The Imperatoris Executoris, known in Low Gothic as the "Emperor's Executioners," are a fleet-based Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes born of the Ultima Founding. Forged in the fires of desperate warzones during the early days of the Indomitus Crusade, they were created with a rare and volatile chimeric gene-seed, comprising strands from the Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Blood Angels. This unique genetic heritage grants the Chapter a potent blend of martial instincts—combining the Blood Angels' aggression, the Dark Angels' grim tenacity, and the Space Wolves' feral resilience. Yet, this same hybrid lineage makes their genetic purity difficult to categorize, and they remain the subject of suspicion and scrutiny by the Inquisition and Magos Biologis alike.

Unbound to any singular homeworld, the Imperatoris Executoris operate as a fleet-based Chapter with a highly decentralized command structure, their companies often operating as autonomous strike groups across the Imperium Nihilus and its bordering systems. Their battlefield doctrine is characterized by overwhelming direct assaults, often employing heavily armored infantry supported by mechanized spearheads, orbital drops, and rapid-response air units.

They are never seen in battle without the presence of the 23rd Ice Rangers, an elite Astra Militarum regiment from whom the Chapter draws all its neophytes. This enduring bond - rare among Space Marine Chapters - has shaped both forces into a unified war machine, with shared rites, warcraft traditions, and a mutual warrior brotherhood that transcends the usual gap between Astartes and mortal soldiery.

Chapter History[]

The Imperatoris Executoris (or "Emperor's Executioners" in Low Gothic) are an Ultima Founding Space Marine Chapter. The Chapter has a Chimeric Gene-seed, made of Space Wolves, Dark Angels, and Blood Angels Gene-Seed. A Fleet-Based Chapter, operating with a very decentralized structure with a tendency towards heavily armored infantry, airborne, and armored units deploying in direct assaults. Always co-deploying with the 23rd Ice Rangers, an imperial guard regiment, as the chapter recruits only from the regiment.

Notable Campaigns[]

  • Awakening (999.M41-010.M42) - Waking from Cryo-Pods deep within the Battle Barge, which would later be known as the Holy Wrath, the ship's machine spirit came to life, awakening from its slumber. Taking to the bridge, the chapter would find that they had been in a deep space orbit around the Varnier System. Receiving a distress signal from the planet, the chapter mobilized to aid the system, aiming to make it their new home system. After fighting a brutal decade-long war, they would retreat, enacting an exterminatus, taking a few STCs, the surviving members of the system's guard regiment, and whatever resources they could. Having taken extreme casualties, leaving the Chapter at roughly 250 Astartes, Ulrick Medicus would take the command as the 2nd Chapter Master. Shortly after escaping the Varnier system, the chapter's new Chief Liberian, Cassius Storm Claw, would discover four revelations when reviewing the chapter's records and urgent communications. First, the galaxy had been ripped in half by the Citrix Malidicum. Second, the Primarch Roboute Guilliman has returned. Third, the chapter's gene-seed is a chimeric blend of Russ, the Lion, and Sanguinius. Fourth, they had been summoned to Red Tear to meet with Lord Commander, now Lord Regent Dante of the Blood Angels. Ulrick, alongside the other surviving officers of the chapter, would make extreme choices to preserve the chapter. The chapter would forsake its old name and heraldry, adopting the name Imperatoris Executoris alongside new heraldry, and wear black armor due to their heretical nature. Once organized, the Imperatoris Executoris would set out for the Red Tear alongside the survivors of Varnier who had sworn to forever serve the chapter.

Fortress-Monastery[]

Starfort Asgard – The Executioner’s Bastion

  • Classification: Star Fort
  • Designation: Asgard
  • Commander: High Fleet Lord Nashar Bloodstone of the 9523rd Battle Fleet
  • Primary Role: Mobile Fortress Monastery, Command Nexus, Strategic Anchor of the Chapter Fleet
  • Secondary Roles: Shipyard, Reclusiam, Librarius Archive, Forge-Temple, Apothecarium Vault

Overview

Asgard is not merely a fortress; it is the throne of judgment from which the Imperatoris Executoris launches divine retribution. Shaped like a twelve-pointed star and layered in five concentric strata of increasing density and firepower, Asgard resembles an executioner’s sigil writ across the void. It serves as the spiritual, strategic, and logistical heart of the Chapter, a bastion where doctrine is forged as fiercely as blades.

Floating in the void like a slumbering god-beast, Asgard stands as a monument to the chapter’s grim creed: "We do not hold ground. We break it, bleed it, and burn it until no traitor may take root again."

