Carthag is an Imperial Penal World located in the Orelian Sub-sector of the Uridian Deeps, in the deep south of the Segmentum Pacificus. Arid and barely able to sustain life, Carthag operates as a ship-breaking world for the tech-adepts of the forge-moon of Carthagus Minoris; the final resting place of rediscovered wrecks and decommissioned warships.

In antiquity, Carthag was once the thriving heart of the Imperiums operations not only within the Orelian Salient, but throughout the whole Uridian Deeps, acting as the command and control centre for the Imperium's compliance campaigns throughout the region. Transformed into a verdant garden world, home to the retired men and women of the Excertus Imperialis, Carthag gradually became a beacon of Imperial civilization out on the fringes. Yet such symbols are always the first to be toppled in the throws of war.

One of the first targets in the traitor Uridian Campaign during the Horus Heresy, the successive engagements, battles and campaigns to take control of the strategically valuable world saw it rendered a wasteland, littered with warships and the refuse of war like no other planet in the region. Following the Horus Heresy, the Adeptus Mechanicus established themselves on the ruined world, and from its moon of Carthagus Minoris, transforming it into an enclave of the Machine God, in order to salvage and recover anything and everything of value from the planets surface.
