The Grey Wolves are a Successor Chapter of the Space Wolves created during the Ultima Founding, consisting entirely of Primaris Space Marines. In their short history they have gone from bloodthirsty killers to being pushed to the brink of treachery, fighting against their own heretical brothers, but have held on to themselves with little more than their bitter hatred at those that have betrayed them and in the end their loyalty to the Emperor and the Imperium of Man.
Chapter History
Just Another Experiment
Alongside his normal experiments, Archmagos Dominus Belisarius Cawl sometimes tested different theories in the Primaris batches. The theory that pertains to this chapter was how the primaris gene-seed of Russ would fare with the dredges of human society, similar to the idea behind the recruiting done by the ancient IXth Legion prior to Baal when hey were still known as the 'Revenant Legion'. When Cawl was recruiting for his Primaris project he obtained thousands of hardened young criminals and murderers alongside other outcasts that he forcibly converted into Primaris Astartes with the Canis Helix. While many died, those that survived were marked for the experiment and waited roughly 10,000 years in stasis until the reawakening of the Ultramarines Primarch Roboute Guilliman. During this time small amounts of these batches were added to primaris from other test batches so that Cawl could test the new equipment and gene-crafted organs, putting them in contact with the marines who would go on to found the Rift Reapers and among a dozen other early Ultima Founding chapters. During the initial battles of the Indomitus Crusade the most savage of the Space Wolf Greyshields as well as least attached to the ideals of their primogenitor chapter in these opening campaigns were often those of this experimental batch, and when the Ultima Founding became official, they were grouped together in the first wave of new chapters and given a frozen homeworld in the Segmentum Solar to call as their own.
Scouring of the Nifhel System
The first thing the chapter did besides work on their fortress-monastery was clear the pirates and raiders out of the system, most of whom had arrived following the formation of the massive tear in reality known as the Great Rift. These first battles gave the newly-dubbed Grey Wolves Chapter their first-hand battle experience they needed, as well as costing them their first Jarl and many more casualties than they expected with several companies worth dying. In the end they did overcome the pirate fleet, giving them 2 Battleships, 9 Cruisers and 13 Escort Vessels.
Horrors of the Storm
During this campaign the chapter was fully deployed alongside another Primaris chapter created from Leman Russ' gene stock, the Howling Brethren, to clear out an Ork WAAAGH! that had come down on a vital agri-world. During this war a large warp storm engulfed the system for a decade before it cleared out. During this time the Howling Brethren began to fall to madness and butcher anyone they found with many even eating pieces of their victims. At the height of the warp storm many of the afflicted primaris mutated into Wulfen-like monsters and plunged the planet into another level of brutality. At first the Grey Wolves tried to reign in their brother chapter but once the mutations began their demeanor instantly switched to executioners as they systematically slaughtered their insane brethren. It would be a few more solar years before the storms lifted enough for Imperial forces to find the chapter alone battling small pockets of orks but no other living human at all.

The War of Wolves
Eventually tensions boiled over and the vast majority of those that used Asmannde were lost to its corrupting effects, fallen to Chaos corruption and openly attacking their loyalist brothers and beginning the savage War of Wolves. During this war over half of the loyalist wolves were killed and most, if not all, of he traitor wolves were killed. Following the War of Wolves the loyalist survivors of the now fleet-based Grey Wolves went on to a nearby forge world and spent years there as their ships were repaired and their munitions replenished. During this time Primaris reinforcements were added to the Grey Wolves. Akiak created a third Great Company and putting around a companies worth of newer marines in each. All of the Grey Wolves that survived the civil war were promoted to fill the many gaps left behind. All of the Vanguard Marines were brought into the main Packs as the new recruits became those units, those able to lead were made officers, and those that displayed great martial prowess were made veterans.
Sons Of Russ
Shortly after the end of the War of Wolves they were able to send a single Great Company to aid their brothers within the Sons of Russ and help with the First War of Oaths against a myriad of threats in the Segmentum Pacificus.
Current Times
The Great Companies of the chapter have gathered as part of the Third Jamaerah Crusade, deploying alongside the Solar Falcons and many other chapters as well as untold millions of other Imperial forces.

Chapter Homeworld
Before the Civil War
As befitting a chapter pulled from Leman's Gene-stock their homeworld of Niflhel is an death world of ice-choked oceans and arctic landmasses, but it was mostly picked to fit Cawl's experiment involving the chapter recruiting from the dredges of humanity as it is full of roaming tribes of mutants and other outcasts that traverse the frozen tundra with canine driven sleds and raid the main settlements for slaves and supplies. The mains settlements are already warring whaling towns where modern civilization can be found including small industrial areas to process the infinite fish and whale that the planet supports. When the chapter came to the world their very presence pushed the tribes into a warlike frenzy that swept across the planet and caused a massive war that took months for the chapter and the PDF to quell the tribes to tolerable levels, from this near constant turmoil comes the recruitment pool of the chapter. Their main stronghold was an imposing fortification called the Wolf Den or Den for short. It is a cave system tunneled through an isolated mountain range with several castles built at the entrances. A single massive castle is built in the middle of the system and raises above the mountain peaks around it, this castle is built to look like it comes out of the rock naturally. The stronghold was built 1000s of years before but was relinquished to the chapter when they saw it almost unused by the locals.
