The Astral Bears are a Loyalist Space Marine Chapter of the Ultima Founding composed entirely of Primaris Space Marines. Despite being a relatively new Chapter of the Ultima Founding, the Astral Bears have already carved their name into the sagas of the Imperium. Through hard-fought victories during the Era Indomitus, they have defended Imperial worlds from xenos horrors and traitorous warbands alike, earning both renown and respect.

Chapter History[]

Origins[]

The Astral Bears are a rare and proud successor of the Space Wolves, created during the Ultima Founding. Their gene-seed carries the feral savagery of Leman Russ, but their culture and battlefield doctrine have developed in a direction uniquely their own. Unlike their ill-fated cousins, the Wolf Brothers, the Astral Bears have shown remarkable stability, tempered by discipline and a deep sense of duty toward the common folk of the Imperium.

Legacy of Survival[]

By the dawn of M42, the Astral Bears had fought innumerable battles against Orks, Tyranids, Drukhari, and Heretics. Time and again they have been mauled, bloodied, and left on the brink of annihilation - and time and again they have risen from the ashes, stronger than before. Where other Chapters might see defeat, the Astral Bears see only the "endurance of the hunt." To them, every battle lost is merely a wound, and every victory, however costly, is a saga to be remembered for eternity. Their sagas do not shy away from their defeats, but instead honor them, for every sacrifice is proof of their loyalty to the Emperor and His people.

Notable Campaigns[]

Battles and Bloodshed[]

  • First Blood – The War of Shattered Stars (999.M41) - The Astral Bears' first recorded campaign was the War of Shattered Stars, a desperate conflict against the Ork WAAAGH! Gorzkrakka in the Targessian Reach. The greenskin horde, numbering in the billions, poured across the sector, overwhelming entire regiments of the Astra Militarum. The Astral Bears, numbering fewer than a full Chapter at the time, answered the call. For three decades they fought a grinding campaign of attrition - defending hive cities under siege, breaking Ork sieges in savage countercharges, and at times fighting in brutal last stands. Entire companies were lost in the battles of Iron Fang Ridge and Karhuul's Maw, where the Orks' sheer mass nearly drowned the fledgling Chapter. Yet, though they bled, they would not break. In the final battle above Targess Secundus, the Astral Bears’ strike cruisers rammed the Ork Kill Kroozers head-on, crippling the WAAAGH!'s leadership. The Orks fell to infighting, and the Astral Bears claimed victory. The cost was terrible: over half the Chapter's strength was lost, including their first Chapter Master, Jorund Bear's-Claw, who fell slaying the Warboss himself. His sacrifice, however, gave the Astral Bears their first saga - a legacy of resilience carved into blood and steel.
  • The Black Maw Crusade (Unknown Date.M42) - Barely replenished from their near extinction, the Astral Bears were cast into another trial: the Black Maw Crusade, an extended war against the Word Bearers Traitor Legion in the Cyclopean Expanse. Here the Astral Bears first became renowned not only for their fury in battle, but for their unyielding defense of civilian populations. On Dymor IX, the Astral Bears refused to retreat when the Imperial Guard lines collapsed. Instead, they formed an unbreakable shield wall, holding the heretics at bay for weeks while thousands of refugees were evacuated. Casualties were staggering — the 5th Company was annihilated, its banner still honored in the Chapter’s Hall of Sagas — but their sacrifice ensured the survival of countless Imperial lives. It was in this crucible of fire that the Astral Bears’ reputation as guardians of the weak was forged. While the Word Bearers sought to break both walls and souls, the Astral Bears answered with a simple creed: “So long as we stand, Mankind endures.”

Chapter Homeworld[]

The Astral Bears hail from Urskane, a death world of endless pine forests, glacial rivers, and tundra plains stalked by colossal ursine beasts known as Ursakar. The planet’s people are hardy hunter-tribes, who prove their worth in deadly rites of passage that mirror Fenris’ wolf-hunts. Those who survive the "Trial of the Claw" - a ritual battle against an Ursakar - may be chosen as Aspirants for the Chapter. Their fortress-monastery, Ursa's Vigil, is carved into the heart of a granite mountain that looms above the world's northern ice-seas, its gates shaped like a roaring bear's maw.

Physical Size & Disposition of the Astral Bears[]

The Astral Bears are notably massive even among their Primaris brethren. On average, a battle-brother of the Chapter stands nearly as tall and broad as a Terminator-clad Firstborn - towering well over nine feet outside of armor, and even more imposing once clad in Mark X battle-plate. Their frames are exceptionally thick and heavily muscled, leading many to speculate that their gene-seed expresses unique phenotypic traits of Leman Russ enhanced by the genetic stabilisation of Belisarius Cawl's Primaris program.

Origins of Their Stature[]

Scholars of the Adeptus Biologis suggest that the Astral Bears' unusual size stems from two factors:

  1. Fenrisian Legacy: The hardy, feral adaptations of the Space Wolves’ gene-line, already prone to creating powerful physiques, may have manifested more strongly in this successor.
  2. Urskane’s Trials: The Chapter’s recruits undergo extreme conditioning on their death world of Urskane, surviving endless winters and hunting the colossal Ursakar — bear-like predators that dwarf tanks. Those who endure these trials emerge as giants among giants, their bodies hardened by both genetics and environment.

Gentle Giants[]

Despite their terrifying bulk and savage appearance, the Astral Bears are often described as gentle bear-giants when among civilians or allies. They are:

  • Kind but Silent: Few words are spoken unless necessary; their presence is reassurance enough.
  • Protective Guardians: They instinctively shield the weak, often interposing their immense bodies between civilians and enemy fire.
  • Patient Hunters: Slow to anger, but unstoppable once provoked, embodying the calm watchfulness of a bear before the strike.

It is said that when the Astral Bears march through an Imperial city, children and serfs do not flee in fear as they might before other Astartes — instead, they stand in awe of the towering "war-bears," whose quiet dignity radiates protection rather than menace. To the Imperium’s enemies, however, the same giants are the embodiment of nightmare — silent, immovable, and utterly merciless once battle is joined.

Chapter Colors[]

The Astral Bears' Chapter colors are brown, black, orange and red. the orange representing the fiery glow of dawn and dusk, symbolizing t6he unyielding spirit of the hunt. Black, the color of night, shadow and death, it represents the patience and perseverance of the predator. Red, the color of blood, both shed and spilled. it stands for the ferocity of the charge and savagery of the Bears.

Chapter Badge[]

The Astral Bears' Chapter badge depicts the profile of a feral bear's head, its jaws open in a savage roar, fangs bared in eternal defiance. The angular lines of the muzzle and ears give it a stark, heraldic quality, ensuring it is both bold and unmistakable when viewed across the battlefield. Rendered in deep black silhouette against a weathered brown field, the emblem embodies raw strength, endurance, and the primal fury of the beast.
