"We are the Angels of Anguish, forged from the sorrow and torment of our fallen father. We carry the burden of his legacy and the honor of his blood. We stand as the guardians of humanity, unfaltering in our duty and unyielding in battle. We fly towards victory in the name of Sanguinius!"
—Seraphinius

The Angels of Anguish is a semi-Codex Astartes-compliant Loyalist Successor Chapter created from the gene-seed of the ancient and heroic Blood Angels Chapter during the 2nd Founding. As successors of the Blood Angels, they inherit the genetic flaws of their gene-sire Sanguinius. Additionally, they suffer from a unique third genetic flaw: deafness. Despite their unique challenges, the Angels of Anguish have adapted and overcome them through innovative tactics and resourcefulness. This reclusive, void fleet-based chapter is constantly on the move, seeking battle glory among other fleets and ships.

The Angels of Anguish stand apart from their fellow successors due to their unique devotion to and practice of martial arts, which is a core aspect of their culture. This focus on martial arts goes beyond mere battle preparation; it is a way of life that helps them channel their inner turmoil and control the madness caused by their genetic curses. Through disciplined combat, the battle-brothers can mitigate the effects of these curses. This martial discipline extends to their crew, fostering a well-trained, united, and camaraderie-rich environment through regular training sessions and sparring matches. Renowned for their exceptional skill in unarmed combat, the chapter has a strong culture of competition, particularly in dueling and hand-to-hand fighting.

The teachings of their founder, Seraphinius, who instilled a warrior culture and the principles of the discipline, have deeply influenced the Angels of Anguish. These principles continue to shape their beliefs and practices well into the 42nd millennium. Facing new challenges from extragalactic alien threats and the introduction of Primaris Space Marines, the fledgling Chapter Master Zerafin Serahylon stands ready to lead his chapter through these trials and guide them to glory.

Chapter History

"By my hands, let it fly. By my feet, let it sweep. May all strike true."
—Angels of Anguish mantra

