" As we go foward, we prepare our souls to meet death, which is always on our horizon... this is the last declaration of Apollodorus, a humble servant of Mankind. May the Emperor forgive our sins... "
— The last transmission of Grand Master Apollodorus shortly before meeting his own death in the Battle of Reesman Secundus

The Asturyan Wardens are a semi-Codex compliant Loyalist Space Marine Chapter created in the 4th Founding's final years. They are know for being very good defenders, having a large fleet, extensive use of bolters and having close relations to the Inquisitors of Ordo Xenos. But they're most famous for their attitude towards humans, who they see as the reason for Emperor's sacrifice, and thus they make their safety one of their top priorities. This attitude as made them friends and allies with the Space Wolves and Salamanders Space Marine Chapters.

Originally a fleet-based Chapter, they eventually decided to settle in Kannon, a planet in the Reductus Sector.

Chapter History

Chapter records indicate that the Asturyan Wardens were founded in the last years of the 4th Fouding with orders to defend Reductus Sector.

Originally a fleet-based Chapter, they wandered around the Reductus Sector defending it from the enemies of the Emperor. At a moments notice, the Asturyan Wardens would come like angels and deal with the enemy, only to leave soon after. The efects of the Chapter's success were immediate, and the High Lords of Terra were most pleased by such results. It was in the aftermath of the Battle of Kannon that the Asturyan Wardens decided to settle in the planet, making it their homeworld.

Notable Campaigns

Battle of Kannon (132-133.M33)

Grand Master Seneca came with the full might of the Chapter and with help of Battlefleet Reductus, to the jungle world of Kannon, invaded by Orks lead by Warboss Bonebrekkah. They had never faced such a difficult challenge before. During the operation, the Asturyan Wardens discovered an old Great Crusade era Space Marine fortress-monastery abandoned. As such, this stronghold became the foward base of operations for the remainer of the battle. Even though the full Chapter was present, the Warboss Bonebreakkah proved to be cunning. 1000 Space Marines were struggling in a fight with millions of orks. When the tide of the battle became unfavourable to the Angels of Death, the Grand Master himself lead a strike team made up of half of the 1st Company and all of his Honour Guard members, to personally end the Ork incursion by chopping off the Warboss's head himself. The mission proved successful, the Ork fleet was all but destroyed, and the major threat as over. The surviving Orks on the planet retreated to the jungles, but they proved no challenge. In the end, Grand Master Seneca decided to make Kannon the Chapter's Homeworld, with the old fortress-monastery as their new headquarters, and from there resume the orders of their inception.

Solemn Losses (???.M34)

Not much is known of this campaign. It's know that it was probably the greatest defeat the Asturyan Wardens ever faced, losing 5 entire companies, including the 1st Company. The Grand Master was killed in battle. 1 Emperor Class Battleship, 3 Strike Cruisers, 5 Battle Barges and 9 Vanguard Class Light Cruisers were lost, amongst many other vessels.

This is the furthest the Chapter records go into this campaign. The final records indicate that a Lord Inquisitor of Ordo Malleus and a Lord Inquisitor of Ordo Hereticus were present, and that they ordered many documents to be redacted or burned. Such was the magnitude of this shameful incident that only the Grand Master and members of the Council of Lords know about it, but it's an untalkable topic. Besides them, only the Inquisition and the Emperor know about it.

Whatever happened, it was a disaster and the Asturyan Wardens make no effort whatsoever to discover what happened, least they learn anything they shouldn't...

Battle of Reesman Secundus (936-937.M35)

The rich hive world of Reesman Secundus, located near Kannon, was sudenly and unexpectadly evolved in a very large turmoil and soon, full fledged rebellion. The cause was quick to find out, the heretics believed that they lived meaningless lives, and they easely fell to the lies of a life full of pleasure with no pain and no sense of duty whatsoever. Such insurection was instigated by cultists of the Prince of Pleasure, Slaanesh.

Grand Master Apollodorus personally lead the whole elite 1st Company along with Lord Warden Rhyannon. The situation was dire, and neither the Imperial Guard nor the Imperial Navy were able to lend any quick aid. The Asturyan Wardens were alone with the planet's PDF and SDF. Thousands, if not millions, poured out of nowhere to kill the Emperor's loyal subjects and destroy his great Imperium. In such situation, a normal reasonable commander would enforce exterminatus upon the planet, but not Apollodorus, not the Asturyan Wardens. They would kill all heretics, root and stem, and spare the innocents. Such task wasn't simple, and definitely not easy. Soon, the entire 2nd, 3rd and 4th companies also joined the fray.

After 4 months of a hardous bloody campaign, the Asturyan Wardens were finaly able to identify the both the Keeper of Secrets and the chief cultist, who was revealed to be the Planetary Governor, Valens. Rhyannon was ordered to kill the Governor, while Apollodorus was going to kill Slaanesh's Greater Deamon. Rhyannon was successful, unceremoniously killing the delusional heretic. Yet the Grand Master was unheard-of. Soon, Rhyannon, along with Lord Librarian Chordalyus and his squad, were deployed to the Grand Master's last known position, the Great Cathedral of Kannon. There they found the great abomination of Slaanesh, surrounded by the dead bodies of the Grand Master and his entire retinue.

Ryannon knew that the battle would end, either way. Hundreds of heretics surrounded the squad, while the Lord Warden battled the Greater Deamon in single combat. Despite his superhuman skill, the Lord Warden could not match the unholy speed of his foe. All of a sudden his right arm was severed, and he was lying in ground. With wounds far surpassing his healing capabilities, it seemed as though he would meet his end. All of a sudden, Lord Librarian Chordalyus appeared behind the great beast, with the sword of the now deceased Grand Master, Gryffonyte, in his hand and with the Staff of Rhelyctor in the other. In an epic duel, and pushing all of his psychic capabilities to the limits, the Lord Librarian proved victorious, stabbing the foul beast in it's heart with Gryffonyte. Soon as the heretics realised they were doomed, they fled the colossal cathedral only to be caught by the incoming reinforcements of the 2nd Company.

