This article, Night Wolves, is currently under active construction. The author, Emperor Michael, apologizes for the inconvenience. |
The Night Wolves, more accurately the Vilka Natt, are a newly incepted Chapter comprised entirely of Primaris Space Marines created during the Ultima Founding and successors of the venerable Space Wolves. Renowned for both their brutality and boastful nature, the Night Wolves are perhaps the most amiable to outsiders of any of Russ' Sons.
+++Chapter History+++
The greatest accolades of the Chapter can be found within the counter-attack upon the arch-traitors at the Trojus System in the extreme north of the Segmentum Solar. The catastrophic creation of the Great Rift caused many relatively safe systems to find themselves suddenly on the front lines of the eternal war, amongst them the previously unknown industrial system centered on the twin worlds of Krai and Mafrikan, one and industrial Hive World with a population approaching eighteen billion, the other a key Forge World essential to maintaining the Imperial material. As the sky itself was rend asunder and all the traitors of hell spewed forth, a multitude of chaotic warbands associated primarily with the Black Legion, Thousand Sons, and World Eaters traitor Legions launched an assault upon the Imperial system. Desperate for reinforcements to stop the universal bleeding across the Imperium, the reborn Robute Gulliman assigned one of his newly founded Primaris Chapters, which would soon become the Night Wolves, to relive the besieged system, in effect ordering them to liberate their new Homeworld. Eager as they were to enter into conflict, the Night Wolves were more than happy to oblige.

+++Chapter Homeworld+++
The Trojus System is a heavily fortified binary star system, featuring an industrialised Imperial Hive World and Mechanicus Forge World, amongst many, many other Imperial assets. Arguably the most important of these is an arctic Death World with no native population: Rikgard, homeworld of the Night Wolves. The planet is completely frozen on both it’s northern and southern hemispheres, but does have a frigid liquid ocean running along its tropical belt, with jagged fjords along the coasts. The interior of the planet’s icy continents are punctuated by massive rocky mountain ranges and volcanoes. Also notable is an apparent unrecorded contact with Fenris before the coming of the Imperium, as many examples of Fenrisian mega-fauna can be found there, including a variant of the legendary Fenrisian Wolf. The planet has a low-eccentricity orbit and a weak magnetic field, resulting in frequent, planet-spanning auroras.
++Fortress-Monastery++
While the Chapter is primarily fleet-based, they maintain a small facility for training new recruits. Ungr-Aett, or the Pup's Den, sits in a jagged mountain range on the northern pole of Rikgard. Due to peculiarities in the planet’s axial tilt and orbital period, this pole is bathed in near perpetual night, only seeing a dim twilight for a few weeks at a time. Although considered a grand edifice of towering spires and impregnable ramparts by the standards of most mortals in the Imperium, it is in fact a relatively small and spartan facility by the standards of Space Marines. Annexes and chambers are provided for the usual Chapter services, such as a Librarius and forge, however the majority of the structure is given over to training rooms and barracks for the recruits, which are drawn from the more populous inner planets of the system. These recruits are put through the rigorous training and rites necessary to become Night Wolves culminating in the Trial of Then-thousand Tears: in which the trainees are drink from a ritual chalice containing a noxious concoction before being transported to random locations across the planet with naught but a combat knife and a loincloth. After several hours, the brew will take hold, activating the Canis Helix inherit in their Gene-Seed and transforming them into the Wulfin, a Beasteal monster which craves nothing but blood. They must either overcome the curse of their brotherhood, and then navigate their way back to the Den across an unforgiving frozen wasteland filled with monstrous beasts, or be cursed to forever women that wasteland as beasts themselves, hunting future aspirants who take the trial.
+++Organization+++
The Chapter is divided into twelve Great Clans, the equivalent to Companies in other Chapters, which in turn are subdivided into a variable number of specialized Squads called Packs. Eleven of these Great Clans are led by Jarls while the twelfth is led by the Einherjarl himself. Each Great Clan is an entirely self sufficient army, with all the vehicles and wargear necessary to independently prosecute the enemies of Mankind, and is stationed aboard it’s own Strike Cruiser, which serves as the flagship for a corresponding Strike Fleet. In turn, the Einherjarl's larger Strike Fleet is centered on the Chapter's sole Battle Barge, Skidbladnir. This assignment scheme allows for flexible and rapid deployment to any battle zone across the Imperium. Jarls are given a great deal of organizational freedom with regards to the assignment of personnel and wargear within their own Great Clan.
