"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to this xenos-infested sector. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
—Chapter Master Lord Scipio. Before the exterminatus of the planet Ashent to stop the tide of the Hive Fleet Ouroborus

The Brotherhood of the Sword is a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter descended from the Primarch Rogal Dorn and successors to the honorable and proud Imperial Fists. This stoic and honor-bound Chapter have taken the duty to oversee the border between the Pelegron Cluster and the eternal darkness beyond. As a fleet-based Chapter, they constantly patrol and erasure hostile xenos forces, cleansing of all planets tainted by them. The brotherhood is known for their proud chivalrous culture, assertive mindset and fleet prowess. But the isolation at the edge of the galaxy and the rise of chaos, are taking a toll on them and have forced them into a more dire and defensive situation.

Chapter History

The origins of the Brotherhood of the Sword dates back to the 23rd Founding, also known as the "Sentinel Founding", a tumultuous period in Imperial history where no fewer than 57 Space Marine Chapters had been destroyed, turned Renegade or declared lost in the Warp during this troubled period. The era had been marked by such calamities as the Age of Apostasy, the disastrous 21st "Cursed" Founding, the attacks of the Forces of Chaos and a rampage of Orks almost unchecked along the Imperium of Man's frontiers.

The 23rd Founding believes to have been a series of linked Foundings designed to repair the power and reach of the Adeptus Astartes that had suffered considerable losses in the preceding millennia.

Along other chapters at the 23rd Founding, The Brotherhood of the Sword were outset conceived to spend their existence on a continuous crusade and therefore created from the most stable gene-seed stocks available to the Adeptus Mechanicus.

Pelegron Cluster

Pelegron Cluster

The Brotherhood of the Sword's ongoing crusade is to take, and gain control the xenos-contested regions in the Pelegron Cluster, which lies on the borders of the Segmentum Ultima and the Segmuntum Obscurus. A sector where the Imperium had suffered considerable losses due to constant Orks invasions and endless Eldar Corsairs raids.

Thousands of years later, the crusade has not become any easier with the present of Tyranids, Necrons, the mysterious Hrud and massive chaos infestation after the opening the Cicatrix Maledictum

Over the years The Brotherhood of the Sword have establish a very close alliance with their Deathwatch brethren at Watch Fortress Excalibris.

WatchFortressMaps

Stellar cartographic map of Deathwatch Fortresses.

This watch fortress is located in the border of Segmentum Obscurus, overlooking the Pelegron Cluster. In many battles the Deathwatch have helped the Brotherhood out of dire situations. Especially against the Drukhari, where the Brotherhoods blunt force where easily outmaneuvered and returned with ruthless counterattacks and ambushes.

In the late 41st Millennium, the Brotherhood returned the favor as Watch Captain Barradasn Kill-teams were stretched to the breaking point as they dealt with multiple ongoing xenos threats. This included the Drukhari redoubling their attacks, the push of the Necrons Atun dynasty of Icnarus towards the Gothic Sector, and the Hrud infestations discovered throughout the Kuypax Reach.

But with the massive uprising of chaos, the brotherhood has taken a more defensive position and strategy too keep the enemy at bay.

For the first time since the first voyage into the Pelegron Cluster, the whole fleet has been assembled in the Tozern sector. From this sector, the brotherhood launches strategic attacks thorough the Pelegron Cluster system, mainly with naval bombardment and larger numbers of ground troops to overwhelm their foe. To secure their gene-seeds, the chapter have established a fortress at the planet Kronite in the Tozern sector as a back-up for their gene-seeds bank at their flagsship.

Notable Campaigns

The first battle of the Pelegron Crusade (139.M38 - 160.M38)

The newly found chapters first journey into the Pelegron Cluster was meet with continuous hit and run attacks from the Eldar Corsairs. But after couple of months of void warfare, the eldar withdrew as Brotherhood continued to the Tozern sector near of the feudal world of Kronite. Only to find the sector on the verge of utterly destruction due to a massive war between two large ork tribes. Chapter Master Almace was determined to stop the onslaught before it spread to Kronite and other planets or sectors.

The mayor battle between the two tribes was on the planet of Hefeun, which now have become a wasteland and all the human population killed during the battles. The orks seemed to have arrived via a “small” spacehulk that now lay in orbit and was surrounded by hundreds of weird ork space crafts. The space hulk was the size of a Gloriana- class battleship and the orks had only managed to make landfall on Hefeun and 2 other nearby planets.

Almace gather the whole fleet and attacked the spacehulk and ork “space-crafts”, blocking the orks chances to get away from the 3 planets. To keep the orks at bay at Hefeun, the Brotherhood only orbital bombarded one tribe at the time, making them battle each other even. The 2 other planets Krims and Xristhen, still had the PDF who, with the help of the Brotherhood, still stood their ground against ork masses.

