The Hochmeister are a Semi-Codex adherent Space Marine Chapter. Founded during the 7th Founding with success. They possess even for an Astartes an exceptional robust body and defence against the Chaos. Rumours surround them being not a classic Space Marines Chapter. During an investigation, the Inquisition and the Ordo Theoreticus found reasons to believe in a very mixed gene-seed. That would explain a quite high mutation rate. Most are just minor or can be prevented. But the transformation of somebody in a Space Marine of this chapter needs even more experienced hands than in another chapter. Regardless of the rumours, they are, for their treatment of civilians and character, quite popula

History

Founding

The Hochmeister were founded in the 7th Founding as a tactical reserve. Although which Chapter was their predecessors is unknown - or predecessors. In fact, they have a chemeric Gene-Seed. Most parts of their Gene-Seed came from the venerable Ultramarines. The second biggest Geneseed donator were the Ultramarines with [classified] percent. However there are [classified] percent from the following Chapters: [classified].

Aftermath of the Great Howling

This was the first time the chapter was operating. They were ordered to retake dozens of planets on which the population had gone mad. The few survivors of the mad times on the planet had often needed mercy killings. The clearing of Hun VI was the first battle of the chapter. All companies fought on Hun VI and had to eliminate the entire population, who showed horrible mutations. When this gruelling task was finished, many battle-brothers had wished for a more honourable mission or at least one where they could save lives and not commit mercy killings; they rushed through the subsector of Hun VI and cleared other affected planets, often encountering chaos forces or Ork tribes.

The next 250 years were marked by the missions for squad-sized task forces or Space Hulk clearings, later demanded the most victims. But this time ended with the Black Crusades who happened more frequently or Chapter wide operations against the Dark Eldar and Chaos Space Marines.

Tau Chaos Rebellion

The most notable event happened in 897.M41 and was uncreatively called Chaos Tau Rebellion on the Tau Sept Ti`Hal when reports came in of Tau pirate fleets attacking imperial vessels, with vessels who were strangely modified in a maner untypical of Taus. A Strike Force was sent out to scout the area searching for them. In the System of Raremir dedected the Strike Force finally Tau vessels, however instead of meeting the Tau pirates they found vessels from the Farsight Enclave. Both sides were in fact looking for the same group of Tau however saw eachother as an enemy and wanted to enage the other. A battle errupted but not between them, instead both sides were suddenly under fire by the pirates both sides hunted. Naval combat reached spread in the combat and an unspoken alliance was formed for the tome of the battle. Destroying the enemy brought instead of a victory over the pirates for both side a new problem. Those piratical Tau were corrupted by Chaos equipped with vessels who could only be made by a Sept and not in private shipyards. Ordo Xenos Inquisitor Buchshammer who accompanied the Hochmeister established "diplomatic" contact between both sides. Farsight Forces identified in the wrecks symbols - although corrupted - of the Ti`Hal Sept, but their medics were buzzled by the mutations on the bodies of their corrupted kind and showed naivity dangerous close to idiocy when handling the wreckage and captured objects. In a private talk with the fleet admiral exchanged the commanding Hochmeister the location of the Chaos Tau Sept for critical information about Chaos and chaos corrupting with the Xenos.

Jumping into the Tau Sept meet the Hochmeister the Farsight Enclave again, this time lead by Commander Farsight himself who saw the situation as a internal affair of the Tau without the need of the Imperium who had revealed its brutality and critical information about the Chaos corruption. Cooperation was made even more difficult when it was made clear that both sides had different ideas how to fight the war with the Hochmeister favouring a total purge of the Sept. The coordinated strategy was although all fast decided: Air cast fighters would suppress the enemy airforce while all forces landed on the planet and operated mostly seperated.

On Ti`Hal`s surface erupted a lightning war. Farshight forces outmaneuvred the forces of their corrupted kind, who used mass assaults and only a few classical Tau tactics. Hochmeister forces tore through the enemy fortresses and ruined cities, butchering their weak enemies in meele combat. In the cities decorated with corpes of uncorrupted Taus found both forces finally the source of the corruption: the Disciples of Death a Chaos Warband of Chaos Marines who made their home in the Sept. Brutal fighting ensured that the Chaos forces were eliminated - at least the part of the Warband stationed on the Sept.

