Born during the 21st 'Cursed' Founding, the Juggernauts are often referred to as the 'Inviolable Tide' and, true to both their nickname and the name of their Chapter, the warriors of the Endless Crusade are a terrifying and seemingly numberless foe. Obstinate in the extreme, it is near impossible to dissuade a Juggernaut from their chosen course, come death or come the Emperor's personal command, they will never retreat, no sacrifice too great in their quest to eradicate the Master of Mankind's enemies.
Chapter History
The first mention of the Endless Crusade, was during the Age of Apostasy. Though they, like other Chapters ignored the madness that festered on Terra, the Juggernauts still prosecuted the Endless Crusade, taking part during the Imperators Unyielding's rebellion against the larger Imperium. Alongside other Chapters, the Juggernauts were deployed to eradicate the traitorous Astartes, as well as the forces that had coalesced around the charismatic leader of the Chapter. The Juggernauts were deployed in their entirety, they were the anvil of the assault, against them, the traitors would be crushed.
Notable Campaigns
- The War of the Damned (M36) - Perhaps the single largest mobilisation of Chapters born from the 21st Founding, the war that would seem be known as 'the War of the Damned' saw the deployment of the Juggernauts and several other Chapters spawned by project Homo Sapiens Novus, against the traitorous Imperators Unyielding and the forces they had drawn to their cause. Alongside their counter-parts the Heart Rippers, Red Harvest, Lycanthropes and Sons of Antaeus, the Juggernauts were tasked with the destruction of these rebels, who claimed that they and only they, could fulfil the Emperor's design for humanity and that the High Lords of Terra were failures who deserved to be usurped by their betters. As the crusade began to drag on, those loyal to the Imperium as it stood were joined by the enigmatic and nightmarish warriors of the Purifiers.
- Ki'luuth Xenocide (M.41)
- Maiming of the Endless Crusade (M42) - Craftworld Alaitoc, in the name of the fallen Craftworld Ki'luuth, drew the Endless Crusade to themselves. Such an assault on a massive Craftworld, whilst the Chapter was still recovering from the opening of the Great Rift, as tantamount to suicide. Alaitoc manipulated the Juggernauts into the perfect trap, their far seeing rangers and pathfinders harrying the Endless Crusade, keeping them confused and scattered, meanwhile, the Craftworld's fleet carved through the Juggernaut's fleet, with their nimble warriors bleeding the Chapter dry. During this massacre, the Adeptus Custodes, brought fresh Primaris reinforcements to the embattled Juggernauts. However, such relief was of no use and the ever pragmatic guardians of the Emperor simply abandoned the Juggernauts to their fate, seeing the terrible annihilation being wreaked upon them as their own failing due to their zeal and arrogance. In the end, despite Primaris reinforcements, the Juggernauts were left crippled, reduced to a mere shadow of their former power, with Jaggan Markas left with a mere two hundred warriors. For the first time in their history, the Juggernauts were forced on the defensive. Stranded in Imperium Nihilus, the Juggernauts have been forced to fortify themselves to simply survive, lest the Eldar of Alaitoc or machinations of the Warp spell their end.
Chapter Homeworld
Due to their fleet-based nature, the Juggernauts have no homeworld. Instead, they recruit from every world they pass, be they loyalist or recently subjugated, each one must pay the 'Weregeld' a tithe of flesh given to the Endless Crusade in the name of the Emperor. Each recruit often bears totems of their homeworld, usually some memory of how the Juggernauts brought the will of the Emperor to their planet.
Fortress-Monastery
Because of their void-faring nature, the Juggernaut's fortress-monastery is the immense Unstoppable Chariot, the stalwart flagship of the Chapter. The Unstoppable Chariot is a chapel to the history of destruction and subjugation the Juggernauts have carried out. History of the Juggernauts is woven into the very walls of the Unstoppable Chariot, every wound recorded, every death transcribed. It is the home of the massive chaplaincy. Every Chaplain is expected to make a pilgrimage to the Unstoppable Chariot, to renew his faith and will to continue to fight against the nightmares of the universe.
Chapter Organisation
Because of the size fluctuations the Chapter regularly undergoes, the Juggernauts are often on either extreme, over-strength or under-strength. During their zenith, at the time of the assault on Ki'luuth, the Juggernauts numbered roughly five thousand, with each company containing five hundred Marines. The most consistent number of Marines the Juggernauts have is two thousand five hundred. However, when the librarius foretells 'Times of Ruin and Death' Chapter recruitment is expanded massively, thus why before Ki'luuth's destruction, the Juggernauts numbered five thousand. Though, because the battle was so brutal, by the end, the Juggernauts numbered just four hundred. Their streamlined recruitment process often causes a bloat in numbers due to the presence of the 'Unworthy', warriors who could not cope with the gene-seed and, though not outright rejecting it, cannot truly survive as proper Space Marines. Those that aren't killed near immediatly in wars are often turned into combat servitors, in the Juggernauts, everything serves the great war machine of the Endless Crusade.