It needs to be noted that there is no dedicated unit of Wulfen within the Chapter, and as the Chapter is often deployed far from Rikgard, the logistical undertaking of Wolf Priests to transport these Marines back home is often impossible. Usually they must undertake the grim duty of delivering the Emperor's Peace unto their cursed brothers.
++Officer Ranks++
- Einherjarl - The Einherjarl is the equivalent of Chapter Master in other Marine Chapters. They are voted into office by an assembly of the other Jarls upon the death or incapacitation of the previous Einherjarl, and will remain in office for life. They command one of the twelve Great Clans.
- Jarl - Jarls are the equivalent of Captain, and each command one of the twelve Great Clans. They are appointed to office upon the death or incapacitation of the prior Jarl from amongst theThanes (Lieutenants) or the Khjarls and Huskjarls (Sergeants and veteran Sergeants) of the Clan.
- Thane - Thanes are the Lieutenants of the Great Clan. They serve as assistants and second-in-command to their respective Jarl (Captain). They often provide flexibility to the Great Clan when it is divided into “Lesser Clans” (Battle Demi-Companies) when the tactical situation calls for forces to be spread amongst multiple combat zones, or even take informal command of allied non-Astartes units when deemed necessary.
++Specialist Ranks++
- War-Skald - As inheritors of the Space Wolves' doctrines, the Night Wolves do not utilize Librarians as other Chapters do. Instead, they utilize potent psykers who utilize shamanistic, runic traditions originating from the tribes of Fenris. Night Wolves are more ready to admit the inherent psychic nature of these warriors, they otherwise fulfill the same roles as Rune Priests in other Chapters descended from the Wolf King: from potent battle psykers to the keepers of the Chapter's lore and traditions.
- Ulfsark - A combination of Chaplin and Apothecary, these wolf priests are responsible for the psychic, physical, and spiritual health of their fellow Wolf-Brothers. They are also responsible for the capture, containment, transport, and most often euthanasia of those Marines who have succumbed to the Curse of the Wulfen.
- Iron Priest - Marines who have been specially trained by, and indeed themselves become, priests of the Omnissiah. These Techmarines are usually trained on the Forge World of Mafrikan, closer to the Night Wolves nominal homeworld of Rikgard.
- Huskhjarl - Veteran Sergeants in other Chapters, these experienced Marines have seen years upon years of only war, and are well versed in commanding superhumans in combat. These units are uniquely trained in the usage of the Chapter’s very limited supply of Terminator Armor.
- Husdrengir - Veteran Marines, these warriors have proven themselves above and beyond their Wolf-Brothers. They may be deployed as a guard (vaerangi) for the Jarl or a specialist officer, or may be deployed as an independent formation. The usage of the Chapter’s very limited supply of Terminator Armor is the exclusive purview of these elite units.
++Line Ranks++
- Khjarl - Sergeant in other Chapters, they lead Packs (Squads) of Marines. Like their Space Wolf progenitors, these Packs are trained and deployed together as a unit, and will almost never be reinforced or amalgamated throughout its existence.
- Drengir - Also called Wolf-Brothers (Vilka-Brodir), they are the standard Marines of the Chapter.
- Unger - Literally “pup” or “cub,” are the equivalents of Aspirants and Neophytes.
++Wolf Packs++
Like their genetic progenitors, a Night Wolf Pack is a tightly knit group of Marines who have lived and trained and made war together since their earliest days within the Chapter. As the Pack members age together, their inclinations and specializations change as they come to terms with their inner wolf. These ages can be seen as three groups: Red Claws, Black Manes, and Long Fangs:
- Red Claws - Newly inducted Wolf-Brothers, these marines are rash and impetuous, struggling to control their inner wolf. They are eager to charge into battle and gain glory, and are best suited to rapid strikes and close quarters action.
- Raven Claws - A select group of amongst the most aggressive Red Claws, these jump-pack equipped marines fulfill the role of Interceptors and Vanguard Suppressors.
- Swift Claws - Another subset of the Red Claws, they are equipped with Assault Bikes, forming a swift and brutal rapid attack force.
- Black Manes - If Red Claws survive long enough, they will graduate into the ranks of the Black Manes. Experienced warriors, their eagerness to recklessly gain glory is tempered by a more methodical way of making war. They form the majority of the Chapter’s population, and are the equivalent of Intercessors in other Chapters.
- Wolf Scouts - A diverse group of specialists, these Marines are not Neophytes, as in other Chapters. Instead they are dedicated Marines who have mastered Stealth and Asymmetrical Warfare. Selected for their role in the Black Mane phase of their lives, these warriors fulfill the role of Incursors, Vanguard Infiltrators and Vanguard Eliminators in other Chapters.