After the battle contacted the forces each other. What Chapter Master of the Hochmeister Legat McLean and Commander Farsight discussed is kept hidden in inquisitoral archievs and in the Klauenburg. It is most likely that both also talked about the further danger of Chaos Tau.

Actions since M41.

The time between 200.M41 and 100.M42 brought the Chapter interesting and versatile missions and battles. Enemy ranged from the Plague Marines over the Taus to High Fleet Leviathan. Missions ranged from Guerilla campagnes, spearhead attacks against armoured enemies, commando actions, Genestealer hunts and joint-campaigns with many different Chapters, Regiments, Organisations and in times even with Xenos.

The Chapters strength fluctuated between 500 to 900 times and times again. Primaris reinforcements - 176 Primaris Marines - reached them in 009.M42 and a second wave of 218 came seven years later. Massive ressources were mobilized by Legate McLean to allow the transformation of as much Firstborn Space Marines in Rubicon Marines, which took five years and costed 67 Hochmeister their lives and a Hochmeister had to be transfered into a Dreagnouth.

Notable Campaigns and Battles

  • Battle of Habitat H34 (353.M37): During the Third Internal Crusade (occupation and clearing from lawless areas and areas with little control) the 1st company attacked Habitat H34 (a populated civilian starbase) which was specialized on fuel and fighter production. Prior to the attack, a crime syndicate had conquered it. Most government members were as soon as possible executed. The plundering of the starbase lasted a week and most of the survivors were used as slaves and the remaining survivors were sold as slaves to some Rogue Traders. During the attack, the Astartes were supported by the civilians and reminders of the PDF. Boarding-Torpedos brought boarding parties secretly to the landing zones. The boarding parties staged "accidents" before revealing themself.
  • War for Turinan (unknown.M37): The chapter supported several Grey Knight kill-teams during the battle for Hive Anatan IX. An Aeldari Craftworld became victim of a chaos uprising. Most of the Eldars became followers of Slaanesh, who ironically caused nearly the end of the Eldar species when she was born as a result of the decadence of the Eldar Empire. The conflict would have stayed at in the void if the Chaos Eldar hadn`t nearly crashed the Craftworld into Hive Anatan IX and so spreading the conflict and the corruption into the Hive. Anatan IX had itself a Chaos uprising and while being a Slaanesh cult who worship her too like the Chaos Eldars, they learnt that they liked the idea of having a monopoly in matters of being a planetary Slaanesh cult. As a way to defend this monopoly, they started attacking the Chaos Eldars who, some may even say who had learned the benefits of themself, started attacking the cult too. In the next three months, all sides took heavy loses and the imperials made a temporal alliance with the Eldars. In the end, the chaos forces were destroyed but at the cost of the Aeldari and the half of the task force.
  • Tau Chaos Rebellion (897.M41): In a rare alliance with the Farsight Enclave the Hochmeister confronted a chaos Tau Sept called Ti´Hal. Tau have normally nearly no psychic capabilities but still can be corrupted. A Chaos Warband was able to corrupt an Ethernal who was able to corrupt many more Taus. After some years the half of the Tau Sept was corrupted and rebelled. The Hochmeisters were only dragged into this conflict when the corrupted Tau Sept send out pirates attacking imperial vessels and vessels from the Farsight Enclave. Both task forces from each side meet at the Raremir System. If the Chaos Taus hadn`t arrived at the system, then both sides would have started a battle between each other. The real reason for the forming of an alliance instead of a non-aggression pact and limited information trade agreement, which was "more traditional", were the Chaos Warband Disciples of Death who had corrupted the Eternal and copied parts of the Tau strategy. The war was marked by long and extensive skirmishes and short sieges. The Librarians were able to learn the warfare of the Tau, which proved essential in the following wars against the Taus.
  • War on Euphrites (Unknown Date.M38): Three Companies of Hochmeister helped the civilian population and PDF in a 12 year-long guerrilla war against the Orcs. The Civilised World of Euphrites was located behind the starting point of an Ork WAARGH and was at first ignored if not fully forgotten by the Orks whole the Imperium thought that Euphrites was lost. At first the planet was ignored until a splinter of the WAARGH returned home and found the planet overruning it in several weeks. A task force of the Hochmeister`s was returning home when the news from the Ork attack reached them and under Captain Omir Talus the task force rerouted their route and started a insurection on Euphrites. These Orcs were some reminders from an ancient Orc Klan.
  • Defence of Voripan (765-801.M40): Voripan was a mountain World which got attacked by Chaos Space Marines. In a high mountain environment, the chapter fought a brutal war of attrition by ambushing the Khorne Berserkers in the very rough terrain overpowering them in meele combat. Raids with the local defenders destroyed the demon engins and vehicles of the attacker giving the defenders in the fortresses and Hive Cities an unimaginable support. The war would had been sooner over if the Death Guard had not sent support. Unlike most invasion undertaken by them they were finaly beaten but at the cost of most non-mountain areas and many caves who must be now quarantined.
  • Incara Campaign (689-695.M41): Incara was in the end of the 600s. of M41 the site of a conflict between Necrons and the Imperium. A Necron ship landed several thousand Necron warriors on the northern continent and served as a mobile repair base for them. Soon it was clear why those Xenos didn`t targeted the civilian population: they were tasked in opening smaller Tombs who had failed in reactivating. Most of them were destroyed in the millions of years of inactivity but the ones who were reactivated sent out Necron marchines never seen before killing millions. Thanks thei help of the Imperial Fist the Xenos were driven away in 695.M41.
  • Ambush in the Z7-Harie System (009.M42): A small fleet of the Hochmeister Chapter operating near the Great Rift seeking a potential way hole in it was ambushed by a Night Lords fleet. In this battle used the Traitor forces two smaller space demons to attack the Astartes Fleets while using Boarding Torpedos to infiltrate their ships. The Space Marine fleet was able to disengage with just several heavily damaged ships but they needed two weeks to eliminate the last infiltrator
  • Purge of the Night Terrors (011.M42): The 1th and 4th Company are sent out to destroy the Night Terror Warband, the Night Lord Warband responsible for the ambush in the Z7-Harie System. Centurion Hellstein lead the task force on Anaxis II where the Night Terrors operated and used a guerilla campaign done by the 4th Company while the 1st Company defended the targeted Hives and later sieged down the enemy hidden base.

