"Failure is not an option allowed to us Astartes. For we are the Emperor's Angels--and those children of His greatest Son,"
—Newly-made Chapter Master Gabriel Gryphas during the Battle of Aionia's Capital (Megacity of Constantine)

The Angels Palatine are a semi-codex complaint, and somewhat well-known Loyalist Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes created during the ill-fated 21st Founding, the so-called 'Cursed' Founding, from the proud lineage of the Blood Angels.

The Angels are located in a grouping of systems known as the Bright Stars, or officially as Sub-Sector Aionia, which are comprised of lush and mineral-rich worlds within Segmentum Ultima. Their founding reason was to act as the defense force and arbiters of the Bright Stars, their main objective to defend the Stars from invasion through a semi-stable warp rift in the area known as the 'Malum', or 'The Evil'.

Due to the fact that Sub-Sector Aionia is near the north-western boundaries of Obscurus and Ultima (thus putting it relatively close to Cadia) they often acted as reinforcements for the Cadian System, and it's Cadian Gate prior to the Era Indomitus.

Most of their active duty prior to the Era Indomitus was spent destroying minor Chaos incursions into their system, as the both the Malum and Eye of Terror resides in close proximity. However, they were noted to send 'crusading' prongs outwards to aid in the affairs of the Imperium outside their center of gravity.

In recent years they've been fighting a rough crusade against invading Orks led by the Warboss Gritgutta, as well as a Chaos force under Kor Vest--both of these invading armies trying to take control of the Bright Stars due to their stability between the two sides of the Cicatrix Maledictum and abundance of resources.

As a result of the destruction wrought by the Orkish and Traitor incursions, the Bright Stars have effectively been formed into the Realm of Auster; a pocket Empire held as a fief by the Angels Palatine--similarly to Ultramar and its Ultramarine overlords.

Chapter History[]

Not much is known about the Angels's early history, aside from the fact that they are registered as a Chapter of the 21st Founding (also known as the 'Cursed' Founding) and are one of the few Chapters not to have fallen to the taint of Chaos or be declared Perditus by the Inquisition.

Due to the notability of their founding, they've found themselves with a forced reputation that comes with being a Chapter of the 21st Founding. Such a reputation has left it hard for them to gain allies among their fellow Adeptus Astartes Chapters; as many actively shunned them prior to the Era Indomitus. In fact, they have found few if any friends within the Imperium as a whole--only being able to rely on themselves and a select few allies.

Through their given role of protecting the Bright Stars from incursion as well as managing the region in general, the Chapter has managed to leave a piece of itself on every world among the Bright Stars--such as laying the first few blocks of what would later become the Megacity Constantine on Aionia, or helping to replant massive forests on Harmony when the planet needed such things to keep its atmosphere in check. They always strive to be there when needed and will often move metaphorical mountains to ensure they are.

Though still eyed with suspicion from those less-willing to accept their founding, the Angels Palatine have proven themselves time and again to be unflinchingly loyal to the Emperor Himself, and his Imperium. This was made obvious by their active assault of many Chaos held worlds within the Segmentum Obscurus and Ultima in order to gain retribution for their near extinction. During this new campaign, the Angels, and their new brilliant Chapter Master Gabriel Gryphas, have shown that they are indeed linked to the Blood Angels, cutting a bloody swath through Chaos held worlds within the Bright Stars and beyond. Despite this recent bout, they still hold a reputation as a tireless protector of humanity within the Bright Stars, and Segmentum Ultima as a whole.

During the Devastation of Baal Chapter Master Gabriel Gryphas lead a full Battle Company of Angels Palatine to the aid of the Blood Angels--this Company, originally 100 Astartes, was cut down to 42, with Gabriel wounded, but Gabriel and his Astartes had cut a bloody swath into the Tyranid lines during the Devastation; earning the respect of those around them, largely lessening the stigma held by their fellow Sons of Sanguinius due to being of the 21st Founding. Gabriel Grypas was one of the few who got to see the Primarch Guilliman upon his arrival, although the two never spoke.

