The Pillars of Jeza are a loyalist, Codex-compliant Space Marine Successor Chapter of the Ultramarines. For over a thousand years, they have guarded the Keystone Nexus, a vital astropathic relay within the Segmentum Pacificus. With the galaxy torn asunder by the Great Rift, the Pillars have learned to divine hazy portents from the maddening swirls of their gas giant homeworld of Jeza, a practice that is as divisive within their own ranks as it is suspect to the watchful eyes of the Inquisition.
Chapter History[]
The Chapter was raised in 600.M40 as part of the 25th 'Bastion' Founding, a galaxy-wide effort to fortify crucial Imperial assets. They were assigned to the Jeza system in the galactic west, a region notoriously plagued by xenos incursions. The system is home to the Keystone Nexus, a potent astropathic relay hub between Hydraphur and Terra. There, the Chapter fought a series of brutal campaigns against the aliens, developing a preference for methodical, defensive warfare.
Following the birth of the Cicatrix Maledictum in 999.M41, the Pillars found themselves cut off from the Imperium and isolated in the Blackness. Jeza had violently changed and its moons quickly became a target for opportunistic Chaos warbands who relentlessly bled the Chapter's strength. As the traitors had found a way to bypass the Pillar's augur arrays and mask their approach, Chief Librarian Avasar sought a new method to divine incoming threats.
After solar weeks of research, he claimed that within the seemingly random swirls of Jeza, he had discovered subtle patterns that could be read and interpreted, and by doing so, he had seen the return of a great lord and the arrival of his vengeful fleet. However, Chapter Master Akritus dismissed Avasar's findings as an absurdity and forbade his research, fearing it would only spread false hope within the Pillars' battered ranks.
For months, the Chief Librarian's work remained a forbidden topic. Everything changed with the arrival of Primaris reinforcements of the Indomitus Crusade, who had fought their way through the Segmentum as part of Fleet Tertius and brought tidings of Guilliman's return. With Avasar's theory proven true, his research was reinstated, and the Collegia Prognostica was founded, an order within the Librarius dedicated to the documentation, observation and interpretation of Jeza's atmosphere, a new discipline of divination that would later become known as nebular exegesis.
Following the gradual waning of the Blackness, the Keystone Nexus serves as an astropathic relay once more. With their numbers recovering, the Pillars stand ready to defend it, albeit under the intensifying scrutiny of the Inquisition, who view their unsanctioned means of divination as a potential gateway to damnation, and the Nexus itself as a catastrophic risk should it ever be compromised.

Chapter Home World[]
The Pillars' homeworld is the colossal gas giant Jeza. While such planets are often harvested for their exotic gases, the world was deemed unsuitable for commercial exploitation due to its psy-resonant properties, a phenomenon theorized to be caused by
REDACTED
The anomaly, however, occasionally amplifies psychic frequencies, making Jeza a priceless asset for astrotelepathic communication. To harness this power, a massive void bastion was constructed in close orbit, hosting one of the most potent astropathic choirs in the Segmentum Pacificus and serving as the Pillars' fortress-monastery.
The Keystone[]
The Keystone is a gigantic, concentric bastion that closely orbits Jeza. It is armed with world-shattering macrocannons and an intricate system of augur arrays tuned to detect warp anomalies. The bastion's radial design centers on the Keystone Nexus, a heavily shielded astropathic spire. The Nexus essentially acts as a fortress within a fortress and is perpetually guarded by the Chapter's most elite Veterans, as Jeza’s anomaly makes the choir more prone to the dangers of the Immaterium, and an unchecked daemonic breach in a relay of this potency would spell doom for the hundreds, if not thousands of systems that receive its messages.
Beyond its grim function as a bastion, the Keystone is also a place of unexpected beauty and respite, with carefully curated gardens, ornate bath-halls, and stunning corridors lined with statues of past heroes, hewn by the hands of battle-brothers. Thus, the Pillars fight not only to fulfill their duty to the Imperium, but to defend the sanctuary they call home.
