The Cobalt Leviathans are a Loyalist Space Marines Chapter founded in the 38th Millennium from the gene-seed of the White Scars. The Cobalt Leviathans are known for their nomadic nature and brutally swift method of combat, not unlike their progenitor Chapter. The Tribes (Companies) of the Cobalt Leviathans are always on the move, choosing instead to have their home world defended only by the Ocean Guard, Auna (serfs) and Togi (Neophytes) of the Chapter. Lead by a lone Vasa Ngaru, bearing the title of Lord of the Triumphrat, they are entrusted with the greatest responsibility and the hardest burden, to defend their hearth and home the fortress-monastery Pakari. That is not to say that the Tribes of the Cobalt Leviathans do not return home, for at the end of every campaign they return to tell their deeds through ritual chant preserving the oral tradition of the Chapter and of the homeworlds.

While carving these stories across the stars fighting for the Imperium, each tribe must find their own road to glory. Having been given full discretion by their Rangatira (Chapter Master) all Kapeteni (Captains) forge a path of their choosing being the ones to solely decide when and where to dispense the Emperor's Justice. Most Kapeteni choose to follow the tides of war and the etherium towards their next battle, and by doing so the Tribes of the Cobalt Leviathans still honor their people and their way of life. The Chapter is aimless in their waging of war though, for each Kapeteni at the conclusion of a campaign will begin their search anew, for as soon as their pilgrimage to the Pakari is complete the Tribes will once again depart for the stars.

Chapter History

Not long after their founding did the Cobalt Leviathans find themselves thrust into the crucible of galactic conflict. Setting out from Mars the newly formed Cobalt Leviathans found themselves lost in a freak warp storm, disorientating their Navigators and leaving the fleet flying blind. Making an emergency translation the whole of the newly formed Chapter was displaced close to the world of Cypra Mundi. By the grace of the Emperor they found there the Ultramarines and White Scars preparing to reinforce Corillia and its surrounding worlds against Warmaster Abaddon and his 13th Black Crusade. Without even hesitating Rangatira Aleki contacted the two first founding Chapters and pledged his forces to join in the counteroffensive to reclaim the system from the Forces of Chaos.

Expecting to face overwhelming forces both the Ultramarines and the White Scars agreed to allow this new Chapter fight alongside them. So it was for their first campaign that Cobalt Leviathans found themselves fighting alongside their progenitor Chapter the White Scars. Eager to prove themselves to both the White Scars and the Imperium as a whole the Cobalt Leviathans thrust themselves to the hardest fights that they could find. Carving their place as Adeptus Astartes with the blood of traitors and heretics. As the campaign progressed the marines of the Cobalt Leviathans found their stride developing a style of combat that they could claim was all their own. Leaving the tanks, troop transports and terminators in the center of their forces they would bait their foe into committing to a full attack on their seemingly slower and more exposed troops. It is then with the foe commited do the fast moving elements of the Cobalt Leviathans forces swoop in from both flanks and ambush their foe.

Seeing that their younger kin fought in ways similar to their own the White Scars often sent squads to aid in these flanking attacks, lending the strength necessary to shatter the spine of any ambushed foe. As the purge continued a clear bond formed between the two brother chapters, many friendships formed and working in tandem a great number of heroic victories occurred. However by the campaigns conclusion there was not a member of either side of the conflict that did not know the name Rangatira Aleki, First Chapter Master of the Cobalt Leviathans.

With Abbadon the Despoiler leading his forces away from Corillia his control over its more chaotic elements waned. Without the warmasters guiding hand the daemons of chaos ran rampant seeing their own glory or to carry out their own nefarious plans before they were banished back to the Warp. Free of his oath for a time Giggath led his Khornate army on a hunt to find the White Scars and either turn or break them. Catching them in preparation the army of Khorn charged into the heart of the White Scars’ gathering lines. So it was that without any warning the Great Khan Nasan found his forces in a bitter melee with the daemon’s forces. Preparing to order his men to fall back the Khan paused hearing something new, over the clamor of combat a battle chant none had heard before drummed its way across the field:

"By the blood of the Khan!"
"Defend our kin!"

Then like a wave upon crashing to shore the Cobalt Leviathans descended upon the foe, striking swiftly from the behind the daemons lines they come to their brothers defense. Not a moment too soon for the great Bloodthirster Giggath had forced his way to the forefront of the melee and Nasan, Great Khan of the White Scars, found himself battling a foe he couldn’t fight alone. Spotting his plight Aleki rode his bike into the towering side of Giggath, choosing to abandon his noble mount to save the fellow Chapter Master’s life. The distraction proved efficient, for as Giggath turned to howl in outrage and pain Nasan severed its head from torso, slaying the fiend. With their lord sent back into the immaterium the remainder of demonic army too was sent screaming back into that twisted realm once more. As a thank you for riding out to their aid as well as to cement the bond between brother chapters the Great Khan Nasan gave Aleki a gift, The Blade of the Sea and Sky. This Relic Blade’s unique shape mirrored the very sigil of the Cobalt Leviathans first company and the Great Khan knew that it was destined to reside with their successor brethren. From that day on every Rangatira has wielded this blade in defense of the Imperium.

Chapter Founding

Founded during the 23rd Founding, the so-called "Sentinel Founding", the Cobalt Leviathans were intended to become a crusading Chapter like many others during that era, and during their first years after creation this was the case. Spending only a standard Sol decade as a crusading force the fate of the Cobalt Leviathans would change forever with the re-discovery of the Gurges System and its surrounding worlds in the Segmentum Pacificus. By edict of the High Lords of Terra the Chapter was re-tooled to protect the Imperiums' interests in this newly reclaimed area of the galaxy. Continuing on as if the discovery was never made the Chapter spent their time crusading while Magos Biologis found a suitable world for the Cobalt Leviathans to claim as their own.

The Emperor truly smiled upon the Chapter as an exploratory fleet found something truly unique within the system, a trio of oceanic death worlds bound together by interlocking orbit, one of the few stable triple orbital bodies to exist in the universe. Testing of the populace began immediately upon the discovery of the trio for it was the fleets task to find a final home for the Cobalt Leviathans. As time passed all three worlds were found to share a genetic purity and an aggressive nature brought on by the harsh tribalistic lifestyle of the people, all of which would be needed should the Cobalt Leviathans claim these worlds as their home.

Upon the testing completion the Adeptus Mechanicus began their plans to build the future Fortress Monastery of the Cobalt Leviathans. While some of the technology was brought from Mars itself the forge world of Vulmas was given the honor to complete the undertaking. One hundred and twenty standard years would pass as the Adeptus Mechanicus constructed not only a suitable Fortress Monastery for the Chapter, but a modified Ramilies class starfort, nesting the latter in the heart of the three planets celestial dance. Where it could serve as dry dock and forward base.

Finally the day had come and the Cobalt Leviathans were called back from their crusading in the Segmentum Pacificus to see their new home. For the first time since their battle versus the arch enemy the whole of the Chapter was located in one location. Brothers who had not seen each other in close to 200 years came together once again to tell their victories, mourn the lost and meet their newest brothers. Descending to their new Fortress Monastery and the world's surrounding it the marines of Cobalt Leviathans found what they had been missing for so long, a place to call home.

Dishonor on Vithion V

Astropathic signals reach the Pakari that WAAAGH! Nitgrokh was closing in on the Vithion System in numbers rarely seen. Rallying the whole of the Tribe of the Triumphrat Rangatira Aleki set sail into the void to answer the call to war once again. Arriving before the WAAAGH! Aleki went about solidifying their defenses as best he could. For while he and the Tribe of the Triumphrat were able to make it in time no other reinforcements would arrive. Choosing to sacrifice the other worlds, Aleki alongside elements of the Imperial Guard, Navy and the planetary defense force dug in on the Hive World Vithion V. Vowing to defend the lives of its 100 billion citizens these stalwart defenders of the Imperium turned their gaze skyward ready for what was to come. By the time WAAAGH! Nitgrokh entered system the defenders of the Imperium were as ready as they could be to hold against the tide of foul green xenos. While the other worlds in were quickly demolished the world of Vithion V stood strong, her first layer of defense being fought within the void.

Led by the Leviathan's Grace, flagship of the Cobalt Leviathans, the elements of the Imperial Navy and remainder of the Chapter's fleet lead a deadly dance. Choosing to take the enemy head-on the Navy was left to blockade the planet itself while the Chapter sailed forth and sought to swiftly decapitate the foe. The cumbersome ships of the Orkish fleet could not keep pace with the lightning fast movement of the Cobalt Leviathans. One after another Kroozers were brought down, their lives ending in balls of quickly extinguished flames. Despite their success, however, the Orks seemed to be endless in number, and as time passed the Cobalt Leviathans' fleet was forced back into the gravity well of Vithion V.

Despite holding the Orkish fleet at bay in high orbit, landers, inevitably, broke their way through towards the surface of the planet. While the orbital gun embankments shot them down in their thousands plenty still managed to break through the clouds of flak fire. Soon Orkish tribes started to gather outside the hives of the world, only to find themselves falling into the jaws of a lurking leviathan. Divided into squads the members of the Cobalt Leviathans quickly cut down any major group that made landfall, choosing to meet their foe on the field rather then hunker down behind the various Hive city walls. This tactic would prove effective until Keokoa, fleet mistress of the Leviathan's Grace, contacted Rangatira Aleki and informed him that their position was no longer tenable and the Chapter alongside the Navy would be retreating from high orbit. Calling back the members of his Chapter Rangatira Aleki enacted the second phase of the defensive plan, break the remainder of the Orks against the walls of the Hive cities.

With this newfound freedom of orbit the trickle of landers quickly became a flood, with the green menace establishing footholds all across the toxic fields of Vithion V. Drawn by instinct, Nitgrokh landed his personal Rok on the outskirts of Hive Kransic where Rangatira Aleki himself commanded from the fore. Rallying to their Warlord the Orks landing upon Vithion V found themselves drawn towards Hive Kransic and what would be the biggest 'scrap' on the planet. Seeing this gathering stage as an opportunity to end the WAAAGH! once and for all Rangatira Aleki decided to gather his forces and ride out in an attempt to take Nitgrokh's head.

