The Emperor's Knights, known formally as the 'Imperialis Mandatum Equestrium' in High Gothic, is a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter created during the recent Ultima Founding from unknown genetic lineage. Though their founder Cawl insists they are of Dark Angel lineage, the chapter is highly sceptical.. They are a non-codex compliant chapter yet do follow some level of compliance. There uniqueness comes in their beliefs, they do not believe in the Emperor as a god, but as both gene-sire and King and therefore believe the Astartes to be his knights created with his perfect hand.

Chapter History

Soon after the revival of Lion El'Johnson and the Destruction of Cadia, Archmagos Belisarius Cawl's ship the Zar-Quaesitor was violently torn out of the warp reappearing in Realspace alongside a system that didn't exist just moments before. After a quick scan the system was identified as Calibros, a long thought lost sister system of Cithonia. During the mini-expedition Cawl launched, he was given the news of the Lion's revival and due to the closeness this new system had to Caliban, Cawl established a chapter entirely of Primaris Space Marines as a gift to the newly awakened Lion El'Johnson

However, almost all documentation of the Emperor's Knights creation has been lost or hidden away. The only information available is the fact their fortress-monastery they were founded in had an ancient gene-vault. Who exactly their Gene-Seed is descended from is unknown but according to Cawl, it was purged and the pure Gene-Seed of the Lion was used in the Chapter's creation, though whether this statement is true or not, is unknown.

Notable Campaigns

  • Calibros reclamation (999.M41) - Even before the founding of the chapter, the system was plagued by a cult that occupied all bar Calibros 6 and Calibros Prime. After the chapter's founding, their first objective was clear - purge the heretics. With the assistance of the Knight House Nemisi, and led by their first chapter master, Knight Grand Master Vasian Baile, they initially charged onto the forge world of Calibros 5. There was no initial orbital resistance which showed Vasian that these cultists where not technologically inclined. However, after the force of the chapter landed they found they were greatly mistaken, being instantly sieged by corrupted Mechanicus Battle-Automata. The Knights, with assistance of macro rounds from orbit, fought their way to the Majoris forge complex where the vast majority of the Emperor's Knights where pinned down at the gates. Nonetheless, Intercessor Squad Talasar of the 5th Brotherhood managed to enter the mostly abandoned Majoris forge complex through a maintenance tunnel. Upon locating the main elevator they found that all floors, bar the bottom floor, had no possible access. But upon reaching the bottom floor they where met with archaic symbols of purple blood reminiscent of the Necrons, yet charged with warp energies. In the center was a sword radiating enough warp energy to halt the space marines in their tracks. As the sergeant approached the blade the minds of the entire world were halted, the combat across the planet stopping. Each Astartes, cultist and corrupted Mechanicus member transported to a world of nightmares. Most humans had exploded, unable to withstand the warp; All but a single battle-brother of Squad Talasar called Verakai. While screaming litanies, he managed to bound the sword in chains and attached it to his armor ending the Chaos corruption. After the dust had settled, Verakai was named first Knight Champion and Keeper of the Sword - later named the Tzalmavet - and led the crusade throughout the rest of Calibros. But, all cultists had either become piles of sludge or forgot anything that happened. Liberating the system and beginning a tradition within the chapter.
  • Battle for Nandario (012.M42) - The Threat of the Eye of Terror was something under constant watch due to the location of Calibros. But when a call to arms was sent out the Knights answered. The entire chapter sped towards the Chinchare Subsector and arrived in the Reznor system. At the time the Word Bearers where corrupting the planet of Nandario and where charging the planets capital hive city Rostenville. The Knights plummeted from the sky, in drop pods, surprising the Word Bearers. The force, made up of brotherhoods 1-5, lead by Knight Grand Master Vasian Baile, charged the Word Bearers with chainsword, power weapon and pistol. The 6th Brotherhood landed in the hive city and began to evacuate civilians. The fighting forced the Knights and Word Bearers back towards the desert where Erabus summoned a swathe of daemons. In need of support, Vasian Baile called in the other 4 brotherhoods to encircle the Word Bearers, but the tide of deamons stretched the circle out thinly over kilometers. Until, Vasian boarded a Stormraven and went straight for Erabus. Erabus challanged Vasian and they dueled one on one. The fight tore up the dune to a point they ended up fighting on the rock beneath the sand. That fight continued until Erabus smashed his maul into Vasians head, breaking his skull and causing a severe brain bleed. Erabus complimented Vasian's fighting but Vasian took the last laugh, launching a dead man orbital bombardment on top of himself. Sadly, Erabus escaped but the bombardment killed hundreds of cultist and Word Bearers alike. The Knights were broken, having suffered many losses, until the 6th Brotherhood returned from there evacuation and Brotherhood Master Servestus Garviel lead the Chapter to victory. The body of Vasian was found kilometers away, his Armor untouched, likely teleported with Erabus. Afterwards, the 6th Brotherhood was named the "Saviors of Nandario" and Garviel was named Knight Grand Master. Although, Garviel spent months training with the Guardian of Calibros in a rage for losing Vasian Baile.
  • War for the Cadian Gate (024.M42) - During the Height of the 4th Tyrannic war, Leviathan had its tendrils all over the Galaxy, but they was least expected to be heading for the Eye of Terror. Belis Corona sent out an emergency signal and the Emperor's Knights where first to answer. Upon arriving, they found that the defences that where set up in the wake of the 13th Black Crusade where not fit for the Tyranid threat. Lezilla Caros separated from the chapter to lead the Scattered naval forces whilst Servestus Garviel Ordered Brotherhoods 5-10 to defend Subiaco Diablo and the rest to Phonsar to attack the Hive Fleet. However, after 4 Months of utter silence, The Emperor’s Sword limped into Subiaco Diablos orbit, the grave news was delivered. Brotherhoods 1-4 were wiped out entirely. Understanding the threat Garviel ordered Lezilla to take Grand Theacaruis Isador Akios out of system to call for help and the rest of the defending forces shored up with the Order of there Ermine Mantle at its head, until the hive fleet attacked. Repelling of the initial waves was easy with Astra Militarum and Astartes mowing down the xenos. That was until a Norn Assimilator named the Wrath of Typhon landed on the planets surface. It charged straight for Servestus Garviel who fought it for many long hours, until his arm was severed by a sweeping strike. That's when Calacar un-chained the Tzalmavet and the sheer psychic strength burned the minds of the Tyranids and the Norn Assimilator fled. The mental strain incapacitated Calacar and the waves kept coming. Before hope was lost, The Emperor's Sword with the Indomitus fleet Sextus arrived in orbit lead by Captain Boltfist of the Ultramarine's 3rd company. The forces of the fleet beat back the xenos out of system. Despite this, the failure left a mark, both physically and metaphorically, on many in the chapter. It was the greatest awakening of "The Longing" in the chapters history.

