"From shadow we rise, to face void and flame, Where none dare to tread, we strike in His name. Through fire and darkness, the lost we reclaim, In glory returned, His light we proclaim."
— Prayer of Return, Resurrectionists Battle Prayer

The Resurrectionsts are a Loyalist Successor Chapter created from the lineage of the Raven Guard in the 23rd "Sentinel" Founding to recover some of the losses to the Imperium suffered in the 37th Millennium. As such, they have one clear purpose that supersedes all other concerns: the recovery of lost brothers, or their gene seeds, and relics.

Chapter History

The Light in the Darkness

After the events that resulted in the loss of at least 57 chapters, according to the Requiem Malesent of Saint Kybra, in the 37th Millennium, the High Lords of Terra realised that the scale of loss of the Emperor's genes was close to heresy. Vowing to never let any Space Marine Chapter disappear, they sanctioned the 23rd "Sentinel" Founding to replace the lost chapters. Of the chapters founded one was to have a specific purpose to find, recover or destroy lost chapters and bring their gene seeds back to Holy Terra; these were the Resurrectionists.

The High Lords of Terra decreed that to undertake this mission a successor of the Raven Guard, using the gene-seed of Corvus Corax, would be selected; A new breed of warriors thriving in darkness to master the most covert of missions, many of which would be struck from the records by the Adeptus Administratum.

As such, the Resurrectionists' purpose is to seek out and retrieve lost, or stranded, Space Marine Chapters and relics thought lost to the Imperium and return them for the Glory of the Emperor. Through this mission, both the Adeptus Mechanicus and High Lords of Terra hoped that by salvaging lost gene-seed and reuniting estranged Chapters, they could regain valuable assets for the Imperium.

Notable Campaigns

Deadmire Expanse (023.M38): Deep within the Death Guarded controlled Deadmire Expanse, the Veil Wardens detected the presence of an ancient, revered artifact, the Ashen Blade, once wielded by the Raven Guard hero Captain Aloni Tev before his death at the hand of Captain Typhon at Isstvan V. The Raven Guard, determined to reclaim a piece of their lost history, agreed to an alliance with the relatively untested successor Chapter, the Resurrectionists, due to their specialist knowledge of lost relic recovery. Differences in outlook, however, seeded the undoing of this alliance; whilst the Raven Guard desired to honour their legacy, the Resurrectionists deemed it a simple imperative to return the relic to the Emperor’s keeping.

During the initial assault in the plague-ridden swamps of Gallus Mire, the combined covert operations of the chapters seemingly worked to effectively neutralise the Death Guard defences; the Raven Guard, under Shadown Captain Thrax, crippled key defensive positions through covert strikes, whilst The Resurrectionists, comprising a strike force of the 1st and 4th companies led by their Warden Primus Erykon Vahl, targeted the reliquary. Unfortunately, something triggered the alarm with the Death Guard ranks, and the walls of the fortress seemed to come alive with diseased automata and entrenched plague marines. This resulted in the Resurrectionists being cut off from the Raven Guard deep within the complex.

In the resulting storm of darkness and decay, the Raven Guard moved as shadows, striking fast but struggling to gain momentum against the resilience of the plague marines. Ultimately, the battle outside the fortress became one of attrition, ill-suiting the Raven Guard style who looked like suffering a catastrophic loss. Meanwhile the Resurrectionists moved forward with calculated efficiency towards their goal. Suffering heavy losses of their own, the martial skill of Erykon Vahl and the abilities of their Veil Wardens forced a breach into the chamber holding the Ashen Blade.

As the battle descended into a cacophonous, desperate struggle and the Raven Guard force looked close to annihilation, the Resurrectionists emerged carrying the relic. At this definitive moment of battle, Warden Primus Erykon Vahl made a fateful decision that would seal his chapter’s reputation; he ordered an immediate withdrawal of his forces ignoring the distress calls of the Raven Guard, still engaged in brutal close combat fighting. His only response to the distress calls of Captain Thrax were: “You bleed for your brothers; we bleed for the Emperor. The Blade is returned, our duty is done.”

The battle cost the Raven Guard dearly, nearly two companies of brothers, their bodies lost within the filth choked marshes of Gallus Mire. Those who survived were forced to fight a bitter withdrawal, barely escaping extermination. Whilst the Blade was recovered, the cost of its retrieval destroyed trust between the two chapters. The Raven Guard saw the Resurrectionists as cold, untrustworthy and entirely self-serving, with Captain Thrax, one of the few survivors, vowing to never fight alongside them again. The Resurrectionists, however, did not care for the judgment of others. Their mission to recover what was lost was a success, therefore the sacrifice justified.