This sudden attack caught the gathering Orkish forces off guard, allowing for the Cobalt Leviathans to push their way through to Nitgrokh's personal Rok, Land-Smasha. Little did the Cobalt Leviathans know that Nitgrokh was waiting for them, having seen some of the Chapter's tactics he kept his best Boyz and Nobz within Land-Smasha in order to ambush the hummies. These reserves burst forth as Rangatira Aleki reached the base of the Rok, descending upon him and his squad with choppas in hand seeking to slay the master of the Leviathans. Despite these attempts however Rangatira Aleki managed to kill his way clear of the descending mob that had surrounded him and his Ranga Leo (Honor Guard). Though over half of the Ranga Leo was left slain the Chapter Master forged onward to find the Warlord himself deep inside Land-Smasha. Once again, though Nitgrokh would prove his cunning, for within the heart of the Rok Nitgrokh awaited his "guests" alongside a contingent of Meka Nobz.

Quickly they fell upon the marines and the brutal brawl that ensued saw Rangatira Aleki standing alone among the piles of dead Orks and marines alike with Nitgrokh sitting above on a throne of rusted metal laughing at the scene before him. Stepping down from his throne Nitgrokh in broken Gothic thanked Rangatira Aleki for the show but it was time for a "true scrap". With that warning Nitgrokh surged forward sweeping his choppa and his power klaw at the Chapter Master, a vicious battle ensued with Nitgrokh and Rangatira Aleki taking and trading blows. As the brawl continued Rangatira Aleki felt himself starting to lose ground. Realizing he was on the ropes Rangatira Aleki made a desperate play, allowing a chappa blow to connect and become wedged in his own chest Rangatira Aleki triggered a pair of Krak grenades, intending to take Nitgrokh out with himself. While sound in theory, the Ork managed to turn at the last moment with only half of his body being blown apart by the explosion. With the death of Rangatira Aleki and the majority of the Cobalt Leviathans alongside him the Orks quickly overran the ground forces on Vithion V and the remaining fleet managed to break off into the warp before they are overwhelmed. Though the Cobalt Leviathans alongside the Imperial Navy were forced to retreat the Orkish threat was blunted and WAAAGH! Nitgrokh was delayed, if only for a time.

The Hunt for Nitgrokh

As they limped back to the Gurges System the remainder of the Cobalt Leviathan fleet, led by the Leviathan's Grace, managed to send an astropathic message ahead of themselves to warn the Chapter of their defeat on Vithion V. Upon receiving word of this tragic loss to the Chapter Laki Anae, the Guardian of the Triumphrat at the time, sent out the Val'Aiga, the order that all tribes were to return to the Pakari upon the completion of their campaigns. With such an order given the tribes of the Cobalt Leviathans across the galaxy fought with barely contained fury for they all knew that the Val'Aiga was only to be called should the Rangatira fall in battle. Within one standard Terran year the whole might of the Chapter resided within the Pakari, eagerly awaiting the orders from the Pulea Fa'eva as to what the Chapter was to do. They were not long waiting for no more then two cycles passed before Kapeteni Elisara was elevated to Rangatira. His first decree as the new Rangatira was a crusade against WAAAGH! Nitgrokh to avenge the first lord of their Chapter as well as the Tribe of the Triumphrat. Another half standard year would pass as favors and oaths of friendship were called upon to aid in the reclamation of the Chapter's honor and Vithion System. With a war-host consisting of Imperial Guard and Navy, Adeptus Mechanicus, White Scars, Ultramarines, and Knight House Bellmere, the retribution fleet departed from the Gurges intent to bring the Emperor's Justice to Nitgrokh and his ilk.

Breaking from the warp two and a half standard years after the battle for Vithion V the retribution fleet found themselves in the center of the newly reformed WAAAGH! Nitgrokh. While this sudden conflict at the Mandeville Point was not fully expected the warriors of the Imperium were ready, having been prepared to fight upon breaking from the Warp. Seizing the advantage dozens of Ork ships were obliterated as the retribution fleet fired from all weapon bays. With the blessing of the Emperor in this first salvo the Ork Flagship Landtakka was crippled leaving her dead in space. Under covering fire from the rest of the fleet the whole of Tribe Lernaean and Helicoprion along with the newly elevated Rangatira Elisara and his small force of Ranga Leo boarded the Landtakka to reap their vengeance.

Tearing a bloody scar through the corridors of the ship the Cobalt Leviathans left no greenskin alive, from the smallest Gretchin to the largest Meganob all felt the fury their actions had wrought. Through it all however Nitgrokh was nowhere to be seen. While the Tribe of the Lernaean and Helicoprion divided into squads to spear deeper into the battleship Rangatira Elisara and the Ranga Leo sought to purge their way towards the bridge and Warlord Nitgrokh. As Rangatira Elisara and his men approached however not a single Ork was to be found, it was as though the upper decks of the ship were deserted. Sensing a trap and warned of Nitgrokh's cleverness Rangatira Elisara decided it was time Nigrokh had a taste of his own medicine.

Just outside the command bridge Rangatira Elisara ordered his guards not to aim for any Orks but to shatter the observation windows to send their foeS tumbling into the void. Mag-locking themselves to the floor, Rangatira Elisara threw open the doorway and in the instant before his men fired observed the trap laid bare. For inside, across the entire bridge, stood dozens of Meganobs and Boyz ready to unleash a torrent of fire at any who passed through the doorway. However it was not these threats that held Rangatira Elisara's attention, nor was it Warlord Nitgrokh, who lounged in his throne of scrap metal choppa resting in his lap, the Blade of Sea and Sky on his hip. For his attention was drawn towards his former Lord and friend Aleki whose armored corpse was chained spread eagle behind Warlord Nitgrokh's throne, held like a twisted banner declaring the Warlord's power. Then the searing light of plasma evaporated the windows and the void came rushing in. Within seconds the Cobalt Leviathans found themselves alone staring at the half-mechanized form of Nitgrokh.

Standing from his throne Nitgrokh pointed his power klaw at Rangatira Elisara in a silent challenge and crushed his way forward, shuttering the deck with every ponderous step. Surging forward Rangatira Elisara motioned for the Ragna Leo to stay back, for it was only in personal combat would the honor of the Chapter be returned. As the two foes charged forward the sound of their titanic struggle was stolen away in the quiet of the void that had claimed the bridge. Back and forth Rangatira Elisara and Warlord Nitgrokh traded blows each seeking to destabilize the other and send them careening into the void beyond. Suddenly Rangatira Elisara leapt from the deck, choosing to allow the pull of the fleeing atmosphere aid in his gambit to behead the Ork. With the added speed Warlord Nitgrokh was unable to react and the fight ended in one swift motion. Airborne, Rangatira Elisara quickly grabbed onto the very chains holding Aleki in place to stop himself from being torn from the ship.

The battle over the Ragna Leo quickly searched the various levers and buttons to find one that closed any sort of shutter to attempt to seal the bridge once more, eventually calling for the aid of a Sila to shut the bridge. While it took some time eventually rickety iron shutters slammed down pressurizing the bridge once more. Crashing to the floor Rangatira Elisara cast his gaze around seeking the body of Warlord Nitgrokh. Still standing ridged and anchored to the floor by twisted xenos mechanisms Nitgrokh looked as though he could still be alive. Moving forward Rangatira Elisara reclaimed the Blade of Sea and Sky and at last cut the chains holding Aleki as the Ragna Leo gently lowered the body to the ground. Their honor and relics restored the order for all Cobalt Leviathans to withdraw from Landtakka was given so that the Landtakka could be demolished properly. Though it took time the news of Nitgrokh's death spread across the WAAAGH! petty infighting quickly broke out and any coordination the Orks once had vanished. The naval battle quickly ended in an Imperial victory within the Vithion system with Rangatira Elisara himself slaying the last Warboss on Vithion V within Land-Smasha declaring the planet and the system free from Orkish taint.

Slaughter on Haria IV

Since the Imperium's first encounter with the vile race that would come to be known as the Tyranids countless worlds have fallen prey to the all consuming maw that is the Hive Mind. Due to their mercurial nature even those that have fought the Tyranid before can easily find themselves set on the back-foot by the ever evolving nature of the xenos. It is this rapid adaptation that led to the Slaughter on Haria IV.

Having the dubious honor of being the first recorded encounter with the Hive Fleet that would come to be designated as Hive Fleet Behir, the Hive World of Haria IV in 084.M41 found itself hopelessly outnumbered. As the Hive Mind strangled any connection to the Warp casting the final shadow on the doomed world below the honor guard of Cobalt Leviathans sworn to defend it set about making their final plans. Knowing that they and the world they were stationed on was doomed the Cobalt Leviathans of squad Ieti set about recording and preserving their last stand so that even in death they could still serve.

It wouldn't be until four standard decades had passed before an exploratory fleet for the Death Watch would by chance find a capsule containing the helm of Ieti himself and the precious information that it contained.

The Cleansing of Chov B

Having been overthrown by a rebellion the loyalists still remaining upon Chov B sent out a call for aid. Answering their summons the Tribe of the Mosasaurus having completed their pilgrimage back to the Pakari answered the call for aid.

On the final approach to the system Kapeteni Iokua received an astropathic message from the Black Templars strike cruiser Dorn's Might. Greeting them Chaplain Dieter requested a meeting with Kapeteni Iokua to better explain the ongoing situation on the planet below.

Stepping into the launch bay of the Exultant Skies Chaplain Dieter was immediately felt revulsion. In stark contradiction to the ships of his own chapter the one before him lacked any sort of religious ornamentation, instead alcoves and sections of the ship were filled with scrimshawed bones and hand woven tapestries depicting unknown monsters all while distinctive smell of salty air assaulted his senses. Being led through this different world he would eventually find himself face to face with Kapeteni Iokua, the Captain equivalent extending his arm in friendship. Taking his forearm Dieter was thrown off yet again as Iokua pulled him into a brief embrace, one gauntleted hand clanging against the opposite pauldron.

Attempting to regain his composure before snapping at this display of overt brotherhood Dieter launched into a full breakdown of the status of the world and its importance to the Black Templars. This world having once played host to a recruitment keep was the reason that Chaplain Dieter along with thirty of his brethren were assigned to take back the world for the Imperium and reestablish it as a recruiting ground for the Templars once more. As for their foe the rebels seemed to be too coordinated for this to have been a spur of the moment rebellion with multiple middle tier officials even joining the rebel cause. These officials and the majority of the leadership for the rebellion had decided to hide within the primary Hive-city on the surface, Isengar. Advocating for an immediate drop pod insertion Dieter believed that by cutting the head from the snake the body would wither. Iokua readily agreed and for the first time since boarding the ship Dieter felt some sort of respect for this younger Chapter.