Officer Ranks
Specialist Ranks
Line Ranks
- The Unworthy - Those whose bodies did not reject the gene-seed, but could not properly manage the changes it brought. These miserable, pained souls, are known as the Unworthy. Used as little more than suicide units or meatshields, the Unworthy are regarded as disgusting failures by their masters, beings so wretched, the only course for them, is to die to advance the Endless Crusade. To a battle-brother of the Juggernauts, the lives of the Unworthy have no value, if one was injured a Marine may simply smash him aside or pick him up to use as a human shield.
Order of Battle
Headquarters
- Custodian of the Endless Crusade - The Chapter Master of the Juggernauts. Those who hold this rank have the herculean responsibility of directing the huge monolith that is the Juggernaut Chapter. Given the astounding speed with which their numbers fluctuate, from immense to near extinct, the Custodian must be zealous, but also bound by pragmatism, to them falls the difficult duty of controlling their brother's impulse to relentless conquer the stars. Even as Harbingers are sent to spread across the stars, the Custodian of the Endless Crusade must almost be able to rally them with his will.
- Harbinger - Captains of the Juggernauts. Harbingers are the ones who forge the Endless Crusade. Where the Custodian directs, the Harbingers make that will manifest.
Companies
- 5th Company 'the Bloody Handed'- The 5th Company of the Chapter, is infamous, considered cursed by their Battle-Brothers due to the Chaos Marines now calling themselves the World Breakers, being drawn from their number. Those of the 5th show a particular predilection towards bloodlust and destructive rage, even compared to the usual warriors of the Chapter. Because of this, they are often deployed in the most brutal of battle-grounds, into the thickest fighting, to them casualties matter little, only the destruction of the enemy does. Thus, the Bloody Handed Company are a scarred and savage lot, bionics to repair of the horrific wounds they suffer are common-place amongst them, for they would think little of blasting off an arm if it would let them kill more enemies.
Chapter Recruitment
Recruitment into the Juggernauts is a simple affair. Through whatever world they pass they demand a 'Weregeld', a tithe to be paid towards establishing humanity's supremacy, to exterminate all that would challenge that. Those aspirants taken as payment by the Juggernauts are brought to the gladiatorial pits of the Unstoppable Chariot, and split into teams, where they must fight each other to the death, one team after another. These endurance trials weed out those deemed worthy. These exhausted survivors, are then allowed to rest, before being brought back to the gladiatorial pits and being made to battle a single potential battle-brother. Though such a fight is impossible, those who show courage and willpower to continue to try and battle against a Marine are accepted as a brother of the Chapter.
Given the horrifying casualty rates and high gene-seed acceptance rate, the transition from Scout Marine to full battle-brother is relatively quick compared to other Marines. As an aspirant is implanted with the organs, they are repeatedly tested with trials of endurance, duels with envenomed blades and the like. A Juggernaut must be dulled to pain, so that no matter what he faces, the Endless Crusade continues.
Chapter Beliefs
To the Juggernauts, the Great Crusade never ended, despite the horrific betrayal of Horus, the Imperium's task is to still expand the glorious reach of mankind. Thus a core tenant of the Chapter's beliefs is known as the 'Endless Crusade', a constant war of expansion, to bring the Emperor's light to every corner of existence. Though the Juggeranuts share the common belief amongst Space Marines that, whilst not a god, the Master of Mankind is the apex of humanity, they revere him with a fanatical zeal that borders on deification. To the Juggernauts, the fact that every star in the sky is not ruled by the Emperor is near enough heresy. All must be conquered in his name, the Imperial maxim 'No Respite, no mercy, only war.' is at the core of the Juggernaut's beliefs. As long as even a single being does not hail the Lord of Terra, the Chapter cannot rest.
Chapter Gene-Seed
Because practically all records of the 21st Founding have been destroyed, there is very little currently known about the genetic history of the forces of the Endless Crusade. The closest to concrete evidence regarding their heritage is a listing of ‘Chimeric’. Due to the vagueness of this term, few truly know what this means, however, those more learned believe it to indicate the Juggernauts were born through the combination of Primarch genes, those who subscribe to this theory believe that the Endless Crusade are half-breed Imperial Fists, with the addition of their hated rivals, the Iron Warriors. Given the history both Chapters have, as well as the IVth Legion's status as traitors, such beliefs are considered heretical.