Chapter Organisation[]

Officer Ranks[]

Specialist Ranks[]

Unlike most chapters, The Imperatoris Executoris does not differentiate between specialist ranks and command ranks. Roughly half of the command officers within the chapter also hold a specialist rank.

Forge Lord: The Forge Lords are the Chapter's equivalent of Techmarines. Sent off for training at Mars with the Adeptus Mechanicus, like all Techmarines, the Forge Lords maintain the Chapter's equipment and forge the Chapter's wargear. In addition, Forge Lords act as guardians and caretakers of the chapter's relics and armory.

Death Lord: Death Lords are a unique officer class within the Chapter. A combination of the roles of Chaplain and Apothecary found in Codex-compliant Chapters, the Death Lord administers to the physical and mental well-being of the Chapter's warriors and also chooses the Young Ones for the Chapter from among the members of the 23rd Ice Rangers.

Tempestas Lords: Tempestas Lords are the Chapter equivalent to Librarians, acting as caretakers and guards of the chapter's history and customs. The Imperatoris Executoris generally views Psychers quite positively. Seen as blessed by the Emperor and channeling his power, Tempestas Lords are well respected.

Herald: Heralds are the Chapter equivalent of Ancients, carriers of clan and order colors. Being a Herald is seen as one of the greatest burdens. When a clan or Order is first stood up, that Clan/Order holds a Heralds Challenge, all who wish to carry the Clan/Order Colors compete in honor duels, razing bits of compete in honor duels with the undefeated Astartes becoming the Herald. From then on, when a Herald falls in battle, the nearest Brother will take up the Colors before they can fall, becoming the new Clan/Order Herald.

Line Ranks[]

High Lord Executioner: Chapter Master and commander of the 1st Order

Lord Executioner: The Captain equivalent that commands one of the 12 Orders. Unique to the Imperatoris Executoris, instead of having two Command Executioners (Lieutenant equivalent), the Imperatoris Executoris fields one per Clan.

Command Executioner: A Command Executioner is the Imperatoris Executoris Officer who is the equivalent of a standard Space Marine Lieutenant. Each Command Executioner leads a Clan under the direction and mentorship of their Lord Executioner.

Non-Astartes Ranks[]

High Fleet Lord: The chapter's fleet is commanded by the Lord Admiral of the 9523rd Battle Fleet. The High Fleet Lord commands Starfort Asgard.

Fleet Lord: Each Order's fleet is commanded by a Fleet Lord of the 9523rd Battle Fleet.

Master of Vassals: A Non-Astartes Officer dedicated to the management of the Chapter's vessels, acting as the primary emissary of the Chapter to other Non-Astartes Imperium factions.

Castilian of the 23rd Ice Rangers: As the Highest Officer of the 23rd Ice Rangers, the Castilian dictates doctrine and commands the regiment's forces. The greatest challenge of the office is balancing the greater needs of the crusade and the needs of Imperatoris Executoris to which the regiment is a vassal.

Specialist Units & Formations[]

Hosts[]

Hosts are specialized organizations within the Imperatoris Executoris, existing across orders. Each Host bears a unique responsibility within the chapter. There are X Hosts. Each Host alters the chapter colors to some degree, except the Executioner Host.

Executioner[]

The largest and most broad of the Hosts, composed of the chapters' Veterans who were not called to the Specialized Ranks.

Annihilator[]

Those who belong to the Annihilator Host are responsible for carrying out missions that require complete destruction. Using volkite, melta, plasma, and radiation weapons to leave no remnants of the enemy and leave the area uninhabitable. Tasked with carrying out the least honorable of actions. When a Hive City falls to Dark Gods or Xenos infiltration, they must be purged. There is no honor to be found in the genocide of one's fallen people.

Tome Guard[]

Those of the Tome Guard are the martial might of the Tempest Lords. Honor guard to Tempest Lords and the manpower behind the Librarius. Once inducted into the Tome Guard, an oath is sworn to guard the chapter's archives, Relics, Dreadnoughts, and the recovery of the chapter's wargear.

Void[]

Those of the Void host have sworn to defend the halls of the chapter fleet. Giving up the glory of assaulting the enemy to take on the sacred duty of guarding the chapter's home. Members of the Void Host leave their orders and rotate throughout the chapter fleet. Spending a decade or two at a ship before rotating to the next ship.

Dread[]

Brothers who are drawn to a slow, steady, destructive advance, making use of tanks and heavy armor. Considered the honorable side of the chapters ranged forces. While the Annihilator Host is tasked with genocide, the Dread Host marches forward as the unbreakable rear line of the chapter.