Another benefit is that it can take in more physical damage and environmental damage without a dangerous explosion.

Matrix Reivers: A special form of Reivers commonly in the Reiver Squads. They are a more specialiced Marines for unconventional warfare. Matrix Reivers have specialised equipment and a different training than normal. Such Astartes can operate in solo or two man squads and recruit partisans for their operations. Often they became later "normal" Astartes bringing their knowledge to other Squads.

Herald Corporal: A Marine for diplomatic missions and first contact missions. Technically no officer rank but can command a small task force (3-6 Marines and 5 support personal) for such missions. Herald Corporals accompany sometimes Inquisitors or other high-ranking personal. Candidats for such title have to undergo a special training and get special ornaments.

  • Will of Stones: The user manipulates stone and rocks. A user can use them then as weapons, to catch enemy shots or harden up rock formations as a defencive structure.
  • Healing Touch: The Librarian uses his powes to heal wounds, heal psychic problems and refresh the energy of the touched person.
  • Rocket Portal: The Librarian opens a portal to a marked person or vehicle who/which can use rockets and allows the rocket to pass the portal and hit a target normaly out of range for the rocket.
  • Electric Particle Storm: A Librarian evokes a storm made of electric particles dampering electronics, sensors or when focused can damage electronic.
  • Minde Manipulation: The Librarian can read the mind of an enemy and manipulate his mind, like deleating or corrupting memories.

Chapter Culture

The Hochmeister are a civilized and polite chapter with an streak of individualism typical for Space Wolves yet way more disciplined. Also unlike to many other Space Marine Chapters value the Hochmeister the lives of baseline Humans, showing empathy and respect to the ones they fight or life alongside.

In contrast to their official sole progenitor the Ultramarines, are the Hochmeister less rigid as characters. While officers, veterans, specialists and discipline are highly respected are the individual Marines more unique as characters, more charismatic and individual with their equipment. Astartes are allowed to individualise their power armour and weapons - in limites of course. Trophies, golden chapter symbols and numbers written down in the most beautifullest calligraphy possible decorate vehicles, arms and the power armours of the marines. With experience and rank come accessories like coats or gemstones.