It took Almace 21 years to clean out every trace of orks at the Krims and Xristhen, burning away the all area where the orks had been.

But Hefeun is still to this day infested by Orks fungus, but due to the all the bombardments, internal fighting, and yearly purging of orks by the brotherhood, the orks never gain the numbers to become a real threat. Actually, the brotherhoods neophytes use ork hunts as part of their training.

Haaxios VIII Expedition (921.M41)

Captain Demir 1st company

Captain Demir 1st Company.

The brotherhood of The Sword received distress calls from the 18th Martian Macroblade, First Cohort’s Magos Dominus Gavion at the planet Haaxios VIII in Pelegron Cluster. Gavion was on a mission to excavate the ruins of an Eldar world but his expedition soon came under attack from Eldar Corsairs. Chapter Master Scipio sent the battle barge Mythcarver accompanied with strike cruisers and frigates to aid Magos Dominus Gavion. When arriving at Haaxios VIII, they faced the a large part of the mighty Eldar Corsairs fleet; The Nightwings.

The Brotherhood led terrible early losses as the Eldar Corsairs destroyed a strike cruiser and 3 frigates. Captain Demir, from 1st company, quickly planned a full-out counterattack, focusing on the Eldar Corsairs Flagship. When the space marine fleet establish Elastic Defense to hold of the Eldars offensive, Captain Demir and his terminators made a hazardous boarding action on the Eldar Corsairs Flagship. Demir fought all the way to the command deck, facing the notorious Corsair Prince Elijah Thorn. Elijah´s life ended as he has cleaved in two by Demir’s relic blade; Heaven's Will.

Wrath of the Atun Dynasty (949-962.M41)

Atun D Map

Atun Map

In 784.M41, the Atun Dynasty silently awoke on Icnarus with a mission to reclaim the planet. Settlements began to vanish one after another, quickly the world's citizens had to retreat to their only spaceport located in the coastal city of Inmoran. Atun warriors rose from the nearby sea led by the great Phaeron Atun. A formidable last stand by the PDF and an Imperial knight, pushed back the Necrons. However, the peace was short-lived as more Necron forces stirring back to life and annihilated every living human at Inmoran

With the planet in his grasp, Phaeron Atun began his advance towards the Gothic Sector. Only the brave Imperial Guardsmen of Agathean Domain, the Deathwatch Kill-Teams from Fort Excalibris and the battle-hardened Space Marines from the Brotherhood of the Sword stood in his way.

In 949.M41 the a part of necron force reached the borders of Pelegron systems and the void war between the Brotherhood of the Sword and and started.

The first ground battle occurred as large spearhead force from the Atun Dynasty laid siege of the civilized world Turhal. Distress calls came from the Governor, that the necron force had already penetrated their orbital defenses and had made landfall near their capital Solhunion.

Chapter Master Scipios Fleet were engaged in multiple battles across the sector. His only option was to use the Strike Cruiser Shamshir and its escorts ships, eventhough it was heavily damaged due to a former Necron surprise attack. Stationed on Shamshir, where the battle-hardened 3rd company, led by the stoic and honorable Captain Kacper.

Captain Kacper 3rd company

Captain Kacper

Captain Kacper knew that the Necrons had Sekhem Class Light Cruisers, a Scythe Class Harvest Ship and lots od escort ships in orbit, so it would be suicide to make a traditional landfall to near of the necron forces. The necron fleet would simple blown them up before they could send drop pods and thunderhawks down to the planet.

So, he took a drastic decision to crash-land the strike cruiser near of Solhunion so he could save the city before the necrons would start their onslaught.

The strike cruiser crashed onto the surface and miraculously there were only a few crew casualties. Captain Kasper quickly established a defensive trench-line against the massive Necron army. Wave after wave of horrendous metal bodies crashed against the space-marines fortifications. But Kaspers men wouldnt be moved and after 12 days of fighting, Captain Kasper saw the Necron cruiser ships suddenly being blown up in orbit.

Not long after the explosions, Kacper could observe drop pods landing behind enemy line, follow by the flickering light of terminators teleporting in.

The 1st company had arrived… The battle was soon over.

The brotherhood won the first battle, but the war lasted to 962.M41 as the Necron forced retreated from the pelegron system. But surly Phaeron Atun will be back with even a larger force.

The proud Strike Cruiser Shamshir couldn't be salvaged and was rebuild to a fort and mausoleum for fallen brethren of the 3rd company.

The Hrud infestation of Tathlum (976.M41)

Tathlum is a minor penitentiary mining world located near of the Isstvan system. As communication suddenly stopped with Tathlum, an Imperial expedition force was sent from Coronis Agathon. Only to be never heard from again. Captain Ecke and his scouts of the 10th company was ordered to investigate the matters.