Moons of Jeza[]
While Jeza itself is uninhabitable, it is orbited by numerous moons. The largest of them are collectively known as the 'Three Sisters', and are home to the majority of the system's population:
| Name | Category | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carnassia | Hive World | Carnassia is the oldest and most prestigious human settlement of Jeza's moons, notable for its mountain-carved hives. The ancient city of Jezareth serves as the de-facto capital of the system. Life for most of Carnassia's citizens is tolerable by Imperial standards, unless one is condemned to the moon's quarries or underhives. |
| Stannica | Industrial World | Stannica's toxic surface is dedicated to mining operations that supply its orbital docks and shipyards, which specialize in refining local ores into voidship plating. The moon occasionally provides maintenance services to Imperial Navy and Chapter assets. |
| Levithica | Agri-World | Levithica's subterranean agri-complexes feed Jeza's lunar realm, with the world's population dwelling deep beneath the surface to escape an extreme diurnal cycle. Geothermal activity has created a culture centered on hot springs and a reverence for St. Nestan, the 'Bathing Saint', whose rituals of purification and restoration have been adopted by the Pillars themselves. |

Nexian Guard[]
The Nexian Guard is an elite contingent of Terminator Veterans tasked to defend the relay from any physical assault, and to purge any corruption that manifests from within. To be selected for this position, each brother must possess not only decades of combat experience, but must also have proven his absolute purity to the Master of Sanctity who personally interrogates every canditate. Beyond their vigil, the Nexian Guard serve as the Chapter Master's primary advisors on all matters concerning the relay's security. Command of the Guard is traditionally reserved for the Chapter's 1st Company Captain who bears the title 'Praetor of the Nexus'.
Collegia Prognostica[]
As part of the Librarius, members of the Collegia Prognostica observe, document and interpret the anomalous atmospheric phenomena of Jeza, with the explicit aim to predict and identify direct threats to the astropathic relay. To achieve this, they maintain several satellite stations with pict-recording capabilities in orbit, transmitting detailed atmospheric data directly to the Grand Observatorium of the fortress-monastery, where a dedicated conclave of Lexicani and Lexmechanics collate the data, before subjecting it to the analytic work of the Chief Librarian and his peers. The results are debated until a consensus interpretation is forged and presented to Chapter Command. The Collegia and their practice of nebular exegesis have many times over proven their worth, allowing the Pillars to intercept direct threats long before they would reach the system. However, there is an inherent and unpredictable margin of error to the process, which fuels the controversy around it.

Combat Doctrine[]
- "Victory is measured in blood per shell."
- —Pillars of Jeza proverb
The Pillars of Jeza adhere to the tactical tenets of the Codex Astartes, with a marked preference for defensive warfare, employing disciplined firing lines to annihilate large groups of foes at once. Their doctrine has evolved naturally over centuries of repelling traitors and grinding down xenos hordes in brutal, set-piece battles. There is no greater comfort to a Pillar than the reassuring heft of thick warplate and the familiar, thunderous kick of a Heavy Bolter, be it while holding a deadly chokepoint in the bowels of a ship or standing shoulder-to-shoulder in the carnage of a full-scale battlefield.
As a result of this preference, Heavy Intercessor Squads make up the bulk of the Chapter's battleline, though other squad types are still maintained as the Codex mandates. This makes the Pillars effective against foes who rely on massed infantry assaults and brute force, such as the Orks, but can make engaging highly mobile or elusive enemies like the Drukhari challenging.
Chapter Armoury[]
The Pillars maintain a formidable arsenal. Most notably, they possess an impressive amount of portable defense platforms such as Firestrike Servo-turrets, Thunderfire Cannons, and Rapier Armoured Carriers. Additionally, their logistical ties to the Adeptus Astra Telepathica have granted them access to specialized, non-standard equipment, including warp-tuned sensor devices and hexagrammatic wards to defend the Keystone Nexus from daemonic threats. In contrast, their rapid assault elements are limited, possessing only few fast attack vehicles like Land Speeders and Assault Bikes.
Chapter Culture & Beliefs[]
Chapter Cult[]
The Pillars do not worship the Emperor as a god, but instead revere him as the 'Architect', the master builder of the Imperium whose edifice they are sworn to uphold. They believe that the Chapter is one of the many pillars supporting the Architect's great design, and their specific duty is to ensure their section, namely the Nexus, never crumbles.
They recognize Roboute Guilliman as their gene-father and the living heir to the Architect's genius, which was made manifest in the Codex Astartes. Despite their reverence for the primarch, the Pillars maintain no active ties to their parent Chapter, as the immense distance to Ultramar and their duty to the relay makes regular communication and cooperation logistically unfeasible.