Descending on contrails of fire drop pods of black and white brought death to those that dared betray the Emperor and scorned his gifts to mankind. Splintering hive spires like so many dried sticks they came, vengeance incarnate, the angels of death. The work went quickly and though the rebels never seemed to falter in the face of certain death die they did. Curiously as well the rebels seemed to shout praises to the Emperor as they charged into battle, calling him the Emperor Astra. As they ascended the principal spire was slowly turned into a charnel house, as every man and woman seemed to take up arms in their attempt to stop the marines from reaching the pinnacle of the hive. But reach it they did and as melta charges melted the doorways to slag both Chapters charged forward seeking to end the rebellion with bolter and blade. Instead of finding heretical officials cowering behind their desks they discovered something even more sinister, a broodlord crouching in the remains of the governors throne flanked by dozens of Purestrain Genestealers. Meeting the marines charge more genestealers poured from hidden tunnels and air vents from across the room, quickly outnumbering the angels of death. Neither Chapter was want to back down however and simply moved faster forwards with Iokua and Dieter meeting the broodlord in combat. Dieter engaging the powerful xenos with his power maul while Iokua guarded his back preventing the other genestealers from taking advantage of any opening that may appear. As the brutal melee continued the overwhelming numbers of the genestealers began to reap a heavy toll, spurred into a divine rage Dieter sought to break his foe before its children and ending the threat once and for all.

Taking a swipe of the broodlords primary claws across his pauldron they stuck there for a fraction of a second, it was enough. Bringing his maul into a backhanded swing the energy field surrounding the weapon burned its way though the tough outer carapace and pulped the creatures cranium. With the death of their patriarch the remaining genestealers began to scatter, seeking to hide once more within the twisting walls and tunnels that made up hive Isengar. Despite the victory only seven marines of the original fourteen remained, deciding the city too tainted to be purged Iokua ordered all squads back into orbit.

From aboard the Exultant Skies orbital bombardment was conducted on the Hive-city below reducing Isengar to naught but dust and ash. Before returning to his own ship Chaplain Dieter thanked the Cobalt Leviathans for their aid and bid them to take a standard, tabard and chain from his order, to signify that the Tribe of the Mosasaurus would always be considered allies of the Black Templars. Furthermore he requested for the Templars have the right to finish the cleansing of the world so the recruitment keep could be restored once more. Determining that Dieter had sufficient numbers to kill the remaining genestealers, the Cobalt Leviathans agreed and began to depart the system. As the Exultant Skies approached the Mandeville Point the respective leaders wished each other well, then the Leviathans sank back into the depths of warp space.

A Warning Within the Waves

The future is a maliable and fluid thing, one action can change the life of millions for eons to come without the actor knowing what they have done. As such when one catches glimpses of what is to come while scrying into the immaterium they must be weighed accordingly.

As Abbadon's 13th Black Crusade gathered itself near the Cadian Gate visions of destruction started to plague the members of the Vasa Ngaru. The tides of the ocean worlds running red with blood, the Pakari in ruins the subterranean vaults broken open, a throne of skulls capped with the standard of the Tribe of the Triumpherat crowing it, these and many more like them harried those that could pierce the veil of reality. Locking themselves in conference with one another in ethereal form across the galaxy it was determined that these were glimpses of future possibilities, and it fell to the Vasa Ngaru to stop them from coming to pass. It fell to Mauga as Ariki Vasa Ngaru to bring the concerns of the order before Rangatira Isakko and request that action be taken.

Ever pragmatic Rangatira Isakko could tell that these visions and the porents that they foretold spoke of a time of trials fast approaching the Chapter and the Imperium at large. After a brief and empassioned meeting Isakko concluded that for the Chapter to survive they must stand as one, enacting the Van'Val'Aiga Protocol he recalled all forces back to the homeworlds. Only having been called to order one other time in the history of the Chapter, the protocol demanded that all members of the Chapter immediately break off whatever task they were involved in and return to the Pakari. Across the galaxy the Cobalt Leviathans abandoned allies old and new alike informing them that while they are loath to leave them the Chapter calls and they were forbidden from refusing. While few fully understood the meaning of their words the Cobalt Leviathans withdrew from the battlefield and began their voyages home.

While this act wounded the Chapters pride and reputation none would suffer more then those of the Tribe of the Helicoprion. Having heard of the great despoilers next Black Crusade forming Isakko had ordered the whole of the Helicolrion to make for Cadia and aid the Imperium in her defense. Scant weeks before the true battle was to be joined was the Van'Val'Aiga ordered. Ignoring the orders and requests of the other commanders, who demanded that the Chapter stay and fight the Tribe took to the Warp. Later once the news of Cadia's destruction reached the Chapter the marines of Helicolrion would blame themselves, believing that if they had been present the disaster of the Cicatrix Maledictum would have been prevented.

Having been caught in a warp flow the Tribe of the Helicoprion arrived months sooner then expected allowing them to make it with little time to spare. For as they made anchor in high orbit over Estroia the lifeless void of space split in two spilling forth a crimson light as the Cicatrix Maledictum opened.

War of Sea and Sky

"Taku! For once the foe has come to us and in their folly they believe that the worlds that lie before them are naught but easy targets. They believe that we will cower behind our walls and let them ravage the worlds we call home. Oh, how wrong they are. You all know where to go, what needs to be done. So ride, ride forth and let us show these worshipers of broken beings what the sons of Jaghatai are made of."
— Ariki Vasa Ngaru Mauga, Master of the Tide, prior to the War of Sea and Sky

As the Cicatrix Maledictum split its way across the galaxy the thin veil of reality fractured, allowing the forces of the Ruinous Powers to rampage at will. It was through this perforation that Oghoth Bladegazer led his war-fleet seeking blood and skulls for his lord Khorne within the material realm. Placing his fate as well as the fate of his assembled warriors into the hands of Khorn they plunged headfirst into the newely opened rift in reality hoping that glory, blood and skulls would be found wherever they ended up. As fate, the gods, or just sheer luck would have it Oghoth and his horde found themselves expelled within the Gurges system, home of the Cobalt Leviathans. Thrilled that not only had Khorn delivered them safely into realspace but into a populated system as well Oghoth ordered his forces forwards to bring the fight to the three planets orbiting one another, the worlds of Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria.

Despite having time to prepare for the defense of their homeworlds the Cobalt Leviathans found themselves alone staring down a ragtag fleet thousands strong blazing a path towards the core of their home. Rangatira Isakko having made the decision days earlier had chosen to abandon the outer defenses of the system condemning the crews to certain death in the face of the Chaos horde. All knew that the various star forts and defensive stations within the Gurges system would be quickly overran as soon as the overwhelming numbers and firepower of Oghoth’s horde came into range. As the opening salvos of what would be the War of Sea and Sky began various star forts simply vanished from existence as the Chaos controlled Emperor-Class Battleship Chained Fury opened the fight with twin shots from its Nova Cannons. Eager to reap more blood from their foe the horde descended upon the remaining fortifications like a pack of starving wolves. While the forces of Chaos tore a bloody scar through the defenders of Gurges one cannot say that these forts crewed only by Auna, serfs, and Kua’ar, servitors, did not reap an impressive toll of their own. Resigning themselves to their fate and resolute in their dedication to the Chapter and the Emperor not a single fort or station would go quietly into the night, choosing instead to roar their defiance against the Arch-Enemy. Captains competed to see who could claim the most ships praising their crews even as their hulls were breached and their bodies tossed into the void. Most would manage to take down a dozen vessels each before succumbing, with the star fortress Thee’la even claiming the Strike Cruiser, Drowned in Blood by choosing to detonate its core as the cruiser drifted by the near dead station.

Though the valiant defense of the outer system would earn its place in the oral history of the Chapter the majority of Oghoth’s horde made their way through relatively unharmed. Through it all Rangatira Isakko ordered that the fleet remain stationed in orbit of the worlds, locked in the triple gravitational pull of the systems only planets the full might of the chapter fleet waited on the far side waiting to strike. For despite all the physical defenses, save the Ramilies Class starfort the Waea, defending the Chapter had been destroyed another less visible defense existed, one that would claim more lives than any man-made fortification.

Approaching at haste Oghoth and his minions either failed to recognize or care about the unique formation that the planets of Aecor, Sorius and Estoria held. Relying on the sensors on the Chained Fury to alert them to any changes they forged ahead unaware that a new threat had arisen. And though many within the horde had navigated the stars for millennia none present within the Chaos fleet had ever had to deal with contending gravity wells like those found at the heart of this system. This mistake would soon spell disaster for the marauding army of the blood god, as the overlapping gravity wells pushed and pulled at the fleet causing severe damage to larger ships and even outright crumpling the smaller vessels into nothing more than scattered debris. This was not the only threat to the invading fleet however, as while contending with the rolling waves of gravity assaulting their craft the gathered fleet of the Cobalt Leviathans broke from their locked orbit and charged into their foe. As comfortable navigating the swells of gravity as they were the waves below the shipmasters and mistresses knew launched a rapid assault on the fleet attempting to bludgeon its through to get to the worlds below. The opening gambits over the void battle was finally joined in earnest as the Leviathan’s Grace unleashed a deadly broadside into the leading elements of the Chaos fleet, rupturing void shields and gutting hulls into the empty void. Not to be outdone the forces of Chaos headed by the Chained Fury answered in kind bringing low the strike cruiser Crushing Depths causing the reactor to go critical detonating the ship and claiming all hands, taking with her three fully equipped squads from the Tribe of the Heliobat atomizing the marines in their boarding torpedoes. This orbital brawl would continue for more than seven standard hours as the forces of Chaos with sheer weight of numbers forced their way deeper and deeper into the safe zones of the worlds below. Signaling for a retreat and regroup it was with a heavy heart that Kapeteni Esera, Master of the Fleet, surrendered the space above the worlds to the foe. Not before leaving two parting gifts, the first a series of void mines along the clear routes to the Waea. The second the remaining marines of the Tribe of the Heliobat left in wait to defend the last remaining starfort nestled in the heart of the triple body orbit, ready to extract a heavy toll from any who’d dare the forts defenses.

Like a twisted parody of the usual storms that racked the ocean worlds did the Oghoth’s horde come, mortal, daemon and marine alike seeking only one thing, the wholesale slaughter of the populace below. Though this task would be easier said than done however as landmass on the worlds was limited and the forces of Chaos would not find the slaughter they craved with the scattered tribes of the worlds. Instead their forces congregated at the various Cobalt Leviathan keeps on Sorius and Estoria as well as their Fortress-Monastery, the Pakari on Aecor, gathering in their slavering number ready to breach the walls and claim the skulls of those that resided inside. Having allowed their enemy to begin establishing their foothold bringing down bulk landers of troops and corrupted beasts to the surface the Cobalt Leviathans rode out taking to land, sea and sky to assault their foe. From hidden holds within islands across the globes they came with chants on their lips and fury in their hearts the defenders of man, his angels of death earned their name. Catching the coordinating groups of the forces of Chaos unawares once again the Cobalt Leviathans cut a bloody swathe through their ranks bringing low marines, mortals and chaos spawn alike with lightning fast precision. Never ones to be cowed however the worshipers of Khorne struck back with a fury that no sane being in the universe could ever hope channel, bogging down the rapid assault bringing what was once a rapid attack into a staggering melee. Across the Triumphrat the sons of the ocean were brought low as they cut their way through seemingly countless daemons and mortals attempting to find the linchpin that would end the struggle.