From that day forward, the Raven Guard claims no brotherhood towards their successor chapter, whilst grudgingly acknowledging the Resurrectionists’ effectiveness and ruthlessness in pursuing their aim.

Vikarus IV (856.M39): On Vikarus IV the 3rd Company, now having adopted the moniker of "The Jesters" after the change in behaviour from prolonged warp exposure and demonic battles, "liberated" the populous from Drukhari enslavement. Distress signals reached the Resurrectionists from the planet's surface that a Drukhari Kabal had landed with the aim of killing or enslaving the entire planet. Whilst this would normally have been dismissed as work beneath their purpose, Vikarus IV was home to a relic, buried under the surface. Further information revealed that the Drukhari force was known as the Kabal of the Tethered Blade, known for their elaborate executions and rigid rules of combat, so it seemed as if fate had decreed that this would be the first campaign of the newly reinstated 3rd company.

Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds most company Wardens would have carefully planned their assault. Warden Vale, now commanding the Jesters, began their engagement with a reckless abandon and chaotic tactics, if they could be called that, by scattering drop-pods throughout the locale of the relic. The Drukhari thought this a miscalculation; like cattle arriving at the slaughterhouse they would feast on the pain of these "angels".

Then the angels began to kill.

There was no pattern, no rhythm, to the Jesters onslaught. No sense of preservation or restraint. The Drukhari started to fall, not to superior skill, but to sheer, directionless ferocity. The 3rd company did not engage, they collided, and when they did, they did not relent. Cacophony consumed the communication channels - not from the Kabal, but from the Astartes themselves. Their vox-speakers shrieked overlapping battle-hymns, layered prayers twisted into discordant agony, a weapon of sound and madness that disorientated even the most hardened Drukhari.

Adopting an unpredictable, guerilla-style offensive across the increasingly ruined Imperial city, their relentless laughter echoed through the foggy streets. Their antics, including making eerie, distorted broadcasts to the enemy, sowed confusion, ultimately allowing them to reach their prize. At the heart of it all, they did not even seek battle. The civilians, the xenos, the city, the very world were cast aside to complete the objective. When asked to report on the events of the battle Warden Vale shrugged and replied "They sought a duel. We had no need of one."

Harrow’s Rift (496.M40): One of the defining moments of the Resurrectionists Chapter’s history, the resulting sacrifice of the entire 8th company shaped the chapter’s formations.

Chapter Organisation

The Resurrectionists adhere to the majority of the tenets enshrined in the Codex Astartes. Due to the nature of their mission, and general zealously, there are some minor deviations in ranks and titles, and the organisation of the 10th Company, combined with an unusually close relationship with the Biologis sect of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

The renaming of the ranks was a symbolic gesture at the Chapter’s founding to highlight the sacred mission to recover lost brothers and gene seeds; the Resurrectionists are there to protect the lost.

The highest position amongst the ranks of the Resurrectionists is that of the Prime Warden (Chapter Master), who is the undisputed commander of the Chapter. The Prime Warden is supported in the running of the Chapter by members of the Conclave, which consists of the Chapter’s most senior and specialised marines. Members of the Sanctum include the Soul Warden (Master of Sanctity), Veil Warden (Chief Librarian), Forge Warden (Master of the Forge), the Chapter Ancient and the Wardens (Captains) of the 1st and 10th companies.

