The Night Furies are a Ultima Founding semi-Codex compliant Chapter formed from the long lost Blood Wyverns 5th Company at the dawn of the 42nd Millennium during the Indomitus Crusade. Currently based in the Highlands Sector on the border of Segmentums Pacificus and Obscurus, the Night Furies have taken up residence on the Blood Wyverns former homeworld, Hades. Their gene-seed shows that the returned Primarch and Lord Commander of the Imperium, Roboute Guilliman, is their gene-sire.
Currently operating in relative seclusion from the rest of the Imperium, the Night Furies have been tasked by the Primarch with patrolling the border of the Cicatrix Maledictum closest to their territory for Chaos incursions and defending nearby Imperial worlds from invasion. In addition to this tasking, the Chapter also maintains a secondary objective in this region known only to them: to hunt down their former brethren in the Blood Wyverns, who have since turned to the service of the Ruinous Powers in the 5th Company's millennia of absence, and to destroy them in order to remove the black stain upon their honour.
Chapter History
Early History
Return of the Fifth Company
In the year 657.M38, the Blood Wyverns 5th Company was enroute back to their homeworld of Hades after the successful extermination of an upstart Ork WAAAGH! on the edge of Imperial space, putting down the greenskins attempt to wage war against the Imperium before it could even begin. As their Strike Cruiser, the Umbral Wraith, was travelling through the immaterium, an unexpected malfunction occurred within the vessels gellar shield system. Despite being repaired near instantaneously by on-duty serfs and Techmarines, they went down long enough for the Umbral Wraith to be boarded by daemons. The ensuing battle would throw the Strike Cruiser off course and deeper into the wild currents of the Warp. It would only be through the expert navigation of the ships Navigator and the steadfast might of the Adeptus Astartes that would see them barely survive this encounter and eventually break back out into realspace.
Unfortunately, due to both the ever-increasing un-predictability of the Warp and being thrown off-course by the Daemonic invasion, the 5th Company and crew of the Umbral Wraith would find themselves re-appearing in realspace over three and a half millennia after they had originally begun their journey, in the year 000.M42. Making contact with a nearby strikeforce hailing from a multitude of Imeprial forces, including Adeptus Astartes Chapters which included the likes of the Howling Wolves, Ebon Blades, Desert Spears, Abyssal Fangs, Frost Wraiths and Yellow Jackets Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, they would be surprised when they were met with open hostility and drawn weapons in response to their request for aid.
A Blood Wyvern of the 5th Company arrayed in his Chapter's livery, before the formation of the Night Furies Chapter.
Only barely avoiding battle with their cousin-Chapters thanks to the wisdom offered by the Librarians of the Howling Wolves, whom had observed that something was different about these Blood Wyverns, a meeting was agreed to onboard the Howling Wolves Strike Cruiser Nebulous Stalker. In the meeting that followed, Captain Harper of the 5th Company explained his situation to his fellow Space Marines, and enquired as to why they were met with such open hostility. Confirming with his Librarians that the Blood Wyvern spoke the truth, the senior strikeforce commander, hailing from the Howling Wolves, informed Captain Harper of all that had transpired with his Chapter whilst they were gone, the revelation about the fate of his battle-brothers and Chapter almost shocking him to the point of disbelief if it were not for the records provided by his fellow Astartes.
Seeing no other option for the survival of his brothers, Captain Harper submitted himself and his company to the judgement of their fellow Astartes, of whom a council of the senior-most officers from each present Chapter, as well as representatives of the Ordo Hereticus whom were present withint he fleet. After a grueling trial and test of purity that lasted mere months, expedited by the strikeforces desperate situation after being caught unawares by the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum, the 5th Company was cleared of taint and corruption. In this most unusual of circumstances, the now de-facto Chapter Master Harper of the loyalist Blood Wyverns was granted special dispensation to continue the usage of his Chapter's name and livery for the time-being as the rag-tag fleet of Imperial forces made a bee-line for Holy Terra after those few surviving astropaths among the fleet received psychic visions of doom pertaining the cradle of Mankind.