It was not below that would turn the tide however, rather it was from above. For while disgorging troop and material within low orbit of Aecor the Chained Fury was hit by a rapid boarding attack by the Tribe of the Lernaean. Having deployed in secret from the battle barge Vivid Aqueous and riding through the void their boarding torpedoes were undetectable save for at the last moment when boosters engaged bringing a full company of marines into the fray. In rapid order the various squads of the tribe split up and quickly captured key objectives for the majority of the soldiery and crew had descended to the planet below seeking to slaughter in the name of Khorne. It is here from the very flagship of the Chaos fleet that the retribution blow would come though neither side knew it at the time. As the Cobalt Leviathans set about clearing the ship the marines noticed at various junctures doorways would randomly seem to open and paths leading behind well defended palisades would appear causing a slaughter of the few defenders that remained, sections unoccupied by the Leviathans would simply depressurize venting dragging hundreds of Chaos corrupted thralls into the void to be incinerated on reentry. Kapeteni Apelu leading the assault on the bridge found in place of the command throne an undulating mass of flesh and blood, tendrils coiling out to the various systems controlling the ship. Reacting to this new threat the creature let out an air piercing squeal summoning dozens of flesh hounds from the immaterium to defend this corrupted ship master. After a short but brutal engagement these lesser daemons were dispatched. Standing before what at one point in time would have been a fellow space marine Kapeteni Apelu plunged his power glaive into it's center, ending its existence. Not even a moment after the flailing tentacles had settled on the deck did the ship react beneath them. To the shock of both sides all guns along the breath and width of the ship opened fire into the waiting Chaos ranks, her nova cannons alone claimed two battle cruisers that were flanking her deploying their own twisted cargo. Under no command save her own the Emperor-Class Battleship broke from orbit and set about breaking the spine of the Chaos fleet. Suddenly seeing their for break away from print emboldened the remaining forces of the Cobalt Leviathans fleet. Burning forward they returned to extract their vengance and finish their foe. Having lost the core battleships of the fleet the remaining Chaos forces fractured, falling away from the world in a hasty retreat. Still unable to bring her to heel the Chained Fury harried them out of system, only letting up after the last ship had fled into the Cicatrix Maledictum. It was only then that control was regained as she became inanimate once more.

On the surface none of this was known however, as twisted magics had corrupted the vox waves bringing communications at any extended range to a halt. So it was that those that defended the hearths of the Cobalt Leviathans were prevented from knowing that the tide had turned in their favor. Lacking this vital information Rangatira Isakko ordered his forces into a staggering retreat, intending on using the undisciplined aggression to string out the forces of Chaos across. Jeering at their retreating foe Oghoth and his minions charged after the defenders of the Imperium laughing and shouting blasphemies in their direction, it was the last thing many of the horde would do. For while the main body of Isakko’s forces were seeming to retreat a secondary force had opened the throttle of their speeder mounts, ranging further ahead they split into two groups and started to loop back the way they had come.

Ignorant of this and their vision narrowed by bloodlust few within the ravaging horde noticed that the Cobalt Leviathans were not going their full speed, fewer still noticed that the army was being strung out in the open, and none noticed the jaws of the trap closing in around them. This state of ignorance would not last long as with engines and voices roaring did the two split groups of marines finish their loop crash into their scattered enemy. In a few short moments the aggressors found themselves on the defense as the Leviathans reaped their worth in blood. The shock of this attack would pass however as Oghoth Bladegrazer began to rally his army around him starting to bring coordination once more to his forces, that was when Isakko struck. For in the moment that the flanking forces struck Isakko had begun a similar maneuver, this time though like a spear cast from the Emperor’s own hand this line of Cobalt Leviathans ran down the heart of the horde. So it was that the rallying forces were struck by another hammer blow of an attack, this time seeking to sever the head instead of breaking the body.

As is the way of things that Rangatira Isakko found himself face to face with Oghoth Bladegrazer and like recognized like, each knowing that should the other fall that the battle would permanently turn in their favor. Bringing his plasma pistol to bear Oghoth attempted to end the issue with a single burst, Isakko foreseeing the move hauled his trusted bike in front of himself allowing the noble machine to take the blow meant for himself. Now dismounted and on an even footing Isakko surged forward bringing his hooked relic blade to bear only for it to be deflected by Oghoth’s chain axe. Dueling back and forth it was clear that they were an even match for each other save for the fact that Oghoth never seemed to tire, the blessings of the blood god extending his physical might to a degree no mortal could hope to match. Sensing that this fight needed to end soon or he would not prove to be the victor Isakko took a desperate gambit. Lunging forward his hooked blade slid just over Oghoth’s shoulder just as the Chaos champion’s axe bit hard into his own torso, chewing muscle and bone from his body. Gritting his teeth Isakko gave one final pull on his blade, the hooked end having ended up just behind Oghoth’s neck ended his roar of victory before it had the chance to fully form. Even before the severed head had rolled fully off of his shoulders Oghoth’s daemonic allies were sent screaming back into the warp as their bond with the chosen of Chaos had been broken. In short order the remaining forces of the blood god were slain by bolter and blade the worlds of Aecor, Soirus and Estoria were cleansed of those that worshiped the dark powers.

Beyond the Emperor’s Light

Despite their victory over the forces of Chaos the Cobalt Leviathans found themselves standing at the lowest point in their history. With only 382 members in active service with another 32 undergoing various treatments in attempts to restore their combat readiness the casualties sustained in previous campaigns as well as in the War of Sea and Sky the members of the order were being stretched to their breaking point. While their homeworlds had been secured there was little time to rest as the full might of the Cicatrix Maledictum was still raging cutting off the light of the astronomicon information on the Imperium and their allies needed to be gathered. Due to the defense of their home various systems and planets under the protection of the Chapter had been left to their own devices and it was time to check their status. Rangatira Isakko wounded from his duel against Oghoth took charge of his Chapter from the bed of an apothcarion table as his body healed from the damage it had sustained in his final gambit. Ordering the Tribe of the Archelon to take to the warp and investigate the readiness of their allies in the region, Forge World Vulmas and Knight House Bellmere, to assess their combat readiness and petition Vulmas for aid in repairing the savaged fleet. To the tribes of Coelacanth and Dunkleosteus Isakko ordered that investigations be carried out along their sections of Segmentum Pacificus as to better understand what exactly was going on in the galaxy. At Isakko’s request the navigators assigned to the Chapter fleet notated the more stable routes within the sector and the realms that the Leviathans watched over, seeking ways to return to contact with the Imperium at large as the Emperor’s light could not pierce the miasma that the Great Rift had created.

Over the next five standard years information about the status of their realm would filter back to the Chapter. While the Emperor’s light may not have shown in this darkened land he had not full abandoned them, for the Cobalt Leviathans were not the only ones standing against the darkness. Allies were found and a defensive front was created, for the first time since the opening of the Great Rift hope existed. These long lost allies allowed for the Cobalt Leviathans to resume recruitment and refit brining multiple war machines, star forts and void ships back into service. Techrocists arriving from Forge World Vulmas also began the cleansing of the Chained Fury now renamed Unbreakable Resolve to honor its machine spirit that despite hundreds of years of warp exposure and torture refused to bend to the will of Chaos. Within a standard decade years she would be deemed fit for service and assigned to Kapeteni Apelu and the Tribe of the Lernaean to serve as their new flagship, a task that she appeared to take to with gusto.

Thirty-five standard years would further pass without contact from the Imperium.

After those first turbulent years the forces of the Gurges Sector came together to form a grand alliance, The Pacificus Shield. Together Knight House Bellmere, Xanov 502nd and 275th guard regiments, Forge World Vulmas and the Cobalt Leviathans formed a bulwark of light against the encroaching darkness. Presenting a unified front the Pacificus Shield defended the five dozen populated systems that made up the Sector. It was under this guiding hand that new planetary defense forces were raised and trained, raids by Orks, Drukari, and Chaos repelled and a shard of Hive Fleet Leviathan broken. Though the resolve of the Pacificus Shield never wavered the endless years of conflict were beginning to extract their toll upon all its members with many secretly nursing the belief that the Imperium had fallen and no aid would ever breach the Great Rift.

Servitor Listening Outpost TS-M895 posted outside the Cicatrix Maledictum would receive an encoded message stating that a crusade fleet would be traveling through the Great Rift in the direction of the Gurges Sector, any Imperium forces were to be ready to receive Lord Commander Roboute Guiliman. One week and three days before this information was collected by Mechanicum personnel Servitor Listening Outpost TS-M895 would be struck by a random piece of space debris destroying its memory core rendering the message undecipherable.

The Avenging Son Returns

Having concluded a recent preventative strike against a forming Ork WAAAGH!! The Pacificus Shield regrouped above Onkion III, homeworld of House Bellmere, aboard the ‘’Leviathan’s Grace’’ to discuss the next actions required to defend the region. At this gathering of equals, reflecting in miniature the Council of Tera, that requests for aid, notification of threats, and status of planets under their protection were discussed and assessed. In the middle of this standard meeting a warning klaxon rang out across the bridge, multiple signatures detected exiting out of warp space at the Mandeville Point. A quick clearing of the signal revealed that tens of thousands of unknown signatures were due to breach in six hours’ time. Not knowing who this force was a full defensive mobilization was ordered with the fleet assuming positions of aggression bracing for the inevitable confrontation.

Had a battle ensued only tragedy would have been its legacy as the fleet approaching was the Indomitus Crusade, come at last to find the Imperial remnant within the Gurges Sector. Disaster was averted for Roboute Guiliman searching for the defenders of Gurges had first gone to the home worlds of the Cobalt Leviathans and having gathered an escort there pressed onward into the Sector to meet with the Pacificus Shield. Choosing a vessel of the Cobalt Leviathans own fleet to be the first to breach at the Mandeville point it was the newly restored strike cruiser Crushing Depths who brought with her the Emperor’s Light once more to the darkened realm.