Azure Guard[]

The Azure Guard is the chapter's Honor Guard. Acting primarily as guard to the chapter's Highest officers, Astartes or not. Induction to the Guard requires participation in a ritual tournament held by the Guard. While victory in the tournament helps, it does not guarantee induction to the Azure Guard. Only those who have proven themselves to the current Brothers of the Guard will be chosen. The Azure Guard is considered a branch of the Executioner Host.

Marú Trócaireach[]

Those who execute the members who fall to the Rage of Mixed Blood. These Death Lords have taken a solemn oath to bestow their brothers the Emperor's mercy. Clad in white armor and black robes, those of the Marú Trócaireach Host act as guard to the inner sanctum of the Apothecaris. Marking their armor with Black Knotwork, not for glory but as penance for each time they have had to uphold their oath. The Marú Trócaireach wield Marú Axes, ceremonial power Axes forged specialty for each member of the host. None of the Marú Trócaireach may hold any rank; they are Death Lords who have taken a sacred and scarring oath.

The High Council[]

The High Council, the chapter's governing body, for more than one Order to be dedicated to a campaign, an appeal must be made to the Council. While primarily made of Lord Executioners, the masters of the specialized ranks alongside the highest unaugmented officers sit on the council as well. When a Lord executioner falls, it is the High Council that elevates the next brother to the rank. The minimum clan requirements were placed on the Orders by the High Council.

Order of Battle[]

The Imperatoris Executoris do not abide by the structures laid out in the Codex Astartes, preferring to organize themselves into 12 Orders, with each Order operating freely, varying in strength and compensation. Every Order is composed of at least four Clans, one for each type of Brotherhood. Each Lord Executioner decides the number and type of Clans that comprise each Order and is not subject to oversight. Each Order has all the needed ships and resources to pursue any campaign.

1st Order “Holy Executioners”
Imperatoris Executoris 1st order Livery
2nd Order “Iron Fangs” 3rd Order "Blood Spears" 4th Order "Winged Wolves" 5th Order "Void Bears" 6th Order "Blizzard Wolver"
7th Order "Chain Wolves" 8th Order "Storm Claws" 9th Order "Void Hammers" 10th Order "Emerald Shields" 11th Order "Black Wolves" 12th Order "Golden Axes"

Clans[]

They are the smallest independently deployable unit within the chapter. Each Clan has its unique heraldry that is displayed on the left knee, right shoulder pad, and possibly right shoulder shield. With every clan having its own Herald. There are six types of clans: Headquarters, Assault, Scout, Dread, Executioner, and Auxiliary.  Headquarters Clans are made of the Orders Executioner Lord, his Honor Guard, and Non-Astartes Officers. Only one Headquarters Clan is a part of each Order. Assault Clans are manned by the young, inexperienced brothers. Over time, each brotherhood will find its way of war and be reassigned to another clan. Scout clans are made up of Brotherhoods that have dedicated themselves to the mastery of stealth and reconnaissance. Dead clans are composed of Brotherhoods that dedicate themselves to the use of heavy armor and tanks. Orders one or two Annihilator Brotherhoods would be found in a dread clan. Executioner Clans are the veterans of the Order, wielding the relics of the Order and hunting the commanders of the enemy forces. Auxiliary clans are made of Tested Ones and non-Astartes officers of the Order. Except for the headquarters Clan, all clans are commanded by a Command Executioner.

Combat Doctrine[]

Decentralized Command. The Imperatoris Executoris structure their chapter around a decentralized command to an extreme degree. Each Order has the resources needed to act independently from the rest of the chapter. A Clan can conduct an offensive on its own for months and in some cases a year without a need for resupply. The key downside to this strategy is that the loss of a single ship is a significant blow to the respective Order.

The Imperatoris Executoris has two key styles that dictate actual combat, melee, and heavy armor. The Imperatoris Executoris uses Gravis and Terminator armor much more than most Chapters. Most Orders build their strategies and tactics around an unyielding force of heavy armored melee combatants. Although some Orders may be built around ranged combat, the use of heavy armor and tanks is unrivaled within the Chapter, but there are always exceptions. The 11th Order builds around light gorilla warfare, with the heavy use of Phobos armor.

Chapter Culture & Beliefs[]

View of the Emperor[]

The Imperatoris Executoris believes the Emperor to be a God, but does not believe he was always a God. Believing he ascended to godhood when he slew Horus and ascended to the golden throne. With this, the Imperatoris Executoris are extremely fanatical, believing they are the Emperor's chosen executioner. Divinely ordained to bring his justice down on the necks of the Heretic, Traitor, and Xenos.

