The Scarlet Shields are a 17th Founding successor chapter of the Blood Angels. As a successor chapter of the Blood Angels, the Scarlet Shields suffer from the twin flaws of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage that all Scions of Sanguinius suffer from. However, the Scarlet Shields shoulder their flaws with honour and nobility, putting their duty above all else. It is this commitment to their duty that has allowed them to gain a small measure of control over their genetic curse.
The Scarlet Shields are based on the world of Skogoris IV, a world brimming with volcanoes, the air thick with hot, volcanic ash. It is from this volatile world that the Scarlet Shields primarily get their recruits, and it breeds strong, hardy young men and boys eager to do battle and serve the Emperor.
The Scarlet Shields share a close friendship with their fellow Chapters of the Vermillion Snakes, Fulminators of Dawn, Reavers Combatant, Tempest Absolvers and the Titans of Anguish. The battle-brothers of these six chapters are extremely close, with many becoming "honour brothers." This is particularly the case amongst the Chapter Masters of the chapters.
The Scarlet Shields are masters in "Hammer and Anvil" Tactics, as well as pincer movement tactics, interdiction tactics, Bull Horn formation tactics, exhaustion tactics and encirclement tactics.
Chapter History
A Chapter with a long and proud history, the Scarlet Shields have many ancient traditions that they maintain to this day. During their time as the defenders of the realm of humanity, they have fought the vile xenos and the minions of Chaos many times, earning many accolades and victories, but also suffering tragic losses as well.
As a successor Chapter of Sanguinius, the Scarlet Shields suffering from the twin genetic flaws of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage. They have managed to gain a small measure of control over their genetic flaws by committing themselves to their honour and duty above all else.
Following their founding, the homeworld of the Scarlet Shields was attacked by a force of the Word Bearers, who attempted to steal a cache of their gene-seed. Whilst the Scarlet Shields managed to repel the Word Bearers, they suffered terrible losses. After rebuilding their numbers sufficiently, they launched a crusade of vengeance against the forces of Chaos. Accompanied by several of their cousin chapters of the Sanguinary Brotherhood, including the Blood Scythes, Blood Wings, Flesh Eaters, Red Mammoths, Crimson Bones, Red Seraphs, Cruor Blades, Crimson Angels, Blood Aurochs, and Red Tusks, they went to battle against the forces of Chaos.
This crusade, dubbed the Blood Crusade, at one point took the Scarlet Shields into the Eye of Terror. In this horrific realm, they launched a deadly assault against the homeworld of the Word Bearers, the daemon world of Sicarus. They suffered tragic losses in this assault, losing three quarters of their number before they were reinforced by their cousin chapter, the Crimson Angels. Following this battle, the Crimson Angels and the Scarlet Shields left the Eye of Terror. They joined the rest of their cousin chapters fighting against the forces of Chaos in realspace.
During the late 41st Millennium, the Scarlet Shields were prevented from coming to the aid of the Blood Angels when their homeworld was attacked by Hive Fleet Leviathan as their own homeworld, Skogoris IV, was attacked by a splinter fleet of Hive Fleet Kraken. Their numbers dropped to less than 200 Astartes following this campaign, and it is only with the introduction of the Primaris Space Marines that they have managed to rebuild their numbers.
Fearing their Chapter's traditions would be lost, the remaining Firstborn Astartes created the "Commandments of Fire." These commandments, written onto slabs of firestone - unique to Skogoris IV - are kept securely in the Chapter's Reclusiam. Each member of the Scarlet Shields is commanded to learn these commandments by heart before they can advance from the 10th Company.