The Beginnings

  • Self-Imposed Exile - The Angels of Anguish were established during the tumultuous 2nd Founding. In the wake of the Horus Heresy, the Blood Angels Legion dissolved into several successor chapters, one of which was led by a young former Erelim from the Angel's Tear of the First Sphere Order named Seraphinius. Seraphinius, training to be an Ikisat, known as the "Burning Ones," revered Sanguinius as a father figure and aspired to join the elite Sanguinary Guard to protect the Blood Angels' Primarch. However, Horus' betrayal and Sanguinius' death consumed Seraphinius with sorrow and a sense of failure. Ashamed and anguished by the loss of the Great Angel, Seraphinius, along with members of the Angel's Tear, fled to the Eastern Fringe in a self-imposed exile. Despite their shame and guilt, they remained fiercely loyal to Sanguinius' memory and were determined to establish a new chapter to honor his legacy. After seven years of wandering, Seraphinius was chosen as the first Chapter Master of the newly-formed Angels of Anguish. Under his leadership, the chapter quickly gained a reputation as a fierce and uncompromising force, dedicated to defending the Imperium and upholding the values of courage, honor, and sacrifice.
  • Second Founding - Guided by Azkaellon, the sole survivor of Sanguinius' Sanguinary Guard, the Blood Angels Legion was reshaped during the Second Founding to preserve their traditions and identity. In the early 31st Millennium, following the Horus Heresy, Roboute Guilliman, the Primarch of the Ultramarines, reformed the Imperium by dividing existing Space Marine Legions into 1,000-man chapters, preventing any single commander from wielding excessive power. This decree led to the creation of the Angels of Anguish, one of the successor chapters of the Blood Angels Legion. Grieving the loss of their Primarch Sanguinius, who fell at the hands of Horus during the Siege of Terra, the Angels of Anguish emerged with Seraphinius, an Arch-Erelim of the Blood Angels Legion's First Spear, as their inaugural Chapter Master. Shortly after their formation, the Angels of Anguish embarked on an Imperial Crusade, leaving Terra to eradicate Traitor forces and purge Chaos infestations from Imperial worlds during the Great Scouring. Equipped with the newly refitted Battle-Barge Eternal Prince, their mobile fortress-monastery, the Angels of Anguish quickly earned a reputation for their brutal close-quarters combat prowess. However, the genetic flaws of the IXth Legion began to manifest following Sanguinius' death. Throughout this period, the Angels of Anguish remained in a perpetual state of crusade, relentlessly eliminating any Heretics they encountered. Those who opposed them were swiftly defeated, leaving no trace of heresy behind.
  • Silence in the Blood - Born out of sorrow and haunted by their past, the Angels of Anguish have endured immense struggles, bearing the weight of their failures. Like their brethren in the Flesh Tearers, they have been driven to commit atrocities in their anguished state. Consumed by shame and guilt for their inability to protect their beloved Primarch from Horus' betrayal, they continued their self-imposed exile, seeking redemption and a way to honor their fallen gene-sire. Under Seraphinius' leadership, the Angels of Anguish established themselves as an uncompromising force, dedicated to defending the Imperium and upholding the virtues of courage, honor, and sacrifice. However, their struggles persisted, and the burden of past failures weighed heavily upon the young chapter as they grappled with their inner demons and the immense challenge of living up to Sanguinius' legacy. The inherent flaws of the Blood Angels' genetic heritage frequently manifested in combat, often bringing them to their knees. Undeterred, Seraphinius, driven by his sense of duty, vowed to find a solution to end the madness plaguing his brothers. With silent determination, he led the tormented chapter to new heights, despite the hardships they faced.
  • Enlightenment through Martial Harmony - As the Angels of Anguish continued their ceaseless crusade, their path led them to Jeinakamoto, a feudal world steeped in ancient traditions and martial prowess. Seeking vital supplies, Seraphinius encountered Lord Hosannaka Heika, the esteemed Hanshi Grandmaster of Jeinakamoto. From the moment they set foot on the planet, Seraphinius and his Chapter were captivated by the Jeinakamese dedication to martial arts and Zen principles. The principles of Fudoshim (the immovable mind), Mushim (the state of no-mind), Shoshim (the beginner's mind), and Zanshim (the lingering spirit) taught the Angels of Anguish resilience, clarity, open-mindedness, and focus. Immersing themselves in Jeinakamoto's rich culture, the battle-worn Space Marines found solace and transformation in the intricate movements and philosophies of the planet's martial arts. The Angels of Anguish discovered not only supplies but also camaraderie and shared purpose with the people of Jeinakamoto. Recognized as kindred spirits, the Space Marines shared their combat expertise, forging a unique bond between the two worlds. The newfound relationship allowed for the chapter to recruit for potential aspirants to help bolster their ranks with strong warriors. Through this cultural exchange, the Angels of Anguish began to heal and find a way to deal with their struggles. Embracing Zen principles brought them moments of tranquility amidst their turmoil. Their dedication to discipline and self-mastery instilled a renewed sense of purpose and clarity, enabling them to confront their inner demons. The Angels of Anguish, now intertwined with Jeinakamoto's warrior culture, became ambassadors of enlightenment and martial harmony. Inspired by Lord Hosannaka Heika, Seraphinius vowed to carry their shared wisdom into the stars. With newfound purpose, the Chapter continued their crusade with renewed determination, guided by the principles that had become integral to their being.
