The Lion's Regents, also known as the Leo Astra & Spás Lios or Space Lions in High Gothic & their chapter's Gothic respectively, are a fleet-based loyalist Space Marines chapter created during the 3rd Founding using geneseed taken from the secretive Dark Angels and their Primarch Lion El'Jonson, making them a part of the Unforgiven.

Chapter History[]

Founding & Early History[]

Initially meant to claim a homeworld when they were founded, the chapter founders instead chose to remain fleet based and establish recruitment fortifications on worlds that show promise for aspirants. The chapter's strike forces deployed across the galaxy to lend their expertise to stalemated conflicts and other seemingly hopeless endeavors. Unknown to their allies many of these missions were also done to cover an Inner Circle operation to capture a Fallen.

Era Indomitus[]

As the Great Rift tore across the galaxy the Lion's Regents had their fleet docked at a small forge world, and together with local Skitarii & Titan Legions plus the PDF were able to hold back a large scale daemonic incursion that fell from the skies upon the world. Following this the forge world became host for the newest recruitment fortification for the chapter.

Chapter Homeworld & Recruitment[]

For recruitment the have a series of small bastions on over a dozen planets that they have saved and the population showed inherit promise as warriors. From these bastions aspirants are trained and judged until they are deemed worthy of implantation to a full fledged Regent of the chapter.

  • Ill'Lyre - This tropical feral world has been the primary source of recruits since their founding, the local population's tribal religion knowing the Emperor as their Sun god Ill which is used as the name of the system and its star. Due to their ignorance of the greater Imperium and tribal loyalty easily turning into chapter loyalty, the feral population of Ill'Lyre has made excellent recruits for an unforgiven chapter.
  • Volmeshan - Industrialized world of filthy hives containing a notable rough population, while it is a boon to the chapter in terms of recruitment the local Arbites have a hard time containing the many different dangerous gangs that roam the underhives. Massive gang wars often spill out of the underhives and into the main spires, on several occasions since their founding the Regents have had to help local forces quell the largest of these gang wars. When they are forced to intervene they often take the most savage possible approach to remind the gangers of why they should fear the astartes.

Fortress-Monastery[]

As a fleet based chapter their Fortress-Monastery is their flagship, the Banshee of Caliban, an ancient and custom made command vessel from long before their founding with technologies often associated with the Dark Angels. As a Ist Legion successor their flagship has advanced weapons like Magna torpedoes for when it must commit a planet to Exterminatus, and Hecutor plasma Macrobatteries for the several decks of broadsides further upgraded with the closely guarded technological secrets of the Unforgiven's unique STC's.

Notable Campaigns[]

  • Sabbat Worlds Crusade (755.M41)- The chapter deployed in its entirety during this crusade in the Segmentum Pacificus against heretic forces. they also found a few Fallen over the course of the crusade with most of them being captured or killed by the Crusade's conclusion.
  • Induction of the Rift Reapers (Early M42): While tracking a Greater Daemon called Azazel running rampant across the Segmentum Solar in the wake of the Great Rift, an Ultima founding chapter of Lion El'Jonson's lineage named the Rift Reapers finally caught up with the daemon and its followers. The veterans that directly dealt with Azazel were exposed to the secret of the Fallen, as several had been part of the demon's warband and gloated of their existence to the ignorant loyalists, and instinctively kept any allies away from the single Fallen prisoner when they finally caught up to the primaris deep within the daemon's lair. Not long after this a strike force from the Lion's Regents arrived and secured all evidence of the Fallen, both the mutilated bodies and the sole survivor, and from there brought the primaris veterans that saw the Fallen to the Rock to unknowingly stand trial for their chapter's future. Once they were deemed completely loyal and ready for the rest of the truth they had been exposed to without preparation for, the veterans created their version of the Inner circle called the Sect and the chapter fully joined the Unforgiven.