- Reivers - A subset of the already Select Wolf Scouts, the Reivers operate in small detached units behind enemy lines, sewing terror amongst enemy troops.
- Long Fangs - The oldest and most experienced warriors in the chapter. Their brutality and effectiveness in combat is not dampened by their age, but instead focused by years and years of experience. Theirs is a studied, methodical, way of war compared to their brothers, and these Marines are entrusted with the heavy weapons of Hellblasters and Aggressors.
- Verangi - The most elite of the already elite Long Fangs, These Veterans are the most experienced killers in the Chapter. They serve as a guard of the Jarl, deployed at the most opportune moment to turn the tide of battle, entrusted with the most dangerous of missions and guarding of the most high value objectives. The usage of the Chapter’s very limited supply of Terminator Armor is the exclusive purview of these elite units.
- Thunderwolf Cavalry - An Elite unit of the Long Fangs, these former Swift Claws ride into battle astride the fearsome Thunder Wolves.
- Lone Wolves - It is an unfortunate truth that even Space Marines are not immortal, and war will take its toll upon every Pack. The final survivor of a Pack which has suffered terribly, or a Marine who has been shunned by the other members of his Pack is known as a Lone Wolf. Taciturn to a fault, these warriors will often travel the Galaxy alone, seeking redemption or absolution.

+++Chapter Culture & Beliefs+++
Much like their Space Wolf forebears, the Night Wolves are a tight-knit and rowdy bunch. Boasting, sparing, non-lethal honor duels, and heavy alcohol consumption are all regular hallmarks of daily life within the Chapter. This is an imitation of native Fenrisian culture, to which the Chapter very much sees itself as directly related to. Education in Finrisian Mythology is considered an integral part of a Marine’s training. However, while individual marines may vary, overall the Chapter is less rigidly superstitious than their forebearers, for example acknowledging the inherently psychic nature of their Rune Priests. The Chapter also holds great bittersweet reverence for the re Wulfen brothers, seeing them as having been both blessed, as their inner wolf is set free, and cursed, as their duty to the Emperor is effectively at an end. Efforts are made by the Ulfsarks to transport these Marines back home to Rickgard, but most Wulfen must, unfortunately, be euthanized.
++Chapter Combat Doctrine++
“Prolonged war wastes lives.” is the guiding principle of the Chapter. Benefiting from a close association with unaugmented forces of the Trojus system, the Night Wolves concentrate on devastating schock strikes over prolonged warfare. As such, the Chapter specializes in swift offensives against the most hardened target in a given combat zone, leaving prolonged attritional conflicts to more numerous allied forces of unaugmented humans.
++Recruiting Practices & Training Trials++
Specialist Chapter Thralls are stationed on the main worlds of the Trojus system: Krai and Mafrikan. These Thralls monitor the planet’s juvenile population for any exceptionally strong or smart or quick individuals. These youths are transported to Rickgard where the Master of the Den, an Ulfsark (Wolf Priest), organizes them into ad hoc training units. These units are not yet permitted to enter the Pup’s Den, instead being tasked with various seemingly impossible trials while housed in small camps in the harsh arctic wilderness. Those who survive and are deemed worthy are allowed to enter the Fortress-Monastery to begin the guiling, deadly path, and innumerable further trials necessary to becoming a Night Wolf.
After years and years of brutal, deadly training and implantation of the Space Marine’s gifts, there is one final trial: the Test of Morkai. Like the Space Wolves, the Neophyte (more accurately the Unger) drinks a concoction (containing the Canis Helix) from the Grail of the Wulfen, instantly knocking the Neophyte out. They are then transported to a random location upon Rickgard, all the while the superhuman is transformed into a snarling, beasteal, hairy, unthinking, violent brutes known as a Wulfen. The Neophyte must overcome their inner wolf and make their way back to the Pup’s Den, surviving the harsh environment, monstrous beasts, and other Wulfen who failed their trials. Only then may the survivors claim the mantle of Night Wolf.
++Chapter Gene-Seed++
As inheritors of the Space Wolves’ Gene-Seed, they suffer the dual blessing and curse of the Canis Helix. In its dormant form the Marines benefit from heightened sense of sight, smell, hearing, and taste even beyond that of their Space Marine brethren from other genetic lineages, while their canine teeth are elongated into fangs and eyes turn a color yellow-gold, and the Marine benefits from a bold, aggressive disposition. However, while this inner wolf spirit can be a boon, it may become a curse. In situations of extreme stress or duress, the Marine may lose control over themselves, and succumb to the curse of the Wulfen, transforming into a slobbering, hairy, unthinking, violent, monstrous beast. The Ulfsark’s of the Chapter are tasked with the care and return to Rickgard of these afflicted Marines, but more often than not they must be put down.