Fleet Bound
Currently the Grey Wolves use their flagship, the Torngasak, as their mobile Fortress-Monastery and core of the Jarl's Great Company fleet. Each of the other Grey Wolf Great Companies also have their own flagship and fleets to support their missions.
Notable Campaigns
- Nifhel System Clearing (010.M42)- Small conflict against chaos pirates that had taken root near their new homeworld in the chaos of the current times and marks the first chapter action ever taken after being formed. After months of searching for the hideout used by the corsairs was found and during an intense naval battle that saw most of the corsair fleet boarded and captured but also the death of the first Jarl and elevation of Sirmiq to the title. The captured battlecruisers are then turned into mini battle barges for the veteran and battleline companies while the pirates victory class battleship became the personal ship of the Jarl and his company sized retinue.
- Howling Purge (012-021.M42)- The first true battle that the chapter was involved in after clearing out the space around their homeworld, it saw it fight side by side with another Primaris chapter of Russ' Genestock named the Howling Brethren against hordes of Ork on a agri world on the outskirts of the Segmentum Solar. The system was already problematic with warp activity following the creation of the Great Rift, but while these chapters were engaged the system was fully cut off from all communications or warp travel for almost a decade before dissipating. Sadly when all was said and done the Howling Brethren were found to be totally annihilated along with half of the Grey Wolves and the entirety of the civilian and Ork presence. The Grey Wolves claimed all salvageable material from the lost chapter as war spoils, including the lost chapter's voidcraft and a multitude of smaller vehicles, weapons, and armour pieces, as well as their geneseed. Only known to the original survivors of this was that not only did a full daemonic incursion take place, but that the entire Howling Brethren chapter fell to complete madness during the warp storm, with some even killing their own as the insane astartes butchered a majority of the civilian population of the planet in their own shelters. This act forced the Grey Wolves to wipe out the scattered Howling Brethren to the last man, and is said to have scarred the very souls of the Grey Wolves present as they stained their weapons with the blood of fellow brothers of Leman Russ.
- Battle of Hive Eldamar (033.M42)- This bloody battle saw multiple chapters deploy together to push back a heretic Astartes incursion centered around the main hive of the world of Eldamar, one of these chapters was the Iron Myrmidons. The Myrmidons were so appalled at the blatant killing of civilians, including dropping a hive spire onto an evacuation area to destroy an enemy Land Raider, that a Myrmidon Captain approached an asmannde crazed Thane who proceeded to savagely attack the Myrmidon. This ended in the death of the Thane, though the Captain survived as a Dreadnought, as well as a formal censure of the Chapter. This event is the main reasoning behind the Grey Wolves being forced to wat out their censure on Nifhel and thus the primary catalyst for the civil war that would shatter the chapter.
- War of Wolves (046.M42)- This civil war marks the near extinction of the Grey Wolves, and the creation of the Slaaneshi warband known as the Howling Brethren. After a decade of forced isolation on their homeworld or patrol duties far from combat, due to the Inquisition censure as they slowly investigating serious crimes leveled against the chapter. This maddening isolation caused many of the Grey Wolves to fall further into Asmannde and other stimuli like hunting the people of Nifhel. In his isolation Sirmiq used the reserves of geneseed harvested from the original Howling Brethren, who fell to chaos madness and were wiped out in secret decades before the Eldamar. He created almost a full chapter's worth of these marines in secret, each given the powerful combat drugs from their inception and all supremely loyal to the Jarl. When he deems them ready for combat he brought Reclusiarch Tonrar to see them, upon seeing the secret chapter he exclaims that this would be seen as the beginning of Legion building and outright heresy. When asked if was ready for the dire consequences Sirmiq simply said "Yes" and shot Tonrar in the back of the head with his pistol, which had already been aimed at him, without another word. Away from this most of the companies started to become very erratic, attacking civilians and those within their own chapter that would not partake in Asmannde. Akaik rallied as many of these elements to the Wolf Den while the Howling Wolf became infested with at least half the chapter as they fully let themselves go within the forge ship. As the heresy of their brothers became more apparent Sirmiq arrived from his secret storage facilities, bringing his newly created companies. While most of these forces were equipped as various Vanguard or Intercessor units he also hade roughly half of the chapter still loyal to him aboard the flagship and spread out among a large portion of the fleet. In the end The loyalist wolves held on long enough for reinforcements in the way of the entire Solar Falcons being lead by the Great Wolves original flagship the Torngasak commanded by the Grey Wolves' Master of the Fleet. With this development the chaos blockade attempted to hold them back but were crushed and the siege quickly became a rout as traitor wolves deployed on the ground found themselves crushed against the loyalist fortress by a massive wave of fresh astartes forces deploying en masse and with ample orbital support. Within a few hours the war was over with hundreds of loyalist wolves slain and at least equal that of traitor dead though the final fate of Sirmiq and his conspirators has never been confirmed.
