The Cruor Hornets are a 4th Founding Successor Chapter of the noble and heroic Blood Angels Space Marine Legion through the Flesh Tearers. Born from the lineage of Sanguinius, they bear the genetic legacy of their Primarch and share many of the characteristics and traits of their forebears. The Chapter has turned renegade after a treachery during their penance crusade, but still hopes to serve humanity and protect it from the Black Legion and the remnant forces descended from the Arch-Traitor Horus. The chapter is defined by their fiery fervour and relentless pursuit of justice, often willing to put everything on the line to protect the humanity in spite of their secession from the Imperial fold.

Chapter History

Founding and Early History

The Cruor Hornets were established during the Fourth Founding, an era marked by numerous Space Marine Chapters' emergence. Their earliest records are well-documented, as they were among the earliest Successor Chapters of the Blood Angels to be recognized as such and added to the Sanguinary Brotherhood in this founding. The period shortly after this witnessed the Cruor Hornets' rapid growth of influence and the formation of its own distinct identity.

Beliefs and Doctrine. True to their Blood Angels heritage, the Cruor Hornets were filled with a passionate fury and had a burning desire to protect the Imperium from its many threats. Their devotion to the Emperor was unwavering adamantly believing in the Emperor as their grandsire and ultimate cause. As such they took on their role as the Emperor's chosen defenders in their system of Imperial space with the utmost seriousness. They share their parent chapter's dual nature, with a noble and compassionate side contrasted by their ferocious battle rage when provoked.

Notable Campaigns and Achievements

  • The Culling of Xirian Prime (Unknown Date): The Cruor Hornets successfully purged the once-faithful Hive World of Xirian Prime, which had fallen to heretical beliefs in the Chaos cult known as the Cult of the Accursed Oneness. Their brutal campaign cleansed the planet and reinstated the Imperial Creed, bringing hope to the loyal populace.
  • The Stand at Murmillis Pass (Unknown Date): The chapter made a legendary last stand at Murmillis Pass, holding off a massive Ork WAAAGH! long enough for Imperial reinforcements to arrive. This act of self-sacrifice inspired neighboring forces and earned them the moniker "The Paschal Hive."

Fortress-Monastery

The Cruor Hornets' Chapter have no homeworld anymore as their former world where they were once stationed has become a barren wasteland by the vicious bombing the Ordo Hereticus enacted upon it. Instead, they are fleet-based with their mobile fortress-monastery being their flagship known as The Hivecladron serving as the chapter's training grounds and headquarters. The planet is a desolate wasteland with the mangled remains of its once sprawling hive cities and colossal fortifications hollowed out by erosion from irradiated sand and dust, these bleak surroundings provide the chapter with a grim reminder of the sacrifices they made for the Imperium only to be met with betrayal by those they swore to protect.

Chapter Organization

The chapter follows the Codex Astartes in terms of company organization, with ten companies including specialized roles such as Assault, Devastator, and Tactical squads. They maintain a close-knit brotherhood and a strong bond among their battle-brothers, similar to their parent chapter.

Recruitment

The chapter selectively recruited from the bloodlines of noble families within their assigned territories. Candidates were chosen not only for their physical prowess and genetic compatibility but also for their strong sense of honor and dedication. This selective process ensures that those who become Hornets are not only formidable warriors but also exemplars of military virtue.

Gene-Seed

The Cruor Hornets' gene-seed remains remarkably stable, and they have been fortunate to avoid the taint of the Red Thirst to a significant extent. However, like their parent chapter, they do have an increased tendency to succumb to the violence and fury of the Black Rage, though this is seen as a ritualized sacrifice in the name of their eternal duty to destroy Chaos.

Combat Doctrine

The Cruor Hornets adhere closely to the doctrines of the Codex Astartes but with similar modifications to others among the scions of the Blood Angels Legion. They are known for their speed and aggressive assault tactics, excelling in close combat and lightning-fast strikes from aerial assault on jump packs. Their distinctive approach is marked by their use of specialized assault squads, equipped with jump packs and melee weapons, to deliver swift and devastating blows to their enemies.

Notable Figures

  • Chapter Master Aurelion Cruor, "Silver-Handed": A charismatic and deeply inspiring military leader who fought to the utmost limits of his body, Cruor is known for his unwavering dedication to protect his men known for sacrificing both of his own arms in a duel with a Chaos Lord of the Noxclad Banished. He has led the chapter through numerous campaigns and has shown a remarkable ability to rally his warriors, even in the direst of circumstances.
  • High Chaplain Valourys Arnaan: A fierce warrior and spiritual guide, Arnaan is known for his powerful sermons and unwavering faith in the Sanguinar Cult. He leads the chapter in their spiritual rites and ensures that their faith in the Emperor remains unshaken.

  • Aegis of Valiant Resolve: A unique storm shield carried by the chapter's Lord Commander. It is adorned with the symbol of a hornet in mid-flight dripping with blood. It can withstand incredible punishment, reflecting the chapter's unyielding resolve even against the enemy.

Relations with Other Chapters

Allies

  • Flesh Tearers - In spite of their dissent from the Imperium the Cruor Hornets have maintained strangely strong ties with their parent chapter, the Flesh Tearers and by extension the Blood Angels other Successor Chapters that share their lineage since their arrival at the Devastation of Baal. Their continued dedication to the Emperor and Sanguinius combined with their willingness to make sacrifices for their kin have earned them an unspoken respect and even perhaps admiration among those of their cousins who fight alongside them. However, their uncompromising nature in battle has also led to some clashes with more diplomatic or cautious chapters of the blood.
