produce poisonous/acidic spittle, and the Sus-an Membrane, which allows an Astartes to enter a state of suspended animation, similar to the Imperial Fist and all Imperial Fist successors.

Combat Doctrine

The Silver Shards adhere to the doctrines of the Codex Astartes as strictly as their brothers of the Imperial Fist. Squads, companies and Chapter household are all organised according to the standards set forth in that Codex. Despite the Chapter being capable of prosecuting every type of warfare, the Chapter specializes in void combat.

The overall nature of this comes from their obsessive nature of the Darkness. This specialty can be counted as the result of the Chapter's character and doctrines that came from the onset of the Darkness in the Chapter. Rather than an adherence to particular tactics or equipment. The Silver Shards are utterly immovable in their use of void weaponry and ship combat and their mastery of the scientific aspects of war makes them peerless, as the prospect of holding a fortified position comes naturally due to the gene-seed of the Imperial Fist. The same is true in the attack formation. The Silver Shards are able to identify weak points in an enemy's defense, and through relentless application of force reduce them to ruins both from orbit and from heavy ground assaults. The Chapter, however, is reluctant to operate in open fields of combat, rather forcing an enemy to one position or one area in order to maintain control.

This has always been the single-mindedness that has plagued the chapter since they were the Paragons of Dorn. The side effect is that the Chapter's refuse to accept that a position cannot be held or the enemy cannot be cracked by overwhelming odds and there fore has been noted to commit to the last man if the campaign requires so.

Chapter Fleet

The Hallowed Choir

The Silver Shards are a fleet-based chapter centered around the mobile fortress monastery of the Hallowed Choir, a massive mobile fortress and home of the chapter. The Hallowed Choir was built from the remains of the Choir of the Emperor, a battle barge that fought during the Adrellian Massacre. The remains of the Choir of the Emperor were retrofitted and rebuilt to serve as the headquarters of the new Silver Shard chapter. The remaining segments of the original battle barge were turned into monetarist halls and retrofitted gun batteries to provide ampil fire power and a reminder of the Chapter's history.

Battle Fleets

Due to being a fleet based Chapter, the Silver Shards are broken into three main fleets of operations: Revengence, The Last Bastion, and The Iron Gate. These fleets maintain autonomous Masters of Fleet, yet, all answer to the Chapter Master who presides in the Hallowed Choir in fleet Revengence. Each fleet is designed for void combat. With each fleet maintaining a large number of operating barges, cruisers, and escort craft for planetary assaults.

Chapter Relics

  • The Helm of Vangor - The Helm of Vangor is the only relic of the Paragons of Dorn recovered by the Silver Shards Chapter. The Helm of Vangor was a gift to Mackius during to exodus from Adrellia during the Fall of the Last Space Port. Mackius' predecessor, Aachen Vangor, gifted his Helm to Mackius, in order to for the tales of their sacrifice to be told for generations and their sacrifice to never be forgotten.
  • The Shards of the Fallen - The Shards of the Fallen are the remains of the power armor of Kathe Mackius. The armor itself was badly damaged during the Adrellian Massacre, with Mackius losing his right arm and left leg during the Second Battle of the Great Citadel. The Armor is preserved inside the Hall of Fallen Warriors, the deep inner sanctum of the Hallowed Choir. When a battle brother becomes a veteran or honored member of the chapter, a shard of its armor is taken and passed to the brother. A reminder of their Darkness and the failures of their chapter.
  • The Robe of Blood - The Robe of Blood is the symbol of piety and accomplishment for the Chapter. Each veteran and officer carries a robe, but the Robe of Blood is the denotation of the Chapter Master. Once white, the Robe of Blood has forever been coated in the dried blood of the previous fore bearers of the position, with the Robe now being ordained by the fallen Master's of the Chapter.