So it was that the Lord Commander of the Imperium joined the leaders of the Pacificus Shield aboard the Leviathans’ Grace, congratulating them on their well-coordinated defense of the this pocket of the Imperium and offering aid in their time of need. Given to the adepts of Vulmas the STC plans for newly found and created arms and armor were provided along with an official write of dominion over any asteroid belt within the sector proper, giving official seal for a practice already in place. For House Bellmere and the guard of Xanov men and material were offered but both politely declined the influx of recruits though gladly accepted the material. It was to the Cobalt Leviathans that the greatest gift to the Pacificus Shield was given, the near full Chapters worth of battle hardened Primaris space marines. Sharing the same genestock as the Cobalt Leviathans these new brothers were greeted with open arms, for while they may not hail from the exact same background they were kin and warriors all and to the Chapter that was all that mattered.

Remaining only two standard years to oversee the construction of various outposts, waystations and defensive fortifications across the whole of the sector, Roboute Guiliman set his sights to continuing the crusade forwards. Charging Isakko with not only defending what he holds but brining conquest to further lost realms of man Guiliman departed the Gurges Sector, leaving behind him a revitalized pocket of Imperial light.

Forming the Reclamation Crusade

Having accepted these new Primaris brothers into their ranks Isakko decided to test their mettle in the crucible of war. Distributing these recent additions across the whole of the Tribes he tasked both standard and Primaris alike to treat one another as brothers both on and off the battle field. Though some within the council of the Pulea Fa'eva denounced the idea, instead advocating for these Primaris be given their own tribe Isakko stood resolute and as Rangatira his word was law.

It was not just the leaders of the Chapter that foresaw issues as the debate of how to handle these marines not born of the ocean worlds raged among the Taku. The brothers of the Chapter found themselves split on their view of the Primaris, some saw them as imposters simply wearing the colors of the Chapter mocking them and degrading their legacy. Others viewed these new brothers as just that, brothers, for while not born on the ocean worlds of their home they seemed to want to embrace the culture and style of their kin.

The notion of being imposters however would be quickly banished for Isakko declared a crusade beyond the held realms of the Gurges Sector, seeking to bring worlds back into the Imperial fold. From across the Pacificus Shield men and material were drawn as for the first time in since the Great Rift opened the forces of the Imperium were going on the offensive. Leaving behind the Tribe of the Plesiosaur and the Tribe of the Tylosaurus to act as the rearguard and defenders of the Sector Isakko took the remainder of the Chapter beyond the Sector into lost space. So it was with the might of the restored Cobalt Leviathans and the strength of the Pasificus Shield at his back did the Reclamation Crusade begin.

The Reclamation Crusade

With long term warp travel impossible without the light of the Astronomican the Reclamation Crusade took place in bursts. Jumping from system to system in the attempt to locate and reclaim the lost worlds of humanity. As the crusade knew that worlds that once belonged to mankind existed here for in decades before the opening of the Great Rift trade and flowed through the Gurges Sector and her neighboring systems. It was only a matter of time before they were located once more

  • Asteroid Belt CTCR-101318: Becoming the first staging point outside the Gurges Sector Asteroid Belt CTCR-101318 contained within it vast deposits of metallic ores and other precious metals. While technically under control by Forge World Vulmas the fortifications built within the largest of the asteroids has been cleared for use for all members of the Pacificus Shield.
  • Nylorac System: The first populated system discovered by the Reclamation Crusade the Nylorac system consists of four planets all of which housed human habitation. Having survived through sustained inter-planet trade and sheer luck the long lost planets welcomed the Imperium back with open arms. It was here that the first substantial forward fortifications were erected upon Nylorac Primus, presenting a shield for the system.
  • Odir's Vengance: Upon discovering a lone verdant planet orbiting a yellow sun the Crusade felt assured that this was a gift from the Emperor for if legends held true this is what Tera looked like in times long since lost to history. Before descending to the planets surface however it became clear that it was infested by feral Orks. Requesting to lead the cleansing of the planet Odir of House Bellmere landed on the planets surface, taking with him twenty knights armed with flamers and plasma armaments. Pursuing the roving bands of feral Orks the surface was cleansed of Orkish taint and left with most of its bio systems intact. Renamed Lanu-mea it was designated for use as an agri-world at the conclusion of the crusade.

Isakko's Gambit

"By the Emperor's guidance and Mechanicus ingenuity were these new brothers created. While not born on Aecor, Soirus, or Estoria the blood of the Khan beats in their veins and the rage of the ocean swells in their hearts. We have accepted them into our ranks but now it is time we accept our fate as well. I will cross the Rubicon and all of you shall join me."
— Rangatira Isakko, Lord of the Triumphrat, addressing the Pulea Fa'eva

Unknown to all save for the adepts chosen by Fabricator-General Coretta Nazal on the Forge World of Vulmas and Rangatira Isakko the Cobalt Leviathans were to undergo further changes upon the conclusion of the Reclamation Crusade. For Isakko had requested that the forge world aid in the creation of the necessary components required to allow a first born Astartes to cross the Rubicon and become Primaris. Leaving behind a contingent of Kawhia, Apothecaries, to help oversee the project, the fruits of their labor were to be reaped upon the Chapters return from the Reclamation Crusade.

After two decades of conquest the Reclamation Crusade was declared complete. The final battle taking place within the Telviri System where the Pacificus Shield defeated the hated Iron Warriors and reclaimed the system for the Imperium.

Though the Chapter had left divided in opinion of their Primaris brethren they returned united as one, for not only had they proven themselves in battle but also in tradition. With many going out of their way to learn even the most specific of battle chants and stories so to better relate to their kin. With multiple squads demanding the right to undergo the Trial of Rapunga so to properly earn their place among the ranks of the Chapter.

Seeing this shift within the Tribes Isakko felt the moment was right for the next stage of his plan to be set into motion. Sending the long awaited signal, the Kawhia alongside techpriests of Vulmas returned to the Chapter's homeworlds bringing with them enough material to fulfill the Rangatira's plan.

Calling for a gathering of the Pulea Fa'eva, Isakko announced his plans for the future of the Chapter. He informed his brothers that they all would be crossing the Rubicon to better serve the Emperor and the Imperium in the years ahead with Isakko himself being the first to undergo the process. Deeming it only fitting that he take on the risk before he subjected it upon others.

Though the theory of the process had been reviewed and re-reviewed hundreds of times by dozens of the Kawhia and techpriests, in practice none were sure how the process would turn out. Placing his faith in the Chapers Kawhia and the expertise of the Cult of Mars, Rangatira Isakko willingly placed himself into an induced coma. Taking their Rangatira to the medical bays within the Pakari Isakko underwent an intense and invasive surgery the likes of which none on this side of the Great Rift had seen before. Under the ministrations of four Kawhia and six techpriests Isakko's body endured eighteen hours of restructuring and grafting. After the last wound was sown shut Isakko, still in his forced coma, began the process of regrowth. Two standard weeks would pass before emerging from the chambers of the Kawhia came Isakko reborn. To the elation of the Chapter as well as the Pacificus Shield the first of the Cobalt Leviathans had successfully crossed the Rubicon, now the work could begin in earnest.

Taking the reigns of his Chapter once again Isakko lead the Primaris already created out to the maintain the defense of the Gurges Sector while ordering a full conversion of the forces he left behind. Over the course of the next two standard years the remaining 415 First Born marines would all cross the Rubicon with all save fourteen surviving the process. This number managed to be kept this low due to the intense preparation work underwent by the Kawhia as well as the sheer practice of numbers. By the time the last marine had undergone the process the Kawhia had managed to reduce the time required from eighteen hours down to eight and the man power down to one Kawhia and two tech-priests.

Chapter Homeworlds

Estoria

Estoria

The trio of worlds that the Cobalt Leviathans call home are truly shining jewels in such a dark galaxy. For not only is this triumphrat of worlds rare for their odd orbital pattern they have even a more unique aspect to them, the three are all ocean worlds. That is not to say that these worlds are a paradise for as with all worlds of their kind the dark below and what lies within is enough to fill normal mortals with a sense of terrible foreboding. This feeling is well founded for in the cold crushing depths all manner of monstrosities lurk forever seeking new prey. It is these leviathans of the depths that have lead the Imperium to classify the trio as Death Worlds. Given this nature it truly takes a hardy people to survive let alone thrive against the cruel mistress that is the ocean and her children. For one can only be truly safe from these monsters should they find themselves on one of the few landmasses scattered among the never ending waves. Due to being scarce commodity these safe havens have caused no small amount of conflict among the human settlers on each of the worlds. These people were quick to learn however that whenever battle broke out between two tribes both sides suffered. For to survive in their harsh homeland tribes needed to always be ready to battle the ocean and her children for neither cares if their prey is weakened only that it is consumed.

This need to maintain a tribes numbers caused the peoples of Aecor, Soirus and Estoria to seek out new avenues on how they warred on one another. To this end great summits of all the tribes on each world were called to find a better solution. It was from these collectives that the various rituals that would come to be known as Masni Fesui were formed. Once per cycle every tribe gathers on the largest island of their respective world to put forth one warrior to fight on their behalf in single combat. With these youths selected the main event of the Masni Fesui begins. A tournament among the chosen, each battling for the right to exchange lands or goods. To maintain that no tribe faces oblivion due to one warriors’ mistake only fair exchanges may be made between the two tribes, for honor dictates that no tribe should take advantage of another. And while a fair exchange is set, and will be upheld, the loser of the contest by unspoken tradition is expected to give slightly more than what was agreed upon to the victor in difference to their loss. As the battles continue on and the warriors still victorious dwindle in number the amount each exchange is worth grows. Until eventually the tribe with the last warrior standing holds the rights to the very land that these battles were fought on. It is then that Masni Fesui come to an end and the tribes part ways once more heading for their newly exchanged lands with their hard won goods. That is all but the victors, for they alone are allowed to stay on the island to reap the bounty that is held within.

It is due to the brutal nature of personal combat, that Masni Fesui brings out the best in already hardened youths giving the Chapter a glimpse of what this raw talent could become. With this intent in mind the Cobalt Leviathans support this tradition, sending a member of their order to oversee and moderate the proceedings. This task falls to the Guardian of the Triumphrat, a member of the Vasa Ngaru the Chapter’s spiritual and mystic guides, for he is not there to only moderate but to observe and select the best youths for the Chapter. This sacred duty has him be present every cycle on each of the worlds to monitor the Masni Fesui. A member of the Vasa Ngaru is always chosen for the role of Guardian of the Triumphrat for only a they can peer into a man’s soul to see what he is truly made of, all his hopes, dreams and desires laid bare with a single look. Of the few thousand combatants across three worlds that attend only one hundred are chosen, with the Vasa Ngaru taking any who prove their worth in body and soul. It is not unheard of, however, for a young warrioress to be chosen by the Vasa Ngaru and while these brave women cannot be inducted into the ranks of the Chapter itself those that pass the test of spirit are not left behind. Instead they are taken along with the young men to the Pakari and handed over to the Auna(Serfs) to begin their own path. For while the men begin their trials to become true Neophytes of the Chapter, the women are trained in the defense of the Pakari or how to command within the Chapter Fleet. As such it is not unheard of for the truly exceptional among them to ascend to the rank of Shipmistress, commanding some of the mightiest Battle Barges within the Chapter's fleet.