Officer Ranks

  • Prime Warden (Chapter Master): The Prime Warden of the Resurrectionists is responsible for the governance and tactical mastering of the Chapter’s forces. Whilst he has complete autonomy over the Chapter, he rarely makes a decision that is not supported by the members of the Conclave.  Only the Prime Warden is privy to the communiques from Terra and the wider strategic importance of their missions.
  • Grand Warden – The second to the Prime Warden. Normally either the Warden (Captain) of the 1st or 10th Company.
  • Key Warden – Captain of the 1st Company. The Key Warden is tasked with the sacred duty of organising the guarding of the most precious, and dangerous, secrets of the Chapter contained within the Sanctum Obscurum. His role is to ensure that nothing gets in, or out, of the vault. He is also responsible for responding to requests for aid by the other Wardens. A member of the Conclave, the Key Warden’s role is of paramount importance to the chapter and this position is held by one of the Prime Warden’s most trusted brothers.
  • Shadow Warden – Captain of the 10th Company. In charge of the Scout company “The Shadowblades”, the Shadow Warden is also the Master of Recruits and responsible for the selection of neophytes. As such, this is one of the most important positions within the Chapter and the Shadow Warden is highly revered for his judgement and martial prowess by the entire Chapter, especially the Prime Warden. Referred to as Grand Shadow Warden if also chosen as the second in command, he is a member of the Conclave.
  • Warden – Captain. Wardens serve as the conduit of the Prime Warden’s commands and is responsible for the success of missions. As standard Space Marine Captains, Wardens lead a company of marines, and has other duties and specialities required for the running of the Chapter:
    • Master of the Vault - The title of Master of the Vault symbolises the combination of the Master of the Keep and Master of the Watch in standard Codex-compliant chapters. This position is reserved for the Key Warden, Warden of the veteran 1st company of marines, who is responsible for the safeguarding of the Sanctum Obscurum and the security of the Psychopomp and the multitude that reside within.
    • Master of the Arsenal – The Master of the Arsenal oversees the cache of weapons and munitions available to the Chapter. This vital duty is usually bestowed upon the Warden of the 2nd company.
    • Lord Executioner – The marine holding the title of Lord Executioner has demonstrated himself in single combat during the heat of many battles. The Lord Executioner of the Resurrectionists is currently the Warden of the 3rd company “The Jesters” due to the frequent demonstration of martial prowess in single combat against foes that would chill the blood of regular battle-brothers. Whilst, in theory, this title is free to move to the Warden with the greatest skill with a melee weapon, this is almost always the Warden of the 3rd company.
    • Master of the Marches – In charge of both his own company, and of overseeing the deployment of the chapter’s fighting forces, the Master of the Marches is a supreme tactician rivalled only by the Master of the Vault and The Prime Warden himself. He is usually Warden of the 4th company.
    • Master of Relics – As the Warden charged as the custodian of all relics, both from the Chapter and those recovered, the Warden of the 5th company has this honour. He, and his company, are experts in urban warfare, relishing in covert operations within the diverse range of built-up environments present within the galaxy. As he often comes into contact with Warp-tainted objects, the Master of Relics works closely with the Veil Warden and company Veil Sentinels to mitigate potential corruption.
    • Master of the Fleet – The captain deemed worthy of the title Master of the Fleet has demonstrated his tactical acumen for coordinating and executing combat in the darkness of the void. This title is normally given to the Warden of the 6th company.
    • Chief Victualler – Whilst a seemingly unglamorous position for a hardened Marine, the Chief Victualler is responsible for the maintenance of supply lines and the provision for all combatants and non-combatants aboard the Psychopomp and afield. This position is usually reserved for the Warden of the 7th Company.
    • Master of Rites – The Master of Rites is ultimately the keeper of the records for the Resurrectionists. This position has been held by the only surviving member of the 8th Company, Brother Taryn Kryne who is currently interned into a Brutalis Dreadnought. He is guardian of the Obsidian Memorlalis, which contains all of the Resurrectionist brothers who have fallen, kept in stasis until triggered. In the rare occasions, Brother Kryne is awoken, his vox-replicator spews forth the names of fallen brothers and the sacred duty he and his brothers a bound to. Despite bordering on madness, his words can rally his brothers in the direst of situations, and his battle rage, whilst not in keeping with the majority of the chapter, is highly effective at clearing the enemy.
    • Master of Sieges – The Master of Sieges is an expert in long-range fire support. Although this expertise is rarely used in a chapter that focuses on stealth, sometimes, in the pursuit of the mission, heavy fire support is required. He is particularly skilled in the destruction of fortresses to allow access to the rest of the Chapter. This position is held by the Warden of the 9th Company.
    • Master of Recruits - The title of Master of Recruits is reserved for the Shadow Warden, Warden of the 10th Company, The Shadowblades. This position is of particular importance for the Resurrectionists as, being a fleet based chapter, they rely on the expertise of the Master of Recruits to select aspirants from across the galaxy. They, along with the Soul and Veil Wardens, set the trials to find worthy neophytes.
  • Sentinel – Lieutenant
    • Master of Reconnaissance – This title is given to one of the three lieutenants in the 10th Company, The Shadowblades. Leader of the Vanguard squad of the 10th company, he has a natural aptitude for covert operations.
    • Master of the Signal – This title is given to one of the three lieutenants in the 10th Company, The Shadowblades. This marine leads the primary scout squats and is responsible for gaining information for the wider chapter.
    • Master of the Return - This title is given to one of the three lieutenants in the 10th Company, The Shadowblades. This title holds particularly poignancy for the Chapter and the lieutenant afforded this title is likely to achieve the status of Chapter Champion after their tenure. They are responsible for leading a squad of neophytes back into battle fields to recover fallen brothers, or their gene seeds, and items.
  • Keeper – Sergeant

