The Purge Marines are an elusive and paranoid Chapter of (seemingly loyal) Space Marines created during an Unknown Founding and from uncertain lineage. They are noted for the fact that the Imperium has an astounding lack of information on the Chapter. It is for this reason the wider Imperium remains suspicious of this Chapter. This feeling of suspicion appears to be mutual as the Purge Marines seem to see everyone as a potential Heretic waiting to reveal their treasonous nature. This mutual suspicion has lead to numerous inter-Imperial conflicts. For millennia, the Inquisition has tried time and again to declare this elusive Chapter Excommunicate Traitoris, but constantly fail to attain enough solid evidence for their case. Unable to declare them Renegade, the Inquisition petitioned the High Lords of Terra to send the Purge Marines into the distant regions of the known Galaxy, far away from other Imperial forces.

It is suspected that the Chapter's battle doctrine is incredibly violent, viewing the butchering of their enemies as the highest form of religious worship. When Imperial forces arrive at a battle site supposedly visited by the Purge Marines, all they find is crippled and scorched architecture along with the mutilated and unrecognizable corpses of their enemies.

The Purge Marines display an odd fixation with death and appear to be obsessed with memento mori - artistic or symbolic reminders of the inevitability of death. Even the Chapter's Flagship/Fortress Monastery bears the name Memento Mori. Another interest of the Chapter includes symbols and reminders of 'ill-luck'.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colours

The Purge Marines primarily wear almost entirely black coloured battle-plate with dark grey shoulder pauldron trim. Despite their mysterious origins and strange mortuary practices, the Purge Marines appear to be nominally Codex-compliant, as they display white colour Codex-approved squad specialist markings on their right shoulder inset. These symbols indicates a battle-brother's assigned squad specialty (Fire Support, Close Support, Battleline, Veteran or Command). A small white coloured roman numeral located on the right armorial inset, indicates a battle-brother's assigned squad. A larger white coloured roman numeral stenciled upon the left poleyn (knee guard) indicates a battle-brother's assigned company. Keeping with Chapter traditions, a Purge Marines' armour displays numerous symbols of death such as skulls and bones. Some battle-brothers' armour displays esoteric runes whose meanings are unknown to those outside of the Chapter.

Chapter Badge

The Purge Marines' Chapter icon is a large stylised white coloured raven head facing towards the enemy.