Upon returning to the Chapter, Rhyannon was immediately encased within a Dreadnought, serving with loyalty and valour henceforth. He became a figure of legend, a revered hero of Chapter, and he eventually gained the rank of First Dreadnought. Lord Librarian Chordalyus was elected the new Grand Master, the first Librarian ever to hold such title.

Even though millions were dead, the campaign soon came to an end with an astonishing victory for the Imperium. All the heretics were killed, a rich planet and it's population were saved, and a new Planetary Governor was elected. As a token of aprecciation, the new governor signed a treaty with the Asturyan Wardens, granting them all resources available along with as many recruits as the Chapter wanted. The Planetary Governor also immediately ordered the construction of two Lunar Class Cruisers for the Chapter. These ships were named Vengence of Apollodorus and Thunderdome respectively. Thus, Reesman Secundus became the second most important world to the Chapter.

Eventually, Chordalyus discovered that Gryffonyte was psychically enchanted by unknown means. Conducting the most severe of trials, he found out that the weapon wasn't chaos tainted nor warp enchanted, yet this is the furthest the Asturyan Wardens know of the Grand Master's badge of office. Curiously, whatever power is embedded inside the sword, only the current Grand Master or a very powerful psyker can call it forth. Without any suprise, the sword is one of the most obscure items in the entire Chapter.

Raid on Kannon (194.M39)

While most of the Chapter and almost the entire fleet was away fighting the Orks ravaging many planets throughout Segmentum Tempestus, the Dark Eldar launched a suprise raid on Kannon. First Dreadnought Rhyannon was awaken and given overall command of the defense. Only half of the 7th Company was present when the raid began, and the only ship present, the Battle Barge Fury of Khannae, was undergoing repairs on Reesman Secundus.

The initial attack was directed at the fortress-monastery of Castellum Invicta. The full half of the 7th Company, except one squad, was deployed in defense of their home. The only squad left out was commanded by Veteran Chief Warden Manasses, which was ordered to stop the repair operation of the Fury of Khannae and make haste to provide close air support on Kannon.

First Dreadnought Rhyannon mounted an incredible defense, and the initial attack was held back. However, the Drukhari kept raiding the stronghold. With such small numbers and many hundreds of enemies, Rhyannon couldn't sally out and launch a counter-offensive, and thus the only outside support was that of Manasses, who was in low orbit constantly bombarding the (predictable) Dark Eldar base of operations in the jungle and those who dared to attack the fortress-monastery.

However after the fourth attack on the fortress-monastery, Rhyannon came to the conclusion that the enemy wasn't commited to take the mighty stronghold. The assaults were simply too soft with no real commitment. This could only mean that the attacks were only a diversion. Realising that, the First Dreadnought immediately launched a counter-attack, only for the Dark Eldar to retreat from the planet. Soon they found out that the memorial Pillar for the Heroes of the Great Crusade, built deep within the jungle, had been desecrated and destroyed, with hundreds of Feral Ork corpses surrouding it. Chapter records indicated that buried within the monument was an ancient Eldar artifact, rumoured to have anti-psychic capabilities that couldn't be wielded as a weapon by any human. It seemed that the Dark Eldar were able to fool the Asturyan Wardens and gain an ancient powerful artifact for their own twisted plans.

Battle of Lathurn (689-690.M41)

Lathurn was an armory world near the Mandragoran Stars, in the Segmentum Tempestus. A rocky world, Lathurn provided the Imperium a safe haven for depositing war material. Relatively peaceful, it had a small garrison for an armory world.

By 689.M41 everything changed. Suddenly a massive Ork WAAAGH! under the command of Warboss Mahgnokk assaulted the world, with the intention of arming the millions of orks with a vast array of sophisticated Imperial weapons. The objective was to use those weapons to bring war to the entire Segmentum Tempestus. The Imperium response was to deploy most of Battlefleet Reductus along portions of Battlefleet Tempestus and Battlefleet Forsarr. Under overall command of the entire operation was the young promissing Lord Warden Pharmenyon, commander of the 3rd Company, with the whole Asturyan Warden fleet with him. The mission was to defend the world with the help of the local garrison. The Imperial Guard regiments of Krieg were being called forth, however they would take some time before being combat available to the cause.

When the forces of the Imperium arrived, they were saddened to discover that the planet had already fallen, due to the incopetent leadership of the Planetary Governor, now dead. The situation wasn't any good for the Imperium, for the Ork WAAAGH! was already looting the weapons. Without a moment's notice, Pharmenyon launched various hit and run attacks with the Chapter's fleet on the larger Ork fleet, while the Imperial Navy was hidden behind the planet's dead moon. The Orks, finally having a serious foe, followed the Asturyan Warden's fleet with most of their own fleet, tactically blinded by their war lust.

Finally, when the Orks reached the dark side of the moon, the Imperial Navy ambushed the unprepared foe. The ambush had worked, and the larger enemy fleet was no match for the colossal battleships of both the Imperial Navy and the Adeptus Astartes. Soon enought most of the xenos fleet was all but wreckage and space debris. It was time to clear to remaining Ork ships in Lathurn. Despite their fierce nature, the remaining Ork ships were simply not enought to deal with the mighty Imperial fleet. However, even with the space battle won, the planet was still controled by millions of Ork, and Mahgnokk was still alive and in command. A standstill had begun.

The Imperial command was divided. Most Imperial Navy officers proposed the land assualt by the arriving Krieg regiments under the cover of their ships. The Adeptus Astartes were unconvinced. Pharmenyon knew that those many Orks with those many weapons would be a very costy mission for the Imperium, with no gains. The population was all dead, the world was simply isolated and with no natural resources of any importance. The future battle would simply bring thousands of good Imperial Guard soldiers to die for an unecessary world, with no current importance. He knew the weapons they were trying to rescue would be worn out and depleted by the time they would be taking the planet, and the already damaged infrastructure would be all but destroyed. The Imperial Navy and Imperial Guard officers were unable to think this far as Pharmenyon did.