The Pillars live by three tenets that serve as their motto and battle cry: 'Stand ready, stand fast, stand tall'.
- To stand ready is to always remain vigilant and reject complacency in all its forms, a tenet that forbids warriors from ever believing their assigned perimeter is secure or training complete. Sergeants of the Pillars are notorious for drilling their squads long after other Chapters would declare them ready, and every brother, regardless of his tenure, is expected to regulary attend cogitator-assisted combat simulations to identify and address any potential weaknesses.
- To stand fast is to be physically and mentally unyielding against any threat, be it from without or within. This means a battle-brother will defend his post until he is physically annihilated or explicitly ordered to give ground. It also demands that every brother steel his mind as he does his body, as emotional compromise is the first breach a cunning enemy will seek to exploit.
- To stand tall is to understand that one's conduct, bearing and appearance are weapons in their own right. A Pillar must learn to exploit his presence to the fullest, be it to manage mortals through inspiration or intimidation, or to daunt their foes through displaying an indomitable posture. For the Chapter's Artificers, this means a lifetime spent polishing and repainting scarred ceramite, as their lords value presentation.
Internal Discord[]
Nebular exegesis, the divination of portents from the chaotic patterns of Jeza’s atmosphere, has evolved into a revered discipline, with many Pillars now regarding the planet as a sacred interface with the Architect. Consequently, the Collegia’s influence over Chapter Command has grown substantially, with their interpretations now contributing to major strategic decisions, from fleet deployments to resource allocation. This has led the Pillars to undertake pre-emptive campaigns far beyond their designated locus, acting on portents that identify nascent threats to Jeza. However, some of those distant campaigns have proven to be costly diversions.
The unreliable nature of nebular exegesis has increasingly fueled tensions within the Chapter, with some Pillars viewing the Collegia's influence with deep suspicion, arguing that it undermines the pure, time-proven strategies of the Codex Astartes. They are opposed by those who believe that rejecting this tool would be a betrayal to the Chapter's foundational duty, asserting that mindlessly clinging to the Codex makes their strategies predictable and blinds them to the threats revealed by the Architect himself. This schism represents the greatest internal challenge the Pillars of Jeza have faced since their founding, and the ultimate outcome of this ideological struggle is far from certain.
Notable Members[]
| Rank | Name | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chapter Master | Akritus | As a Deathwatch Veteran and former Lord Executioner of the 8th Company, Akritus is a peerless xenos-slayer and a pragmatist to his core, who will employ any tool to erradicate his foes, be it Codex tactics or Collegia portents. But for all his expertise in xenocide, he is not a diplomat. His inability to decisively resolve the growing schism within his Chapter has left the Pillars dangerously divided, and though his deeds command respect, whispers of doubt have begun to spread among his Captains. However, none would dare to openly challenge him, as Akritus' fury in battle is legendary, and few wish to test whether that wrath extends to his own brothers. | |
| Captain | Valikar | Valikar commands the 1st Company and is known both for his strict adherance to the Codex and his vocal disapproval of the Collegia's divination practices. As one of the most senior and respected commanders, Valikar is a fierce proponent of the Pillars' fundamental doctrine, a conviction that has made him the de-facto leader of the traditionalist, Codex-driven faction within the Chapter. While his status as Praetor of the Nexus grants his word immense weight, some perceive his views as dangerously rigid, arguing that his reverence for the past prevents him from adapting to the future. | |
| Chief Librarian | Avasar | As head of the Librarius and the Collegia Prognostica, Avasar possesses a brilliant, analytical mind that is formidable even by the enhanced standards of the Astartes, allowing him to perceive Jeza's atmospheric patterns as data to be deciphered and utilized. He argues that the Codex is a masterpiece of tactical science, but it is ultimately based on the predictable laws of a material universe, making it suboptimal for threats that defy conventional logic. Many of his brothers, however, remain unconvinced. They believe his methods introduce an unacceptable element of chance, gambling the Chapter's limited resources on cryptic portents rather than the proven doctrines that have safeguarded Jeza for more than a millennium. |
Chapter Recruitment[]
The Pillars of Jeza draw the bulk of their recruits from all strata of Carnassia's hives. The most successful candidates consistently emerge from the mid-levels, as underhivers are often genetically incompatible with the Chapter's gene-seed, and the highborn tend to lack the physical and mental resilience to survive the selection process.