Chapter Home World

"We shall slaughter the xenos likes the wolves of Calibros!"
— Servestus Garviel, During his speech to the chapter prior to the war for the Cadia gate

Calibros Prime is one of two seats of power within the Calibros system, with roughly 11 billion people. It is an old hive world with six main cities, each topped with orbital elevators. The capital city is Nazareth, the hive city that surrounds Helgate. In between the hive citys are dense forests home to Calibros Prime native populus of wolves and a local legend of the wolf bane, a speeding spirit known to kill any wolves tainted by chaos. On top of this, the world doesn't speak normal gothic, its native tounge is called Laiti.

Another key point about there planet is, due to there closeness to the eye of terror, Chaos cults frequently pop up within the forests. However, due to the frequency of these cults, the planets populous enjoy holy crusades into the forests to hunt and kill in the name of the Emperor.

Fortress-Monastery

Helgate is an ancient fortress-monastery in the center of Nazareth. Its overall shape is like a cone reaching just into the exosphere. At the very top is a dual battery of nova cannons which defends the chamber known as the Valde Malus Arca. A series of Blackstone chambers which house in order: the Emperor's Knights' Councilorum, the Throne room and finally the Chamber of Relics which, at its center, is the cage used for the Tzalmavet. At the base of the Helgate is the gene vault locked behind enough automated defences to defend against most foes.

Combat Doctrine

The combat doctrine of the Emperor's Knights is built around on central belief, Adaptability. One of the sole and oldest Tenets of combat within the Knights is master of war more than a master of a particular fighting style as seen during Vasian baile's first address to chapter:

"The purpose of a Knight is not to master the art of a weapon, but to master the art of war."
— Vasian Baile to the Newley founded chapter

This does not mean however that the Knights do not have favoured method of war. The Emperor's Knights are avid in rapid assault with either Thunderhawk or Drop Pop, using a varied amount of infantry to face down any foe.