News from the Segmentum Command arrived. The Chaos Space Marines of the World Eaters were wreacking havoc and destruction in the entire Segmentum Tempestus. The Battle for Lathurn needed to end quicky in order to face this new threat. Pharmenyon saw only one option. Exterminatus. With the Council of Lords approval, the exterminatus took place. Millions of Orks burned in the holy fire of the Imperial Navy and Adeptus Astartes. By the grace of the Emperor however, in the end it was found that one bunker arsenal hadn't been destroyed nor pillaged. Pharmenyon personally lead a strike team to the arsenal's front door. It was discovered that that ordnance depot belonged to the Adeptus Mechanicus, and that 30% of the planet's entire arsenal was being held there.

Finally, the Segmentum Command declared the Battle of Lathurn a decisive victory for the Imperium. Few ships were destroyed, a planet was decimated and now the Imperium had a dead rocky world on their hands. Regardless, there were very few Imperial casualties throughout the operation (considering the millions of enemy Orks), a potencial larger threat was ended infant, almost 1/3rd of the weapons were recovered (which happened to be the most advanced of those stored on the planet), and the arrayed forces were immediately ready to be deployed to fight the new World Eaters threat.

Lord Warden Pharmenyon was declared a hero by the Asturyan Wardens. He was awarded the rank of Master of the Fleet by Grand Master Askhanyus, and was personally commended by the Lord High Admiral of the Segmentum Tempestus for his astonishing void combat skills, surpassing even Space Marine standards.

Salvation of Sunaella (748-750.M41)

After the Ultramarines costly victory in the Battle for Macragge, Hive Fleet Behemoth scattered into multiple smaller tendrils. One of these tendrils entered Segmentum Tempestus, looking to consume the unprotected worlds in the edge of the galaxy. Unable to follow suit, the Ultramarines Chapter Master Marneus Calgar requested the aid of their long time allies, the Asturyan Wardens of the Reductus Sector. Grand Master Askhanyus deployed most of the Chapter's fleet and the entire Chapter save the 5th and 10th Companies which were the engaged in another operation. The reason for such a large contigent for a small tendril isn't random. Askhanyus befriended the now dead Captain Saul Invictus. He sought avenge him, all Ultramarines dead in the Tyrannic War, and all of the Emperor's subjects that were devoured by the infamous xenos.

Soon enought the Asturyan Wardens catched up with the Tyranid's fleet while these were assaulting Sunanella, a small medieval world in the outskirts of the Veiled Region. The Chapter's fleet, commanded by Lord Warden Pharmenyon, immedialtely attacked the unprotected rearguard of the enemy fleet. All the while Grand Master Askhanyus personally commanded the 1st and 2nd Companies to aid the Planetary Governor in the planet's capital.

Askhanyus quicky secured the capital and the governor. However, the outskirts of the city were being ravaged by the xenos. An orbital bombardment was ordered, and most of the Tyranids were killed in the fire of the Adeptus Astartes ships. Soon after, Pharmenyon declared the space battle won. The entire enemy fleet was destroyed. The Apocalypse-class Battleship Adamasthor personally and single handedly destroyed the Hive Ship that presumably held the Norn-Queen, along with many other ships.

The Planetary Governor declared the battle won, and Sunaella was liberated from the Great Devourer. However, thousands of Tyranids escaped to the world's jungles. Grand Master Askhanyus personally led the cleansing operations of the world. By 750.M41 the world was declared fully-cleansed of any remaining Tyranid bioforms.

Assault on the Winged Cleaver (789.M41)

In 759.M41 the Overlord-Class Battlecruiser Winged Cleaver appeared on the Reductus Sector. However, the ship didn't respond to any messages, nor did it send any. As the ship grew closer to Reesman Secundus, Grand Master Askhanyus led the entire 1st Company in a boarding action.

He was sure that the vessel had been taken over, but he didn't knew by what foe. He was quick to discover, for as soon as they landed, they were attacked by Genestealers. The entire ship had no crew, only Genestealers. Grand Master Askhanyus was suprised by the amount of xenos there were, but he was unaflicted in his duty. He planned to clean the ship of the xenos filth, and then incorporate it into the Chapter's fleet.

Initially they were very succesful. By the 3rd week half the ship was already cleared, with only 15 casualties. However, the more they drew closer to the Genestealer Patriarch, the more casualties they took, and more slower was the progress made. Eventually they reached the beast's chamber. There the cleansing would end. The Asturyan Wardens faced the last of the Genestealers, along with the Patriach. In a fierce melee, Askhanyus was mortally wounded by the Cult's leader. However, he was able to partially blind the Genestealer Patriach. Seeing his Grand Master falling, First Warden Mykhael came to his rescue. Grabbing Gryffonyte, and handling his own sword, he dual wielded his way to victory. In an astonishing fight, Mykhael was able to avenge Askhanyus.

The ship was finally cleared. The price however, was high. In the end, the Grand Master along with both Warden Commanders and half of the 1st Company were killed. In his dying breath, Askhanyus expressed his wish to have Mykhael elected as his replacement. Thus the Overlord-Class Battlecruiser was finally added to the Asturyan Wardens fleet, and Mykhael was elected as the new Grand Master by the Council of Lords in 790.M41.