Following the Devastation of Baal, where they honourably handed over 20 Astartes from the surviving 42 Battle-Brothers to aid in Dante's rebuilding efforts, the Angels Palatine would enter their zenith culturally and militarily. Under the guidance of Chapter Master Gabriel, the Angels would begin a program of mass-recruitment and training that began to gradually recoup the Chapter's previous losses. By the time of the current Era Indomitus the Chapter is over the hurdle, back into the realm of combat-effectiveness, and actively campaigns in their home sub-sector to maintain it against the Orks of Warboss Grittgutta, and those traitor Astartes under Kor Vest.

Following the return of Roboute Guilliman, and the Primarch's Indomitus Crusade, the Angels Palatine are yet to receive Primaris reinforcements--making up the 6% not yet reached by Torchbearer Fleets.

Due to the horrific devastation wrought by the two-pronged invasion into the Bright Stars much of it has effectively been united under Angels Palatine control--dubbed the Realm of Auster; with Gabriel assuming the title Lord of Auster, alongside his title of Sebastokrator (Chapter Master) of his Chapter. This is in mimic of the Ultramarines and their realm of Ultramar. Although, such a centralization based around the Chapter has caused no small amount of friction between the Astartes, some of their new 'citizens'--and even the Chapter and the Inquisiton.

Chapter Culture[]

Based around that of their official Progenitor, the Blood Angels, the Angels Palatine have since developed a rather unique culture--wherein they follow the Eastern Roman-like culture that was prevalent on Aionia. This culture was quickly spread throughout the Bright Stars as the august Angels made their mark on the sub-sector.

The Chapter spends much of their off-duty time, if they get any, constructing pieces of artwork that will later decorate the Fortress Monastery upon completion. The most common forms of art produced are sculptures and mosaics; with the mosaics being noted as some of the most beautiful art pieces of their type--such as the Brightest One, a mosaic showing Sanguinius in all his glory which resides in the Akropoli's gallery.

The Angels have carried over the habit of sleeping in the sarcophagi used to create them during Gene-Seed Implantation. They believe that it is in this slumber that they are one step closer to Sanguinius and seek to gain insight into the psyche of their supposed forefather.

Despite all of this, the Angels Palatine carry something only dominantly seen with those Sons of Dorn; their skill in construction and fortification efforts; with the corner-stone of the Angels strategy based around their Astartes building roads, and forts, as they campaign on a world.

Notable Campaigns[]

Chapter Home World[]

Canditus

Departmento Cartographicae pict-file of Aionia, Chapter Homeworld of the Angels Palatine.

The Chapter's home world - and main place of recruitment is Aionia, the functional capital of the Bright Stars and the wider Realm of Auster.

A large planet by itself, Aionia is a rather odd planet, with about 60% of the planet covered in water; the landmass made up of 3 large continents. Out of the 3, Augustina is the largest, as such this is where the planet's capital--the Megacity; Constantine, is situated.

Aionia was once a Feral world--with a small collection of tribes spread across the planet. The reason for this was due to a failed colonization effort by humanity prior to the Age of Strife, with the landing colony ship breaking apart and landing across the planet. This scattering, coupled with the dangerous predators of the planet, resulted in a slow population growth, mostly kept to the open plains of Augustina so that the beasts would be in plain sight if they chose to attack.

Soon after this though, the people of the world managed to recover the remains of their colony ship, and its semi-intact STC. Through this, they evolved in technology to a high-medieval standard, with the ability to also produce a few items of a higher standard, such as primitive hydroponics and low-level gunpowder weapon’s.

What rose from this was an outlandish Roman thematic-like system, where multiple Villages forged themselves together into bigger towns, training men to wield and wear weapons and armour, comparable to the Thematic armies of Old Earth, forming a planetary guard force that kept back the beasts.

This culture would be so prevalent that once the Imperium arrived, and later the Angeles Palatine, would adopt the naming conventions and characteristics of the people they ruled over; their Chapter Master for example being dubbed as Sebastokrator; which is ironically Greco-Roman for August Ruler.