Given that they were created during the Cursed Founding, the Juggernauts are a welcome departure from the norm in that, their gene-seed seems not to come with horrific mental instabilities (their relentless, near suicidal stubbornness not withstanding) They do however, have a tendency towards almost masochistic inflexibility, an example of this is their nightmarish endurance for pain; during the destruction of the Imperators Unyielding, the Chapter Master of Nahrt Marok continued to attack the traitorous Chapter Master of the Imperators, even whilst being virtually sawn in half by massed bolter-fire. However, given their medical practices of taking as many aspirants as possible, whilst rejection rates are low, the speed with which aspirants are implanted can take a horrific toll, though implantation is stream-lined it has created a caste of agonised warriors whose bodies cannot cope with the changes, seen as little more than the first wave of a Juggernaut assault.
Genetic Flaws
Supporting the chimeric theory, the Juggernauts show signs of the flaws both their apparent progenitors have. Much like the Imperial Fists, the Juggernauts' sus-an membrane is absent and, like the Iron Warriors, with age, the ossmodula can occasionally cause bone deformation. Whilst also a benefit, the near mathematical thinking, combined with the famed stubbornness of Dorn's sons can, quite often result in brutal, bull-headed behaviour. As with virtually all Chapters of the 21st, the Juggernauts seem to be cursed with ill fortune, whilst not to the extent of the Lamenters, the Juggernauts seem almost doomed to constantly suffer horrendous casualties.
Combat Doctrine
Much like their attitude, and true to their name, the Juggernauts are an unstoppable, blunt force. In a manner disturbingly similar the Legion of Perturabo, the Juggernauts approach war with an almost mathematical application of brute strength to key areas. Shattering warzones with relentless artillery, then deploying tide after tide of furious marines, each one willing to ignore even the most appalling of injuries to get to grips with their foes. Because, like the Black Templars, the Juggernauts see themselves as still continuing the Great Crusade, they numbers are greatly inflated compared to other Chapters. Given their brutal tactical doctrine and near suicidal and masochistic stubbornness, these numbers are perhaps the only reason the Juggernauts have survived the perils of their birth.
An assault by the Juggernauts usually begins with a brutal, earth-shattering bombardment, blasting apart the soon-to-be battlefield. Soon, the battlefield is filled with warriors of the Endless Crusade, each deployed to apply pressure to key points of the battlefield. Though their casualties may be appalling, the sheer mass of firepower the Juggernauts are able to unleash, combined with their unrelenting nature is truly terrifying. Given their rather brutish practice of rapidly implanting the organs into aspirants, which can result in large numbers of pain-wracked rejects, dying from the gene-seed wrought changes, the Juggernauts wield these failing warriors as a first wave in assaults. Those that survive battles are often transformed into servitors, or given extensive cybernetic reconstruction, so that they may still serve the Juggernauts. Such warriors usually live short, pain-filled lives.
Deathwatch Service
The Juggernauts rarely send battle-brothers to the Deathwatch, given the astounding casualties they regularly take during their crusades. Occasionally though, Marines will be seconded from the Endless Crusade, to serve in the Deathwatch. True to their name, Juggernauts serve with an unstoppable zeal and stunning endurance. Battle-brothers sent to serve in the Death-Watch are generally the oddities amongst their Chapter; whilst the majority of Juggernauts show a propensity towards straight-forward solutions, those serving the long watch are the lateral thinkers, those who stray from the effective blunt-force approach favoured by the Chapter. Though bizarre thinkers by the Juggernauts standards, these Marines still maintain the boundless stubbornness of their far off brothers.
Notable Members
- Custodian Jaggan Markas - The current Custodian of the Endless Crusade (Chapter Master) of the Juggernauts, Jaggan Markas is a massive and relentless warrior. Imposing, even for an Astartes, Jaggan first rose to prominence during the Ki'luuth Xenocide. After the destruction of the violent craftworld, Jaggan was discovered, wounded into a violent, instinctual haze, slaughtering his way through a host of xenos, amidst a bloody field dead Marines and slaughtered Eldar. After the manipulations of Craftworld Alaitoc, it was Jaggan who made the agonising choice to endure, to fortify themselves and rebuild themselves, rather than simply die out.