++Chapter Relics++
As a young Chapter, the Night Wolves maintain scant few relics or artifacts with storied pasts when compared to their ancient forebears. However, they have been granted access to Frost and Helfrost Weaponry by the Space Wolves, and are in possession of a few rare items, and guard them with reverent zealotry.
- Grail of the Wulfen - Like the Space Wolves’ Cup of Wulfen, the Grail is used in the ritual of creation of their Aspirants' transformation into full-fledged Astartes.
- Midjohldniir - A recreation of the potent relic of Foehammer, the Space Wolves’ relic wielded by Logan Grimnar's Champion Arjac Rockfist, Glamdring is a rune-inscribed Thunder Hammer with an in-built teleportation device that returns the weapon to Arjac's hand should he throw it at a foe or lose it in combat.
- Frost Blades - Frost Blades are potent weapons, unique to Russ’ Sons, that can carve through the heaviest armour with ease. Frost Blades usually take the forms of Chainswords or Chainaxes, though they can exist in the form of any type of Imperial melee weapon. Frost Blades are masterworks from the Night Wolves’ Iron Priests, each is incredibly rare and prestigious. The teeth of these icy Chain Weapons are always cut from nigh-unbreakable substances such as Ice Kraken fangs or tempered diamond. The unique power fields enveloping Frost Blades have a distinctive blue cast. A Frost Blade combines the best qualities of a Chain Weapon and a Power Weapon. Some Frost Axes have blades of energised diamond that give the weapons the appearance that they have been carved from a single, lethal shard of ice.
- Helfrost Weaponry - The Iron Priests of the Chapter have long mastered the construction of directed energy weapons that use the precious Glimmerfrost Crystals unique to Fenris as specialised focussing lenses. By altering the flow of energy through the Glimmerfrost Crystal the Helfrost Weapons are able to fire focussed or dispersed beams of freezing cold energy. Anything the Helfrost beam touches is frozen solid and made extremely brittle. Enemies are frozen in place and shattered by the lightest touch into thousands of shards of crystallised flesh.
- Wolf Claws - Wolf Claws are a variant of the Lightning Claws used by other Space Marine Chapters. This particular pattern is identical to that used by the savage warriors of the Space Wolves Chapter. Wolf Claws are heavily armoured gauntlets with curved, razor-edged talons sheathed in a rippling power field of pure energy. Used most effectively in pairs, Wolf Claws are angled to echo the talons of the wolf. They allow the wielder to cut four times instead of once with each strike, either slashing to maximise a warrior's chance of hitting the foe or stabbing deep to ensure a swift kill.
- Belts of Russ - Each Great Clan has in its possession a single Belt of Russ. These are powerful girdles incorporating potent gravitic force fields that protect the wearer. Replicas of those forged by the master Space Wolf Iron Priest Stef Blacksoul after the disappearance of Russ, these belts are important relics of the Chapter.
- Fenris Pattern Wolf Helm - This pattern of helmet is a unique product of the Space Wolves Iron Priests, gifted by that august Chapter to their Night Wolf ken. featuring the snarling visage of a Fenrisian Wolf. In addition to the intimidating appearance of these helmets the snout also incorporates an atmospheric interchange system that enables the wearer to take in small amounts of air from the surrounding environment without compromising the environmental seals of the wearer's Power Armour. This allows Night Wolves to use their heightened senses of taste and smell while utilising the protection and auto-senses of an Astartes battle-helm.
- Wolf Skull Helms - These stylised helms are worn by the Chapter's Wolf Priests rather than the human skull helmets more typical amongst the Chaplains of other Adeptus Astartes Chapters.
- Wolf Amulets - These ornate amulets function identically to the Rosarius amulets used by the Chaplains of other Chapters, containing powerful force-field generators that protect the wearer from all but the most deadly attacks.
- Runic Staffs - Runic Staffs are mighty artefacts carried by War-Skalds (Rune Priests) that are imbued with the most powerful psychic wards the War-Skalds can devise that protect the wielder from the psychic attacks of his enemies.
- Runic Totems - The Russ’ Sons have many traditions that are unique to their Chapter, and at the heart of Fenrisian mysticism stand the War-Skalds. Using their arcane arts they craft rune totems to call upon the powers of Fenris' mythic beasts, and Space Wolves fiercely believe that these talismans can lend the bearer power from the spirit whose name is inscribed upon it.