Due to this culture, and the gradual introduction of it into the Angels Palatine, the Astartes of the Chapter field units based around Greco-Roman characteristics; such as the use of Tagmata instead of Companies--as well as picking up the practice of cremation over burial.

Fortress-Monastery[]

The Akropoli is the fortress-monastery of the Angels Palatine, a massive castle-like structure made with beautifully decorated fortifications. This mighty citadel was built on a massive oasis on Aionia's second largest continent, dubbed Palatina for its inhabitants--which is a massive desert. This environment, while allowing the Angels a semblance of solitude, also draws them, as it reminds them of their ancestral home of Baal. This fortress-monastery is massive, able to hold the full Chapter, its servants, and trainees--alongside having space to manage equipment and vehicles.

For defense the Akropoli is surrounded by three large walls, dubbed the Theophilian Walls in honour of the First Sebastokrator of the Angels Palatine. Each wall is maintained by a constant force of serfs if push came to shove could viably see off most incursions.

Chapter Recruitment[]

Originally the Angels Palatine recruited entirely from Aionia, and it's moon Kato. This was due to both planetary bodies having access to deadly creatures as well as a harsh climate in a singular area the Angels are inclined to put these to use.

The Angels built Recruitment Monastery in Kato's Desert of the Wastes shortly after their Main Monastery on Aionia's own Palatina Desert. Originally they recruit from both in the Summertime of both planets; forcing aspirants to march a grueling desert trek until they finally reach the walls of either Monastery--and then, further from that they must survive a following day in the elements. Those that survive are accepted as full Aspirants.

This was changed radically with the introduction of the Realm of Auster; the centralized and managed realm of the Angels Palatine that acts similarly to its inspiration; the Ultramarine's Realm of Ultramar. Now, both in order to better defend their worlds, and to gain recruits, each world within the Realm of Auster has its own Recruitment Monastery--with recruits being drawn in a managed manner every few years. This has resulted in the Chapter gaining a more unique character of multiple ethnic groups; as well as spreading their original

Greco-Roman culture.

Standard Skoutatos, by BoradV

Standard, unarmed, Skoutatos.

Following years of training within the Monastery the Aspirants are to begin their implantation of Gene-Seed, which has a slow intake rate, thus an Aspirant will only be a fully Augmented Individual by age 20, not 18.

Before the Aspirants are Augmented with their Black Carapace however they are deployed into the forests of Aionia, this being after all Aspirants are moved to The Akropoli for training and implantation, and tasked with killing a massive beast within the forest.

Unlike other Chapters, the Angels refuse to have a system where they may lose Neophytes to each other--thus they are expected to and trained to form bonds over their years of training and implantation, and are deployed in full tactical squad like movements in order to complete their task.

Those that return with their kills are fully augmented with the Black Carapace, and once all return a ceremony where the Blood of the current Chapter Master is drunk between the whole Chapter, as a way to form 'blood ties', is committed.

Following this, each former Aspirant is slid into the Scout Company for a year before they are removed and placed within the Devastator Company.

Chapter Gene-Seed[]

The Chapters Gene-Seed is rather stable in comparison to that of it's supposed Progenitor, being at a 30% Mutation Rate in comparison to the 50% Mutation Rate of their Progenitor. Thus 70% pure.

However, they are missing a few organs from their 'roster', as these organs cease to function properly. These organs are;

  1. The Betcher's Gland (No longer functional at all--completely unable to be implanted)
  2. The Sus-an Membrane (Malfunctioning--refusing to work in certain Marines, but does in others)

These defects, including the sharing of overly similar facial features to those of the Sons of Dorn--which was noticed during Campaigns alongside the Star Wardens, resulted in a rigorous check of their Gene-Seed by their Apothecaries, finding multiple differences in their Gene-Seed than what was to be expected--namely changes to the Gene-Seed that resulted in the loss of the Betcher's Gland and the malfunctioning of the Sus-an Membrane.