Defense of Gaerios Mundi (793-794.M41)

Gaerios Mundi was a Desert World with a mining population of 5.000.000 people, located in the eastern fringes of Segmentum Ultima. Extremely rich in Promethium, all planetary efforts were to extract the material as quick as possible. However in 793.M41 it was detected that a xenos species had stopped the mining efforts. It was impossible to continue for the xenos were very powerful. There was no Imperial Regiment, and the PDF couldn't handle the threat, so the Planetary Governor had to contact outside help. The Asturyan Wardens responded by sending the 7th Company commanded by Lord Warden Julydermes with the help of Lord Librarian Thaemond, to discover who the xenos were and to exterminate them.

When they arrived in the Battle Barge Thessalyan and the Strike Cruiser Malevolent Redeemer, accompanied by 4 Gladius Frigates, they detected a massive xenos fleet aproaching the planet. This was then discovered to be a Tyranid Splinter Fleet from Hive Fleet Behemoth. Immediately, the Lord Warden contacted the Council of Lords to redeploy the Chapter's fleet to combat this deadly threat. The response: only the Apocalypse-Class Battleship Adamasthor was available, for it had only recently finished repairs. It was decided that, besides the Flagship, the 9th Company was to make a full speed jorney to Gaerios Mundi.

The Asturyan Wardens had a plan. Lord Warden Julydermes was to deploy with the 7th Company to the planet to face the yet unidentified foe with the air support of the Strike Cruiser Malevolent Redeemer, while the Lord Librarian was to take the Battle Barge Thessalyan and the Gladius Frigates to do hit-and-run attacks on the approaching Tyranids.

The Lord Warden soon found out that the enemy xenos were no more than the Necrons, now being awaken from the worldwide excavations. Besieged on all sides, Julydermes ordered an evacuation. The situation was untenable, and the Strike Cruiser deployed to close air support. During the evacuation, the Lord Warden was killed in action by the Necron Lord. The Strike Cruiser suffered severe damage, but most of the Company was able to make it. The Lord Librarian was recalled and given overall command of the operation.

When he arrived, the planet was in all out war. The few PDF soldiers that remained to make a symbolic last stand were quickly terminated. Gaerios Mundi seemed lost to the Imperium. The forces available were unable to take the planet. Faced with such ods, Thaemond decided to lure the Necron Fleet towards the Tyranids. Via orbital bombardment he was able to make the Necron Fleet follow him. At the same time he ordered all possible material, crew and Asturyan Wardens to be transfered from the Malevolent Redeemer to the Thessalyan.

Soon he found the Hive Fleet, and they found themselves trapped betwen the hammer and the anvil. The Necrons began engaging the Great Devourer with much fury. The Tyranids fought the Necrons with much fervor. Meanwhile in the middle, the Asturyan Wardens clinged to survival. In a very calculated decision, he ordered the Malevolent Redeemer to overload it's warp drives. In the resulting massive explosion, half of both enemies fleets were destroyed. However, the battle was not won, and both xenos renewed their attacks. By this time the Battle Barge Thessalyan was able to escape, however it suffered extensive damage. Only 2 Gladius Frigates survived as well. It seemed as though one of the xenos was to be the victor.

Suddenly however, the Apocalypse-Class Battleship Adamasthor arrived, along with 4 Gladius Frigates and the 9th Company. Unexpectadly, the Ultramarines Strike Cruiser Valin's Revenge also arrived. The Imperials were now in the upper hand. They decided to fall back however. As such, the Great Devourer assaulted Gaerios Mundi after destroying the Necron Fleet. The Necrons were now facing sure defeat against the never ending Tyranids. But then the Imperial Strike Force attacked the rearguard of the Tyranids. The three way battle was renewed.

By this time the Necrons were all but defeated. The Tyranids began facing the Imperials, who had now the upper hand. The Adamasthor proved it's might and power by punching through the xeno's fleet. In an epic fight, the Space Marines were victorious.

The planet was cleared. All Tyranids were dead, and few Necrons remained. The Asturyan Wardens deployed to the last Necron stronghold, which was quick to fall. Casualties were almost half of the 7th Company, 1 Strike Cruiser, 2 Gladius Frigates and a badly damaged Battle Barge. However, both xenos were dead, the Tech-Priests were summoned to study the Necron facilities, the planet was destroyed but it was now secured, and the valuable Promethium was now ready to be extracted again. The Imperium was again victorious through the Asturyan Wardens.

First Battle of Arkhadia IV (898-899.M41)

The hive world of Arkhadia IV with 6 billion inhabitants, located in the Uhulis Sector in the Segmentum Tempestus, was complicated planet. Despite upholding all quotas to the Adeptus Administratum, the planet suffered from civil unrest and attemped revolutions almost every month. In 898.M41 one succeeded.

The Asturyan Wardens, under the new Lord Warden Vhyrdum, were deployed to handle de situation in any way they saw fit, take back the planet, and kill all heretics. Vhyrdum deployed the entire 2nd and 5th Companies. With him were the 939th Cadian Regiment and the 32nd Reesman Secundus Regiment.

Even thought information stated that the entire 6 billion people were corrupted, and the most safe engagement was exterminatus, Vhyrdum disregarded such claims and proceded to seperate loyalists from heretics. The first step was a ferocious orbital bombardment from the Battle Barges Revenant of Irathei and Fury of Khannae upon the heretics stronghold, the Planetary Governor's Palace. Soon enough, it was all rumble. While the bombardment took place, Vhyrdum deployed the entire 5th Company to help defend the last loyalist garrison where most of the loyalist soldiers and civilians were gathered, while he would personally command the 2nd Company to strike at the heart of the heretics. This heart was made manifest by a a World Eaters Champion, Ganaloth. With him were thousands of Khornate Deamons.

Even thought they were outnumbered, Vhyrdum was keen on killing the foul traitor of the 12th Legion before more innocents were killed or corrupted. Despite the chaotic powers Ganaloth called forth, he was no match to the fury and raw force that Vhyrdum had. In a quick duel, the Lord Warden cracked the Champion's left leg before unceremoniously smashing his head into his armor with his massive thunder hammer Deliverer. Before long, the Khornate Deamons dissipated and the heretics were left defenseless before the Imperial advance.