- First War of Oaths (048-058.M42): While they do not join this war until half way through they nevertheless reap a heavy toll on enemy forces in this massive crusade undertaken by the Sons of Russ, Ultima Founding chapters who are all derived from the geneseed of the Wolf King Leman Russ.
- Third Jamaerah Crusade (110-Present.M42): After the near victory in the last crusade, the Imperium mustered the largest Crusade sent to the system yet. Almost two dozen space marine chapters deployed in some way, with almost half in their entirety like the Angels of the Blade, Crow Stalkers, Grey Wolves, Solar Falcons, Tidebreakers, and the Zealot Scythes. A small shield company of Custodes lead by Eligon Teminuer, who had been with the Tidebreakers when they tried to rescue the remnants of their Firstborn on their original homeworld and lead them as a quasi Chapter Master for that battle, as well as a force of Sisters of Silence have been added to the Crusade. Thousands of Sororitas battle sisters, including the entirety of the very Order that Teresa was from, have joined this Crusade as it is as much a War of Faith as it is a military campaign if not more. Along with all of these elite warriors are tens of millions of Imperial Guardsman pulled from highly religious worlds to increase their battle fervor, as well as untold millions of pilgrim militia armed with little more than knives and autoguns that had gathered around the Imperial armada prior to its assault. Besides their large Skitarii contingent, Titans were present from the Legio Tyrannica, the Knight houses of Ensiferum as always following their allies into battle, both sent most if not all of their available war machines, at the behest of the Iron Myrmidons who sent half of their chapter to the Crusade. A massive fleet of astartes and naval warships have ensured that the heretical world's system would be cut off from outside help. Currently the crusade is in a brutal deadlock as the capital hive along with several other prominent hives and their surrounding areas are besieged, but in turn the Imperial forces are besieged by a multitude of chaos forces outside of their controlled area. The void war is more in the Imperial's favor but the cost of casualties and lost ships to maintain their blockade of the system is high and beginning to impede their overall progress.

Chapter Organization
While originally set up as a Codex-complaint chapter with reserve companies and battleline companies, it has reverted to better emulate their primogenitors the Space Wolves and their Great Companies. This includes the naming conventions for their specialists like Librarians to Rune Priests and no regular Chaplains as the other specialists all act as a type of Chaplain in their own ways.
The Great Companies
- Akiak's Great Company, 'The Great Fangs' - Known as the most elite of the Great Companies as it had the biggest concentration of pre civil war veterans to start with, giving the Jarl around 200 Wolves after reinforcements were added. Besides lightning assaults they are masters of defensive actions given the brutal siege of the Wolf Den and the many heretic boarding actions during the War of Wolves.
- Mulak's Great Company, 'The Talon's of Bruik' - Created from the surviving remnants of the 2nd and 5th companies and squads of reinforcements to fill the gaps. After the reinforcements were added he commands over 200 Wolves, focusing on void warfare like boarding actions as well as rapid deployment over sustained combat as a whole.
- Tikaani's Great Company, 'The Shadow Wolves' - As the Master of Recruits since the chapter's founding his Great Company took in the most inexperienced of the surviving Grey Wolves after the civil war. He was also given the biggest amount of the reinforcement neophytes, giving him around 250 Wolves with a full Vanguard company. The Shadow Wolves use a large amount of the surviving armoured vehicles to help with overall their lethality and survivability as well as using stealth and ranged firepower more so than the other Great Companies.
Ranks and Titles
- Great Company- Oversized company like formation, each a fully independent fighting force capable of operating alone. Commanded by a Captain equivalent.
- Retinue- A Pack or several Packs that are the honor guards and command squads of the officers, from Alphas to the Jarl and senior specialists these warriors act as their most loyal followers. Each has a select handful of veterans of any unit type and are geared for close combat when possible.
- Pack- Terms for a group of Wolves that is the chapter's equal to a squad.
Officer Ranks
- Jarl- The Chapter Master, he commands the other Thanes but allows them relative autonomy in their deployments. He has his own great company of veterans and specialists outside of his personal retinue.
- Thane- Equal to a company Captain, each is free to command his great company as they see fit unless told otherwise by the Jarl for priority objectives.