Hrud

The Hrud

10th Company 2nd squad

10th Company 2nd Scout squad

At the Capital of Tathlum, the scouts were met with a horrible sight. All the prisoners, guards and PDF have been killed and mutilated. Strangely most of the prisoners seems to have died of old age within their cells and some parts of the buildings seems to start to deteriorate. But no sights of the foul creatures that have done this. At night the Hrud came up via the tunnels and sewers of the city and overran the 2 basecamp, killing all 3 squads of scouts. From his Vanguard Cruiser Froberge, Captain could do nothing but hear his neophytes die. As the Hrud had infested the nearby mines and the undercity, Ecke´s orbital bombardment would have very little effect. So, he had to plan a planetfall to eradicate the Hrud.

The 5th battle Companies of the Brotherhood were engaged in other battles across the sector, so Captain Ecke had to call in the reserves of the 8th company. A few weeks later 10 units of assault marines arrived to follow Captain Ecke plan of purging the world from the infestation.

This battle is to date the hardest urban and tunnel warfare, that the Brotherhood have ever faced. The Hrud fought for every underpass and corner, refusing to give in. Ecke had never meet this kind of mysterious enemy, that fought with irrational strategy and devotion and they providing huge losses to the 8th and 10th companies.

Luckily after 2 months of fighting they were supported by the 5th company. The battles continued for another month until a day where the Hrud suddenly disappeared.

Even though, space marines do not show signs of aging. But the surviving scouts and assault marines looked like battle-hardened veterans and were clearly affected by the mysterious powers of the Hrud.

Endless Tides of the Hive Fleet Ouroboros (The last stand at Kronite 999.M41)

Tyranids incursions

Hive Fleet Ouroboros

From the dark space of the ghoul stars, the horrendous tyranid swarm known as Ouroboros appeared. Leaving destruction and barren planets in their path. Luckily an Adeptus Mechanicus excavation force manage to return with the warnings of the coming horde of devastation.

The tyranids arrived at the northern fringes of Naogeddon System and Pelegron custer in the year 999.M41. But the Imperial forces were prepared. Chapter Master Scipio have been asked to join with everything that he could muster, calling together the whole fleet and most of the companies, only leaving the 4th and the reserves of the 6th company to protect their fortress at Kronite.

Together with the Imperial fleet of the …  and Adeptus Mechanicus fleet of …, they manage to intercept the Ouroboros main tendril fleet at the planet Naogeddon. Due to Naogeddon is a deadworld, the tyranid didn’t make landfall and therefore tried to breakthrough the imperial fleet blockade to get to planets to get new biomass.

The joined imperial and Adeptus Mechanicus fleet held their stand, and the fleet of the brotherhood was assigned to intercept break-out fleets. Only a small part the tyranid fleet managed to break through but was eventually terminated by another imperial fleet as they reached the Gothic Sector.

During the void-battle all astro-telepathic communication with the 4th and 6th companies were shut down due to the Tyranids shadow in the warp. But Chapter Master Scipio had feeling that something was wrong at their gene-seed fortress at Kronite. The moment, the victory was secured, Scipio ordered his battled fleet to make haste to Kronite. Only to find it under siege of a Ouroboros splinterfleet.

The tyranids bio-ships were quickly destroyed by the space marine fleet and every space marine were rapidly transported down to the fortress.

They arrived in the very last second, the tyranids were breaching the last line of defense only held back by a few marines of the 6th company, the tech-marines, their servitors, and last squads of human warrior selfs. Seeing their fallen brethren of the 4th and 6th, the brotherhood was filled with utterly rage and destroyed the last remains of the tyranids.

At the main defense fortification, Lord Scipio found the last stand of 4th company and their dying captain Fincath. Scipio informed him that he had save the gene-seeds and future of his chapter. And it would be an honour to continue fighting side-by-side him if he chooses to, as it would be in the sarcophagus of a dreadnought. Fincath didn’t hesitate as his duty wasn’t done yet.

To honor the 4th company, the company color green is only used in honour badges given to brothers that fallen in battle defending their chapter.

The Era Indomitus and the rise of Chaos (ca. 999.M41 - Present)

The addition of primaris marines, The isolation and ongoing war against the forces of chaos.

Chapter Organization

The Brotherhood of the Sword chapter was mostly build around the sacred words of the Codex Astartes. The main deviation are they have build each battle-company to work independently and have therefore assigned chaplains, Librarians and armoury pool to each company.

In each Battle-companies there are 2 chaplains , 2 Librarians and 2 lieutenants; as there are one of each command rank assigned to the Battlelinegroupand one to the Close Support -group. The reason for this, is that every battle-company should be able to establish a Hammer & Anvil deployment with command group in each force.

