The Heralds Angelic are a loyalist Successor Chapter of the regal and fierce Blood Angels, born in the 23rd 'Sentinel' Founding.

Chapter History

Notable Campaigns

  • The Incendiary Spiral (874.M37-877.M37): This was a campaign undertaken by the Heralds Angelic during their search for a homeworld to call their own, started by a series of distress calls from planets within a small range of systems. It resulted in the battle of Caldainiel, in which the Heralds Angelic, fellow 23rd Founding Chapter the Ferric Bulls, and a small Crusading Order made up of two companies of the Crusaders Inexorable would fight against the Phoenixes of Conflagration, a chaos warband aiming to sacrifice Caldainiel to their master. After the battle was one a friendship was fostered beteen the Heralds Angelic and Ferric Bulls, and Caldainiel was taken to be the homeworld of the Heralds Angelic.
  • The Second Battle of Caldainiel (645.M41): The Second Battle of Caldainiel, sometimes called the Siege of Caldainiel was a defensive campaign undertaken by the Heralds Angelic in the 41st Millennium, which saw them defending against a hostile force of invaders that far outnumbered them. The siege was unexpected, and the battle went poorly for the Heralds Angelic. In the penultimate push of the battle, the chapter was split into two groups, and all Exemplars of the chapter, save Forgotten Exemplar Ha'des Setanael, were missing in action. When the two groups made their final push, they did so under the impression that they were to die that day, however in the last moment reinforcements from the Ferric Bulls arrived, assisting in the final assault of the Heralds Angelic against the Invaders.

Chapter Homeworld

Caldainiel, the Homeworld of the Heralds Angelic, is an ice-covered planet, dominated by towering glacial pillars, and wide icy plains. Its frigid atmosphere makes it a difficult place to inhabit, leading to it being sparsely populated, and designated a Feral World by the Imperium. Its population of only a few million people is spread out over much of the planet's low-lying snow-covered plains, mostly in deep craters millennia old, sheltered somewhat from the wind and weather, or carved into the sides of glacial pillars.

Fortress-Monastery

The Aula Glaciata, Fortress Monastery of the Heralds Angelic, is carved into the side of an towering glacial pillar in the northern hemisphere of Caldainiel. Its entrance is an immense cavern mouth set into the very ice of the south facing cliff of the glacier near its peak. From its entrance hangs a great banner of red and gold, depicting the heraldry of the chapter. Within the Aula Glaciata is a labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, and grand halls that make up the myriad meeting spaces, serf housings, training rooms, and workplaces, of the chapter. Deeper within the fortress lies the more important structures of the chapter: the Reclusiam, Chapter Offices, Forge, Gene-seed Vault, and any other facility vital to the functioning of the chapter.

Chapter Organisation

The Heralds Angelic are lead by the Exemplary Council, a council of 20 'Exemplars' that governs the chapter, the head of which becomes the Grand Exemplar. The Exemplars include the Captains of the Chapter's 10 companies, and the Masters of the Chapter Halls. The remaining 5 seats are made up of venerable and experienced banner-brothers, chosen for their wisdom and skill, and the Chapter Master Himself. When an Exemplar is elected as Chapter Master, they must step down from any other positions they hold.

Officer Ranks

  • Grand Exemplar: The title of Grand Exemplar is the Heralds Angelic's term for the Chapter Master. The title of Grand Exemplar was first used by Chrysos Korras, the Chapter's first Chapter Master, who favoured the less militant feeling title.
  • Exemplar: The Exemplars are the members of the Heralds Angelic's Exemplary Council, which guide and direct the chapter.
    • Exemplar of the Halls: The five Exemplars of the Halls are the leaders of the traditional Blood Angel chapter divisions, the Forge (Hall of Flame), the Reclusiam (Hall of Faith), the Sanguinary Guard (Hall of War), the Sanguinary Priesthood (Hall of Blood), and the Librarium (Hall of Tomes). Each Exemplar of a Hall takes the name of that hall as part of their title, for example the Master of the Forge is the Exemplar of Flame.
    • Exemplar of the Companies: The 10 Exemplars of the Companies are the Captains leading the Chapter's Companies. They take a title related to their company number, so the captain of the 1st Company, the Veterans Company, is the First Exemplar.
    • Brother-Exemplar: The 4 Brother-Exemplars can be any brother of the chapter, no matter what their role is. They serve on the Exemplary council due to their wisdom and experience. There have been known Brother-Exemplars from all the different parts of the Heralds Angelic, including the 5 Halls.
    • Forgotten Exemplar: There exists also within the Heralds Angelic the shadowy Forgotten Exemplar, who lords over the Unheralded, those of the Chapter who have fallen to the Black Rage. He has no vote or input, for he leads the damned brothers of the chapter, who stand nothing to gain from the choices made by the council. As such, the Forgotten Exemplar is not truly considered a part of the Exemplary Council, despite his title of Exemplar.

  • Banner-Brother: The catch-all term used by the chapter to refer to its battlefield members, equivalent to a Battle-Brother, just with Heralds Angelic flavouring.

Chapter Recruitment

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Heralds Angelic bear the gene-seed of their gene-sires, the Blood Angels, though with some slight alterations caused by the chapter's residence on Caldainiel. Caldainiel's distance from its home star has weakened the Melanchrome of the Heralds Angelic due to the low levels of radiation that reached the planet. As such the Heralds Angelic bear pale white skin and hair. Alongside this the gene-seed of the Heralds Angelic has mutated ever so slightly to cause low pigment in the eyes, causing all members of the Heralds Angelic to have pale blue eyes. However there are few examples of these mutations or changes being noticeable, as the majority of the chapter's recruits are Caldainic natives, who bear the similar features genetically.