- Alpha- Their version of a company Lieutenant, a veteran appointed by a Thane or the Jarl personally to hold this title as a sign of favor and is in charge of several packs.
Specialist Ranks
- High Skald - Similar to a High Chaplain equivalent, leading the other Skalds in burial rites as well as record keeping, besides Rune Priests themselves he frequents the Librarius the most.
- Skald - A unique Chaplain variant within the chapter created following the War of Wolves, charged with raising morale and recording the myriad of battle sagas of the Great Companies but mostly that of the fallen. This rank was created with the remnants of the Chaplaincy when the Grey Wolves restructured themselves more like their primogenitors. Alongside the Iron Priests they are also in joint charge of the Dreadnoughts within each Great Company, and when not attached to a pack they will often lead a couple Dreadnoughts into combat. Given the chapter's current reverence for their dead and death as a whole, Skalds are held as the highest ranking specialists.
- Ancient - Dreadnought and Standard Bearer equivalent. All of the chapter's Dreadnoughts have banners and are covered in ornate iconography to inspire all who gaze upon them. Few Wolves outside of a dreadnought take up a Standard over a them. Besides the Dreadnoughts that display Great company and senior officer banners as part of those retinues, the rest are under the tactical command of the Skalds while the Iron Priests are in charge of their material equipment as joint caretakers.
- High Wolf Priest
- Wolf Priest- Apothecary and primary Chaplain equivalent, like within the Space Wolves their Librarians and Techmarines are also seen as a type of Chaplain. Unlike their primogenitors, the Grey Wolves favor the more advanced medical abilities over the more tribal remedies used by the Space Wolves. Wolf Priests of the Grey Wolves often carry a Crozius along with the normal equipment of an apothecary, though still using artificer chaplain armour including a helm stylized like a wolf skull.
- Helix Priest- Equivalent to a Helix adept, apothecaries still somewhat in training assigned to vanguard squads. Due to Sirmiq's use of the Judicars leading up to the civil war, the Grey Wolves do not use them as lesser chaplains and this rank is considered their equivalent to them as well. They have yet to receive their Crozius and artificer chaplain armour but have been taught the basics of their chaplaincy by this point.
- High Rune Priest
- Rune Priest -Librarian and Chaplain equivalent as seen within the Space Wolves.
- Vanguard Rune Priest
- High Iron Priest
- Iron Priest - Techmarine and Chaplain equivalent as seen within the Space Wolves.
- Einherjar- Plural term used for the veteran marines and those of equal experience. Generally all of the veterans in a great Company will be part of the officer's retinues under.
- Ghost- The chapter's version of a Reiver, these stealth and terror experts venture out alone or in a small pack to perform advanced recon and disruption missions where they can as well as to sow terror into the enemy. Only those considered an Einherjar came become a Ghost and are seldom deployed in sight of even allied forces.
- Hunter- A unique veteran Incursor equivalent for the chapter, an Einherjar that operates alone or in small packs to flush out hidden enemies ahead of the rest of the packs.
- Marked- While not all are veterans in the normal sense, all of those that survived the War of Wolves are referred to collectively as the Marked due to the blood paw print adorning their armour signifying the loyalist survivors as much as the mark on their soul after having to so viciously fight their own heretic brothers. All of the Wolves that carry this mark are considered a veteran, even those that had barely earned wolfhood before siding with the loyalists are held as veteran warriors who held their own against all odds when it mattered most.
Line Ranks
- Pack Leader- Rank used in place of a squad Sargent for the various units.
- Wolf Brother- Terms for a battle brother below the rank of the Einherjar and not a specialist. Amaruq, a Nifhellian word for "Grey Wolf", is also used by the Grey Wolves in a similar but more informal way.
- Pup- Term used for the newly created Primaris as a Vanguard marine, those with all of their implants but still in training and are used as basic recon units.

Chapter Beliefs
When the chapter was founded they almost shunned their primogenitor's customs as far as taking them as their own. Following the chapter's civil war they have embraced many of the more fenrisian traditions of the parent chapter alongside their structure.
Asmannde
A cocktail of combat drugs that was unique in manufacture to the Grey Wolves, it was in fact a chaos corrupted recipe that drove many of the original Grey Wolves to fall to the worship of Slaanesh during their civil war. Currently all traces have either been destroyed or handed over to Imperial authorities as the remaining Grey Wolves want nothing to do with the heretical creation.

Chapter Doctrine
They prefer to deploy quickly and overwhelm their enemies with savage assaults before regrouping and hitting somewhere else, often leaving behind terror troops to keep there enemy disorganized. They have no qualms with cutting down civilians in a crossfire or full on smashing innocents under there feet in pursuit of prey. They favor axes in chain or power form though swords are still common with their forces. They make heavy use of the various repulsor vehicles along with ATVs and bikes to cover infantry assaults. When brute force is not enough they will unleash a wave of terror tactics to patiently break the will of their enemies, including flaying prisoners alive and stringing the skinless bodies up for all to see, before smashing them against an anvil of ceramite when they try to flee or change defensive tactics.