The 4 battle-companies are stationed in their own strike cruiser with their own armoury pool, that are organized by a senior Techmarine and his tech-operators.

Therefore the Brotherhood have an extraordinary amount of Techmarines and tech-operates to maintain and handled the vehicles of all of armoury pools. Many chapters use Space Marines of the reserve companies as drivers, pilots and gunners, but to fulfill that role the Brotherhood of the sword have Tech-operators. Tech-operators are tech-marines with a limited techmarine repairing training but their focus are to drive, piloting and operate the guns on the vehicles.

As most of the fleet are constantly split up in different missions, it is a tremendous task to command and administrate the full fleet. Therefore, the role of Master of the fleet and titel: Admiral are been given to captain with the most void-combat experience, but he have no longer have company command and will most likely never see real ground combat anymore. The admiral are stationed on the Sword of Omens - Flagship of the Brotherhood of the Sword.

Primarch's Gift

Early during of the Indomitus Crusade, at small fleet carrying group of tech-priests and Sisters of Silence, asked permission to dock at the brotherhoods flagship.

They introduced themselves at the "torchbearers" and they had a precious gift to give; genetic engineering technology to create Primaris Space Marines and 2 companies of Greyshíelds to fill up the ranks after the losses in the Second Tyrannic War

Lord Scipio and his captains had concerns over the integration of the Greyshíelds among their battle companies and if these new warriors could adapt to the Brotherhoods ways of war.

But the greyshields were given the tasks to re-establish the 4th and 6th companies, that was utterly destroyed by the battle against Hive Fleet Ouroboros in 999.M41

Due to recent catastrophic events of Era Indomitus the brotherhood have lost all communication with the rest of the Imperium and the genetic engineering technology to add 3 Primaris gene-seed implant organs are not working properly. For unknown reasons the the primaris gene-seed is far more genetically unstable and the success rate are below average compare to other chapters. Therefore the chapter only have enough primaris reinforcements to barely support the 2 current Primaris Companies (4th and 6th)

On the other hand, the transformation to become a firstborn Astartes are still fully functional and success rates high.

Recruitment

As the The Brotherhood of the Sword are a fleet-based chapter, they draw their recruits from a variety of planets, mainly from the feudal world of Kronite.

Kronite and the Tozern sector was first planets that the brotherhood liberated from the Xenos invasion. Therefore the chapter have a special relationship to Kronite and its population.

Chapter Beliefs

In the reclusiam of flagship – “Sword of Omen” lies the sword and cloak of Almace; the first chapter master of the Brotherhood. The battle brothers loyalty lies with the emperor and their father Primarch Rogal Dorn but their devotions lies at Almace. He led the Brotherhood of the Sword through the darkest times i their history; the very first journey into the forsaken Pelegron Sector. A period where the Brotherhood manage to gain control of this sector, a task that many other chapters had failed.

Ancient Saverio 3rd company

Banner of Almace

Almace always wore a large dark blue robe over his silver Artificer Armour and in battle he was equipped with winged Jump pack. When he descended onto the battlefield with the blue-flaming “Sword of Omen” lifting high, he looked like an avenging Angel and instantly putting fear into the hearts of his enemies. How Almace got winged Jumppack are not confirmed but tales are told that he was given to him by a dying Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard as respect of Almaces honor and courage.

Almace are pictured on all company banners and vehicle ornament as a blue robed avenging angel.

As tradition in chapter , a marine that have performed an extraordinary deed on the battlefield, is awarded the honor of wearing the blue robe of Almace.

Deathwatch Service

Due to the close relation to the deathwatch, the Brotherhood of the sword members frequently submit themselves to the Deathwatch service.

Chapter Gene-Seed

As a Successor Chapter of the Imperial Fists Legion, The Brotherhood of the Sword share a genetic legacy with them and have inherited many of the characteristics of their Primarch Rogal Dorn. As was the intent at the time of the Sentinel Founding, the gene-seed of the Brotherhood remains stable and shows no signs of mutation or Chaos contamination.

Combat Doctrine

Lieutenant Guryon 3rd company

Assault Lieutenant Guryon 1st company

The Brotherhood of the Sword are truly masters of the Hammer & Anvil military strategy. Pinning their enemy with their Battleline Squads (Tactical or Intercessor) and Fire Support (Devastator, Aggressor, or Hellblaster), then using Close Support (Assault, Outrider and Inceptor) and 1st company to envelope the enemy from behind and flanks, thus pinning or hammering the enemy into the anvil (Battleline Squads) for the slaughter.

To perfect this strategy, the brotherhood have specializes their Lieutenants, Chaplains and Librarians as either Tactical (battleline) or Assault (Close Support).

All recon and covert operations are assigned to the Scouts and Primaris Vanguard Space Marines of the 10th Company.