Hochmeister are encouraged to use their sparse free time to school themself in the lore of the Imperium and the Imperial Cult or learn to craft weapons and machinery. The ultiriour motive here is that those learned skills may prove usefull for the marines on campaigns. Duels or small unit skirmishes are a favourite past time for the chapter.

Chapter Beliefs

Like most Space Marine Chapter the Hochmeister see the Emperor as the greatest man who had ever lived not a God, yet a notable number of Astartes see the Emperor as a god, too great the power he uses to maintain the Astronomicon too unexplainable his miracles.

The Hochmeister see Astartes as paragons of the human spirit, protectors and examples for the common man. It is awaited that each marine shall lead the Emperors people by being an example in prowress and virtue, To inspire loyality, self-sacrific and faith.

Chapter Homeworld

Nova Noricum is a technological advanced Civiliced World in the Leman Sector and the Homeworld of the Hochmeister Chapter. Long mountain chains mark the planet surface alongside oceans and massive lakes. Forests grow unusually high up onto the mountains and seas made of hills dominate the southern hemisphere. Jungles and deserts mark the equatorial line. People live in cities with tens of million of inhabitants surrounded by large rural areas cossed only by roads, villages and outposts of divers types. Eightten percent of Nova Noricums industry are assigned to supply the Chapter with vehicles, ammunition and even fuel for their vessels.

Fortress-Monastry

The Lionite Bastion is the ancient Fortress-Monastry of the Hochmeister. A 75 metre high tower forms the main part of the monastery, placed on a rectangular building placed next to a mountain. The mountain protects the south side of the Klauenburg and tunnels and halls were drilled into its rock. Five smaller fortresses were built in the wall protecting the enitre Monastry. Living quarters and factories were alongside hydrocultures built under the rectangular part of the main building.

Recruitment

Most recruits come from Nova Noricum, the remaining are recruited out of it the system. Sometimes they recruit worthy candidats during their campaigns. The nummber of recruits needed tents to be higher than the average as a of their chimeric Gene-Seed. But first the potential recruits have to hunt down worthy prey and the ones with the best have fight each other. The remaining ones have to undergo training and tests in effort to be evaluated for their skills. Such tests include physical and mental tasks. This can determine the carrer of a recruit. After the first Gene transplantions are done, starts a rigorous training regime and further tests are made.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Gene-Seed is a mix from Ultramarines, Salamanders, Raven Guard and other chapters. Because of that, their Astartes can perform better than most other Astartes. But there is a 45% mutation rate in the Gene-Seed and the producing of new Space Marines is much more difficult. Most mutations are minor but a Hochmeister can have several of such mutation (normally a Space Marine with mutation has only one or two). In M38 they were investigated because of a series of Space Marines found with up to 7 mutations. Inquisitor Darak Uran of Galor later scooped these mutations as a result of merging several Geneseeds into a new one.

Combat Doctrine

In battle, the Hochmeister use their Devilblaster and Devestator Squads to create mobile kill zones and defend but also attack against infantry and light vehicles. For enemies taking cover the Chapter counters them with special grenades. An important factor for them is the using of jumpbacks and special equipment for the specialists and line-rank Space Marines. For defensive or guerillia warfare campaigns they use a mobile doctrine but won`t hesitate to encounter in attrition warfare. Each Astartes carries more supplies than most other Space Marines and was teached engineering and other survival tactics. Often they modifiy already existing vehicles or equippment or upgrade already existing defences of infrastructure to improve their fighting power and the one of their allies. Most times they dispperse their Companies over 2-4 FOBs to prevent the damage taken when one falls. Such FOBs serve often as trainings facilities for their non-Astartes allies and as base for information warfare. When fighting in an information war the operators are tasked to leak wrong informations to the enemy sides and intercept transmissions and information who when would be leaked in the enemy lines damper with the enemy moral. Transports are used for a mobile warfare: in attacks for Schwerpunkt attack, while in defence for an elastic defence. The Hochmeister use combined arms tactics when fighting regularly, using their vehicles or fight coordinated with their enemies.