Chapter Organization[]

The chapter is mostly codex compliant though with the normal differences seen in the Unforgiven as well as a few others unique just to the chapter. Instead of their veteran company being entirely a Deathwing it is instead filled with veteran members of all the wings, a small squad of Deathwing terminators being found in most companies as part of its veterans as well as several squads within the veteran company. As they are a constantly moving fleet based chapter it is unknown how many Regents there are at any given time, giving rise to some accusations of over recruiting, but the chapter maintains that they recruit to ensure they will not run out during a heavy crusade.

Inner Circle[]

Given the unique layout for their Deathwing and Ravenwing as well as the other Wings, every company has a strike force that can act on time sensitive intelligence if needed. While all Regents of the Deathwing & Ravenwing are members of the Inner Circle, the other Wings are used as proving grounds before bringing them into the Inner Circle and thus only have a few squads in each that are privy to the chapter's many secrets. Besides the senior officers, the entire Deathwing & the Ravenwing, Interrogator-Chaplains & the senior most officers of the Chaplaincy, the Librarians of the Leo Esoterica, the senior most Apothecaries, and veteran members of the other Wing formations, all of those with a Lieutenant rank are privy as well.

Wing Formations[]

While most Unforgiven chapters contain a version of the Deathwing and Ravenwing spread across the companies, the Lion's Regents have all 6 Orders of the Hexagrammaton wings spread across their companies. The company sized formations are each a separate hierarchy outside the normal structure and use their own internal ranks to denote seniority within the wing. All members of the Wings still retain a normal squad assignment in a company, giving each company a selection of all or most of the Wings. The veterans of the 1st company makes up of the senior members of each wing while company veterans along with most sergeants as well as other brothers that have shown enough promise and specialists related to a wing's function make up the rest of the wings. Each wing also has a cruiser as a flagship for them to congregate on that is commanded by the wing's senior officer though each cruiser generally has a secondary duty as well outside of the wing.

Wing Knights[]

Each of the 6 Hexagrammaton wings have a handful of knights that act as the elite warriors in that wing's aspect of warfare. While the Deathwing Terminator Knights and Ravenwing Black Knights are seen outside the chapter, the 4 others; Dreadwing Knights, Ironwing Knights, Stormwing Knights, & Firewing Knights, are unique to the chapter. These Knights are some of the few marines that hold no other position besides their status within their Wing but are nominally part of chapter command as uncounted additions like firstborn scouts in the Vanguard company.

Deathwing & Ravenwing[]

Their Deathwing and Ravenwing are spread across the companies instead of put into single companies, giving each battle company a handful of Terminators and light vehicle units as part of the company veterans.

Dreadwing[]

Many of the sergeants for their fire support squads and veterans that specialize with their use are inducted into the Dreadwing, given access to the most powerful heavy & special weaponry available to the chapter including weaponry long considered taboo like vortex weapon equipped Fellglaives. Similar to the terminator clad Naufragia of the Great Crusade, the terminators of the Dreadwing knights wield powerful heavy weapons like plasma and phosphex weaponry to annihilate their enemies.

Ironwing[]

All of the dreadnoughts and most of the Techmarines as well as those that favor deploying with heavier vehicles are part of the Ironwing to deploy as an opposite to the faster Ravenwing. They also make use of extremely rare patterns of battle automata, with rumors including the nightmarish Exicndio variants from Unification Wars somewhere within their vaults.

Stormwing[]

The members of the Stormwing formation are the foremost in close combat as well as void warfare like boarding & counter-boarding actions. It is normally made up of members from the assault and tactical squads.

Firewing[]

Firewing members are those that use subtlety and are often the veteran scouts as well others who act as an assassin as easily as a scout. The wing's knights fill a role similar to that of heresy era Enigmatii units, focusing on taking out enemy commanders and other senior leaders.

Company Formations[]

  • The 1st Veteran company is made up of Regents from all of the Wings instead of just the Deathwing. The veteran company contains several squads of Deathwing Terminators and Ravenwing Bike squads but the rest are senior members of the other wings.
  • The 2-5th Battle companies all use the same ratio of 6 Battleline, 2 Close Support, and 2 Fire Support squads as seen within the codex instead of the 2nd being made up entirely of the Ravenwing.
  • The 6-7th Battleline Reserve companies are made up of Intercessors and Tactical marines.
  • The 8th Close Support Reserve company is made up of Assault marines, Inceptors, Incursors, and Reivers.
  • The 9th Fire Support Reserve company is made up of Aggressors, Devastators, Eradicators, and Hellblasters.
  • The 10th Vanguard Company is entirely Vanguard units of some kind, along with uncounted Scout marines and Neophytes.

