The Shenandoah Knights is a Loyalist Successor Chapter created from the lineage of the vaunted and stoic Imperial Fists during the 25th Founding, the so-called 'Bastion Founding'. A fleet-based Chapter, the Shenandoah Knights lay no claim to any one world. However, they have appointed themselves as guardians of the Shenandoah sub-sector located in the Segmentum Obscurus. Maintaining a network of chapter keeps throughout the sector, these stalwart defenders have stood silent vigil over their chosen demesne for millennia protecting it from threats both within and without.

Like their progenitors, the Shenandoah Knights are also believers in the divinity of the God-Emperor, and as such, they maintain strong ties with the Ecclesiarchy as well as a close relationship with the Adepta Sororitas, most notably, the Order of the Emerald Rose. However, due to their adherence to the Imperial Creed, they often clash with other Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes who do not share their beliefs.

Chapter History[]

Origins[]

The Shenandoah Knights are a loyalist Successor Chapter of the zealous and fierce Black Templars Chapter, who themselves are descended from the proud lineage of the ancient Imperial Fists. The chapter was founded during the 25th Founding, the so-called ‘Bastion Founding’.

Chapter Home World[]

The Shenandoah Knights are a fleet-based chapter and don’t claim any actual world as their home, but they do claim the Shenandoah sub-sector in the Segmentum Obscurus as their protectorate and maintain chapter keeps known as Knight’s Keep on the inhabited planets of the sub-sector. Before the Knight claimed this area of space, it had a proud military history and provided many regiments to the Imperial Guard and while the numbers may have dropped, it’s a tradition that is continued.

The only planet within the sub-sector that doesn't have a Knight's Keep is the Forge world of Drookie. However, this is where all the chapter's Techmarines are trained in the mysteries of the Machine Cult.

Notable Campaigns[]

Chapter Organisation[]

The Shenandoah Knights maintain many of the traditions of their progenitors. However, they have never been known to field Scout-type units of any kind, as it’s seen as a dishonourable way to fight. Instead, the chapter’s assault squads fill the role of reconnaissance.

The chapter loosely follows the Codex Astartes, however rather than ten individual companies it has 3 Priories. Each Priory is autonomous and is governed by a Prior, but they still answer to the Grand Master, who commands the first Priory. Each Priory has its own Armoury, Reclusium and Apothecarium, just like a chapter.

Each Priory is divided into four Preceptories (Companies), which follow the structure of a company as set down in the Codex Astartes. The First Preceptory of each Priory is commanded by the Prior, and like the first company of Codex chapters, it contains the Priory's veterans and Emperor's Champion.

Officer Ranks[]

  • Grand Prior - Chapter Master equivalent.
  • Prior - Priors are the commanders of each Priory. The Priors have the final say within their Priory. The commander of the First Priory is known by the title of Grand Prior, this is to show that he is the first among equals. Priors are the equivalent of a Captain
  • Preceptor - Lieutenant equivalent. They command the Preceptories.

Specialist Ranks[]

  • Prelate - A Prelate is the chapter's Reclusiarch equivalent. The Prelates are referred to by their Priory. When the Prelate of a Priory dies it is the duty of the surviving Prelates to choose his replacement, mostly this is a Chaplain from within that Priory, but sometimes it can be one from one of the other Priories. Since the chapter has no Librarius, the Prelates and Chaplains fill the place of Librarians.
  • Chief Apothecary - The chapter's highest ranking Apothecary
  • Apothecary
  • Forge Master - Forge Master is the title given to a Priory’s Master of the Forge and he commands the Priory's Armoury.
  • Techmarine
  • Emperor's Champion - Like their progenitors the Knights maintain the tradition of the Emperor's Champion. When a brother-knight is raised to the position of Emperor's Champion he gives up his own name and takes on the name of the sword he wields.
  • Preceptory Champion - Company Champion equivalent.
  • Ancient - Standard Bearer.

Line Ranks[]

  • Master Sergeant - Veteran Sergeant equivalent.
  • Knight-Sergeant - Sergeant equivalent.
  • Brother-Knight - Battle-Brother equivalent.
  • Squire - Neophyte equivalent.
  • Aspirant

Chapter Recruitment[]

The ways that the Knights recruit on each planet vary.

Chapter Beliefs[]

The people of the Shenandoah sub-sector are believers of the Imperial Creed and as such they venerate the Emperor as the God of Man and this has influenced the chapter’s own beliefs to the point where they share it. This belief has also meant that they have a strong relationship with the Ecclesiarchy and a close relationship with the Adepta Sororitas, especially the Order of the Emerald Rose. It’s not uncommon for the Knights to be seen fighting alongside Adepta Sororitas forces. This belief has caused them to have a somewhat strained relationship with other Astartes chapters who do not share their beliefs.