  • Forging a Legacy through Blood, Sweat, and Tears - Despite the chapter's growth, Seraphinius still carried the heavy burden of his past failure. To start anew, he renamed his personal Honor Guards to the Sanguinim. These skilled warriors trained tirelessly with Seraphinius in hand-to-hand combat and various martial arts, developing distinct styles with unique flair and elegance. Friendly competitions among the Sanguinim showcased their skills and pushed them to new heights. Despite the fierce competition, Seraphinius always stood out, his skills honed to perfection. However, the curse of the Blood Angels was not far behind. As the battle-brothers continued to train, they too experienced the effects of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage. In response, the Angels developed a unique form of individual training called the Blood Kata. This choreographed pattern of movements, designed to be practiced alone or in groups, aimed to calm their inner demons and temporarily resist the curse. Seraphinius and the Sanguinim devoted themselves to mastering the Blood Kata, determined to overcome the curse that threatened to consume them. The movements became second nature, providing them with the mental fortitude needed to resist the curse's pull. Over time, the battle-brothers became known for their exceptional combat prowess and dedication to the Chapter's cause. Their mastery of the Blood Kata allowed them to maintain control, even in the heat of battle. Seraphinius and the Sanguinim continued to train, perfecting their craft and pushing themselves beyond their limits. Their warrior spirit and devotion to the Chapter made them true sons of Sanguinius.
  • Development of the Baalken Style - The Baalken Style, developed by the Angels of Anguish in the early days of Seraphinius, is a unique sword fighting style emphasizing a balance between physical technique and mental fortitude. Characterized by fluid yet controlled movements, Baalken allows practitioners to attack and defend in a single motion. They are taught to use their whole body in their movements, focusing on footwork, stance, and posture, harnessing their energy and channeling it through their sword, striking with the power of a hurricane. Often considered one of the most elegant and deadly forms of sword fighting in the galaxy, the Baalken Style originated from a need to expand the chapter's recruiting pool. After centuries of relying solely on their own recruiting efforts, Seraphinius reached out to the feudal world of Tenriken, known for training warrior knights. Initially wary, the leaders of Tenriken agreed to a deal: in exchange for training and arming their warrior knights, the chapter would receive young warriors as potential Space Marine recruits. This partnership brought a unique mix of combat styles to the chapter, enriching their martial tradition. Over time, the warrior knights who became Space Marines were highly respected and revered within their own culture. This relationship led to the development of the Baalken Style, allowing the chapter to maintain a steady influx of recruits and retain their strength throughout the millennia.
  • Sorochael's Requiem - During a mission in a large, abandoned space installation on an asteroid, Seraphinius and his men were ambushed by a heretic warband. Trapped and unable to call for reinforcements due to heavy radio interference, the Angels of Anguish found themselves in a dire situation. As the heretics closed in, Seraphinius made the difficult decision to order a retreat, hoping to regroup and find a way to make contact for reinforcements. First Captain Sorochael, understanding the gravity of their predicament, volunteered to stay behind and hold off the enemy, giving his brothers the precious time they needed to escape. With clear focus, Sorochael took his position, his master-crafted bolter firing with unerring precision. Despite the overwhelming numbers of heretics, he stood firm, each shot striking true and felling his foes. As his ammunition dwindled and finally ran out, Sorochael did not falter. He switched to hand-to-hand combat, his fury and determination evident in every strike. He took down numerous heretics with his bare hands, each punch and kick delivered with lethal intent. But eventually, the sheer numbers overwhelmed him. When Seraphinius and his men returned with reinforcements, they found Sorochael's lifeless body surrounded by the enemies he had slain. His empty bolter lay beside him, a silent testament to his final stand. Anguished by the loss of his beloved brother, Seraphinius was consumed by grief and rage. He swore vengeance then and there, leading his men in a relentless purge. They scoured the installation, rooting out and killing every last heretic hiding within its depths. The sacrifice of Captain Sorochael became a legendary tale within the chapter, a story of ultimate dedication and bravery. Seraphinius declared Sorochael's master-crafted bolter a sacred relic, naming it "Sorochael's Prayer." His selfless act not only saved his brothers but also inspired them to carry forward his legacy, reminding them of the true meaning of honor and sacrifice.
  • Dai Shiai, the Great Tournament - In the late 31st millennium, Seraphinius decided to host the first tournament, the Dai Shiai, known as the Great Tournament outside the Chapter. The Angels of Anguish, competitive fighters by nature, sought to test themselves further. The tournament was intended to celebrate strength and skill, bringing together the greatest warriors of the Imperium. Invitations were sent to chapters across the galaxy, and participants soon arrived. The tournament was held aboard the Angels of Anguish flagship, Eternal Prince, chosen for its large arena and natural beauty. The ship's crew were thrilled to host such a prestigious event and ensured its success. They retrofitted a massive stadium-like arena, decorating it with banners and colors representing each participating chapter. The tournament was a spectacle of martial prowess, featuring contests in unarmed combat and sword fights. The battles were fierce, with warriors pushing themselves to their limits. Spectators cheered and celebrated, witnessing incredible displays of strength and skill. In the end, a warrior from the Angels of Anguish emerged victorious, defeating all challengers and claiming the first championship. The victory was a proud moment for the chapter, cementing their reputation as some of the greatest warriors in the Imperium. The tournament became a bi-centenary event, with chapters eagerly awaiting their invitation to compete again.
  • Fall of the Weeping Seraphim - The passing of the beloved Chapter Master, Seraphinius, marked a significant moment in the chapter's history. Leading the Angels of Anguish for over a thousand years, Seraphinius guided the chapter through isolation in the vastness of the void. Despite numerous hardships, the Angels of Anguish flourished as a fleet-based chapter under his reign. His eventual passing at the beginning of the 32nd millennium left a profound impact, but the legacy of Seraphinius and his warrior spirit continued to inspire the chapter.