A typical offensive undertaken by the Emperor's Knights would be made up of a multitude of either: supply ambush, disruption and other forms of sabotage or decapitation strikes from an established base. Upon destruction of the enemy's command and supply lines, heavier forces and armored vehicles would be used round up and end the remaining forces.

On the defensive however, the use of heavy armor is the first response, supressing enemy forces, before sending the infantry behind the enemy encircling them and working inwards and cutting of the enemy's head. Beyond that some defensives will be simple all out assaults using the adaptability of the Knights to overcome the foe.

Chapter Culture & Beliefs

Knighthood belief's

The Emperor's Knights, much to there namesake, have there own Knight order to the Emperor of Man. with a spin on the Imperial cult, they believe in the Emperor as there Royal and patron who they have pledged fealty to. They however, despise the belief that Astarte's are "angles", as a Major tenet of the Belief is that the Astarte's, Sororitas and all members of the Imperial military are holy crusaders not divine beings, bar those considered saints and sons of the Emperor.

Another large Tenet is the focus on war rather than specialisation. The stem of this Belief is unknown however its theorized that the study of war as a whole connects to there other belief that humanity is the rightful ruler of the galaxy and are the pinnacle of life therefore have the capability to master the art of war.

Upon the throne in the Valde Malus Arca is the inscription of the tenet they most hold dear:

"They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines such that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear."
— God Emperor of Mankind

Ceramite arm

The most prominent and open part of the Order of Knights is the bare arm. Every member of the Emperor's Knights keep there left arm bare as a mark of respect to the Emperors original design for the Astartes. Red is only ever painted over the gauntlet as a mark of sergeant.

Auramite

for officers and other high ranking members of the Emperor`s Knights, they are given a small amount of auramite to fix into there armor in any way they wish. for example the right arm or helmet.

Armor connection

With the Belief that humanity is the ultimate force in the galaxy, they believe that once placed in power armor they should not remove it in front of anyone bar a select few serfs. This is to ensure they most adhere to the Emperors original design for his Astartes.

Chapter Recruitment & Training

The recruitment of the chapter is done almost entirety on Calibros Prime. The planet, due to its nature for chaos incursions, already has a hardy populous but the testing to become a neophyte is hard. All Squires (aspirants) are sent to Helgate where they are given a single knife and a briefing before being sent to a 800 mile stretch of forest known as Saltus Armigeri (forest of squires). Its entirely off limits to the general populous, The squires are told to return to Helgate alive. Within the forest are Wolves and the feared dirae wolfs a larger breed of the normal native wolves. Furthermore, within the forest are also captured cultists set loose and armed. only those able to face the wolves, kill the cultist and navigate the terrain back to Helgate are made Neophytes.

As Neophytes however, there main focus is on squad deployment. Due to the fact that the aspirants focus on individual skill the next skill to train is squad deployments. To do this scout squad will do scouting missions and ambushes that focus on squad tactics and ensuring everyone will do there roles well. Because of this, Knight Sergeants within neophyte squads will leave the practical leadership to neophytes, only interfering when necessary and doing advising, this is to allow neophytes to learn how best to use there skills in combat.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Gene-Seed of the Emperor's Knights is a secret known by 4 people in the Imperium. The chapter master, the chief apothecary, the head Chaplin and Belisaruis Cawl. Though some believe that the original closeness that Cthonia had to Calibros may have something to do with the Gene-Seed. Though the chapter vehemently denies this.

However, this doesn't mean the chapter has no Gene-Seed flaw. The chapter is afflicted with a curse of unknown origin called "the Longing"

The Longing

  • Stage 1 - A Brother Knight would begin with, oddly, a benefit. They would begin to gain natural skill in combat becoming more prominent in war. But each brother knight was also develop a felling of unworth. Causing that Brother to in most cases increase there training and preform brash actions to show themselves to the Emperor.
  • Stage 2 - A Brother Knight would then start to go from brash to outright dangerous. That brother would spend days maybe weeks locked in training, that feeling of unworth shift to simply a feeling of emptiness. Interestingly however, psykers find it harder to see the presence of that brother in the warp.
  • Stage 3 - Finally, a Brother Knight will end up becoming nothing more than emotionless, faithless, soulless killers. They lose all of there humanity and will kill everything including, in some cases, themselves. As well however they will lose all presence in the warp as if there very soul destroyed. Though dismissed as a rumor, there is a story of a Knight suffering with the longing and Blood angel suffering from the black rage fighting each other, perfectly reenacting Sanguinius and Horus's final battle.