As with all successors of the Great Angel, the Heralds Angelic bear the Twin Flaws of Sanguinius, the Red Thirst, and the Black Rage.

Notable Space Marines

  • Grand Exemplar Jon'ai Samiel: Current Grand Exemplar of the Heralds Angelic.
  • High Herald Pet'hra Brabantios: Pet'hra Brabantios is the current bearer of the Chapter Standard, and one of the 4 Brother-Exemplars of the Chapter.
  • Forgotten Exemplar Ha'des Setanael: Ha'des Setanael, Lord of the Unheralded, and Last of the Exemplars is the current master of the Heralds Angelic's Death Company, the Unheralded. Setanael has served at the head Unheralded for longer than most of the chapter that does know of him can remember. During the Siege of Caldainiel, in 645.M41, the majority of the Chapter's Leadership and members were slain in the vicious battles that spanned the planet, and only Setanael was alive amongst the Exemplary council. Knowing there was no hope for his chapter, he revealed himself and rallied what was left of the Heralds Angelic under the prospect that, if they were going to die that day, they must exact a fine price from their enemies.
  • Grand Examplar Chrysos Korras: The Original Chapter Master of the Heralds Angelic, Korras was originally a proud veteran of the Blood Angels Chapter, who was chosen to assist in the training of the Heralds Angelic, and then was chosen to take the role of their Chapter Master. During his time as Chapter Master, Korras would fight in several important battles, such as the Battle of Caldainiel, where he dueled one of the four leaders of the Phoenixes of Conflagration, Karnogh Praetasus, slaying the physical form of the Chaos Champion, though he lost his right arm in the process.

Chapter Relics

  • The Infernum Palm (Dismantled): The Infernum Palm is the artifact that the Pheonixes of Conflagration were seeking on Caldainiel during the 4th Incendiary Spiral. It was a large primarch-sized Power Fist of unknown origin, placed within a powerful vault near Caldainiel's core dating back to before the Heresy. Though its origins are unknown, there are several theories on its history, with the prevailing idea being that the Infernum Palm was created as a gift for the Primarch Vulkan by an unknown individual, and was placed in Caldainiel's core for safe keeping, or perhaps to absorb the thermal energy of the planet. However, it is evident that if this was the case, the artifact was forgotten for at least the past eight millennia, perhaps due to the outbreak of the Horus Heresy. The Palm had powerful heat generation capabilities, able to generate dangerous blasts of hot air and flame, intense enough to make the artifact unusable by any regular Astartes of the Heralds Angelic, hence it was dismantled and studied, revealing the Infernum Core. After the Heralds Angelic participated in the Battle of Duamka IV, the Ferric Bulls turned the Infernum Core into the powerful Angel's Wrath power sword.
  • Angel's Wrath: Angel's Wrath is a powerful power sword that has long been a key relic of the Heralds Angelic, often wielded by the Chapter Master, or Champion. It was crafted from the ancient power-core contained within The Infernum Palm by the Forgeclerics of the Ferric Bulls, under the guidance of the ForgeFather of the Ferric Bulls at that time. Its crafting was done by the Ferric Bulls as a thanks to the Heralds Angelic for participating in the Battle of Duamka IV, and was given to the Grand Exemplar personally by the Ferric Bulls Chapter Master, Ferric Lord Cyneric Tamarthor. Angel's Wrath has the ability to burst alight with flames, and send forth gouts of hot flame from its tip, due to the Infernum Core's powerful heat-generating ability.
  • Lance of Calamity: The Lance of Calamity is a legendary power spear, wielded by the Lord of the Unheralded. It was first wielded by the original Setanael, the first Lord of the Unheralded, back when the Heralds Angelic were founded, but its origins before that point are unknown. It is wielded by the Lord of the Unheralded in place of the typical Chaplain's Crozius Arcanum. It head and body appear to be made of a solid piece of black metal which entirely contains the inner workings of the spear.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colours

The armour of the Heralds Angelic is primarily white, with golden accents on the pauldron trims, and the poleyns. In addition to this the entire right arm of the armour is painted red, in reference to the severed right arm of Chrysos Korras.

Markings of Honour

  • The Banner of Doom: the Banner of Doom is the most recently created marking of honour utilised by the Heralds Angelic, and is a symbol of the chapter's near doom during the siege of Caldainiel. It takes the form of a black manner marking with a Cross Saltire cutting through it. Those few brothers who survived that battle, lead under the black banners of Ha'des Setanael, Lord of the Unheralded, bear the Banner of Doom with honour.

The alliance between the Heralds Angelic and the Ferric Bulls was born in the Battle of Caldainiel, the first major campaign in the Heralds Angelic's history. After facing the treacherous Phoenixes of Conflagration together, the Chapter-Masters of the two chapters developed a fast friendship over their mutual dislike of the Crusaders Inexorable and their mutual respect for each others' chapter's skills. From there their alliance would only strengthen, with a large contingent of Heralds Angelic joining the Defense of Duamka IV, and the Ferric Bulls rescuing the last of the Heralds Angelic in the Siege of Caldainiel.