- Great Wolf Pelts - Among the wargear of the Night Wolves are wolf pelts from some of the greatest Fenrisian Wolves that have served the Chapter. Some of these pelts are large even for a Space Marine, trailing behind them and hanging over their armour like a tide of fur. A Wolf-Brother wearing such a pelt honours the memory of the wolf by carrying it once more into battle
- Wolf Pelts - Fenrisian Wolves are renowned across the galaxy for their viciousness. They are respected creatures, and greatly entwined with Space Wolf beliefs. Unarmed hunting rituals exist on Fenris to prove a warrior's prowess. Should a Wolf-Brother succeed on such a hunt, he typically displays the pelt of the animal thereafter.
- Wolf Tooth Necklaces - Created from the teeth of Fenrisian Wolves, a Wolf Tooth Necklace is reputed to grant the wearer strength and ferocity in combat like that of the wolf it was taken from. Whether or not there is any true power in such tokens (like those talismans crafted by the Chapter's War-Skalds), the effects on a Space Wolves Wolf-Brother's morale and ferocity cannot be denied.
+++Chapter Appearance+++
++Chapter Colours++
Individual Marines are allowed a substantial degree of aesthetic personalization with regards to their armor. This most often comes in the form of wolf totems such as teeth and pelts, runic inscriptions and etchings, chains, and other personally significant items. Official Chapter coloration consists of gunmetal grey plates with black armor joints, left knee, helm, and shoulder pauldrons, trimmed in steel. Hands, feet, the right knee, and Imperialis (or more accurately, a winged-wolf's head) are blood red in colour.
Pack role symbols are displayed on the right pauldron and similar in shape to those dictated in the Codex Astartes. However, these symbols are formed in the "Fenrisian knot" artistic style. Symbols indicating specific Pack assignment (usually a rune corresponding to the first letter of the Khjarl's name) is also displayed on the right pauldron. The Chapter’s symbol, a howling wolf in a crescent moon (also depicted using the fenrisian knot style) is displayed on the left pauldron. A symbol indicating Great Clan assignment is displayed on the right knee.
The Helm is used to indicate rank in a manner similar to that dictated by the Codex Astartes, with Khjarl wearing a blood red helm, Husdrengirs a Steel helm, Huskhjarl a steel helm with a broad blood red stripe running from the forehead back, Thane have a black helm with a broad blood red stripe flanked on either side by two steel stripes running from the forehead back, and Jarls have a all black helm with a steel wolf-skull emblem on the forehead.
Officially sanctioned decorations and qualification badges take the form of small emblems, glyphs and runes displayed in a grid on the left side of the chest.
Great Clan and Pack designation, combat role, rank, qualifications and decorations (as well as the Chapter’s emblem itself) are tattooed, branded, or ritually scarred onto the flesh of the Marine.
+++Chapter Badge+++
The Night Wolves Chapter icon consists of a large howling "Fenrisian knot"-style wolf head surrounded by a white crescent moon, centered upon a field of deep black.
+++Chapter Relations+++
++Allies++
While participating in the Indominus Crusade, the Night Wolves were often deployed alongside other forces native to the Trojus system, including the Astra Militarum, Adepta Sororitas, Adeptus Mechanicus, Adeptus Titanicus, Imperial Navy and even Inquisitorial formations. These diverse forces frequently coordinating has lead to a tight, if officially informal, alliance amongst Trojus forces. For example, Night Wolves will oftentimes act as a spearhead against the hardest targets in an advance, allowing the comparatively weaker but far more numerous Guard forces to "mop-up" enemy holdouts (even if these mopping-up actions are more often than not months or years long campaigns in their own right), or a mixed force featuring Marines and Sororitas forming a strike group to eliminate a dangerous underhive cult, or a joint Navy/Marine task force eliminating an Ork infested space hulk before it can make planet fall, or even Mechanicus Skitarii and Inquisitorial Stormtroops working in tandem to secure a fragment of an STC. Suffice to say that the formations of the Trojus system are amongst the most versatile and effective in the Imperium.
++Enemies++
The Chapter has almost exclusively been deployed against the insidious forces of Chaos. More specifically, the Chapter’s formative years were spent liberating the Trojus system from incursions led by the Black Legion, Thousand Sons, and most especially the World Eaters traitor legions. The greatest enmety lies with the World Eaters, whose uncontrollable rage perversely mirrors the noble savagery of the Russ’ Sons.