Battlegroup Salvation & Journey to Terra
Forced to travel in short, arduous warp jumps on their way to Terra due to the fluctuation of the Astronomicon and the ever increasing turmoil within the Warp in the wake of the 13th Black Crusade, the fleet that would come to be known as Battlegroup Salvation would spend the better part of a year trying to make it to Terra in order to defend the homeworld from the as of yet unknown threat. Enroute to Terra, the mixed-fleet of Imperial forces would add to their ranks scattered regiments of Imperial Guard, Navy starships, and myriad other survivors of the rampant daemonic assaults raging across the Imperium. One such force, the 71st Nexus Guard Mechanized Regiment whom had been retrieved as they retreated from the world they had been attempting to defend from Chaos incursion, brought news with them that caused a resurged feeling of hope and determination, as well as some small amount of skepticism and uncertainty, across Battlegroup Salvation. Primarch Roboute Guilliman, gene-sire of the Ultramarines and son of the Emperor of Mankind, had returned.
Primarch Roboute Guilliman, now on Terra and organizing the Imperium's defense against the relentless surge of Chaos forces across the galaxy, had ordered all available Imperial forces on those worlds barely holding back the enemy to break away from their engagements, and to regroup at Terra. Confronted with the return of a living, breathing Primarch, and his commands issued to them, Battlegroup Salvation began to hasten their speed to Terra, no longer in an effort to defend the homeworld against invasion, but to answer the call of the Lord Commander of the Imperium.
Arrival at Terra & Dawn of the Night Furies
After over a year of travel across the war-torn realspace of the Imperium, and the dangerously turbulent currents of the Warp, Battlegroup Salvation would arrive in the Sol System alongside thousands of other Imperial forces heeding the call of the living Primarch, all moving to one of the many muster points to await much needed repair, resupply, and medicae personnel for the many wounded brought with them.
Once his Chapter had settled in amongst the other forces at their muster point, Chapter Master Harper would depart from the Umbral Wraith, making his way to Holy Terra onboard a Thunderhawk, accompanied by his peers among the other Battlegroup Salvation Astartes and Inquisitorial forces. Once on the surface of Mankind's homeworld, an audience was sought, and granted, with Lord Commander Roboute Guilliman. It is unknown what exact words were traded during this meeting, only that a plea was made to the returned Primarch to allow his still loyal sons among the Blood Wyverns to continue their service to the Imperium, and aid him in the upcoming crusade.
Awaiting the return of their Chapter Master, the remaining Blood Wyverns would detect a small flotilla of starships making their way towards the Umbral Wraith's position in the muster point. The vox-transmission that followed would leave them stunned.
Contacting them from the bridge of the Courageous-class Battleship Vindicta Dominatus , Chapter Master Jason Harper informed his battle-brothers of their future. Granted a small fleet of starships, accompanied by enough material and personnel to sustain the operation of a Space Marine Chapter, the last loyalist Blood Wyverns were to be reformed into the Night Furies Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. Not only that, but to bolster their severely understrength numbers, Chapter Master Harper was accompanied by nine full companies of Space Marines in unmarked grey power armour. Different to any other Space Marines they had seen in their centuries of service to the Imperium, the Night Furies were informed that these new arrivals were known as the Primaris Space Marines, a leap forward in the evolution of the Adeptus Astartes, and their new battle-brothers. Reactions to this news varied. While all of the Firstborn warriors of the Night Furies were grateful for these reinforcements granted to them, a number of them also held a degree of suspicion towards them; Who were these new warriors? Where had they come from? What made them supposedly more advanced than them? and most importantly, were they even battle-tested?