Notable Members
- Jarl Akiak the Redeemer- A Hard nosed commander that was the first to declare Asmannde forbidden to be used by his company. Soon after the 2nd and 5th Thanes declared the same thing, though the remaining Thanes had no such problems with its prolific use aside from a few individuals in each company that kept it at bay within their own packs. At the urging of the Chaplains and Librarians these packs were asked to spread that idea as best they could to others within their companies. Following the civil war Akiak was made the new Jarl of the surviving loyalists with no challengers, every Grey Wolf chanting his name as he lofted the badly mauled chapter banner high into the air.
- Thane Mulak- Master of the fleet at the chapter's founding and had spent the better part of the Censure overseeing the repairs of the Torngasak. During the War of Wolves he was able to receive the distress call from the Wolf Den before it was shut out, mustering the Imperial forces at the shipyard to react with urgency. As Thanes Bruik and Lokoa died during the civil war the remnants of the 2nd and 5th companies were merged to create Mulak's Great Company. He uses the now relic power sword and assault bolter of Bruik, though uses his own artificer Gravis armour without the Inceptor additions.
- Thane Tikaani- Vanguard Lieutenant within the 10th company and the only officer in the company trying to keep Asmannde away from the recruits. Following the civil war he has promoted to Thane of his own Great Company, given the youngest of the surviving wolves.
- High Rune Priest Suluk- Powerful and intelligent leader of the Librarium. He has worked hard with the Reclusium to find a way to stop the flow of Asmannde to the majority of the chapter but to no avail. While Tonrar focuses on the Jarl Suluk tries to get the Thanes to better regulate or outright ban Asmannde in their companies, though most do not show much interest in stopping the combat increase it gives their marines. Uses a Runesword along but no ranged weapon as he trusts his own power far more. Suluk has a squad of Vanguard Librarians that he uses as part of his retinue to counter Shuya and his own network of spies.
- High Wolf Priest Siku- Member of Akiak's retinue and a highly skilled researcher within the Apothecarion. He has been secretly trying to find the source of Asmannde and theorizes that it is being made by another Apothecary but doesnt know who yet. His few leads requiring far more evidence before being made public, even to Akiak. After the War of Wolves he was the high ranking loyalist survivor of the Apothecarion left alive and was made its new leader.
- High Skald Anguta- Anguta was responsible for the burial and upkeep of the expansive crypts that spread out under the Den. It is unknown if his job made him this way or if was born like it but he is a very solitary individual, rarely ever seen outside the crypts except when new bodies are brought to him to be added. After the original crypts were destroyed following the civil war, he has become the watcher of the chapter's new void based Reclusium and current crypt for the honoured dead from all Great Companies.
- Skald Iluak- The main chaplain of the 7th Company, he kept in constant touch with his colleagues in the other companies and was very concerned with the current state of affairs within the chapter prior to the civil war but his company most of all. The 7th Company is a reserve company of Intercessor squads and ATV/Outrider riding Assault Intercessor squads that have taking the hardest hit with only his retinue being entirely free of it. Following the War of Wolves he has done his best to mend the shattered spirits of his brothers, as well as the Nifhellian civilians who have joined the chapter as serfs.
Honoured Dead
- Reclusiarch Tonrar (Deceased)- Alongside Suluk he is trying to find a way to stop Asmannde from spreading further than it already has. Alongside the Librarians the chaplains are the main bulwark against the spread of Asmannde to the newer marines as well as the those from the stasis pods. He is the one that is most vocal to Sirmiq himself about the dangers that Asmannde poses to the future of the chapter. He is the first loyalist killed by Sirmiq and his death signaled the beginning of open hostilities against loyalist forces during the War of Wolves.
- Thane Bruik, (Deceased)- Commander of the 2nd Company and one of the few Thanes that forbade Asmannde from the beginning. During the War of Wolves his company was instrumental in the defense of the Wolf Den, though it cost most the company by the time the Solar Falcons broke the siege. Used Inceptor variant Gravis armour though only a single Assault Bolter, his other hand wielding a Power sword. Died alongside most of his retinue during a last stand against Ranamar and his retinue within the Wolf Den.
- Thane Lokoa (Deceased)- Commander of the 5th Company and one of the few Thanes that forbade Asmannde from the beginning. During the War of Wolves he commanded the loyalist fleet during the beginning of the war and attempted to break the heretic blockade of Nifhel several times, eventually dying when his Mars-class flagship was outright destroyed with all hands on deck by concentrated lance fire following a crippling salvo from captured orbital defense batteries.
