Overview[]

The Drowned Spire Massacre, occurring in early M36 within the Mournveil System, was a catastrophic conflict triggered when the Marines Malevolent pursued a fleeing mortal Chaos remnant force to Obscurum. Seeking to trap the traitors, Captain Arkan Veyth ordered an orbital bombardment of the Drowned Spire Spaceport, resulting in millions of civilian deaths and significant losses among Imperial forces. Outraged by the indiscriminate destruction, the Third Company of the Hounds of Argos and the newly established Order of the Iron Rose turned on the Marines Malevolent with ruthless vengeance, engaging in brutal orbital and surface skirmishes.

The escalating violence threatened to destabilize the entire system, prompting the intervention of Inquisitor Olyris Kaest and the neutral Chapter Eclipsed Sons, who enforced an immediate cessation of hostilities. The Chaos remnant was completely annihilated, but the event left lasting scars: the surviving Marines Malevolent were forced to withdraw in disgrace, and a deep, enduring enmity was established between the Hounds, the Iron Rose, and the Malevolent forces. The massacre remains a stark warning of the consequences of unchecked zeal, impulsive command, and vengeance within loyal Imperial forces.

History[]

In early M36, a mortal Chaos remnant force composed of heretic Guardsmen, rogue voidsmen, and independent cultists devoted to the Ruinous Powers fled from nearby systems and sought refuge on Obscurum, one of the more industrialized worlds of the Mournveil System. They attempted to conceal themselves within the underhives and the orbital hub of the Drowned Spire Spaceport, using the dense urban sprawl and orbital traffic to evade pursuit.

The Marines Malevolent arrived in-system and initially coordinated with the Third Company of the Hounds of Argos, led by Decurion Varran Therio, along with the Order of the Iron Rose, a newly established Ecclesiarchy militant chapter, and the local PDF. Early strikes focused on purging isolated cultist cells within the underhives while boarding parties attempted to secure the orbital platforms. The operation began as a standard containment mission, but tensions between the Chapters quickly arose.

Captain Arkan Veyth of the Marines Malevolent grew increasingly impatient with the perceived delays and believed that the Chaos remnants’ only viable escape route was through the spaceport. Despite repeated warnings from Decurion Therio, the Sororitas, and PDF commanders that the port was already effectively sealed, Veyth ordered a full orbital bombardment intending to obliterate the traitors and deny them any chance of fleeing.

The resulting strike was catastrophic. The Chaos remnant, already cornered by local Imperial defenses, was completely destroyed, but millions of civilians died and dozens of Hounds of Argos and Order of the Iron Rose warriors were killed. The devastation also destroyed significant infrastructure at the spaceport, crippling Obscurum’s orbital traffic and planetary economy.

When the true scale of the massacre became clear, Decurion Varran Therio and the Third Company of the Hounds, enraged at the deaths of their battle brothers and the civilians they had sworn to protect, turned fully against the Marines Malevolent. Fighting alongside them, the Order of the Iron Rose, newly forged by the Ecclesiarchy and possessed of zeal that rivaled even the Hounds’ fury, joined in the pursuit. Together, they launched a relentless campaign of retribution. Orbital strike pods and boarding torpedoes tore into Malevolent vessels, forcing them into cramped corridors where the Hounds and Sororitas slaughtered their former allies with chainswords, bolt pistols, and ferocious martial precision.

On the surface, PDF and Arbites units refused to cooperate with the Malevolent forces and actively engaged their strike teams, coordinating with the Hounds and Sororitas to contain and eliminate any surviving units. The battles were brutal and merciless. Hounds of Argos moved as unstoppable predators, each kill driven by vengeance and righteous fury. The Sororitas, newly established and zealous, were even more terrifying, executing surgical strikes and showing no hesitation to strike down any Marine Malevolent who resisted. Every encounter became a bloodletting, forcing the Malevolent into a desperate retreat through collapsing orbital lanes and exposed shuttle bays.

The escalating conflict threatened to destroy the system. At this critical moment, the Inquisition, led by Inquisitor Olyris Kaest, entered the Mournveil System accompanied by the Eclipsed Sons, a neutral Chapter known for their disciplined mediation. Kaest, already the established Inquisitorial authority in Sub-Sector Argos, demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities. Reluctantly, the Hounds of Argos and the Order of the Iron Rose halted their pursuit, allowing the surviving Marines Malevolent to withdraw under strict Inquisitorial supervision.

By the end of the conflict, only a small, shattered contingent of Marines Malevolent survived and fled the system in disgrace. The Hounds and Sororitas, bloodied and exhausted, swore that any future presence of the Marines Malevolent in the Argos System would be met with immediate extermination. The intervention of the Inquisition and the Eclipsed Sons prevented a full-scale war, preserving the stability of the Mournveil System while cementing a lasting enmity between the Hounds, the Order of the Iron Rose, and the Marines Malevolent.

Aftermath[]

The Drowned Spire Massacre left Obscurum devastated, with millions of civilian casualties. While the Chaos remnant was destroyed, orbital bombardments and skirmishes inflicted heavy losses on both the Hounds of Argos and the Order of the Iron Rose. The Marines Malevolent were routed, scattering into hidden enclaves in void-space. All wargear and relics were seized by the Hounds, including the Malevolent’s battle barge Ravager’s Maw. In a final, symbolic act of vengeance, the Hounds destroyed the Malevolent’s fallen gene-seed, preventing the chapter from recovering and cementing their dishonor. The captured barge was renamed the “Oblivion’s Fang”, now serving as the flagship of the Hounds’ 3rd Company and a permanent reminder of their triumph over the dishonorable chapter.

In the wake of the battle, Obscurum began a slow and painful recovery. Imperial engineers, aided by the Sisters of Battle and local authorities, worked to restore essential infrastructure, clear orbital debris, and reestablish basic services. Fields and cities scarred by bombardment were gradually rebuilt, while the surviving populace remained wary, their faith in the Emperor tempered by the scale of destruction they had witnessed.

The Sisters of Battle, led by Canoness Julerine Palane, openly celebrated the destruction of the Malevolent’s gene-seed as divine punishment, tending to the wounded while framing the act as an example of the Emperor’s justice. The Eclipsed Sons hailed it as holy enforcement of righteousness, reinforcing the sacredness of loyal Astartes’ duty. Other Imperial factions quietly acknowledged the severity of the Hounds’ actions and the strategic necessity of their campaign.

Across the wider Wiper Imperium, the conflict was met with a mixture of relief and unease. Many hailed the decisive Loyalist victory as a demonstration of the Emperor’s will and the importance of discipline among His warriors. Others, particularly planetary governors and Administratum officials, viewed the destruction and civilian losses with concern, wary of the precedent set by such uncompromising zeal in enforcing order.

Within the Marines Malevolent, the defeat spurred a strict internal purge, and careful reassessment, as survivors prioritized survival and regrouping. Meanwhile, the Hounds of Argos reinforced their armories and regional dominance, integrating recovered relics and wargear, including their newly acquired flagship, Oblivion’s Fang, now the pride of the 3rd Company, into their already impressive arsenal. The destruction of the gene-seed and the renaming of the barge became enduring symbols of the Hounds’ victory. The Sisters and Eclipsed Sons carried the memory of the massacre as both a warning and a lesson, a testament to the consequences of dishonor and unchecked aggression, even among the Emperor’s most faithful servants.