This has since forced the Chapter to accept that they cannot fully be Sons of Sanguinius--as their Gene-Seed reeked not of Mutation, but of Mechanicus tampering--which they logically noted was due to their Founding.

Notable Chapter Members[]

Sebastokrator Theophilus - The First Chapter Master (Sebastokrator) of the Angels Palatine; he integrated the Chapter with its homeworld of Aionia by taking a title from its history as his own--as well as ordering the creation of the impressive Theophilian Walls that protect the Chapter's Fortress Monastery, the Akropolis. He was killed during the 5th Black Crusade.

Sebastokrator Flavius Paligos - The Sebastokrator during the Shattering; his skill being the only thing keeping the Chapter, and all of Sub-Sector Aionia, from crumbling under the invasions of Waaagh!!! Grittgutta and the Chaos Incursion of Kor Vest. He was killed in battle against Kor Vest during the Battle of Aionia; being avenged by his successor, the then 4th Exarchos (Captain) Gabriel Grypas, when Gabriel took Kor Vest's right arm and turned the tide of the battle.

Sebastokrator Gabriel Grypas - The current Sebastokrator of the Angels Palatine; he widely considered the sole reason that the Bright Stars, and Sub-Sector Aionia, have not fallen out of the Imperium's light. Taking his position following his victory against Kor Vest; turning the tide of the Battle of Aionia, Gabriel was one of the few officers left in the Chapter. His reforms, as well as his efforts to aid his fellow Sons of Sanguinius in the Devastation of Baal, have earned him the well-earned reputation of a great tactician, diplomat and warrior. He is directly responsible for the stabilization of the Bright Stars and the fast rebuilding of the Chapter; as well as the creation of the Realm of Auster.

Lord Justicar Basil Dimios - The current Lord Justicar within the Angels Palatine; Basil earned his fame, and position, as the Justicar of the 7th Company; serving consecutively in 5 different Chapter 'Crusades'. It is said that whenever the Chapter draws lots to see which two Tagmata go out on Crusade, and Basil is one of those who've stepped up to draw, he always ensures his Tagmata is chosen. He earned primacy of the Justicars, as Lord Justicar, through defeating the Daemon Cza'dzak Wrathcleaver in his 3rd Crusade. From then on, there has been a rivalry between Cza'dak and Basil, and whenever possible the two come to blows.

Aionian/Austerean Glossary
[]

Sebastokrator - Literally meaning 'August Ruler'. It was originally used as the term for the ruler of Aionia prior to the arrival of the Angels Palatine; but was later adopted as the Chapter Master title by the Angels once they came to rule the planet.

Tagmata - Meaning 'Battalions'; the term came to replace the use of the term 'Company' within the Angels Palatine. Thus, all 11 'Companies' of the Angels are dubbed as Tagmata instead.

Exarchos - Meaning 'Legate'; the term came to replace the use of the term 'Captain' within the Angels Palatine. Thus, all the 'Captains' of the Chapter are dubbed as Exarchos instead.

Justicar - The official, in Chapter, name for the Chaplains within the Chapter--with the title of Reclusiarch replaced with the title of Lord Justicar.

Evikatos - Meaning 'Honourable Veteran'; the term is used to refer to those who are a part of the elite 1st Tagmata who're given the privilege of making use of the Chapter's Terminator plate.

Skoutatos - Meaning 'Shield Bearer'; the term came to be the official, in Chapter, name of the Line-Astartes of the Chapter due to the fact that every 'standard' battle-brother is equipped with a modified boarding shield called a Skoutas.

Notable Quotes[]

By the Angels Palatine[]

"We have been dealt a blow. We've lost too many to let that slight go. We will carve a path through our enemy and show them the true price of wronging us."
—Varangian Captain; Alexios.
"Brothers, here begins our domain. Here is the first and final home of our noble lineage. Here is the wall built to withstand the damnable tides. Here must we stand fast and push back all threats. We are worthy of it as it is worthy of us. Defend our fief brothers! For Aionia! For the Bright Stars! For the Emperor!"
— Att. First Chapter Master, Sebastokrator Theophilus.