- Thane Prunao (Deceased)- Commander of the 6th Company and one of the Thanes that allowed Asmannde, up until he saw brothers killing brothers. After that he gathered the remaining 68 loyalist Wolves of the 6th company and had his small flotilla shoot its way clear of the enclosing heretic fleet, linking up with several other loyalist elements from other companies lead by Librarian Deniigi. As the void war became more desperate he left a skeleton crew to operate and defend his warships with standing orders to only conduct low risk attacks on heretic ships, while he landed his company and defended the last stronghold of loyalist civilians from an unending wave of cultists and far more profane monsters. He was eviscerated by the scythe like claws of a Keeper of Secrets at the conclusion of the battle, banishing it in the process with the help of his retinue before he bled out.
- Thane Mirama (Deceased)- Commander of the 9th Company who disliked Asmannde and kept those that used in separate packs from the others. During the War of Wolves he figured out the heretic ambush and rallied the loyalists of his company in defeating them, dying to a melta rifle volley just before his wolves secured their initial victory.
- Librarian Deniigi (Deceased)- A Librarian of the 7th Company and close friend of Chaplain Iluak. After helping extract the loyalist wolves from the heretic held flagship, he was able to get them back to the relative safety of Nifhel. Died when he was torn apart by a pair of mutated Primaris, each a hybrid of vile daemon and feral wulfen, while defending the ramparts of the besieged stronghold where the last loyalist Nifhellian civilians were located.

Chapter Fleet
Originally they had a small fleet of mostly strike cruisers and escort vessels with a single Battle barge as their flagship, each company had at least a cruiser and several escorts. The fleet grew when they added the captured pirate fleet of to their own and much more so when they added the salvaged voidcrafts from the fleet based Howling Brethren chapter following them being wiped out by orks. Each of these times also added the former flagships, the Deathclaw and the Howling Wolf respectively, of the fleets to the chapter's own. As of the War of Wolves they possessed 11 Capital ships, 23 Cruisers, and 39 Escort vessels within their system and not elsewhere in a shipyard. Sadly most of these ships would either side with the Howling Brethren or were destroyed during their civil war, leaving a far smaller fleet for the loyalist Grey Wolves. While split between the Great Companies their overall fleet currently stands at 3 Capital ships, 6 Cruisers, and 14 Escort vessels, with several of these ships like the Torngasak having been docked elsewhere during the civil war and added afterwards.
Jarl's Great Company Fleet
Besides these it contains 4 Escort vessels.
- The Torngasak (Battle Barge)- Original flagship of the Grey Wolves, this Battle Barge was heavily damaged following the war that saw the Howling Brethren wiped out. It is being repaired at Port Sanctus elsewhere in the Segmentum and had been for decades when the civil war broke out. It was returned to the chapter when the Grey Wolves Master of the Fleet for the Grey Wolves brought the Solar Falcons, who responded with the full weight of their chapter and fleet, and is now the Fortress-Monastery for the chapter as a whole, as well as flagship of the Jarl's Great Company.
- The Frozen Spear (Mars class Battlecruiser)- One of five Mars class Battlecruisers that were captured from the pirate fleet, during the War of Wolves it was the flagship of the 1st Company under Akiak and lead the loyalist fleet in its desperate civil war in the void against the larger heretic fleet. Currently part of the Jarl's Great Company fleet as the personal voidship of the Jarl's retinue.
- The Prunao (Strike Cruiser)- Strike Cruiser used by the loyalist wolves of the 6th company to escape the heretic fleet during the War of Wolves, rapidly deploying the company to help defend the last loyalist civilian stronghold from assault before joining the loyalist fleet's hit and run attacks. Currently part of the Jarl's Great Company fleet.
Mulak's Great Company Fleet
Besides these it contains 4 Escort vessels.
- The Death of Heresy (Oberon-class Battleship)- Powerful naval battleship that was captured from the pirate fleet, who had named it the Death of Gods, in the chapter's infancy. Currently part of Thane Mulak's Great Company fleet as its flagship, who as the Master of the Fleet prior to the Great Companies uses its naval grade weaponry and astartes modifications to deadly effect. Usually hammering an enemy fleet with its dorsal and broadside weapon batteries while it gets in closer to launch boarding torpedoes or drop pods. Part of this effectiveness is the additional armour and shield generators as well as triple the normal point defense turrets added to the battleship to better protect it.
- The Wolf Saint (Strike Cruiser)- Strike Cruiser added after the War of Wolves along with their reinforcements and is currently part of Thane Mulak's Great Company fleet.
- The Lakoa (Strike Cruiser)- Strike Cruiser named after the deceased Thane who commanded the loyalist fleet during beginning of the War of Wolves. Currently part of Thane Mulak's Great Company fleet.