The heretics were all but terminated, and the planet was once again safe. The death toll was of 1.5 billion people, amongst traitors and loyalist civilians killed. But still Arkhadia IV wasn't done with war yet...

Second Battle of Arkhadia IV (901-902.M41)

After most of the planet was already repaired from the damaged of the First Battle, the Second Battle of Arkhadia IV begun. A massive Ork WAAAGH! under Warboss Braksmak consisting of millions of Orks invaded the world. A distress signal was sent, and Lord Warden Vhyrdum was the first to respond.

When he arrived with the 2nd Company, he found that the situation was very bad. The Orks far outnumbered the Imperial, both with manpower and ships. In an immediate response, Vhyrdum personaly commanded the 2nd Company to the planet, while the Battle Barge Revenant of Irathei was to do hit-and-run attacks on the massive Ork fleet while waiting for reinforcements.

Grand Warden Mykhael, along with the commander of the 3rd Company Pharmenyon were gathering a relief force, but it would take at least nine months to assemble the Imperial Navy and regiments of the Imperial Guard, and travel to Arkhadia IV. Mykhael sent the only other immediately available Company, the 1st Company of Lord Warden Odysseus, to help Vhyrdum defend the world while waiting for the relief force.

Upon arriving, Odysseus did the same as the Lord Warden of the 2nd Company. He personally commanded the 1st Company to the planet, and ordered the Retribution-Class Battleship Inevitable Despair to join the Revenant of Irathei in the space battle.

After three months the entire planet save for four strongholds had fallen. The PDF forces and the Imperial Guard Regiments of the 32nd Reesman Secundus and the 939th Cadian Regiments stationed on the planet were already sustaining heavy casualties. The Asturyan Wardens were still with relative few casualties, but they were being worn out little by little. By the sixth month it seemed that the planet would most likely fall. The Orks were simply too many.

However by the seventh month Grand Master Mykhael arrived with the entire 5th and 9th Companies, and fresh suplies. They then proceeded to aid their brothers. Hope was renewed, but the battle was still far from over. The Apocalypse-Class Battleship Adamasthor proved to be a challenge to the Ork fleet, for the sheer amount of firepower it had was tremendous. However, even the most powerful ship of the Chapter had to retreat and do hit-and-run attacks with the other ships. It's known that in that time the three ships dealt considerable blows to the Ork fleet.

By the eight month the situation was critical. Despite the few Adeptus Astartes casualties, the Imperial Guard sustained critical casualties; the PDF was all but destroyed, the 939th Cadian Regiment and the 32nd Reesman Secundus were to follow.

By the ninth month, the Orks were finally pushing on the last stronghold. The ammo was running low, and death was close. In a last ditch of effort, Grand Master Mykhael charged with the remaining Astartes towards Warboss Braksmak position, who was leading the attack. The Ork was naive enought to think that he could kill the Asturyan Wardens Grand Master, and in a brief duel, Mykhael channeled all the psychic power from Gryffonyte and dealt the killing blow upon the foul beast. Yet, the battle was not won. Despite being leaderless, the Orks continued to charge.

Three days later the Orks were already killing themselves over who was to be their leader. It so happened that during that time, Lord Warden Pharmenyon arrived with the entire Chapter fleet and three other Companies, along with parts of Battlefleet Tempestus and most of Battlefleet Uhulis, and with three fresh Reesman Secundus Regiments. Soon enought the Ork fleet was destroyed and Imperial forces proceded to clean the planet from the xenos taint.

The death toll was heavy for the defenders. Despite the low casualties amongst the Asturyan Wardens, two regiments and one PDF force were knocked out of combat, for such was their casualties that they couldn't continue waging war for a time. Millions were dead.

The rivalry between Vhyrdum and Odysseus began in this battle, or so they say...

Siege of the Fenris System (~999.M41)

The Asturyan Wardens took part in the Dark Angel led coalition to aid their beleaguered allies, the Space Wolves. The Chapter, under Lord Warden Pharmenyon, contributed with the entire 3rd Company, the Retribution-Class Battleship Hammer of Apollo, the Battle Barge Everlasting Will, two Vanguard-Class Light Cruisers and seven Gladius-Class Frigates. The Chapter took part in the bombardment of Fenris. However, they didn't deployed in the land battle, they only fought in the space battle. In the end, as the Great Wolf Logan Grimnar departed to Cadia. The Asturyan Wardens were to follow, but first they needed to gather their entire fleet. Some time after the Great Wolf and the others left, the rest of the Asturyan Warden's fleet arrived, under the command of Grand Master Mykhael himself. Finally, they were ready to aid in the desperate defence of the Cadian Sector.

Skirmish over Cadia (000.M42)

During warp travel however, the Astropaths and Navigators were suddenly and deliberately attacked by the psychic forces of the Immaterium. Although no one knew what happened, they carried on anyway.

When they arrived however, they found the Cadian Sector all but destroyed, and massive chaotic fleet under the command of Abbadon the Despoiler over it. A quick skirmish begun, but even with one of the most powerful Space Marine fleets in the entire Imperium, the Asturyan Wardens had to retreat. They were no match for the gigantic Despoiler's fleet, and in a coordinated retreat, they suffered no real casualties.

Correctly guessing that the survivers from Cadia had retreated to Terra, and that it was the most well defended world in the galaxy, Mykhael ordered the entire fleet to make haste to Kannon, that had started sending distress calls. Kannon was under siege, along with Reesman Secundus.

Siege of Kannon (999.M41-???.M42)

In 999.M41 four entire companies were present in Castellum Invicta. These were the 1st, 2nd, 5th and 10th Companies. Under overall command was Odyesseus, Lord Warden of the 1st Company, along with Lord Warden Vhyrdum of the 2nd Company. In the final days of 999.M41 however, a massive Ork WAAAGH! under the command of the great Warboss Judrok, a prominient Ork from the Empire of Octarius, invaded Segmentum Tempestus. After ravaging many worlds, the gigantic Ork wave finally arrived at Kannon and Reesman Secundus, planing to invade both worlds at once. With a space blockade and virtually no warships, the Asturyan Wardens were unable to lend any aid to their Imperial allies on the important hive world.