These questions and many more plagued the Firstborn warriors, but for now they would have to be put aside, after all, there was a Chapter to build. Repainting their wargear to a midnight black and arming themselves with fresh supplies from Mars, the Night Furies set about establishing themselves, even as the first forces of the Indomitus Crusade began to make ready to depart along their pre-determined routes. Forming the elite core of the Chapter, those warriors of the 5th Company would become the veteran 1st Company of the Night Furies, Veteran Sergeant Talos Drake taking on the mantle of Captain of the First Company, while the ranks of Greyshields, now Night Furies themselves, filled out the ranks of the other companies.
Setting out from Terra alongside the vast formations comprising Fleet Tertius, the first battle of the Night Furies as a Chapter, particularly their Primaris reinforcements, would be the Battle of Machorta Sound. Arriving in the Machorta Sound in order to engage and stop the efforts of the Crusade of Slaughter, whom sought to prevent Warp travel outside of Sol, the Night Furies were part of those Imperial troops dispatched to prosecute the enemy on those nearby worlds that had been captured by the Forces of Chaos, while the main bulk of Fleet Tertius engaged the enemies fleet.
Upon the conclusion of the battle, it's result a resounding success for the Indomitus Crusade, the Night Furies would link back up with the fleet and depart with them, moving to their next objective in the crusade.
Departing the Fleet & Hades
As Fleet Tertius continued it's push throughout Segmentum Pacificus, taking worlds such as Vorlese and Hydraphur back for the Imperium, and arcing back around towards Segmentum Tempestus, the Night Furies would eventually detach themselves from the fleet to begin independent operations as a Chapter.
Now that the Night Furies were an independent force, no longer attached to a wider battlegroup, Chapter Master Harper and his command immediately set about finding a suitable world from which to conduct their operations. While a number of suitable planets along the border-space of the Cicatrix Maledictum were identified and proposed to the Chapter Master by his Captains and Senior Fleet Officers, only one world, not proposed thus far, kept appering in his thoughts. Making his decision, a course was set for Hades.
Arriving in-system, the fleet moved to the former homeworld of the Blood Wyverns, splitting up and establishing a geosynchronous orbit over the planet and her twin moons. Making landfall, the Night Furies went about both securing the long-abandoned and ruined remains of their progenitor Chapter's facilities, and collecting suitable subjects from among the local population in order to verify their genetic integrity for gene-seed implantation.
Although the fortress-monastery of Wyvern's Rest lay in ruins, ransacked almost entirely by the Minotaurs and Marines Malevolent Chapters, many hidden vaults and storehouses lay scattered across Hades and her moons that remained untouched. With ancient access-codes and gene-locks still recognizing them, these hidden vaults became open to them, revealing ranks of wargear, munitions, equipment, power armour, and vehicles left behind, undisturbed for millennia as they slumbered away in the Chapter's reserves.
Success was not only to be found by the Chapter's salvage teams, but also by the Apothecary detachment dispatched to evaluate the genetic purity of the native people whom they once drew Aspirants from. All evaluations on their physical, psychological, and spiritual purity had come back in the green, verifying their ability to once more serve as a source of recruits for the Chapter.
Over the coming year, the manpower and resources required to restore Wyvern's Rest would be shipped to Hades, the reconstruction of the Chapter's ancient home being completed after months of intense labour.

Honour Guard
The Honour Guard of the Night Furies Chapter are the sworn guardians of both the Chapter Master and the Chapter Banner, while also enforcing the Chapter Masters will when assigned to other Company's to be the eyes and ears of the Chapter Master.
To become an Honour Guard is to display courage, honour, and loyalty above the normal call in a given combat situation. Each Honour Guard is equipped with ornate Master-Crafted Artificer Power Armour, each possessing a component of the power armour worn by past heroes of the Chapter, while they are also given free reign of the Chapter Armoury for their weapons of choice, though most usually settle for dual Master-Crafted Power Swords and a twin Master-Crafted Bolt Pistol set with specialist ammo.
Among the Honour Guard three individuals stand out, the Chapters Ancient, the Chapter Champion, and the Honour Guard Apothecary. The Chapters Ancient is the bearer of the sacred Chapter Banner, while the Chapter Champion is the mightiest of the Honour Guard often acting as both the personal bodyguard of the Chapter Master and as his envoy. Finally the Honour Guard Apothecary has the sole job to see to the physical well being of the Honour Guard alone, so other Apothecaries may tend to the rest of their wounded Battle-Brothers.