Chapter Recruitment[]

Rites of Ascension[]

The initial selection of candidates to become new brothers of the chapter is conducted on the battlefield. As the Imperatoris Executoris fight alongside the 23rd Ice Rangers, any Brother may select from the young soldiers of the 23rd Ice Rangers, citing an act of valor in battle.

The Young Ones will go through several tournaments where they fight each other, beasts, and xenos. After each tournament, the surviving Young Ones will have a new organ implanted. Once all 21 organs have been implanted, the Young Ones will be promoted to Tested Ones and sent to an Order for training. Once they prove themselves in battle, they will be made a full Brother of the Chapter.

Chapter Gene-Seed[]

Due to having a chimeric gene-seed, the Imperatoris Executoris vary quite a degree in their appearance. Each Astartes tends to look like one of the three Primarchs the chapter descends from. In addition, they have a unique gene mutation called the Rage of Mixed Blood, which gives great strength takes a great toll on the chapter.

Genetic Flaws[]

Rage of Mixed Blood[]

The Imperatoris Executoris have an extreme gene flaw, while granting significant strength and regeneration, roughly 50% of Marines are either culled or die on their own due to the flaw. This gene flaw has three stages: Vengeful Rage, Contained Fury, and Holy Wrath.

Vengeful Rage

As a general rule, for the flaw to be triggered, a Brother of the chapter must witness a Brother's death. The more sudden and unexpected the death, the more likely the flaw will trigger. During this stage of the flaw, a Brother will be consumed by a blind rage. Striking out at anyone perceived as an enemy. After a day or two, the brother will fall into exhaustion. He will be taken in by the Death Lords of the chapter. Through their rights, the brother will be brought into the second stage.

Contained Fury

The second stage of the flaw is a tenuous time. A Brother will be balancing the rage of his gene-seed and the martial principles of the chapter. The Brother will continue undergoing rights with the Death Lords, often in groups. During this stage, a Brother will often fall back to the first stage. Only when a brother has gained mastery of his rage will he ascend to Holy Wrath. But not all ascend; some become trapped in the back and forth of blind range on one side and barely Contained Fury. Those who are unable to ascend to Holy Wrath generally remain in assault clans till they truly fall to the Vengeful Range and die in battle or are culled by the Death Lords.

Holy Wrath

The Third Stage, “Holy Wrath,” is the mastery of the Rage of Mixed Blood. A brother has gained true and complete control of their rage, forging it into a weapon of a true Executioner. Holy Wrath is a stoic controlled state of rage that a Brother can call on as needed. The Brothers who ascend to this stage generally gain a more stoic and calm personality. They stand in the eye of the storm, only stepping into the violent winds of rage when needed.

Chapter Armory[]

The Imperatoris Executoris have a higher than average amount of Gravis pattern Mark X power armor, Repulsor Executioners, Heresy era Predators, and Heresy Era Dreadnoughts. On the other hand, there are significantly lower than average amounts of Phobos pattern Mark X power armor and land speeders. The vast majority of the chapters' Phobos pattern Mark X power armor is fielded by the 11th Order, the Black Wolves. In the case of Tacticas Pattern Mark X power armor, the Imperatoris Executoris reinforces the armor with additional Ceramite.

Rare Patterns of Wargear[]

  • Varnier Pattern Eviscerators
    • Found on Varneir, the Imperatoris Executoris would take those they found and share the STC with all other Astartes they encountered, alongside sharing it with any Machanicus forces they encountered.
    • This Pattern of Eviscerator has become the standard throughout the chapter.
  • Varnier Pattern Bolter

Chapter Badge[]

The chapter Badge of the Imperatoris Executoris is about a Metallic Azure three-headed Wolf in front of a Silversword.

Honour Badges[]

Among the Imperatoris Executoris' traditional honor badge skulls, scrolls, Aquilas, service studs, and or any other Codex Astartes-approved badges are not commonplace, except Laurel wreaths. Those Brother-Hoods that are elevated to Executioners will don golden laurel wreaths on their helms. In the Imperatoris Executoris, the preferred honor badges consist of Pelts, Skulls, Runes, spiked heads of the executed, and Knotwork art. Knotwork art is not something any Imperatoris Executoris can simply paint or engrave onto their armor; they must be awarded the right to mark their armor by either their Command Executioner or Lord Executioner. The Imperatoris Executoris uses knotwork art as badges for achieving a specific type or number of kills.

Color of Knotwork meaning[]

  • White: Single-handedly slaying 100 enemy combatants
  • Green: Single-handedly destroying an enemy ground vehicle
  • Yellow: Single-handedly destroying an enemy Air vehicle