Even though he was but an Ork, Judrok proved to be surprisingly smart and cunning. He tried at all times to avoid direct combat with the Adeptus Astartes. His goal was to wipe out the Imperial defenses across the world, leaving Castellum Invicta and Capura for last. The Asturyan Wardens divided their forces in two: one force under Lord Warden Odysseus and Vhyrdum that included the 1st and 2nd Companies to defend the capital of the world, Capura; while the other force under the now awaken First Dreadnought Rhyannon that comprised of the 5th and 10th Companies would remain defending Castellum Invicta. Most of the planet's population was able to take shelter in either Capura or Castellum Invicta. It was estimated that 1 million people were in the capital, while 100.000 people were in the gigantic dungeons and caverns of the fortress-monastery that extended deep within the mountain that was build and fit to house an entire Adeptus Astartes Legion. The rest were either missing in action or killed in action.

Some months into the fight and only Capura and Castellum Invicta were controled by the Imperium. The native population of Feral Orks, numbering in the thousands, joined the WAAAGH!. Even though they were confident they could get through this, the Asturyan Wardens were not sure when would reinforcements come, for they didn't have enought ammo to kill millions of Ork if they kept charging. Without ammo for bolters, their chances would drop.

On Reesman Secundus however things were different, as the defenders had millions of conscripts and 300.000 Imperial Guard Soldiers from 15 entire Reesman Secundus Regiments. They had both the manpower and ammo to hold. Due to the warp irregularities, it is unknown how much time it took, but it's believed that at least some years passed until the siege was lifted. In the end, Grand Master Mykhael arrived and, soon after, the Indomitus Crusade. Reesman Secundus was succesfully liberated, but only after tens of millions were dead.

By this time in Kannon, the situation was desperate. The Orks were apparently winning, and Khornate Deamons began pouring out of the sky due to a warp rift that emerged after the Great Rift was created. The deamons, ever thirsty for blood, faced the Orks in a brutal melee. The Imperial defenders could do nothing but to see their world being ravaged by a incomprehensible savage total war between a species that thrives from war and Khorne, the Chaos God for War and Blood. Finnaly, years of waiting had come to an end when Grand Master Mykhael arrived with Lord Warden Pharmenyon with the entire Chapter fleet and the other Companies. With them came the Indomitus Crusade, and the hard won battle was over. Millions of Orks died, but the Warboss escaped off-world. Few thousands retreated back to what remained of the jungle. The Feral Ork population would not disapear with that victory. The deamons continued the struggle against the mighty fleet, but the warp rift closed due to the Warp becoming more stable. Both enemies were defeated.

In the end, 70% of the 1st and 2nd Companies were killed, while the 5th suffered 80% casualties and the 10th was half dead. All 10th survivors were immediately promoted to a Battle Company, and the Primaris Space Marines were finally inntroduced to the Chapter. Grand Master Mykhael offered the entire Chapter and the entire fleet to Lord Commander Roboute Guilliman, however the Avenging Son declined, stating that the Asturyan Wardens were to carry on their duty, defend Redutcus Sector and Segmentum Tempestus as a whole.

The foul Ork Judrok managed to escape and survive, retreating back to Octarius to face the Tyranids from Hive Fleet Leviathan. Instead of persuing, Grand Master Mykhael contacted Inquisitor Kryptman and Chaplain Ortan Cassius to discuss what to do with the Tyranid-Ork war. Between them all is the concern that a bigger, more deadly Hive Fleet may be underway, but so far their concerns have not come to fruition...yet.

Departmento Cartographicae pict-file of Kannon, Chapter home world of the Asturyan Wardens.

Conquered in the Great Crusade by an unknown Space Marine Legion, Kannon is a feudal jungle world with 5,400,000 inhabitants, a vast jungle, many large long rivers, and a few mountains. It's usually foggy, drizzling or raining all year. It's in the biggest mounatin that the fortress-monastery of Castellum Invicta is located. The biggest city and capital is called Capura, located near the banks of the biggest river of the world, Thaguz. The noble families from this planet have close ties to Grand Master Mykhael, for he himself originated from the most powerful of these families. The practise of nobles joining the Chapter is common, for Lord Warden Vhyrdum is also from one of these families.

The population has to deal with constant raids by Feral Orks remainig from the Battle of Kannon. One of the most prominient organizations in the planet is the Hunters Guild, a sect specialised in hunting and killing Orks. They are usually employed by the noble families to fight back against the constant Ork threat. Most of the Chapter's recruits come from this organization, which is all but too happy to see their recruits succeed while directly serving the Emperor. This normalcy has increased the number of Asturyan Wardens serving in the Deathwatch, and thus, improved relations with Ordo Xenos Inquisitors. Lord Warden Cyceros of the 10th Company used to be the best scout of his time. Lord Warden Pharmenyon also came from this guild.

It's tithe grade is Aptus Non and the Chapter has a Direct Rule of the planet and it's population.

Fortress-Monastery

Castellum Invicta is an incredibly large fortress-monastery located in Kannon. It has never fallen to any foe, earning the name Invicta. It was built upon and inside the biggest mountain in the world by an unkown Space Marine Legion that conquered the planet during the Great Crusade. It was later abandoned during the Horus Heresy. It was made the Asturyan Warden's home after the Battle for Kannon. It has large caves and dungeons, and it's fit to house and hold an entire Adeptus Astartes Legion. It has a gigantic great hall and a Hall of Heroes, were the names of the Chapter's most prominient sons are forever inscribed. All names are from Wardens who are dead. The only exception is that of First Dreadnought Rhyannon, who is half dead inside is his Dreadnought. Other names include those of Grand Master Apollodorus, Grand Master and Lord Librarian Chordalyus, Grand Master Seneca and the first Lord Librarian, Rhelyctor.