Additionally, a small number of recruits is extracted from the orbital docks of moon Stannica, whose youths possess an innate understanding of technology, making them promising canditates for eventual Techmarine induction.
Finally, Levithica fulfills its duty to the Chapter by providing a steady stream of serfs. Generations of exposure to potent agri-toxins have rendered its sons anatomically unsuitable for ascension.
Following their selection, aspirants are taken to the vast training decks of the Keystone, where their alertness and composure are harshly monitored and tested. Those who prove sufficiently aware and disciplined are then sent to the dark training facilities on Jeza's lesser moons, where they undergo grueling physical and mental conditioning to prepare them for what is to come.
Rite of the Monolith[]
To earn the right to receive the sacred gene-seed, the remaining aspirants are taken to the surface of Levithica, where they are exposed to its brutal diurnal cycle. Each is given a heavy, unworked stone into which their mortal name is carved. The task is deceptively simple: carry this burden to the Shrine of the Monolith.
The trial is a relentless war against an unforgiving environment. For weeks, the aspirants must trek through the killing heat of the day, find shelter from the deadly cold of the night, and press on as the cycle repeats, all without abandoning or losing their personal monolith. Successful aspirants present their stone burden to the Chaplain, who then shatters it upon the Shrine's altar, anoints them with its dust, and bestows their new names, marking them as neophytes should they survive implantation.
Chapter Gene-Seed[]
The Pillars inherit the gene-seed of the Ultramarines, which remains notably stable and pure. A protective adaptation of the Melanochrome in response to Jeza's anomalous radiation gradually forms a golden limbal ring around the Pillars' irises. The radiance of this ring intensifies with age and is a mark of Veteran status.
Deathwatch Service[]
Due to their history of battling xenos incursions, the Pillars have a deep-seated hatred of aliens. To them, secondment to the Deathwatch is a logical step, viewing it as an opportunity to gather intelligence on more exotic threats that might one day set their sights on the system. With the shadow of the Great Devourer lengthening across the Segmentum, Chapter Master Akritus has significantly increased the number of secondments, determined to prepare his men for the coming threat.
Chapter Fleet[]
As of the Era Indomitus, the Pillars' fleet is led by a single, venerable Battle Barge, the Aegis Omnipotent, which is supported by four Strike Cruisers, each assigned to a Battle Company, 2nd through 5th, and a considerable flotilla of approximately forty Frigates and Destroyers distributed across all companies. Known vessels include:
- Aegis Omnipotent (Battle Barge) - Chapter / 1st Company flagship
- Pride of Jeza (Strike Cruiser) - 2nd Company flagship
- Maurikar's Fist (Strike Cruiser) - 4th Company flagship
Chapter Relics[]
- Mercy's End - Master-crafted, twin-linked Heavy Bolter, retrofitted for a single marine in Artificer or Terminator warplate. The Chapter's tech-adepts have confirmed that the weapon's machine spirit once served in a Land Raider of the Aurora Chapter, though how it came into the Pillars' possession is unclear. Its current bearer is Brother Porphyrius of the Nexian Guard, the only Pillar capable of handling its vicious recoil without compromising its accuracy.
- Cranium of the Bathing Saint - Ornate servo-skull fashioned from the remains of St. Nestan of Levithica. Though usually enshrined within the Reclusiam, the relic is known to occasionally wander the endless corridors of the Keystone. To encounter it on its rare strolls is considered good fortune.
- Banner of Jeza - Sacred battle standard of the Pillars. It is currently borne by Chapter Ancient Epirus, a venerated warrior and sculptor.
Chapter Appearance[]
- "I stand tall in ivory, that they may see the purity they will never know. In indigo, the storm they can never weather. In gold, the light they are forever denied."
- —Venerable Nivius
Chapter Colors[]
The Pillars bear the colors of their homeworld, ivory and purple, arranged in a halved pattern, with golden trim.
A gold-outlined, purple symbol on the right pauldron indicates the tactical role. A white Low Gothic numeral in the center of it reveals the squad number. A white Low Gothic numeral on the left poleyn denotes the company assignment.
Specialists -- Techmarines, Chaplains, Apothecaries, Librarians -- dye their armor in accordance with the Codex Astartes. Techmarines are clad in red, Chaplains in black, Apothecaries in white, and Librarians in blue. All specialists retain their purple, left pauldron which displays the Chapter Badge.