Chapter Gene-Seed[]

As a Successor Chapter of the Imperial Fists, the Shenandoah Knights share their genetic legacy with their genetic forebears and have inherited many of the characteristics of their progenitor. However, the chapter claims their first generation's gene-seed came from the Black Templars' tithe to Terra. Sharing similar traits of their forebears, the Knights have also lost the use of two of the special organs produced by the basic Astartes genetic template: the Betcher's Gland, which allows a Space Marine to produce poisonous/acidic spittle, and the Sus-an Membrane, which allows an Astartes to enter a state of suspended animation.

Another peculiar quirk of the Chapter is the Shenandoah Knights' hatred for the witch and heretic, even beyond that of other Chapters. It is a religious madness that is often expressed with valour and fearlessness on the battlefield, but it can also turn the Battle-Brother against all creatures touched with the psyker’s gift, be they friend or foe.

Primarch's Curse: Burn the Witch[]

  • Stage 1 (Fear the Witch) - The Battle-Brother is uncomfortable around psykers. He feels their dark powers crawling on his flesh and burrowing into his brain as the Battle-Brother’s disquiet shows through.
  • Stage 2 (Hate the Witch) - The Battle-Brother can scarcely stand the presence of psykers and abhors their sight. If there is a psyker is in the Battle-Brother’s Kill-Team (such as a Librarian), or he must work with a psyker ally. Until such a time as the psyker leaves or is killed.
  • Stage 3 (Kill the Witch) - The Battle-Brother cannot stand any psykers to live and flies into a rage when he sees them. When fighting enemy psykers, the Battle-Brother must seek them out (choosing the most obviously powerful first) and kill them to the exclusion of all other foes. This can be especially problematic for the Kill-Team, should they need to take a psyker alive.

Combat Doctrine[]

Due to being a fleet based chapter, it seldom comes together in one place and each Priory has developed it's idiosyncrasies. The third Priory who favours assault tactics has a higher number of assault units and favours deploying via drop pods. Whereas the second Priory favours long range tactics and has a higher number of fire support units.

The Chapter favours using bladed weapons, as they view them as an honourable weapons.

Battle-Cry[]

To date, there has been no recorded battle cry. It almost seems as if the chapter fights in silence and communicates via vox-caster when needed. The only time during a battle that anything is uttered is when they have to communicate with another force.

Notable Shenandoah Knights[]

  • Grand Master Waddell - Waddell is the chapter's current Grand Master, He is the second to hold the office in the chapter's history.
  • Grand Master Bulloch - Bulloch was the Shenandoah Knight's first Grand Master and was killed in a warp accident upon the Battle Barge Sea King, the chapter's flagship.
  • Forge Master Wayland - Weyland was the first Forge Master of the First Priory. He was a master craftsman and sword-smith and crafted seven power swords. Six are still used by the chapter.

Chapter Fleet[]

  • Sea King (Battle Barge): The Sea King is the home of the First Priory and the Grand Master's flagship.
  • Shenandoah's Revenge (Battle Barge): Home of the Second Priory.
  • The Majidi (Battle Barge): Home of the Third Priory.

Chapter Relics[]

  • Swords of Wayland - This is the collective term given to the seven master-crafted power swords made by Forge Master Wayland. Six are still used by the chapter:
    • Albion – Wielded by the chapter's Grand Master.
    • Morax – Wielded by the Prior of the Second Priory.
    • Orias – Wielded by the Prior of the Third Priory.
    • Solas – Wielded by the Emperor's Champion of the First Priory.
    • Elidor – Wielded by the Emperor's Champion of the Second Priory.
    • Beleth – Wielded by the Emperor's Champion of the Third Priory.
    • Flauros – The current location and condition of this sword is unknown. However there is a legend within the chapter that Wayland gave it to the first Canoness of the Order of the Emerald Rose as a gift, to commemorate the founding of the order. This has not been confirmed or denied by the members of the order.

Chapter Appearance[]

Chapter Colours[]

The Shenandoah Knights primarily wear deep green coloured power armour with steel coloured backpack. The colour of theshoulder pauldron's trim denotes the Priory to which a Brother-Knight belongs, silver for the first Priory, brass for the second Priory and bone for the third Priory. The Aquila or Imperialis worn on their plastrons (chest guards) are gold in colour. The Chapter's iconography is proudly born on their left pauldrons, while the right pauldron displays a large black coloured squad specialist icon, which indicates a battle-brother's assigned squad specialty (Fire Support, Close Support, Battleline, Veteran or Command). A small black coloured Roman numeral stenciled on the right shoulder pauldron inset indicates a battle-brother's assigned squad, while a much larger black coloured Roman numeral stenciled on the left poleyn (knee guard) indicates their assigned company.

Chapter Badge[]

The Shenandoah Knights Chapter iconography takes the form of a large black coloured angelic wing ending in a gauntlet gripping a sword, centred upon a field of deep green.

Relations[]

Allies[]

  • Order of the Emerald Rose - The chapter has a close relationship with the Order of the Emerald Rose of the Adepta Sororitas.
  • Obsidian Panthers - The Obsidian Panthers are Adeptus Astartes Chapter within the Shenandoah sub-sector. They are an Ultima founding chapter.
  • Shaladorian Angels - An Adeptus Astartes Chapter within the Shenandoah sector.