- The Snowpiercer (Strike Cruiser)- Strike Cruiser currently part of Thane Mulak's Great Company fleet.
Tikaani's Great Company Fleet
Besides these it contains 6 Escort vessels and is the largest of the fleets.
- The Solar Salvation (Battle Barge)- This capital ship was given to the chapter by the Solar Falcons after the War of Wolves and is currently part of Thane Tikaani's Great Company fleet as its flagship.
- The Terror Wolf (Mars class Battlecruiser)- One of five Mars class Battlecruisers that were captured from the pirate fleet, during the War of Wolves it was the flagship of the 2nd Company and was part of the loyalist fleet. Currently part of Thane Tikaani's Great Company fleet.
- The Aningan (Strike Cruiser)- Strike Cruiser used by 7th company as their main transport alongside another Cruiser and a handful of escorts. It was used to ferry the non corrupted brothers away from the rest, who were at this point openly hunting loyalists, as well as being used to pick up those of the Vanguard company brought with Takaani. Currently it is part of Thane Tikaani's Great Company fleet.

Chapter Relics
As the chapter is fairly young and has lost much of its original equipment by the current times its relics are those that were used by heroes, like the relics associated with the Wolf Saint Bruik, or are are unique in manufacture for a senior officer, like the relics used by Akiak.
- Fang of Nifhel- Power sword originally meant for the Jarl but after the loss of the Howling Brethren Sirmiq starts using the deceased chapter master's relic power axe Thunderclap. 1st Thane Akiak was given this sword by Sirmiq and uses it as his main weapon. When the civil war erupted Akiak lead the loyalists and almost killed Sirmiq with this sword, before his heretic retinue stepped in to save him. Its thick blade is shaped like a pointed falchion with the pommel and cross guards ending in wolf heads with the same profile as the chapter iconography.
- Frostbringer: A master crafted power axe that has the same ice like blade of the fabled frost axes of the Space Wolves, itself being one of a number of frost axes put in storage for the eventual Primaris chapters when they were unveiled. It was originally a relic weapon of the original loyalist incarnation of the Howling Brethren, used as the main weapon of their chapter champion, and was taken out of his very hands after he was killed personally by Prunao when the brother chapter fell to chaos induced madness decades before the War of Wolves.
- Howling Cuirass- Master crafted MkX Gravis armour made for the original Howling Brethren chapter master when they were founded but now used as the badge of office for the Jarl of the Grey Wolves. Uses the Reiver's enhanced speaker system so that the master would have the loudest howl of them all, and its iron halo is strengthened to further its protective abilities. It comes with a Boltstorm gauntlet upgraded with a trio of Lightning claws coming out from the top of the hand, placed out of the way of the bolter so that neither impedes the other in combat. Originally it came with a master crafted power axe called Thunderclap that is now used by the heretic Jarl Sirmiq.
- Standard of Bitter Defiance- The original chapter standard, badly damaged on several occasions and thought lost during the War of Wolves when its bearer went down to a squad of heretic wolves, it has endured as a symbol of the chapter's defiance in the face of great odds. Due to it being damaged beyond the ability of a decent repair a secondary standard was created for them to rally under that more closely fit the theme of their primogenitor, this tattered standard has become the personal standard of Akiak himself and his retinue.
Regalia of the Wolf Saint Bruik
Equipment used by the revered Thane Bruik during the War of Wolves or was credited to him in life in some way, his last stand and death during the civil war making him a saint to the chapter and surviving Nifhellian civilians alike. Most of these items have ended up with Mulak's Great Company as the survivors of Bruik's 2nd company for the most part are in Mulak's now aside from those chosen to join the Jarl's Great Company.
- Cry of the Wolf- Assault Bolter used by Thane Bruik as his favored ranged weapon, master crafted internals and modified to use a targeting system borrowed from an auto bolt rifle. Like much of his surviving gear it is considered a chapter relic, currently used alongside his former sword by Thane Mulak.
- Remembrance Mantle- Adamantium laced cloak of ornate quality, was owned by Bruik but was in his personal chambers of the Wolf Den during the War of Wolves and was left untouched by the brutal room to room warfare. Following his death and the Imperial victory, some of the blood from every recovered loyalist Grey Wolf body was spilled onto the cloak and their names embroidered into the cloak with golden wire. This was to signify the blood debt the chapter would forever owe these Wolves, betrayed by and fighting against their very brothers since ascension to the chapter it is worn by Akiak for ceremonial occasions, sometimes a Thane or one of the High Priests when a Great Company needs to be reminded of their blood debt in hellish warzones.
- Wings of Bruik- While the majority of his armour was rent to pieces during his death, his jump pack and backpack as well as its iron halo and several pieces of its iconography were able to be fully repaired. They were all put on to a new suit of artificer MkX Gravis Armour and is reserved for a Champion that embodies his fighting style and courage against great odds.