Deathwatch Service

"Ah the long vigil, there is no greater honor than facing the Imperuims greatest foes side by side with the greatest."
— Mavericus Metus to a Neophyte

Service to the Deathwatch is a rare and grand honor for any knight to hold but is also a hard one to gain. To even be considered for service a Brother Knight must show incredible skill in combat and gain the attention and recognition of there Brotherhood Master, Artisan and Reclusiarch. Afterwards they would be sent back to Helgate and undergo 6 trials:

  1. Trial of Strength - The Brother must, whilst unarmed and unarmored, face a Dirae wolf and kill it.
  2. Trial of Marksmanship - The Brother must hit cultists from 1km (0.62 miles) away with a bolter.
  3. Trial of Knowledge - The Brother must identify and find the weakness off mutiple xenos rapidly.
  4. Trial of Survival - The Brother must return to Helgate after being dropped in saltus armigeri and being chased be a squad of fellow Astartes.
  5. Trial of Faith - The Brother must sit unarmored in the Valde Malus Arca with the Tzalmavet for 1 day.
  6. Trial of Combat - The Brother must fight the Knight Grand Master in one on one, the exact parameters to pass this trial are unknown.

Notable Members

  • Servestus Garviel - The second Knight Grand Master of the Knights, he is a stoic and legendary commander who has fought in countless battles namely the war for the Cadian gate. He is the current bearer of the Guardian of Calibros and the master of Lunarbane.
  • Calacar - The fourth and arguably greatest Knight Champion, Calacar is known for his odd style of combat wielding a heavy bolt pistol and power knife. But hes also known for his mental fortitude, having withstood the corruption of the Tzalmavet for the same length of time as all prior Knight Champions combined.
  • Mavericus Metus - Brother Mavericus is a Deathwatch veteran and the only brother to have defeated Vasian Baile in the Trial of Combat. He fought with axe and shield slaying countless xenos and being promoted to watch lieutenant. he recently returned to his chapter after the Deathwatch came to support the Emperor's Knights during the war for the Cadian gate.
  • Leonus Fabian - Lenous earned his rank by fighting for 5 days and 5 nights non stop during the War For the Cadian Gate. He was a veteran of the 1st Brotherhood and one of few who survived there massacre. But after this, Lenous kept a burning hatred for the xenos. He took every opportunity to kill as many xenos as he could with his sword and shield, though never served amongst the Deathwatch. He most recently went on a personal pilgrimage to Terra but joined the Ultramarines 2nd Company in fighting of hive fleet leviathan in the Recidious System.
  • Vasian Baile - First Grand master Vasian was a merciless and brutally effective commander. He was however incredibly well respected by his chapter and by the people of Calibros. He's was most well known for the Protection of Nandario where he fought and was slain by Erabus, sparking the rivalry between the Knights and the Word Bearers.
  • Honored Dreadnought Calipso - Calipso was one of the Astartes kept from the Horus Heresy by Cawl. After being reawoken it was found that his stasis pod had been damaged through mismanagement and in turn Calipso had lost bodily functions. He was placed in a Redemptor Venerable dreadnought and serves as the chapters Master of Rites. He gives his knowledge of the Great Crusade and Heresy to his brothers. But on the battlefield, he wields a Burning red Plasma Annihilator and a Hulking power sword whilst yelling ancient litanies.
  • Verakai - The first Knight Champion Verakai had a faith comparable to those of the Ecclesiarchy which stood very much his favour upon his retrieval of the Tzalmavet. He was a vicious warlord who killed many cultist and safeguarded Calibros. That was until an ascended Word Bearer fought Verakai. The greater daemon broke the Tzalmaet’s chains and Verakai was tainted. He handed off the Tzalmavet and chased the warband into the eye of terror.
  • Lezila Caros - The human ship-Master of the fleet, Lezila is a young headstrong Person who isn't unknown to disregard there Astartes superiors. they are an Aggressive and Aggressively effective admiral and ship commander, using the Astartes for boarding actions and the Emperor's Swords hundreds of attack craft to overwhelm the enemy. Though they have been known use the flagship as a ram.