The People of Aecor, Soirus and Estoria

Classified as ocean death worlds Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria seem to dissuade humanity's existence, as such the men and women who live on their surface are tempered and hardened. A life hard lived the people of the Triumphrat know little in the way of luxury, instead the struggle to survive keeps them constantly on edge. While there is little truth in the rumors that a child born on these worlds wields a weapon as soon as they can walk it is not that far off the mark.

Living a nomadic life the people of the Triumphrat find themselves fighting daily against the terrors that lurk in the depths of their worlds. Constantly staving off attacks on fishing expeditions or as their tribes traverse the wide ocean waves the culture of the Triumphrat revolves around that of the warrior. Young or old, man or woman all are expected to defend the tribe from any attack that may come its way from the leviathans that lurk within the depths.

With this harsh ocean faring lifestyle a written language was never developed, instead a deep oral tradition was formed, passing on the history and teachings of the tribe. It is expected that all members of the tribe know their history for the dead can only live on in the afterlife if someone still holds onto their memory.

To craft their floating communities the people of the Triumphrat must use the only abundant source of material on their worlds, carcasses of slain Taniwha, or monster.

The Taniwha

Leviathan of the deep

Taniwha

In the crushing depths of the worlds Aecor, Soirus and Estoria lives great numbers of monstrous creatures of various shapes and sizes. Great fish and reptiles seemingly pulled from ancient Terran myth and history swim within the great oceans on all three of these worlds. While not fully comprehensive some of these creatures include; sharks, hydras, kraken, batoids, and various reptiles that seemed to appear in ancient Terran myth and history such as Helicoprion, Dunkleosteus, Tylosaurus, and Archelon to name a few.

Fortress-Monastery

Upon the surface of Aecor on the micro-continent of Kohatu the Adeptus Mechanicus built the home of the Cobalt Leviathans, the great Fortress Monastery Pakari. Taking inspiration from the oceans themselves the interior forgoes the standard Imperial use of straight lines and hard edges, instead the whole of the Pakari seemingly flows together. Smooth curves and gentle lines allow the whole upper portions of the fortress to look like an ocean wave frozen in time while below ground the chambers and rooms that comprise the rest of the Pakari are made in segmented spheres with some chambers even protruding into the ocean depths themselves. Within these submerged chambers is where battle brothers can seek solace and guidance from the members of the Vasa Ngaru. While the marines of the Cobalt Leviathans call the Pakari home they make good use of their secondary in system base. In the vacuum of space, at the true center of the triple orbit of Aecor, Soirus and Estoria is the Waea, forward base of the Cobalt Leviathans. It is from this uniquely modified Ramilies class starfort that the Cobalt Leviathans gather their fleet and range out seeking the foes of the Imperium bringing to them the Emperor’s justice.

Notable Areas of Pakari

As with all Fortress-Monasteries the Pakari has chambers and secrets unique to the Cobalt Leviathans:

- The Conqueror's Court: The entryway to the Pakari is lined with trophies of foes slain in the name of the Emperor. From Ork skulls to a dismantled Drukhari Talos engine the walls and vaulted ceilings are covered in the proof of the prowess of the Cobalt Leviathans in a proud display of their might.

- Brothers' Bivouac: This is a special location within the Pakari for here multiple tribes of Togi, at various stages of implantation, live, work and train together reminding even the most veteran of Taku of their roots. Its entrance lined with the trophies taken during the Trial of Rapunga seek to inspire the next generation of the Chapter. Each new tribe of aspirants is walked down this path before being presented with section of an open courtyard. It is here they are presented with multiple carcasses of Taniwha and ordered to build themselves a shelter. As time passes the self-made shelters eventually merge into a more communal area for their tribe, helping cement the bonds of brotherhood.

- The Orbs of Enlightenment: These clear chambers in the depths of the Pakari protrude into the depths of Aecor allowing any who enter a full view of the ocean around them. Mirroring the world just outside the chambers are filled with water taken and blessed from all three of the worlds that the Cobalt Leviathans call home. It is here that those who wish to meditate and reflect on their past, present, and future actions come, using the water's freezing temperature to bring clarity to muddy thoughts.

- Cavern of the Ancients: Built within a cavern that was discovered while building the Pakari rests the Cavern of the Ancients. This cavern was found to be in such a state of deep freeze that colossal icicles are perpetually seen clutching to the ceiling above. After thorough testing it was found that the natural temperature within the chamber was perfect for preserving the venerable ancients that are entombed within dreadnoughts. So it is here that alcoves were carved so that the Malola of the Cobalt Leviathans may rest as they await their next awakening.

- World's Heart: Sapping heat from the core of Aecor the chambers that make up the World's Heart ring with industry. It is here that the Sila, techmarines, and their Auna work endlessly creating the various arms and armor required to keep the Chapter functional.

- The Tidal Vault: Within the deepest layers of the Pakari rests the Tidal Vault. Within these curved walls the Vasa Ngaru train in their craft, be it that of the Chaplain or of the Librarian. Resting at the center of the room within a swirling vortex of ocean water rests the vault proper, within ancient relics, sacred to the Chapter, are stored. Access can only be obtained by those who can control the sea and part the waves blocking the interior. While almost all Vasa Ngaru have access to the Tidal Vault only the most senior members of the order may enter its innermost sanctum, the Prison of Frozen Waves.

- Prison of Frozen Waves: Located at the heart of the Tidal Vault, it is within this prison that the greatest threats the Cobalt Leviathans have found are locked in stasis. From xenos artifacts to warp beings, bound to the material plane, all are found frozen within sacred ice, locked away for as long as the Pakari stands.

Chapter Organisation

Much like their progenitor Chapter, the White Scars, the Cobalt Leviathans follow the Codex Astartes in structure but not combat doctrine. Seeing the Codex as a set for guidelines the Cobalt Leviathans have been known to change its tactics to comply to their own personal style of fighting. Other deviations from the Codex Astartes consist of placing their Tribe sigil (Company Markings) on the right pauldron, and the unique rank called a Vasa Ngaru, a combined rank of both the Chaplain and Librarian.

Vasa Ngaru

A unique formation to the Cobalt Leviathans the Vasa Ngaru serve the dual purpose of being both Chaplain and Librarian. Utilizing their talents to peer into the souls of men they can see what they are truly made of, laying bare any corruption that may be found within. It is for this reason that they are sent out to find new recruits for the Chapter weeding out the impure of heart and soul.

Due to this special role any Vasa Ngaru has the power to call upon a few unique abilities.

- Nature's Tempest: The Vasa Ngaru summons hurricane force winds of Estoria around his feet that bear him aloft allowing him to fly across the battlefield

- Ancestral Bond: Summoning the souls of the chapters fallen the Vasa Ngaru calls upon their wisdom to guide his brothers aim, be it with bolter or blade

- Ocean Worlds' Undertow: Calling upon the deep currents of Aecor the Vasa Ngaru drags down any caught in its path.

- Emperor's Gaze: Peering into the soul of a creature the Vasa Ngaru judges their worth. Should they be found wanting the Vasa Ngaru snuffs out their life force ending their existence

By encompassing the role of both Chaplain and Librarian the Vasa Ngaru take on two major roles within the Chapter, that of the Keeper of the Soul and Keeper of the Chant.

- The Keepers of the Soul: These members of the Vasa Ngaru focus only on maintaining the purity of the Chapter's soul by any means necessary. While all members of the Vasa Ngaru can, and will, take on some of this burden the majority falls to those that dedicate themselves to this order.

- The Keepers of the Chant: Being rich in tradition the Cobalt Leviathans do not keep written records of their deeds, believing that it cages the soul of the words. Instead the call of honor as well as lists of the fallen are passed on by ritual chant. It is these chants that Vasa Ngaru of this order memorize, no detail can be missed for to do so would insult those that came before them. It is the job of the Keepers of the Chant to tell the tale of their Tribes when they return home after campaign.

Along with these specialist roles Vasa Ngaru much like the Librarians of other chapters use methods to attempt to divine the future. While others use the Emperor’s tarot the Vasa Ngaru of the Cobalt Leviathans utilize sealed orbs containing blessed water from the Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria. These spheres are called Lumanaʻi and are used to read the waves within the etherium.

While a unanimous vote is not required to choose the next Rangatira it is very rare that this is not the case.

Order of Battle

Being a Codex Astartes-compliant Space Marine Chapter the Cobalt Leviathans are divided into 10 Companies, called Tribes, of 100 Space Marines each. These Tribes all have their own unique attitude towards warfare, from the brutality of the Tribe of the Helicoprion to multi-pronged attacks carried out by the Tribe of the Lernaean the Cobalt Leviathans enact war in savage but efficient fashion.

Chapter Recruitment

Upon their arrival the young aspirants brought to the Pakari are organized immediately into a four new tribes, often with rivals being assigned together in the same tribe as an attempt to erase grudges of the past and form closer bonds for the future. It is in these tribes that they will build a home at the Brothers' Bivouac establishing the groundwork of comradely among the aspirants. Being presented with multiple carcasses of leviathans from the deep, with instructions to build themselves a shelter. It quickly becomes a special location within the Pakari for here multiple tribes of Togi, at various stages of implantation, live, work and train together. To the casual observer it is easy to spot the newest Togi's shelters for they tend to be basic shelters with more thought to the individual instead of the Tribe as a whole. As time goes on however these structures take on a more permanent look and are clearly meant for multiple people to live and train together.

As they train and learn together over time the tribe will receive their first of the gene-seed implants, finally becoming true Neophytes of the Chapter. Continuing through their training all but the final two gene-seeds are implanted into the young Togi, the Progenoid Glands and the Black Carapace. The former will only be implanted should the Neophyte succeed in the Trial of Rapunga and the latter after serving as a Scout Marine within the Tribe of the Archelon and being chosen for elevation to full battle brother.