Night Furies Librarians
Like their fellow Astartes Chapters, the Night Furies also maintain a Librarium of potent psykers who are highly talented and trained to master the power of the Warp at the highest levels. Each Chapter selects its Librarians in its own way, either from seed worlds, as it does with the bulk of its Initiates, or from the ranks of gifted psykers brought to the Scholastica Psykana. Most Chapters train and test chosen psykers following the ancient ways laid out in the Codex Astartes. Librarians of the Night Furies are trained in this way, and, with some minor variances, have been taught to live by the word of the Codex unless their Judgement and Instinct proves to be sounder.
Order of Battle
Like most Codex Astartes compliant Chapters, the Night Furies are divided into ten companies of a hundred Space Marines each. Each company is led by a Captain of the Chapter, who -- in addition to his company command -- is in charge of a particular aspect of the Chapter's logistics. Each Company is also given a Chaplain, Librarian, two Apothecaries, and Techmarines to assist them.

Chapter Fleet
Due to their role in patrolling the turbulent borders between the Cicatrix Maledictum and realspace on the side of Imperium Sanctus, the Night Furies posses a Chapter fleet slightly larger than normal, consisting of a large number of Vanguard-class Light Cruisers and Nova-class Frigates in order to combat the horrors emerging from that great tear in reality.
The Chapter fleet of the Night Furies is known to contain the following starships:
- Fury of Vengeance (Courageous Tyrannis-class Battleship) - The Fury of Vengeance is an Imperial battleship of the recently revived Courageous-class line of ships, resurrected on orders from Primarch Roboute Guilliman and the upper echelons of the Adeptus Mechanicus, gifted to the fledgling Night Furies Chapter to serve as their flagship in order to support this newly founded force of Space Marines. Intended to serve as mobile fortress-monasteries and fleet flagships, these vessels have been put into production to supplement the naval forces of the Indomitus Crusade, each one constructed differently for it's intended role. The Fury of Vengeance was one of many such vessels made with the intention of serving the needs of the Adeptus Astartes, and as such was modified heavily to accommodate the needs of a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, containing the facilities and weaponry to support Astartes operations.
- Umbral Wraith (Battle Barge) - The Umbral Wraith is the last known Loyalist vessel of the original Blood Wyverns Chapter fleet, ferrying the 5th Company back to their Chapter homeworld of Hades from a recently finished conquest, only to be spat back into realspace far off-course and two and a half millennia after they had departed. In the time between when she returned to realspace and the present, the Umbral Wraith has undergone serious refit and overhauls to bring her up to specs with more modern designs. Currently serves as the dedicated vessel of the 1st Company.
- Alecto (Mk.I Vanguard-class Strike Cruiser) - The Alecto is one of the three dedicated Vanguard-class Strike Cruisers of the Night Furies fleet that accompanies the Chapter Flagship, the Fury of Vengeance, wherever it goes, serving as a heavy escort. It's sister vessels are called the Tisiphone and Megaera, all three collectively referred to as the Erinyes.
- Tisiphone (Mk.II Vanguard-class Strike Cruiser) - The Tisiphone is one of the three dedicated Vanguard-class Strike Cruisers of the Night Furies fleet that accompanies the Chapter Flagship, the Fury of Vengeance, wherever it goes, serving as a heavy escort. It's sister vessels are called the Alecto and Megaera, all three collectively referred to as the Erinyes.
- Megaera (Mk.III Vanguard-class Strike Cruiser) - The Megaera is one of the three dedicated Vanguard-class Strike Cruisers of the Night Furies fleet that accompanies the Chapter Flagship, the Fury of Vengeance, wherever it goes, serving as a heavy escort. It's sister vessels are called the Alecto and Tisiphone , all three collectively referred to as the Erinyes.