Chapter Fleet

  • Emperor's Sword (Emperor Class Battleship) - Capital vessel.
  • Conquers Vengeance (Battle Barge)
  • Eternity's Silence (Battle Barge)
  • The Martyr Verakai (Battle Barge)
  • Vengeance of Baile (Battle Barge)

Chapter Relics

  • Guardian of Calibros - Within the Gene vaults on Helgate, a long dead Astartes stood guard wearing ancient Cataphracti Terminator armor. Belisaruis Cawl merged this armor with Mk X Gravis to make the suit known as the Guardian of Calibros, This suit bears resemblance to Aggressor armor with a left arm mounted Onslaught Gatling Cannon and the right arm would generally feature a power fist. However after Knight Grand Master Servestus Garviel's arm was severed, the power fist was kept in the Valde Malus Arca and replaced with his bare cybernetics.
  • Lunarbane - a Master crafted power spear. Who the crafter is is unknown . The spear was found buried in the heart of a Dirae wolf turned greater Deamon. Said wolf attacked a major hive city but when the Knights arrived, the beast was dead with the spear deep into the creatures heart. The spear is far to big for any normal man to pick up and the Deamon wolf was twice the size of a Thunderhawk. though Garviel swore he saw a space marine in all white terminator armor of an ancient pattern with the emblem of a creature eating a moon glowing in the trees. though all picts where corrupted with unknown reason. nevertheless, the relic is a beautiful spear with a resemblance to traitor primarch Alpharuis' spear.
  • Tzalmavet - the signature sword of the Knight Champion. The Tzalmavet is a blade that seeps with corruption so even the blade is purple. But oddly enough the sword looks like a Necron weapon. The blade has a level of conscious and has corrupted the last owners. Its now in the hands of Calacar.
  • Dirae Sword - The Dirae Sword is a relic Land Raider Ares and the head of the chapters vehicular armory. It was created by order of Verakai during the Reclamation of Calibros. The land raider is a dangerous beast on the battlefield hence the name.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colours

The Emperor's Knights primarily wear purple-coloured power armour as their primary colour with the secondary colour being gold, which is applied to the faceplate, shoulder pauldron trim, and lower leg armour. The Aquila or Imperialis affixed to the plastron (chest guard) is also gold in colour. the left arm is bare Ceramite. an in the case of veterans and officers, Auramite is given to part of the armor generally the helm or right arm.

The Chapter badge is proudly displayed upon the left shoulder pauldron. A large white squad specialty marking, stencilled on the right shoulder pauldron inset, indicates a battle-brother's assigned combat role on the battlefield (Fire Support, Close Support, Battleline, Veteran and Command). A large gold-coloured Gothic numeral stencilled on the center of the squad specialty icon indicates squad assignment. The rank of sergeant is shown by a red coloured fist.

Company assignment is indicated by the colour of the left poleyn (knee guard) in accordance to the proscribed colours of the Codex Astartes (1st Company - White; 2nd Company - Yellow; 3rd Company - Red; 4th Company - Green, etc.). A large white coloured Gothic numeral stencilled on the left poleyn further helps with easy identification in the heat of battle.

Chapter Badge

The Emperor's Knights Chapter badge takes the form of a stylised gold-coloured winged sword, reminiscent of the might First Founding Dark Angels.

About: Emperor's Knights

"They really do live up to there name don't they?"
— Lezila Caros speaking to Lord Lieutenant Biapheal
"Hm...Phearon would have liked you."
— Erabus to the bleeding out Vasian Baile
"The Knights are a test...Nothing more...Yet I feel a sense of pride at there achievements...Perhaps more can be done with that."
— Belisaruis cawl in a audio doc on the Emperor's Knights
"I have seen many sons of the Emperor. I have seen many Astartes. Terra ive seen Many Astartes Face unbelievable odds and live. That is common in this grim darkness. However, to many Astartes will spare no thought for the Emperor's children...In some cases the Emperor. Yet that is not the role of a Space Marine. We are his sword of holy retribution and ive never seen someone let alone a chapter embody the principles of being his solider. You...Brother...Do. "
—Captain Boltfist Ultramarine 3rd company to Servestus Garviel