Notable Members

  • Centurion Jack Hellstein: Jack Hellstein is one of the oldest still active member in the Chapter and veteran of several campaigns and some investigations of his mental health. He is quite an odd character known for starting mission with questionable reasons or tools and methods. Still Hellstein is a capable officer and has combat experience against nearly all enemies and their tactics, even beating Dark Eldar and Craftworld Eldars through his unpredictable mind. Drukarries from the Leashed Argony Kabal still try to assasinate him seeing in him a danger for the galaxy after their entcounter during the boarding of one of the Kabals vessels.
  • Decurion Goldhammer: Goldhammer was a Decurion in the 3th Company in M39 to M40 and was known for his combat skills with Powerhammers. His first name is unknown but was a remakable guerilla-warfare strategist and lead several successful campaigns on occupied imperial worlds. Goldhammer personally trained during his time as Scout-Seargent two Captains and later reformed the guerillia-warfare doctrine of the Hochmeister.
  • Molt Lauun: A Space Marine from the 4th Company and master in information warfare and coordination with allies. Although he is not an officer he is often a staff member for Centurions, even when his Company is not a part of the taskforce. He undertook finally the Techmarine training on Mars shortly before the Noctis Enterna, already being 134 years old making him standing out from the other Techmarines-in-training. Lauun uses as weapons a Chainsword and one of the rare Grav-Pistols, which he got from the Magos Hypotek.
  • Halbrecht Dirnwangler: Halbrecht was a Devestator Marine in the 5th Company and Company Ancient who lived in M37 during waves of WAAHGs hitting Segmentum Tempestus. Dirnwangler personally lead his squad during the following campaigns after the loss of his Seargent but refused all four times a promotion. He gained renown for his last stand on Ovilion II.
Hochmeister Chapter Venerable Dreadnought

Valerian Zen

  • Venerable Dreadnough Valerian Zen: The oldest member of the Hochmeister Chapter with 4.312 years and has collected knowledge about the Chapter and their Homeworld. His Dreadnought is marked with white parts. Zen was originally an Assault Marine and later Seargent of his squad and was wounded during the Pacification of Riam`s Hold fighting against Xenos and cultists later identified as Genestealers.
  • Karsten Kelch: A Vanguard Librarian in the early M42 and used his psychic powers to open portals to allow entire squads to invade infiltrated facilities or to suddenly appear out of nowhere during ambushes or during vanguard operations.

Chapter Appearance

The main colour is dark green. Crimson is a secondary colour. The badge shows two crossed golden axes on a purpure background. Each Astartes is allowed to individualise his Armour but the experienced are allowed to use more decorations than fresh Space Marine. Commonly ornaments are badges or small tablets with engravings. More exotic are furs from carnivors. Among veteran officers or Company Champions its not uncommon to wear coats of predators. Purple or gold trimmings are also popular and some Space Marines use ultramarine trimmings. Signs are also often even more garnished than normally. Capes are often crimson and have golden markings. Rivets used for decorations have when used by Techpriests or Librarians specific designs.

Chapter Relics

  • Hells Tooth - In 784.M37 the chapter fleet confronted an unknown Xenos fleet. After suffering several casualties, the fleet commander Anulf Vasser personally led a task force for a ship to ship boarding to take the xenos's flagship. Armed with heavy bolters and bombs the group forced itself into its bridge and made enough critical damage to it. Legends say that Hells Tooth was the tool for the final hit.
  • Lysanders Gauss Minicannon - In 067.M42 found Battle Bother Lysander on the world of Hevelin Prime a SCT for a so called Gauss-Gattling Gun. The SCT is still under the review of the Mechanicum but the first prototype has alreday become a relict for the 4th Company.
  • Ryk`s Pride - Ryk`s Pride is a Power Sword designed like an ancient Fencing Sword. It was made by a Chapter Champion called Ryk Lassong who was one if not the best duelist in the Adeptus Astartes in M39.
  • Armour of Nova Noricum: The precioust relict for the Hochmeister is the Armour of Nova Noricum. It is a Terminator Armour made from a local noble metall coloured in gold but is so durible like Adamantium Steel and is adorned with thousands of rubies, emerals and other local gemstones. The Aquillia is made up of 4 rare metalls and shines silver. As weapons serve a Storm Bolter, a Plasma Pistol, a Powersword/Chainsword sword, 4 small rockets and a shield.