Headquarters

Companies

Veteran company

The 1st company, as dictated in the Codex Astates, is comprised of veteran marines and is never seen in force. Their primary duty is on board the Psychopomp monastery as guards for the Sanctum Obscurum. Rather, squads (up to a maximum of 30 veteran brothers, leaving the majority to continue their sacred duty) are deployed, always in Terminator armour, at a time to support the other companies with missions that require additional support.

Battleline Companies

The Chapter consists of ten companies, as per the Codex Astartes. Due to the specifics of their mission, the 2nd, 4th and 5th battleline companies are deployed for the majority of missions, usually with a squad from the 1st (normally in Terminator armour) and a minimum of two squads from the 10th. Due to their mission of recovery and preservation, each company is accompanied by a larger number of Gene Keepers (Apothecaries), and in some cases a Genetor, and Veil Sentinels (Librarians). These specialist marines ensure the preservation and storage of the gene seeds or relics until they can be placed in the Sanctum Obscurum of the Psychopomp.

3rd Company: The Jesters

Company motto: “We laugh in the face of death.”

The 3rd company are deployed only for missions with the strongest Warp-taint, or in the direst circumstances, with a single squad of scouts. Due to their affliction, the other members of the Chapter view the 3rd company with a wary respect; impressed by their efficiency whilst keeping them at an arms’ length where possible.

The Jesters” name was given to those of the 3rd company who survived a prolonged period of within the warp emerging with some significant mental scarring. Originally, the 3rd company of the Resurrectionists were known for their expertise in covert, surgical strikes to obtain relics in the most heavily guarded of arenas of war. This came to an end where, during a routine mission to locate the remnants of a lost chapter in 806.M38 the entire company disappeared within the Warp whilst en route to their lost brethren’s last known location. They were mourned by their chapter and entered as martyrs in the Codex Phoenix.

After almost a century (by their own perception) in the shifting hellscapes of the Warp, the remnants 3rd company returned to the materium with mild psychological imbalances distinct to them, and enhancing those descended from their Primarch, that put them apart from their battle brothers in the Resurrectionists:

-           Gallows humour: Members of the 3rd company developed a habit of using humour to mock their own mortality and foes, particularly during the heat of battle. This trait earned them the monicker “The Jesters” and is a destabilising influence on those who may ally with the chapter.

-           Battle-grin: Members of the 3rd company love fighting. They are virtually impossible to coordinate into covert operations, choosing to destroy the enemy in furious, head-on combat. When they engage the enemy there have been reports of manic chackling coming over their vox-casters, leading many allies, including those in their own company, to shun them during battles. This leads to

-           Unpredictability: The prolonged exposure to the Warp’s chaotic influences, and endless demonic skirmishes, instilled a certain unpredictability in their combat style. This manifests as a combination of feints and audacious tactics, many bordering on reckless, to off balance the enemy. This reckless combat style ultimately made them a suitable bastion for those inflicted by the Ætherflame Touch.

Due to their battles in the Warp, they are experts in battling daemonic forces normally reserved for chaos incursions where genocide of the populus is a foregone conclusion.

Chapter Beliefs

From their founding, under the guiding fist of Warden Primus Erykon Vahl, the Resurrectionists believe their mission is more than mere retrieval, it is a spiritual mission to redeem and restore all the lost sons, and artifacts, of the Emperor’s light. As such, they view their duty to reclaim all that belongs to the Emperor as a sacred mission and hold reverence for the holy artefacts they reclaim.

Gene-Seed

As far as the official records are concerned, the Resurrectionists have the gene seed of the Primarch Corvus Corax. Due, however, to the emergence of distinct flaws, some within the Imperium have concluded that their gene seed is a hybrid with the White Scars; a blighted left over from the catastrophic experiments that doomed the brothers the Resurrectionists were tasked to recover. A fact fiercely contested by the Resurrectionists themselves.