Chapter Combat Doctrine

"May we move as swift as Aecor's winds, as brutal as Estoria's tide, and crush the foe like the depths of Soirus. For we are Cobalt Leviathans, Adeptus Astartes! None can stand before our might. So laugh into the wind and chant with me for the Khan has blessed us this day!"
— Kapeteni Tariu, Master of the Pursuit, Tribe of the Helicoprion

Holding to their warrior culture the marines of the Cobalt Leviathans favor fast attacks and brutal melee combat. Such is their love for the brutal brawl of combat that most brothers refuse to embark on a mission without some sort of close combat weapon on their person, be it Combat Knives, Chainaxes, or Thunder Hammers. This desire to engage their foe face to face leads many to assume at first glance that the only tactic that the Cobalt Leviathans employ is speeding into melee, for many this is the last mistake they ever make. While appearing to charge into combat with reckless abandon should one see the movements for what they truly are they would notice an intricate pattern of hit and run.

Constantly weaving in and out of formation the Cobalt Leviathans harry their foe into the position that they desire by engaging in a constant game of cat and mouse. Mounted marines moving in to harass the foe only to turn away after a few moments trying to draw theme out into a position of the Chapter's choosing. For as their mounted brothers turn away those charging forward on foot or in the back of transports surge forward to meet the foe. Inevitably this draws out more and more of their enemy who seek to overwhelm this force of dismounted marines. Thus engaged few hear the cry of "Kara" with fewer still ever realizing what is about to happen, as suddenly the riders who had harried the foe before return. Having circled around in a spiraling pattern the riders of the Cobalt Leviathans find themselves breaking through exposed flanks and the back of the enemy who sought to eliminate their slower brethren.

Trial of Rapunga

One of the most sacred trials among the Chapter is the Trial of Rapunga, the final test before Togi become Scout Marines and are elevated into the 10th Company, or Tribe of the Archelon. This trial only takes place when a Tribe returns home after a campaign allowing those that are lacking the final two gene-seed implants to prove themselves. Their task, to track and hunt a Taniwha in its home territory, the depths of the ocean. To this end every Togi is provided a weighted vest, a simple breathing apparatus and a bone spear and sent walking into the sea under instructions to return in victory or not at all. While unique in execution this is not a new task for the Togi, for their old tribes hunt the Taniwha that inhabit the home worlds, using them for both food and construction materials. When a tribe hunts, however, they do so with have no fewer than sixty members, sturdy boats and bait to draw their quarry into reefs or sandbars.

Setting out in their tribes of twenty they march onward along the ocean floor beginning the hunt for the creatures that dwell below. While four tribes will descend into the deep on average only two tribes will ever return home, the rest having been slain in the attempt. Upon a successful hunt the Togi that return to the Pakari are then given the Progenoid Glands implant and are elevated to the Tribe of the Archelon as true Scout Marines. It is then that they assume the role of the Chapter’s scouts across the battlefields of the Imperium. Only after further distinguishing themselves will a Scout Marine receive the Black Carapace and become a full Battle Brother.

Chapter Belief

"Tonight our Brothers of the Lernaean Tribe come home. We shall feast and celebrate their victories and mourn the Taku that they have fallen. Pay attention for they shall share with us their story in the way of our people. For one day you shall ascend to their ranks and then it shall fall to you to do the same."
— Kapeteni Tosia, Tribe of the Archelon, addressing newly recruited Togi

The Cobalt Leviathans share in the beliefs of their Primarch, venerating the Emperor as the Ultimate Uniter of Mankind, but not as a god and so they do not hold the Imperial Creed as their faith. While never openly showing contempt for those that do worship the Emperor as a god they hold a great distrust for the Ecclesiarchy. Believing that the Ecclesiarchy holds greater power then is within their right.

Like their founding Chapter, the White Scars, the Cobalt Leviathans maintain a deep connection with the natural elements. Believing it is through these powers their strength and power stem from they maintain certain rituals and rites to keep the favor of these spirits.

Being a proud and naturalistic chapter the thought of never feeling the wind on ones face or smelling the salt off the oceans is revolting. It is for this reason that the interment within a Dreadnaught sarcophagus is never forced upon a Taku. Instead only those who can still volunteer are placed within these sacred machines, those too far gone are granted the Emperor's Mercy instead. Called Malola, or living death, the Taku who request to be interred are seen as both vaunted heroes and condemned souls. For it is believed that those who walk the path of the Malola will never feel the ocean spray or smell its breeze, even after passing over to the next life.

Like the people of their ocean homeworlds the Cobalt Leviathans believe that to write something down is to capture its soul. The act alone is seen as selfish for while the soul of the thing will then serve you it prevents others from gaining the power of the story. As such within the records of the Cobalt Leviathans no written word is preserved, instead vox recordings and ritual chant communicate the history and story of the Chapter.

Chapter Gene-Seed

Like all other White Scars successor Chapters the gene-seed of the Cobalt Leviathans is relatively stable and they too follow the teachings of Jaghatai believing it to be their duty to uphold his legacy. Thus they embrace the ferocity of their gene-heritage and combine it with the tenacity bred into them from their oceanic home. Like many other Chapters the Gene-Seed of the Cobalt Leviathans causes physical changes within the marine. As such all members of the Chapter have emerald green eyes and tanned skin.

Primarch's Curse: Silence of the Depths

Much like their progenitor chapter, the White Scars, a innate savagery seems to rest within the veins of Jaghatai's sons. None are sure if the gene-seed of the Khan emboldens this savagery or merely complements the fury that is found already with the people that live on Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria. Unlike their kin, however, this rage forms in silence at first, then bursts forth like a tidal wave.

  • Stage 1 - The Ebb: Be it in response to almost all of a squad being wiped out or a grudge to settle against a specific foe the marine starts to withdraw inwards, only finding joy in rigorous martial training. While not odd the main outward sign of this stage is when a battle brother no longer yells war chants as he charges into battle, instead allowing his rage to slowly build within. Brothers close to the marine or a Vasa Ngaru can still talk him out of this stupor should they notice in time, bringing him back from the edge.
  • Stage 2 - The Flow: While in the Ebb, any fight can trigger the Flow causing the marine to seek out any foe to use the fury gained in the Ebb. As the marine now charges into any fight regardless of the odds. The quiet nature of the previous stage is lost, and a constant bellow roars forth from the marines throat. When there are no more foes to face the marine in question either snaps out of this state and seeks atonement or turns on his allies.
  • Stage 3 - The Torrent: All reason abandons the marine and he can't tell the difference between friend and foe. To them anything that moves is to be slain where it stands. Unfortunately the only cure for this stage is a swift execution. Thankfully for the Cobalt Leviathans it is rare for a marine to sink this deep into their rage due to their following of the Noble Pursuits established by the Great Khan and the close bonds of brotherhood.

Deathwatch Service

Never ones to shirk duty the Cobalt Leviathans actively second brothers to the Deathwatch where they have served with honor since the Chapter's founding. While hesitant to change Chapter's traditions there is no denying the tactics and training garnered from service within the Deathwatch. Should a brother be selected he is returned to the Pakari to undergo the Ritual of Loyalty before departing for his tenure.

Ritual of Loyalty

Before departing for service within the Deathwatch the chosen brother descends into the Pakari towards the Chambers of Enlightenment. It is there that the Lord of the Triumphrat hands their brother a Valiu, a necklace with a clear vial dangling off it, and instructs them descend into the waters below and extract some of the blessed water. Once this task is completed the marine is instructed to don the necklace and never remove it for this is his remembrance of home and how his brothers will eagerly await his return.

Notable Members

As with all Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes there are leaders and heroes that guide the chapter in their ways of war in the Emperor's name:

  • Rangatira Aleki - First Rangatira of the Cobalt Leviathans Rangatira Aleki lead the Chapter during its first 200 years, directing the Chapter's crusade. While earning many honors for himself and his Chapter Rangatira Aleki would be forced to adapt to a degree so rarely seen by any of the Adeptus Astartes. Upon the re-discovery of the Gurges Sector Aleki oversaw his chapters growth from being fleet-based to settling on a triumphrat of worlds, Aecor, Soirus and Estoria. Overseeing this drastic change within his Chapter was hard for Rangatira Aleki but he maintained order during this transition for he saw that it was in the Chapter’s best interest to establish a single place to call home. It was by Rangatira Aleki’s own hand that the rules of the Ritual of Exchange and the Trial of Rapunga were established, traditions that are still followed into the current millennia. While his time as Rangatira was long Rangatira Aleki would unfortunately meet his end Vithion V attempting to defend the planet against the forces of WAAAGH! Nitgrokh being slain by warlord’s own hand.
  • Rangatira Elisara - Second Rangatira of the Cobalt Leviathans Rangatira Elisara assumed the role after the death of his mentor Aleki took an oath of vengeance against Nitgrokh. Upon the Vithion V, where the warlord after his victory over the Cobalt Leviathans, had made his base did Rangatira Elisara complete his oath of vengeance. Leading the whole of the first company alongside members of the Imperial Guard Rangatira Elisara claimed the head of Nitgrokh for the Chapter. Rangatira Elisara would go on to lead his brothers in battle for the next 400 standard Teran years eventually meeting his own end at the talons of Hive Fleet Behir upon the world of Crov S3 within the Segmentum Pacificus, his sacrifice having blunted the assault of the Hive Fleet enough to end the threat that they posed to the planet and the Sector at large.
  • Rangatira Isakko - Current Rangatira of the Cobalt Leviathans Rangatira Isakko has served his chapter across countless engagements across countless worlds. Well respected for his 635 years of service Rangatira Isakko has spent the last three centuries leading his Chapter’s might against the foes of the Imperium. With an honor roll that is second only to Rangatira Aleki himself Rangatira Isakko has seen the breath and width horrors that the Galaxy has to offer yet still maintains his faith in the Imperium and his Brothers. Nothing would test this faith more then the conflict that would come to be called the War for Sea and Sky. As the 13th Black Crusade lay siege to Caidia the members of the Vasa Ngaru all read dark portents within their Lumana'i showing the death of their home worlds. At the urging of Mauga, Lord of the Vasa Ngaru, Isakko sent the order for all Brothers of the Chapter to return home, under the Van'Val'Aiga Protocol. Such an order had only been given one previous time in the whole of the Chapter's history for it mandated that no matter the task at hand the Cobalt Leviathans were to leave and head to the home worlds at once. The last tribe to arrive in system was the Tribe of the Helicoprion having abandoned their fight alongside many others at Cadia attempting to stop Abaddon and his Black Crusade, a shame that the Chapter carries to this day believing that had their Brothers not answered the call Cadia might have been saved and the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum stopped. As fate would have it no sooner had the Tribe of the Helicoprion entered high orbital anchor over Estroia did the Cicatrix Maledictum open, splitting the sky and staining it a deep crimson. With the opening of the Great Rift across the galaxy many forces found themselves thrown to its four corners and far from their designated targets. Taking advantage of the thinned veil of reality Oghoth Bladegazer, Chaos Lord of Khorne, ordered his forces to enter real space and exited within the Gurges system. Not knowing what they would find Oghoth Bladegazer was delighted to find that his army would have a proper fight for the glory of Khorne. At the culmination of the fighting over the three worlds Rangatira Isakko claimed the head of Oghoth for himself. Though the Cobalt Leviathans would prove victorious the fighting would leave the Chapter severely depleted. Years would pass without word from the Imperium at large leading the Chapter and its allies to start to wonder if the Imperium had indeed fallen. It wasn't until the Primarch Roboute Guilliman at the head of the Indomitus Crusade made his way into the Gurges Sector that this belief was extinguished. For a primarch walked once more with mankind the son of the Emperor lending light to this time of darkness. He did not come alone either for he brought with him reinforcements in the form of Primaris Space Marines of their very own Chapter as well as the mystical rites to transform those who came before into Primaris as well. Rangatira Isakko gladly accepted these new reinforcements for while they looked different then himself they had the blood of the Khan in their veins and a manner in keeping of that of the Cobalt Leviathans. After having embraced the gift of Primaris Rangatira Isakko ordered his chapter to undergo the upgrades to become Primaris themselves, implementing this change across the Chapter in stages based on Tribe. Leading by example Rangatira Isakko was the first Cobalt Leviathan to pass through the Rubicon emerging invigorated he set about a new noble purpose, to reclaim those worlds lost to the opening of the Great Rift. Becoming seen as a bulwark against the darkness that has enveloped the galaxy Rangatira Isakko has become a voice for change, rallying his Chapter after the War of Sea and Sky to sail forth and bring the wrath of Jaghatai Khan’s sons to those that would harm the Imperium.
  • Ariki Vasa Ngaru Arona - Leader of the Vasa Ngaru before Mauga, Arona served the Chapter in this role for over two standard centuries.
  • Ariki Vasa Ngaru Mauga - Also known as Master of the Tide, Mauga is a legend amongst the Cobalt Leviathans. While an aspirant undergoing the Trial of Rapunga, Maguna was decreed deceased when none of his tribe returned. A full standard year passed before out of the sea walked Mauga dragging behind him the corpse of a emerald green batoid four times his normal mortal size. Collapsing upon the shore he was found by a squad Togi training on the beaches of the Pakari where he was immediately taken to the Apothcarium. Mauga eventually awoke from his comatose state to tell the tale of his unlikely survival. His tribe had scarcely begun their trial when they were set upon by a massive emerald batoid, swooping in from the depths it consumed two of their number before any could react. Despite their best efforts to form a defense over the next two hours all save for Mauga were consumed by the beast. By luck, chance, or the Emperor's protection Mauga was left alone the remains of his fellow Togi slowly sinking all around him. Vowing revenge on the beast he stalked the ocean floor seeking out his foe whom he had named Losik. Traveling alone in the dark depths of Aecor’s oceans Mauga lost track of all sense of time, his need to find Losik driving him ever forward. Eventually he found the batoid and engaged him in battle. Easily outmatched on his own versus the creature Mauga found himself on the brink of death until something within him seemed to snap. Feeling like a hurricane roared in his veins the ocean answered his call and bent to his every whim, causing Losik to be bashed against the sea floor until the massive batoids’ wings were limp. Seizing his prize Muga then spent another standard month wandering the ocean trying to return to the Chapter. Realizing the truth of this tale the Vasa Ngaru took the Togi into their ranks, so to better hone his immense psychic potential. As the decades passed Mauga's prower over the Other Sea grew, reaching a point that eclipsed any Vasa Ngaru that had came before. So it when Arona, the previous Ariki Vasa Ngaru, passed Maguna was the clear choice to assume the mantle of leadership.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colors

The Cobalt Leviathans wear primarily matte white power armor. The helm, chest, gauntlets, knee and shoulder guards are colored aquamarine. Their Tribe is denoted upon the right pauldron black on the aquamarine part of the shoulder guard.

While a fleet-based chapter before the rediscovery of the Gurges System the Cobalt Leviathans armor was primarily matte white with cobalt running on a diagonal across the armor. This coloration was changed however to the current aquamarine in respect to the blue-green oceans of Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria.

Chapter Badge

Using a symbol from their homeworlds the fish hook of the Cobalt Leviathans not only is used to call back to the tools of their people it brings with it a deeper meaning. To the peoples of Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria the hook represents strength, perseverance, and respect for the ocean. Wearing such a symbol proudly proclaims the virtues that the Cobalt Leviathans hold most dear.

Chapter Fleet

  • Leviathan's Grace (Battle Barge): Flagship of the Cobalt Leviathans Chapter the Leviathan's Grace was intended to become the Chapter's fortress-monastery, it serving this function for nearly three centuries. Upon the Chapter's settling of Aecor, Soirus, and Estoria the Leviathan's Grace became the main Battle Barge for the Tribe of the Triumphrat.
  • Waea (Ramilies-class Starfort): A modified Ramilies class starfort, the Waea serves as the forward base and dry-dock where the Chapter sallies forth to bring their might to bear. Residing in the center of the triple orbit of the system this starfort guards the only paths through the gravity wells that rampage across the orbit.
  • Vivid Aqueous (Battle Barge): Battle Barge of the Tribe of the Heliobat it formerly served as the command ship for the Tribe of the Lernaean before the Unbreakable Resolve came into service of the Chapter.
  • Unbreakable Resolve (Emperor-class Battleship): The original name of this Emperor-Class Battleship has long been lost to history, for at some unknown date it was captured and forced to serve the Khornate Chaos Lord Oghoth Bladegazer and his horde. Despite years of forced servitude the machine spirit refused to bend, to break and be corrupted by the forces of Chaos that surrounded it at all times. It wasn't until the War of Sea and Sky that the chance to enact its vengeance by easing the path for the Chapter to retake the ship from the forces of Chaos. After extensive cleansing and purging of its systems she was renamed the Unbreakable Resolve to honor the tremendous spirit shown in its captivity.
  • Exultant Skies (Battle Barge): Battle barge of the Tribe of the Mosasaurus
  • Crushing Depths (Strike Cruiser): Strike cruiser for the Chapter destroyed in the War of Sea and Sky. She was eventually repaired and returned to service with her first mission post repair guiding the Indomitus Crusade through the Gurges Sector.
  • Aleki's Gift (Unknown-class Vessel): Recovered from the depths of a space hulk Aleki's Gift is an ancient vessel created at an unknown date in humanities past. Similar in size and shape to a Strike Cruiser she lacks the firepower of a similar class of ship. Instead it is clear that whomever designed Aleki's Gift created her not to be a vessel of war but of information, as she gives off no detectable signature. No matter the auspex setting or ping only line of sight reveals her presence. Due to this unique gift the Tribe of the Archelon claims her as their primary transport.

Chapter Relics

  • The Blade of Sea and Sky: This Relic Blade was originally recovered by the White Scars Chapter and was given by Great Khan Nasan as a gift to Rangatira Aleki for their aid on Cypra Mundi. This blade is an exact mirror of the Cobalt Leviathans own sigil and only the Rangatira has the right to use it in battle. Crafted at an unknown date this blade is able to slice through Ceramite plate with ease.
  • Armor of the Ancestors: This artificer armor is worn only by the Rangatira and is adorned with spiral like sigils each carved by the hands of its previous wearers. Upon being elevated to the rank of Rangatira it falls upon the marine to choose a symbol to represent his personal charge of the Chapter.
  • Standard of the Ocean Lord: This standard has carried into battle alongside the Rangatira and his Ranga Leo since the founding of the Chapter. Emblazoned with the Chapter Masters personal sigil it depicts the honors won over the centuries by the various Rangatira. Should it ever be damaged in battle it is the Rangatira himself that weaves it whole once more, seeking to restore the pride of this ancient relic.
  • Valiu: These necklaces are only given to brothers who are chosen to be seconded to the Deathwatch. This Plastel vial placed on a handmade twine rope holds blessed waters from all three of the Chapter's homeworlds. It is to represent that though the marine may be leaving his Chapter for a time part of the Cobalt Leviathans home will always be going with him.
  • Mantle of Losik: This cloak was carved from the wings of Losik after Vasa Ngaru Mauga dragged its corpse back to the Pakari. Ripples of eldritch energy still shimmer across the cloak, leftover from the Mauga's psychic rage that had slain the beast. By tapping into this preserved rage the user can enhance their own power for a time.
  • Lumana'i: These clear plasteel spheres contain water from each of the Chapter's homeworlds. Having been blessed by the Chief Vasa Ngaru meditation upon the orb helps gain members of the Vasa Ngaru focus as well as becoming a medium to possibly gain glimpses into the future.

"By the Emperor's guidance and Mechanicus ingenuity were these new brothers created. While not born on Aecor, Soirus, or Estoria the blood of the Khan beats in their veins and the rage of the ocean swells in their hearts. We have accepted them into our ranks but now it is time we accept our fate as well. I will cross the Rubicon and all of you shall join me."
— Rangatira Isakko, Lord of the Triumphrat, addressing the Pulea Fa'eva
"Come monster! Come you misbegotten creature! My blades sing for your blood, they crave the taste of your flesh. Come closer so that I can show you what a true warrior is made of."
— Tuhinga Turi, seconded to Deathwatch addressing an unknown xenos

About Cobalt Leviathans

"Nothing bolsters a man's resolve then seeing them (Cobalt Leviathans) go to battle with chant and song. And nothing fills a man with more dread when they do so silently."
— Lord General Kinaa Enlil, of the Xankov 502nd
"They are younger and not of Chogoris, but by the Khan they can still ride."
— Unknown White Scars Sergeant
"Statement: The lack of written records is insufficient to maintain integrity of your history... Inquiry: Why do you say that written word traps the spirit?"
— Tech-adept Dravland addressing an unknown Vasa Ngaru
"Before they took me I knew only hardship and kin. After, I still knew both however I was given a purpose, a reason to exist. I would give my life for this Chapter as they have shown me what duty to something greater then yourself is"
— Okitu Mete, Shipmistress of the Exultant Skies
"They are loyal, misguided in their beliefs perhaps but that can be fixed. I am confident that through the Emperor's power within the relics given will correct their ways"
— Chaplain Dieter of the Black Templars, discussing the Cobalt Leviathans