Ranks & Titles[]

Officer Ranks[]

  • Grand Master of Regency - Or simply Grand Master as the rest of the Grand Masters in the chapter go by other titles, is the Chapter Master equivalent for the Lion's Regents and the overseer of the various Hexagrammaton wings to get the most out of their abilities. A curious note is that the chapter believes that only their Primarch himself can claim a title like Supreme Grand Master over any Son of the Lion, and senior officers will often refuse to add supreme to the title when dealing with chapters that use it unless that chapter has earned their respect. While they do not get along with their parent chapter at times, they are one of the few that have earned the honour of their chapter master being addressed by his full title. This does not mean that the Supreme part is not said with distaste at times of verbal conflict.
    • Grand Knights - As the hand-picked veteran honour guard of the chapter master they use some of the finest and most ancient wargear available to the chapter, relic equipment used by the Knights Cenobium dating to the Great Crusade. They are all clad in master crafted Cataphractii pattern terminator armour with wrist mounted plasma casters and wielding Terranic greatswords though some use other power weapons out of preference. They wear ornate robes over their armour like other veterans though theirs is a dark red instead of the normal white seen by the Unforgiven. Each wing is represented within the formation and when a member dies his replacement is pulled from the wing he had been a part of in life. Besides their bodyguard duties they are also the emissaries of the Grand Master and sometimes a knight will be sent to oversee a particularly dangerous warzone on his behalf. Normally it is just to make sure it does not become more than the commander can handle, but if need be will assume command if the situation is out of control. When deployed in this manner they are flanked by Deathwing &/or Ravenwing veterans and are often also sent out in this way to check up on leads to a hidden Fallen.
    • Grand Paladin - The most skilled of the Paladins is known as the Grand Paladin and acts as the equerry of the Grand Master as well as the chapter champion.
  • Master - Company captain equivalent. Each of their flotillas is also commanded by a Master equivalent reversely called a Captain. Like many Unforgiven chapters some of their senior officers carry a Grand Master title including the commander of each hexagrammaton wing.
    • Grand Master of the Fleet
    • Grand Master of Logistics
    • Grand Masters of the Deathwing, Ravenwing, Dreadwing, Ironwing, Stormwing, & Firewing
  • Paladins - Term used for the various company champions of the chapter. Each is also treated as a company officer second only to the Master.
  • Lieutenant - Their is a pair of these officers in each company that assist the masters like most loyalist chapters. Like the veterans each of these officers is also part of a wing.

Inner Circle Ranks[]

  • Preceptor - These elite officers are the senior most members of the Inner circle, as well as the commanders for capture missions, and thus are privy to all but a handful known only to the Grand Master of the Chapter.
  • Seneschal - As a Cenobite learns the entirety of more truths they are eventually regarded as a Seneschal and a guardian of the chapter's secrets and sanctums as the various knights and high ranking specialists within the Inner Circle.
  • Cenobite - As one rises in the ranks of the Inner Circle they encounter small pieces of information from many different secrets that are only revealed as they learn the whole puzzle of information. At an indeterminable time that varies from adept to adept, they will be judged ready to learn the near entirety of a particular truth and become part of a small coven of Cenobites dedicated to its secrecy.
  • Adept - Regents that have learned the initial truth of the Fallen though are far from done learning the secrets of their chapter or the Ist Legion.

Hexagrammaton Ranks[]

  • Praetor - Masters at their aspect of warfare and the commander of an individual wing, those that reach this rank are always senior members of the Inner Circle. This is the highest rank in a wing besides the Grand Master of that wing.
  • Marshal - Besides leading wing formations in large scale warzones, as members of the Inner Circle they offer their unique knowledge to capture teams.
  • Proctor - Though most of this rank are not yet members of the Inner circle, Proctors are nonetheless skilled at an aspect of warfare beyond that expected by the average space marine in other chapters.
  • Initiate - The initial tier within the wings, none at this rank are members of the Inner Circle and are generally brothers that have shown skill in that wing's style of warfare as well as outstanding loyalty to the chapter and the Emperor.