- Custodian Kaiyn Nahrt (KIA) - The first ever Custodian of the Endless Crusade, Kaiyn took part in the war against the Imperators Unyielding during the Age of Apostasy. A savage and relentless warrior, Nahrt was killed in a duel against the self-styled 'Warmaster' of the treacherous Astartes, being led into a trap by him then being sawn in half by massed bolter fire from the treasonous Imperators. A grim, brutal warrior, Kaiyn was a terrifying example of the viciously mathematical approach to war that the Juggernauts excelled at. Under the relentless bombardment of whirlwind artillery, Kaiyn and his men would march, callously spending the lives of their battle-brothers like currency to overcome their enemies. Though, to those beyond the Chapter, he was seen as a disturbingly cold warrior, amongst the Juggernauts, he is seen as their greatest warrior, unerring and willing to sacrifice everything, even his own life, in the execution of the Endless Crusade.
- Harbinger Odisha
Chapter Fleet
- Unstoppable Chariot (Ironclad-class Battle Barge) - An immense vessel, the Unstoppable Chariot is the flagship and, in effect, the Chapter's Fortress-Monastery. Like the Marines it serves, this ancient ship is blunt and stalwart, perfectly designed for brutal and destructive actions. Though slower than other ships of its type, the Unstoppable Chariot also shows increased endurance, substituting manoeuvrability for sheer staying power.
- Blessed Invader (Warspite-class Battle Barge) Where the Unstoppable Chariot serves as both the flagship and Fortress-Monastery of the Juggernauts, the Blessed Invader's purpose is simple and obvious. A destructive weapon of war, the Blessed Invader is armed with huge spikes of lance weaponry and countless torpedo bays.
Chapter Relic
- The Hand of Doom - A massive power fist, crafted with veins of metal from the five original worlds where the Juggernauts were deployed during their infancy, the Hand of Doom is a reminder of their brutal origins and their belief that all must follow the law of Terra, or be destroyed. Wielded by the Custodian of the Endless Crusade, the Hand of Doom is a symbol of the Chapter's crushing might.
Chapter Appearance
Chapter Colours
The Juggernauts have a primarily two-tone colour scheme; the backpack exhausts, pauldron trim, arms, upper legs and feet are a dark iron grey. Their helmets, backpacks, pauldron insets, and lower legs are a bright yellow. As well as their usual colours, battle-brothers of the Juggernauts may also decorate their armour with totems of their homeworld. Given the range of their recruiting worlds, these can vary wildly. Like many other Chapters, the Juggernauts make use of the standard markings for their Marines. Often, veterans bear artwork depicting the Endless Crusade inscribed on their armour.
Chapter Badge
The Juggernauts wear a stylised rendition of the Endless Crusade, a horse-pulled, flame-wreathed chariot roaring through the skies, just as the Chapter themselves carve a path through the stars.
Relations
Allies
- Adeptus Ministorum - Despite doctrinal disagreements of the God-Emperor of Man's status as either the greatest man or a god, the Ecclesiarchy sees the zeal and unrelenting faith that the Juggernauts have in their purpose as a sign of the Emperor's favour. As both believe in the supremacy of humanity, they made for natural allies, both willing and able to sacrifice everything to expand the Imperium. As they ride throughout the galaxy, the Juggernauts often rest on shrine worlds of the Ministorum, honoured guests who would devastate planets for their non-belief.
- Death Korps of Krieg - Given their shared affinity for brutal, uncompromising assaults, it is little surprise that the Death Korps of Krieg earned the respect of the Endless Crusade.
Enemies
- Craftworld Alaitoc - Whilst the Eldar of Biel-Tan are spectacularly scornful of any not of their kind and have a notorious hatred of the Imperium , after the extermination of Craftworld Ki'luuth by the Juggernauts, the warriors of the Endless Crusade have earned the xenos' disgust and hatred. Through the machinations of the Enochian Sect of the Inquisition, the Eldar of Alaitoc were able to enact some vengeance on the Juggernauts, absolutely decimating their Chapter, even after the arrival of the Adeptus Custodes with Primaris reinforcements, leaving the Juggernauts with a mere two hundred battle-brothers remaining.
- World Breakers - These despised traitors are the renegade elements of the 5th Company, led by former Harbinger, now daemon prince of Chaos Undivided; Lord Odisha. Given some of the most horrid and brutal deployments in the Chapter those who followed the Harbinger who would call himself the 'True Juggernaut' quickly found their zeal surpassed by bloodlust and enjoyment for the devastation the Endless Crusade brought. Now free from the shackles of the Imperium, the World Breakers are slaves to their own destructive impulses, shattering worlds purely for their own brutal delight, bound to the ruinous powers that raised their leader to his current state as an avatar of destruction, worshipped by his minions.
