The Crucible Serpents are an eccentric and reserved 6th Founding chapter of the Adeptus Astartes descended from the lineage of Vulkan's Salamanders. They were created in order to guard the world of Umbrarma from Chaos threats in the Segmentum Pacificus. They are adamant believers in the Promethean Cult and are very rare among the Astartes in that their aspirants are created by the chapter themselves in gene-forges via artificial insemination and vat-growth. The Crucible Serpents perceive themselves as a manufactured weapon in the same vein as the vat-muscle implanted in an officer or a humble lasgun, albeit they perceive themselves as a vastly more complicated form of this idea, and for this reason, they do not put their lives above those of humans.

Chapter Recruitment

Rather than directly recruiting aspirants, all Crucible Serpents were originally created from vat-growing an embryo from a gene-line proven to successfully survive the process of gene-seed implantation. This allows for an exceptionally high compatibility rate and intense genetic selection pressure so that with each generation the Crucible Serpents can strive to be more optimized for defending the human populations. This is generally done by taking the germline cells of two potential parents, mass-producing vat-grown offspring and allocating some males to undergo gene-seed implantation, and others to grow to adulthood so their germline cells can be used to create a new generation of aspirants.

It should be noted that this does not allow the chapter to produce aspirants at an accelerated rate as vat-grown humans with accelerated development generally create malformed Astartes or they simply die at a much higher rate. The Crucible Serpents cannot clone these aspirants either as the gene-seed either rejects the clones or clones made from specimens with the gene-seed already implanted will rapidly degrade.

Chapter Beliefs

One of the strangest idiosyncracies of the chapter is their belief that due to the fact they are vat-grown and that they cannot interbreed with humans after gene-seed implantation, the Astartes of the Crucible Serpents are fundamentally not human beings but were created by the Emperor to defend humanity. This means that unlike the Salamanders the members of the Crucible Serpents chapter due not intermingle with humans. instead, they see humans in some ways as above them, as true beings rather than organic mechanisms of warfare. A Crucible Serpent will gladly lay down his life for even one human civillian if the battle.