Genetic Flaws

As expected, the Resurrectionists suffer from the flaws that inflict all of the Raven Guard successors. In particular, the Melanchomic Organ Deficiency have a peculiar response to exposure to the Warp; in some brothers any exposure to the Warp causes the skin to become bioluminescent, glowing hues of blue. In the most extreme cases, brothers appear to be on fire with blue flame. This appearance is often linked with increased aggression, the combination of which is used to great effect on the battlefield. This condition, referred to by the Gene Warden as the Ætherflame Touch, significantly increases the Accelerated Organ Degradation flaw causing the Marines to require constant surveillance and treatment aboard the Psychopomp.

Ætherflame Touch

Marines afflicted with the Ætherflame Touch are rare amongst the brethren of the Resurrectionists. These “touched” marines are held in reverence by the Chapter, as symbols of the sacrifice the chapter makes when recovering the lost glories of the Emperor, as a phoenix rises from the ashes of a fire. They are also separated from the standard troops during deployment and comprise the 3rd company, otherwise known as “The Jesters”, due to obvious issues with conducting covert, nighttime, operations and their bouts of hyper-agression.

Whilst the effects of the gene seed flaw manifest differently for each marine, all Ætherflame marines experience four stages of severity:

  • Stage 1 (The Azure Kiss): The Battle-brother’s blood turns to a blue bioluminescence, which are particularly pronounced on the lips, eyes, ears, and scars turning them a shade of blue. Whilst the marine suffers no ill effects from this, it represents the beginning of the inevitable. Here, the brother will have checks by the Gene Warden and Veil Warden for signs of chaos intrusion, once cleared, the marine returns to their company and preparations are made for their transfer to The Jesters.
  • Stage 2 (The Veil’s Mark): As the bioluminescence spreads, the marines’ veins are visible underneath their skin, and due to the reduction in pigment, their whole presence takes on an eerie cerulean hue. At this stage the marine is subject to a faint burning sensation in their blood and a sense of detachment from reality. In periods of stress or combat untamable anger and aggression is accompanied by flashes of flame-like light flickering across their bodies. At this stage, marines are transferred to the ranks of The Jesters and assigned to the increasingly desperate missions. Most afflicted marines do not progress beyond this stage.
  • Stage 3 (The Kindling): At this stage combat becomes synonymous with marines’ bodies becoming wreathed in uncontrollable blue flame. Whilst these flames are harmless to the marine, they are a terrifying sight on the battlefield and causes their armour to become marked by flame motifs and scorch marks. During these states, the marines are bearable controllable and their aggression on the battlefield is matched only by the fear they induce in all who witness them. Small in number, these marines make up one of the Vanguard squads within the 3rd company and are under the constant watch by The Jester’s own Veil Sentinel who reports regularly to the Veil Warden. This stage is but a stepping stone to the final apex stage.
  • Stage 4 (The Ætherflame): For those marines that enter Stage 3, the fire that consumes them in combat slowly manifests whilst undergoing daily life and can only be ceased by entering the marine’s body in stasis. Once awakened, the marines are dropped into the combat arena their voices carry a resonant, unnatural echo, and bodies consumed by fire with flames leaping from their eyes, mouth and armour. In extremely rare cases, the flames appear to take on the visage of corvid wings, giving the marine the appearance of an avenging angel. At this stage the marine is largely reduced to a mindless berserker, driven by an overwhelming urge to destroy, displaying impressive resilience to damage, but at the cost of their mind. These troops are the last resort and, in the rare cases they have been deployed, allowed the recovery of artefacts, and their brothers, from battles all but lost. As such, the marines are expected to perish on the battlefield, either from injury or the rapid onset organ decay that accompanies this stage. Those who do not, meet the Emperor’s mercy at the hands of the Gene Warden. There is, however, a single exception; Keeper of Souls Valerius Morthern a.k.a. The Laughing Shadow is the only known marine to retain their sanity and active service.

Combat Doctrine

"A shadow may obscure the light, but it cannot destroy it. In the Emporer’s name, we cast off the veil and bring His children home."
— First Warden Primus of the Resurrectionists Erykon Vahl’s opening in the Codex Pheonix

Such as their Raven Guard heritage, the Resurrectionists are experts in silent strikes, preferring precision attacks and sabotage over direct, all-out warfare.