Specialist Ranks[]

  • Grand Master of Sanctity - Also known as the Master chaplain, is the chapter equivalent for the head of the chaplaincy.
    • Reclusiarch
    • Interrogator-Chaplains
    • Chaplains
    • Judicars
  • Grand Master of Knowledge - Also known as the Master Librarian, is the Chief Librarian equivalent and always a high ranking member of the Inner Circle given his ability to delve deep into a Fallen's mind for any kind of secretive information.
    • Leo Esoterica - Senior members of the Librarium and the only Librarians that are part of the Inner Circle. They also act as the personal inner circle for the Chief Librarian himself and keepers of the most forbidden and locked down tomes of the Librarium. All are powerful psykers and veteran warriors with each having centuries of intense study in combating the warp as much as using it for the chapter's own needs.
    • Librarians
    • Vanguard Librarians
  • Grand Master of Healing - Also known as the Master Apothecary, is the Chief Apothecary equivalent.
    • Apothecaries
    • Helix Adepts
  • Master of Technology - Also known as the Forge Master, is the chapter's equivalent to a Master of the Forge that oversees the techmarines and their duties. While not a member of the Inner Circle like most of his rank in Unforgiven chapters, he is the only one with the complete knowledge of the chapter's technological abilities. He is as secretive as the rest of the chapter regarding outsiders including those of the Cult Mechanicus though if they have a reason to deal with the chapter they will usually just go directly to the support flotilla after being cleared to approach the fleet.
    • Techmarines
  • Ancient - Standard Bearer equivalent.
  • Veterans - To become a veteran in the chapter one must be accepted into a wing and judged ready first. This goes for the veterans outside of the 1st company as well like company veterans.

Line Ranks[]

  • Sergeant
  • Regent - Battle Brother equivalent.
  • Vanguard Marines
  • Scout Marines
  • Neophytes

Chapter Beliefs[]

Like most Space Marine chapters they do not see the Emperor as the God-Emperor, instead they see the Emperor simply as the greatest human that will ever live and as the unreachable pinnacle that all of humanity must strive for regardless of the impossibility of it. As their name implies the chapter sees itself as carrying on the will of Lion El'Jonson, sometimes causing friction with other members of the Unforgiven who are seen as acting in their own interests over what the Lion would do. Even their primogenitor chapter is not above being accused of acting out of character for their shared father, currently Azrael & Colm have an understanding though historically they tend to get at each other's throats easily, as such they are not a very popular member of the Unforgiven.

(To Be Added)

Chapter Gene-Seed[]

The chapter is a proud descendant of Lion El'Jonson and thus call the Dark Angels their parent chapter. While they have no inherit mutations within their gene-seed, like most Unforgiven chapters they are very secretive and often deploy their forces covertly when possible as well as being mistrusting of outsiders in general.

Combat Doctrine[]

Overall the chapter maintains a highly flexible tactical mindset brought on from their primarch instead of over specialization, depending on members of the various wings to bring their specialist knowledge to battles. From their fleet they send out strike forces centered around one of the battle companies to warzones as needed while the rest of the fleet stays within a system for several months until the strike forces return. The chapter uses rapid deployment like drop pods and aerial vehicles along with teleportation to out maneuver their enemies.

Notable Members[]

  • Grand Master Colm, Lord of Regency - Brilliant chapter master but taciturn like his Primarch, he has lead the chapter for over 5 centuries across the galaxy against the enemies of humanity as well as in the hunt for the Fallen.
  • Grand Paladin Faolan- Chapter champion and equerry of the Grand Master. Wields a massive power spear called Celchar, a master crafted relic that has long acted as a badge of office for Grand Paladins.
  • Reclusiarch Argalt - Pious guardian of the Reclusium that rarely leaves the sacred ground, though he does involve himself with the interrogations of prisoners and missions involving them.