- Winterbite- Power sword used by Thane Bruik of the 2nd company, who remained loyal during the War of Wolves and was one of the main commanders of the Grey Wolves in their defense, considered one of the true fallen heroes of the chapter. Following his death during the civil war it was recovered and eventually given over as the badge of office for the Thane of Mulak's Great Company.
- Wolf's Talon- Name that Thane Bruik gave to his personal combat knife, left in its sheath when he died it and was recovered along with his body by the loyalists after the heretic wolves were routed from the Wolf Den. He had the crossguard made to look like a wolfs head with the blade coming from its mouth. It has since been engraved with his name in stylized lettering down each side of the blade with intricately small runic wards outlining it, a small strip of the now lost original 2nd company standard torn off from it while his retinue fought Ranamar to the death hangs from the pommel. Following the civil war the majority of Grey Wolves started referring to their combat knife as their "Wolfclaw" in emulation of Bruik and his Talon.

Chapter Appearance
Chapter Colours
While the majority of their armour is still painted with light and dark greys, following the War of Wolves a more blueish grey similar to their primogenitor chapter's power armour is used for accent instead of the white used when they were founded. The eye lenses of their helmets have a bright yellow colouration like that of a death world predator and often their armour is adorned with animal skins and flesh totems to mark their prowess in battle. They do still retain the normal Codex-color variations for their helmets and specialists.
Iconography
The chapter badge is a silhouette of a red coloured wolf's head, its jaws open as if ready to snap shut, with red eyes inside the outline and all on a blueish-grey field though originally it was on a white field. After the War of Wolves every loyalist survivor has a blood red wolf paw print prominently displayed somewhere on their armour to signify having fought in the brutal civil war.
Relations
Allies
Armorial of the Rift Reapers
Rift Reapers
The famous duel between Lion El'Jonson and Leman Russ has spawned a millennia long tradition of this duel being repeated by the chapters, and during the testing of the primaris prior to the Ultima Founding the Rift Reapers and the Grey Wolves often repeated this as well. Though besides these duels the chapters are relatively close allies. Following the War of Wolves the Rift Reapers sent several veteran squads to assist with training the newer marines sent to reinforce the badly mauled chapter, but they were turned away by the Inquisition and the Solar Falcons whose joint custody the Grey Wolves were under.
Armorial of the Solar Falcons
Solar Falcons
Both are also located within the Segmentum Solar and see it as their duty to defend Terra itself. During the battle for Hive Eldamar these chapters ended up working well together as the unflinching Falcons persecuted the populace after the battle to weed out every hint of corruption left behind and the Wolves assisted in the round ups. When the War of Wolves was at its most pitched against loyalist forces, the entire Solar Falcons chapter emerged from the warp and answered the initial distress call before the traitors blocked communications. Currently the Grey Wolves are under a half penance crusade and half mentorship under the Solar Falcons, forced to follow them into battle and follow their commands no matter what, as a way to both learn from a notably loyal and pious chapter as much as for the Falcons to secretly judge them worthy to not be wiped out for heresy.
Enemies
Armorial of the Battleforged
Battleforged
The Khornate warband attacked their Fortress-Monastery shortly after the chapter's creation but seemingly called off the siege when loyalist reinforcements came and they could not push into the fortification no matter how hard they tried. To this day the Grey Wolves want to kill each and every single one of them just for the sake of killing heretic astartes as well as finishing the grudge. Unknown to the Wolves the Battleforged consider the siege a success as there goal was not destroying the chapter but to gain data on primaris weapons as well as enhancements, an operation lead by the Supreme Warsmith Estafalon himself. Another observation gained from the assault was the sheer brutality the chapter showed, impressing most of the Khornate, but also gave them samples of Asmannde from looting the bodies which became a surprise prize for the warband, as the senior Bloodsmiths did their best to synthesize it with partial success.
Armorial of the Iron Myrmidons
Iron Myrmidons
While both are loyalist chapters the Myrmidons absolutely abhore the Wolves total disregard for civilian life, they witnessed them use civilians as bait to draw out their heretic prey or dropping a hive spire on top of thousands just to crush a single enemy Land Raider. After the spire drop the Myrmidon captain chastised the Wolf lord that ordered the shot and then challenged the him to a duel of honor. The Thane answered with a heavy bolt pistol round to the hip before descending upon the Captain with his axes, as he was still amped up from Asmannde, which resulted in the death of the Wolf but the Myrmidon had to be interned into a Dreadnought. After this incident the Wolves were formally censured for the spire and other actions and have hated the Myrmidons ever since. One of the more long term effects of this feud is the Mechanicus not supplying the chapter in any real quantities, leaving them short on munitions and vehicle parts by the current years of M42.