Whilst on missions there is no higher purpose than the success or retrieval of the target, be it lost brothers, gene seeds, or relics. As such, they are a single-minded Chapter, willing to forsake everything to achieve their mission. Allies of this Chapter are few and far between as, coupled with their highly secretive nature, they routinely ignore the screams of others if they are deemed surplus to requirements. They have also been known to leave in the heat of battle once their objectives have been met. Their duty it to the lost and forgotten, theirs is not to interfere with others' battles. Unless, that is, they are in possession of an artefact in which case the Resurrectionists have been known to take the relic with them, having already calculated the demise of the combatants.

Notable Space Marines

"We are the guardians of the lost. In our hands lies the flame that will show them the way home."
— Warden Primus Thalrian Khost acknowledging the maturation of new battle brothers.
  • Warden Primus Thalrian Khost – The current Warden Primus (Chapter Master) of the Resurrectionists.  Under Warden Primus Khost, the Resurrectionists have become one of the most valuable secrets within the Imperium. After the opening of the Great Rift, Khost’s unique blend of spiritual insight and tactical acumen made him a respected leader to those other Chapters aware of the Resurrectionists’ existence. Where most see them as solemn, duty-bound warriors, Khost has instilled a quietly burning purpose within his marines, that they carry with them into the most hostile of recovery missions. Khost holds a profound respect for the Emperor viewing his mission as sacred; he is known to invoke the Litany of the Forgotten in private
  • Warden Primus Erykon Vahl – The original Warden Primus of the Resurrectionists (KIA) was a warrior of great skill, whilst also being a philosopher of duty and redemption. As a Battle-Brother, Vahl became a distinguished Lieutenant of the Raven Guard 5th company, until during a mission his company’s command squat was annihilated. Vahl took command of the remainder of the strike force and managed to retrieve the target – twin power swords referred to as the Talons of the Emperor – despite suffering the loss of all but a handful of marines. Upon the return to Deliverance, the marines who survived with Vahl spoke of the desperate battle to return to the evacuating Storm Raven, whereby Vahl wielded the swords that appeared to burst into flame as he struck down enemies.  These blades became the symbol of his great honour being chosen as the founding Warden Primus for the Resurrectionists, and has passed to his successors. Vahl spoke only when necessary, but when he did he spoke with an intense passion and was known for his unyielding resolve and ability to inspire both fear and loyalty in his brothers. His demeanour earned him the moniker “The Shadow’s Aegis”. He was ultimately martyred during a mission to return the Tempulus Obscurum from a planet infested with a demonic hoard of Tzeentch; his body was never recovered, but his blades were.
  • Warden Corian Vale: Warden Vale a.k.a. “The Smiling Reaper” of the 3rd Company “The Jesters” is also the current Lord Executioner for the Resurrectionists.
  • Void Warden Tyros Marr: As Warden of the 6th Company, Tyros lead his company during their final battle at Harrow’s Rift. He earned the title Void Warden posthumously due to sacrifice made by Tyros within the Web-way, symbolising his eternal watch within the warp.
  • Shadow Warden Aric Thane: Shadow Warden Thane is the current Warden of the 10th Company The Shadowblades.
  • Keeper of Souls Valerius Morthern – Keeper of Souls Valerius Morthern a.k.a. The Laughing Shadow is the Company Chaplain for the 3rd Company known as The Jesters. He is the only known marine to retain their sanity at the final stage of the Ætherflame Touch, but their zeal for their mission, and the Emperor, has increased further. Morthern is kept in stasis, for the safety of both himself, and the crew of the Psychopomp, but released when the 3rd company is deployed. His appearance is horrific; a flaming skull in charred power armour, screaming rhetoric to inspire his company and terrify his foes, and wielding his relic crozius through the densest of enemies.
  • Brother Taryn Kryne – Brother Kryne is the sole survivor from the heroic last stand of the 8th Company at Harrow’s Rift. His body was recovered days after the battle by a recovery force, as the only brother left with signs of life. Despite his rescue, Kryne’s injuries were too severe for standard medical intervention, so the Gene Warden interred him within a Brutalis Dreadnought sarcophagus. Despite his survival he refused to allow the 8th company to be reformed, a wish that was granted by the Warden Primus in recognition of their sacrifice, believing himself its sole custodian, and living reminder, of the sworn duty of the Resurrectionists. He took on the symbolic title of Master of Rites and guardian of the Obsidian Memoralis, the vault containing the names of the fallen brothers. He has a vast knowledge of the Chapter and its history and, although his memory is corrupting, delivers this in monologues, sometimes lasting days, to the new recruits.