Chapter Fleet[]

As expected the chapter has a very large fleet, like most of those that are fleet based it includes a multitude of vessels from astartes, naval, and other support vessels not normally associated with the fleets of planetary based chapters. Of these are a handful of ancient warships dating to before the founding of the Legions, a pair of Promethean-class Cruisers & several Tiamat-class Destroyers gifted to them from their parent chapter at their founding in M32. These have kept them for use in the private flotilla of the chapter's Inner Circle, alongside several other warships that are added on a temporary basis. Overall their fleet numbers a few dozen escort & smaller cruiser squadrons, 19 various larger cruisers, & a dozen battle barges & battleships as well as a handful of support vessels. They split their fleet into a handful of sections; the Flagship, Reserve, Scouting, & Support flotillas, each with a distinct role in the chapter's operation. The flagship flotilla is the largest and besides the core of warships guarding the Banshee of Caliban the rest of the flotilla usually splits off to form the primary strike forces of the chapter. The reserve flotilla reinforces the other flotillas as needed with extra warships, and otherwise forms the grid of defensive patrols that constantly surround the bulk of the fleet. The scouting flotilla ranges ahead of the bulk of the fleet, checking warzones to make sure the systems do not contain ambushes or other immediate hazards. The support flotilla contains non combat vessels like their forge ship and some transports, as well as it own warships for defensive purposes.

Flagship Flotilla[]

  • the Banshee of Caliban (Battle Barge): The chapter's flagship and fortress-monastery is an ancient and custom made command vessel that uses a hybrid of an Ironclad & a Retribution-class as it's base design though is slightly larger at roughly 10km and even more heavily armed and shielded, having an extra deck of macrobatteries along the length of the elongated broadsides and topped with an extra dorsal turret a well. It also replaced the normal armoured prow with an equally armoured astartes style prow containing a large frontal launch bay surrounded by torpedo and weapon batteries. The dorsal spine has a row of lance turrets and the entire ship is studded with bombardment cannons.
  • the Cailleach (Battle Barge): Often used as the command vessel for Inner circle strike forces sent to bring in a member of the Fallen. It is also used as the covert meeting place for the Inner circle in the same way each wing has a sanctuary.
  • the Lord Corswain (Apocalypse-class Battleship): Powerful warship that is in the flagship flotilla and added to strike forces expecting heavy void combat.
  • The Spear of Atonement (Promethean-class Cruiser): Relic cruiser used by the Deathwing as their sanctuary meeting place.
  • The Durenal (Promethean-class Cruiser): Secondary relic cruiser of the Inner Circle fleet within the flagship flotilla and the sanctuary of the Ravenwing.
  • The Light of Truth (Tiamat-class Destroyer): Sister ship to the Dark Lance.
  • The Dark Lance (Tiamat-class Destroyer): One of the few surviving warships of its class.

Reserve Flotilla[]

  • the Angel of Death (Emperor-class Battleship): The flagship of the reserve flotilla, though the flotilla is normally spread out reinforcing strike forces and maintaining defensive patrols for the fleet.

Scouting Flotilla[]

  • the Watchful (Vanguard Cruiser): Flagship of the scouting flotilla, ranging ahead of the primary fleet to watch for ambushes. It is joined with another vanguard cruiser as a cruiser squadron as well as another cruiser squadron but with naval light-cruiser classes and an escort squadron.
  • the Firehawk (Vanguard Cruiser): This cruiser is used as the flagship for the Firewing, when not deployed to assist with a wing priority mission it joins the scouting flotilla as the second half of the smaller of the flotilla's pair of cruiser squadrons.