Other Recruiting Worlds

Reesman Secundus

A rich, densely populated hive world, with a population of 100.000.000.000 human souls, it provides the Chapter with many abundant resources that Kannon can't supply. Even though Kannon is the main recruiting world of the Asturyan Wardens, some recruits come from this planet, although it's rare. However, a vast majority of Chapter Serfs come from this planet. This planet has a Planetary Governor, however the Asturyan Wardens hold a Distant Rule of the world. It's has a large PDF and SDF to defend it. Usually the SDF cooperates with the Asturyan Wardens main fleet, and in case of a large invasion, the Chapter's Master of the Fleet takes overall command of the force entirely.

It's tithe grade is the most demanding, Exactis Extremis. There is a medium sized shipyard above the planet. However, the vast majority of the work is about repairing ships of the Asturyan Warden's Fleet and the Imperial Navy, not making them. The Imperial Guard Regiments drawn from this planet are the Reesman Secundus Regiments, or the Reesmans for short. These regiments excel at urban fight, trench and atricional warfare, and ranged combat. There are around 400 active regiments. Their battle profile stands between something like the Cadian Regiments and Krieg Regiments. Usually such regiments number 20.000 troopers in total.

Some of it's duties are: electing a new Grand Master; discuss future battle plans; electing a new Lord Warden from the Warden Commanders available; declaring exterminatus on a planet (even the Grand Master himself needs the Council's authorisation, even thought he has the highest single rank in the whole Chapter); elect a new First Warden; and to counsel the current Grand Master on all matters he requests.

Any council member can be elected for Grand Master, with the exception of the Lord Techmarine (for his aligeances to the Adeptus Mechanicus) and the First Dreadnought.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Asturyan Wardens enjoy a reasonable stable gene-seed of unknown origins with rare mutations and deviations. This has led some to believe that they come from the Imperial Fists or the Ultramarines gene-seed, though it is uncomfirmed if that's true or not.

Chapter Recruitment

The Asturyan Wardens recruits mostly come from Kannon, the Chapter's Homeworld. However, they can also come from Reesman Secundus, but it's rare. Amongst those most favourable are those who excel at hunting and fighting Orks, those who belong to the Hunters Guild (an organisation made up of professional Ork hunters), the members of noble families (if they meet all the required standards) and those who helped fight against an Ork raid.

Those who are chosen are then taken to Castellum Invicta for the trials. They have 3 tests. Accuracy test, fight test and a strategic test. The fight test isn't to the death, meaning that at one point a victor will be declared by the attending Lord Warden of the 10th Company. The accuracy test is very important for the Chapter tries to maintain it's high levels of Space Marines with Marksman's Honours. The strategic test helps to pick those who will serve in the Asturyan Warden's Fleet if they aren't picked as new neophytes. In this case they have a second chance to serve the Chapter by applying to the Asturyan Warden's special rank called the Shipmasters. In the case they pass they become neophytes and eventually, scouts. The final trial before becoming a full-fledged Asturyan Warden is to single-handedly hunt and kill 100 Kannon native Ork Warriors and bring their heads. They only have 100 rounds of ammo and a small sword, along with their scout armor. This is considered a challenging test, for they usually run out of ammo very quickly and have to find other ways to finish their objective. During the process a Thunderhawk is watching the scout. If in extreme danger, the Thunderhawk and its Asturyan Wardens will intervene, however the test will be reproved. They can try the test again, and acording to records, never has an Asturyan Warden failed the second chance, so it's unknown what happens if they fail again.

Those who weren't picked as a new recruit or as a new potential Shipmaster can try a third chance to serve the Chapter by joining the ranks of the countless Chapter Serfs. If they don't, they will be healed of any injuries and returned home.

Shipmasters

To be a Shipmaster is the highest of honours a serf can have. These Shipmasters will serve as Captains of a ship if no Asturyan Warden is present. This is considered the highest honour beneath becoming a Warden, as the Chapter heavely relies on these human servants to carry on a space battle if they need to deploy to a planet. They are absolutely loyal, and never has a Shipmaster defected nor turned to Chaos. This is an impressive feat to such extent that even the Inquisition is impressed. They are well treated, and usually just know the basic about fighting. However, they can be compared in quality to an Imperial Navy's Captain. The highet ranking Shipmaster is called Chief Shipmaster and is usually the one who serves aboard the Apocalypse-Class Battleship Adamasthor. He is the best of all Shipmasters, and a leader to them. He represents them and guides them.

Chapter Beliefs

The Asturyan Wardens believe that their most important duties are to defend the Imperium, the Emperor and his subjects. They are resilient, stubborn, humble, honourable, secretive, compassionate and zealots. These traits make them very likable amongst the forces of the Imperium of Man.

Deathwatch Service

It's a common sight to have someone temporarily leaving the Chapter for service in the Deathwatch, the Chamber Militant of Ordo Xenos. Due to their experience dealing with xenos, particularly Orks, and their proficiency with bolters, they make suitable candidates for joining it. The Grand Master is all but delighted to see the Chapter's contribution to the Inquisition's cause. They earn experience and deepen the relations between the Asturyan Wardens and the other Chapters.

Thus, it's normal for a veteran of the 1st Company to have served in the Deathwatch. Usually those who return from the Deathwatch have a higher rank waiting for them. This was the case with the now Grand Master Mykhael. He entered the Deathwatch with the rank of Veteran Chief Warden, he came out with the rank of Deathwatch Champion because of his extraordinary skills in dueling and with the sword. Upon returning he was attributed the rank of First Warden, Chapter's Champion and Captain of the Honour Guard.

