The Mastodons are a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter created during the most recent Ultima Founding, comprised entirely of newly revealed Primaris Space Marines. Their Chapter Master, Aldrick Thunderborn, and his council alone knows the Chapter's original genetic material, not wanting the gene-seed to direct the Mastodons in how they fight, keeping this knowledge as a tightly held secret.

As siege warfare specialists, the Mastodons utilise slow, methodical, precision warfare followed by crushing armoured assaults with overwhelming firepower. Due to their preferred fighting style, the entirety of the Chapter is comprised entirely of Primaris Marines, the next stage of evolution of transhuman warriors - larger, hardier and stronger - and armed with a formidable array of newly unleashed wargear and weapons.

In battle, the Chapter's planetary assaults are spearheaded by a mobile fortress, a massive city-sized land crawler that is transported by an ancient Ark Mechanicus, gifted to the Chapter following a campaign where they helped destroy a series of Dark Mechanicus fortresses.

Chapter History

Founding

Following the destruction of the vital fortress world of Cadia at the hands of the Forces of Chaos during the 13th Black Crusade, reality was torn asunder, and a great massive tear formed across the width of the galaxy. Known as the Cicatrix Maledictum, hell was unleashed upon thousands of Imperial worlds, as Chaos cults rose up in open rebellion, as daemonic legions, Chaos Warbands and even the ancient Traitor Legions, poured forth from the Great Rift to ravage and slaughter the worlds of the Imperium.

The galaxy had not seen such destruction and savagery since the time of the Horus Heresy. The realm of the Emperor of Mankind was beset upon all sides by the heretic, apostate, xenos and the daemonic. However, a light in the darkness shone forth in this most dire era - the Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman was reborn! Rallying the remnants of the Imperium's forces, he gathered a mighty Imperial crusade fleet and declared the Indomitus Crusade - to take the fight to the forces of darkness and reclaim the galaxy for Mankind.

It was during this time that the newly-elected Lord Commander of the Imperium revealed his ultimate contingency plan - ten-millennia in the making. Guilliman revealed legions of newly awakened Primaris Space Marines. Designed to be the next stage of evolution for the Adeptus Astartes, these newly created warriors were given a formidable array of arms and equipment, and took part in the ongoing Indomitus Crusade. Created from the genetic lineage of all nine Loyalist First Founding Chapters, several newly created Chapters were raised during the Ultima Founding. One such Chapter was the newly created Mastodons Chapter.

The Mastodons first gained notoriety in a campaign against the Dark Mechanicus that had established a foothold in the Ultramar System to provide material support to the 13th Black Crusade. A combination of Adeptus Mechanicus, Collegia Titanica and Questor Imperialis Knight Households, along with the Mastodons broke the hold of the Dark Mechanicus on several planets through a series of prolonged sieges. For their efforts, the Mastodons were awarded one of the recovered planets in the Ultramar System, called Orios, in gratitude from the Ultramarines. From the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Mastodons were awarded a mobile fortress of gigantic size and a Titan-Class transport to move it, along with several support ships.

When the Mastodons deploy into a warzone they do so in Chapter strength with their mobile fortress. Advanced forces will secure landing zones, destroy or disable planetary defense systems to ensure the safe landing of "The Fort".

Notable Campaigns

Chapter Home World

Orios is located in the Eastern part of Ultima Segmentun, close to the Forge World Triplex Thrall. Orios is a arid climate planet with no single large body of water but instead several dozen large lakes. The Northern and Southern regions are dotted by snow caped mountains and rugged terrain. Orios is scarcely populated with small nomadic tribes mostly occupying the equatorial zone.

Orios was the last planet the Dark Mechanicus occupied and attempted to enslave the tribes. Even with there limited resources the tribesmen were able to resist until the thunder of war came to the surface. Titans from Legio Victorum with Skratii from Triplex Phall along with the Mastodons were able to quickly liberate the planet and destroy the last stronghold of the Dark Mechiancus.

Fortress-Monastery

"The Fort" as its become known as was gifted to the Mastodons after the liberation of Orios. The Fort is a city sized fortress land-crawler riding atop massive tracks that stretch the length of the The Fort. The Fort has an outer wall dotted with towers and fighting positions large enough for heavy guns and tanks. Within the walls is where the Mastodons call home. Everything the chapter needs is contained within, armories, hangers, berthing, chapels. Along with "The Fort" and Adeptus Mechanicus also included a small army of Tech-Priest to keep it running. Its power supply and systems are kept a strict secret from the Mastodons. "The Fort" is constantly moving around the equator of Orios, never stopping unless to be picked up by its transport. After the liberation of Orios many of the tribes who were directly effected have decided to follow "The Fort" on its never ending journey and as a result many of the Mastodons are recruited from these tribes. When "The Fort" is moved the tribes will stop in place until it returns, offering up the young men of the tribes to replenish the Mastodons losses.

The Mastodons strictly recruit from the tribes on Orios. The tribes are separated into three categories. The Lake Tribes who live in static settlements, the Plains tribes that move with The Fort as nomadic tribes and the Mountain tribes which are the most isolated and aggressive. The natives of Orios have a high conversion rate into Primaris Space Marines and having a tribe member accepted into the Chapter is a mark of honor for the tribe and greatly celebrated. The ill and old are also offered up as Servitors, Servants and any else the Chapter may need. After a campaign and upon return to Orios all the tribes gather in mass to celebrate the return of the Mastodons and hold great feast and competitions to fill the Mastodons ranks.

Chapter Gene-Seed

Alderick Thunderborn surrender his given name to adopt a tribal name. He and his high council alone know the true origin of the chapters Gene-seed. Alderick wanted the Mastodons to grow into a Chapter not shadowed by there orgians.