Support Flotilla[]

  • the Flood of Iron (Forge Ship): Large and bulky voidship considered the most important support vessel in the fleet, it is equal to an Ark Mechanicus in industrial output though with far less offensive abilities. While it does have powerful void shielding and relatively thick armour it lacks serious firepower beyond its limited broadsides, a couple dorsal weapon batteries, and a rather extensive point defense system. It does contain several large launch bays at the aft section of each broadside for attack craft. It is the flagship of the support flotilla along with a trio of armed transports that are protected by an Oberon-class battleship, a strike cruiser, a battlecruiser, a squadron of Defender-class light cruisers, and a trio of escort squadrons.
  • the Valiance (Oberon-class Battleship): Largest warship in the support flotilla, acting as the primary weapons and attack craft platform for the flotilla.
  • the Roaring Purge (Strike Cruiser): This warship is used as the flagship for the Dreadwing, as such it's vaulted armoury contains some of the most powerful weaponry in the chapter. It is deployed when half or more of the Dreadwing fight in a single warzone, and when it unleashes the contents of its vaults whole systems will go quiet, or is otherwise kept with the support fleet and used as a sanctuary for members of the wing.
  • the Adhlacadh (Overlord-class Battlecruiser): This warship is part of the defensive aspect of the support flotilla, using its weapon batteries to defend the vulnerable support vessels.
  • the Toirtiuil (Armed Transport): The largest of their transport vessels, and while all of their transports are on par with a frigate in terms of firepower, they do not have the defensive ability or munitions to fight protracted void combat.

Chapter Relics[]

Like most Unforgiven chapters the Lion's Regents have an extensive collection of ancient relics, far more so than would be expected of a chapter as they were entrusted with vast vaults of relics at their founding and have only added to it in the millennia since.

Armour[]

  • -

Weaponry[]

  • Badeb Katha- An ornate Power sword and the badge of office for the Grand Master of the Ravenwing, a powerful weapon for the bike riding Black Knight veteran.
  • Celchar- A master crafted Power spear it is the symbolic weapon of the Grand Paladin of the chapter, said to be made from the broken remains of a Halberd of Caliban used to kill a Fallen angel in its last attack.
  • Freagarha- Terranic Greatsword of unparalleled craftsmanship that dates to the Unification wars if not older. Chapter legend states that the sword had been created by the hand of the God-Emperor Himself for the very first commanding officer of Unification era legionnaires that would become the first Dark Angels, forged from a far older relic sword broken during the retaking of Holy Terra. It is wielded by the commander of the Grand Knights, the Grand Master's honour guard formation.
  • Headhunter's Blade: It is a one handed short sword with a broad falchion style blade that comes to a point, equally good for chopping as well as stabbing. Currently it is used as an off hand opposite an equally relic longsword, given the Grand Master's skill as a dualist with the pair.
  • Sword of Regency: Master crafted and very ornate power sword passed down to the chapter at their founding, it has long been the badge of office for their Grand Master.

Ground Vehicles[]

  • Beucephalus: Legion era Assault bike with Plasma Talons flanking its front wheel and is covered in ornate iconography as expected of the personal transport of the Grand Master of the Ravenwing.
  • Hatespear: Stormblade super heavy tank passed down from the time of the Legions, it is only deployed at the allowance of the Grand Master of the Ironwing in the most desperate warzones where the chapter is forced to fight things like Titans without proper support.

Chapter Appearance[]

Colours[]

The chapter uses dark green armour with bronze as a secondary colour for their pauldrons and other points of accent, as well as gold for their chest sigil and other iconography. They retain most of the normal colour variations for helmets and specialist armour seen in the Codex though with a few differences. All of their veterans also use the trademark robes of the Unforgiven with the colour used for the trim denoting their wing outside the Inner Circle.

Wing Colourations[]

Instead of bone coloured armour veterans of the Deathwing use normal chapter colours for their armour like the other wings. Each wing does has a unique colour that is used for the inset of their right pauldron, and if they are of veteran status the trim of their robes, to denote status within that wing: bone for the Deathwing, black for the Ravenwing, hazard stripes for the Dreadwing, grey for the Ironwing, yellow for the Stormwing, and blue for the Firewing.

Iconography[]

The chapter iconography consists of the six pointed star of the Hexagrammaton with the head of a roaring lion in the middle. They use unique heraldry similar to the Dark Angels for their company & squad markings. They also make use of Legion era iconography like the original sigils of the wings during that time being put on their right pauldron to denote status within a wing along with the other squad markings.