Chapter Combat Doctrine

They prefer defensive tactics, so they are used to aid beliegered worlds ready to fall to the enemy, weren't the Asturyan Wardens there. They prefer ranged engagements over close quarter combat. This is simply so because most Space Marines of this Chapter handle much better a ranged weapon over a melee weapon. This explains the above average number of Space Marines with Marksman's Honour amongst their ranks. In a fight, they usually communicate a lot with each other, enhancing their coordination. They don't seek personal glory nor honours. Each and everyone fights for the objective at hand, and to save the highest number of human lives as possible. They never yeld, and don't usually retreat. However, when they are forced do so they have a very coordinated retreat, and never leave any Warden behind. They tend to attribute any of their victories to the Emperor, and any defeat (as rare as it is) upon themselves personally. This has lead to them being very humble, and to highly respect anyone that serves the Emperor with utmost loyalty. Unlike the Space Wolves, they don't share combat stories, but rather share tactical information.

They follow the Codex in most situations, however they can change tactics at any time and at every place as they see fit. Even tough their are of defensive by nature, the 2nd Company encompasses those who are more keen on attacking. As a result, this company usually spearheads a planetary assault, alongside the veteran 1st Company.

Notable Asturyan Wardens

Grand Master Mykhael

Undoubtedly the best swordsman of the known history of the Chapter, and it's current leader. Very wise and very skilled natural leader, with a lot of charisma and persuasiveness, he never backs down and has lead his Chapter to victory in many unexpected victories. A renowed tactician, he was chosen to lead because he is considered the most "lucky", in other words, the Council of Lords believes that his touched by the Emperor's holy blessing. He is the yougest Asturyan Warden ever to hold the rank of Grand Master.

He is the only Asturyan Warden ever to be granted an audience with the Master of Manking, the Emperor himself. What happened in the Throne Room no one knows, only that Mykhael came out with an unyielding duty to protect the Imperium. The Council of Lords suspects that the Emperor ordered him to fight the Tyranids in every opportunity, for Mykhael has been seen with Chaplain Ortan Cassius, the leader of the Ultramarines Tyrannic War Veterans more frequently ever since...

Lord Warden Odysseus

Commander of the veteran 1st Company. He is know to be very calm and cool-headed during stressful situations, even for Space Marine standards. He has a healthy rivalry with Vhyrdum.

Lord Warden Vhyrdum

Commander of the 2nd Company. The most ruthless and unforgiving of all Lord Wardens, he is the best commander of assault operations of the Chapter, thus he usually commands the spearhead of a planetary assault. He has a healthy rivalry with Odysseus.

He claims to be the biggest and strongest of all the Chapter's marines not encased in a Dreadnought. This is claim undisputed.

Lord Warden Pharmenyon

Commander of the 3rd Company. An excellent naval commander, he is also Master of the Fleet. His are atributed some of the best naval battles the Chapter has ever won. A recipient of the Marksman's Honour, he wields a relic Godwyn pattern boltgun known as the Deathgiver. He is a great admirer of Lord Commander Solar Macharius and his naval prowess.

First Dreadnought Rhyannon

A Venerable Castraferrum Pattern Dreadnought, he is a former Lord Warden of the 1st Company. He is currently the oldest Asturyan Warden, being in the Chapter since M.35. He serves in the 1st Company, though due to his status, the Lord Warden usually doesn't take him to the field. Grand Warden Mykhael has Rhyannon in the highest esteem, considering him an example not only to the Chapter, but to every servant of the Emperor.

Chapter Appearance

The Asturyan Wardens are colored with dark red and dark silver grey. In their helmets they have green eyes. When a neophyte becomes a full-fledged Warden, they are given, amongst many things, a dark red cape. This is so because Kannon's climate is a constant raining one.

Chapter Badge

The Asturyan Wardens Chapter Badge is a cross in the middle of two wings. The wings represent the Emperor's protection, and the cross represents the Asturyan Wardens. Thus, the cross is known as the Asturyan Wardens Cross.

Chapter Fleet

Previously a fleet-based Chapter, and with the duty of defending many dozens of worlds and aiding hundreds more, the Asturyan Wardens have an unusual large fleet (for a Space Marine Chapter). They believe that an Adeptus Astartes Chapter can't depend on the Imperial Guard for fighting and transport. This sometimes creates anymosity between them and the Imperial Navy.

When a Space Marine Fleet is nearby, they commonly offer a helping hand because they tend to have smaller fleets. However there are exceptions, like the Flesh Tearers. Following the Euxcine Incident, and by the Ultramarines request, the Minotaurs were added to the list of unwelcome Astartes. The current known fleet is as follows:

  • Adamasthor (Apocalypse-Class Battleship) - Built in the Ring of Iron above Mars. It serves as the Chapter's Flagship, for it's the oldest and most powerful of all ships the Asturyan Wardens possess.
  • Inevitable Despair (Retribution-Class Battleship) - Used by the 1st Company.
  • Hammer of Apollo (Retribution-Class Battleship) - Used by the 3rd Company.
  • Revenant of Irathei (Battle Barge) - Used by the 2nd Company. The fastest of all Battleships, it was built in the shipyards of Irathei.
  • Charkuarum (Battle Barge)
  • Thessalyan (Battle Barge)
  • Shayenn (Battle Barge)
  • Everlasting Will (Battle Barge)
  • Fury of Khannae (Battle Barge)
  • Winged Cleaver (Overlord-Class Battlecruiser) - Claimed by the Chapter.
  • Vengence of Apollodorus (Lunar-Class Cruiser) - Offered by the Planetary Governor of Reesman Secundus.
  • Thunderdome (Lunar-Class Cruiser) - Offered by the Planetary Governor of Reesman Secundus.
  • 5 Strike Cruisers
  • 9 Vanguard Class Light Cruisers
  • 54 Gladius Frigates
  • 91 Thunderhawks
  • ~160 Drop Pods