Post Seraphinius

  • The Reunion - After the passing of Seraphinius, the chapter grieved deeply. The newly appointed Chapter Master, Xoriel, faced the daunting challenge of lifting his chapter's spirits and filling the enormous shoes left by his predecessor. To reignite the passion of his brothers, he declared a voluntary penitent crusade. The chapter ventured deep into unknown space, seeking out heretics to eradicate. For nearly 100 years, they waged war against the forces of the arch-enemy. Eventually, they encountered a large unknown heretic force, which Xoriel saw as their final test. The battle proved overwhelming, and after suffering heavy losses, Xoriel ordered a strategic retreat to preserve the chapter's legacy and the teachings of Seraphinius. They managed to escape and eventually return to Imperial space. Despite the heavy toll, the chapter felt they had proven themselves, having eradicated numerous foes. Upon their return, they reconnected with the Imperium, ending their period of isolation from Seraphinius' reign. Imperial records information were updated, crediting Xoriel with spreading the legend of Seraphinius and his deeds. For the next few centuries, Xoriel and his brothers continued to honor their founder, spreading the heroic deeds and stories of their chapter.
  • Thrice Damned - Following the heavy losses from the Penitent Crusade, the Angels of Anguish needed to replenish their ranks. They decided to use the genetic material of Seraphinius, which resulted in a new generation of warriors embodying the likeness of both their founder and their Primarch, Sanguinius. However, some of these new Space Marines experienced partial or complete hearing loss. The chapter faced a tough decision and chose to keep this condition within their ranks. They continued to train these afflicted brothers, assigning them roles where they could best serve. Initially, this was a significant challenge, leading to high mortality rates in combat. Over time, however, it was observed that these Marines exhibited increased strength, speed, and reaction time. To address the hearing loss, the chapter developed specialized communication devices, training techniques, and hand signals to ensure effective coordination in battle. They also emphasized heightened observance and alertness among their battle-brothers. Despite this unique challenge, the Angels of Anguish have continued to succeed on the battlefield, proving that their disability has not hindered their effectiveness.
  • The Fall and Rise - In the late 37th millennium, the Angels of Anguish faced one of their darkest moments. The emergence of the Lucifern Rift brought with it a massive fleet of Chaos Space Marines and Daemons. The Angels of Anguish fleet were thrust into a relentless and brutal assault. The chapter fought valiantly, but the Chaos fleet's sheer numbers and ferocity were overwhelming. Despite their best efforts, the Battle Barge Sanguine Silence was lost, and with it, a symbol of the chapter's strength and unity. The loss struck deeply at the heart of the chapter. The surviving marines, driven by a burning desire for revenge, vowed to eradicate the heretics and protect the Morningstar Sector from any emerging threat. Following the battle, the chapter urgently needed a new Battle Barge to support their fleet operations. With limited resources and time, they devised a daring plan. Through careful intelligence and scouting, they located an uncorrupted Battle Barge operated by a Chaos Warband that slipped by into the sector from the Lucifern Rift. Despite the risks, the chapter assembled a large boarding team comprising many of their most experienced warriors. Eventually after a grueling battle, they managed to capture the vessel. The ship was renamed Sanguine Sorrow, serving as a solemn reminder of their loss and a testament to the pain and sacrifice they had endured.

Recent History

  • Sandelphon's Ascension - The Angels of Anguish had many great leaders over the course of millennia, but one stood out above most. The history and exploits of Chapter Master Sandelphon are well regarded in the annals of the Angels of Anguish. Formerly the First Company Captain, Sandelphon led the chapter to numerous victories over their enemies and xeno threats. His reputation grew significantly after an event known as the Eternal Battle in 713.M41. During this dark period, the chapter's prized flagship, the Eternal Prince, was infected and overrun by a Genestealer Cult. The ship had been sent to investigate a distress signal from a seemingly abandoned Imperial world in the Eastern Fringes, only to fall prey to the insidious cult. The battle that followed was a prolonged and grueling conflict. Genestealer hybrids turned the Eternal Prince into a nightmarish labyrinth filled with deadly traps and ambushes. The Angels of Anguish fought relentlessly within the cramped corridors of their once-proud vessel. Despite suffering heavy losses, including the death of Chapter Master Mitatron, the chapter never thought once to give up their flagship. Captain Sandelphon emerged as a heroic figure, leading the devastated and struggling chapter to victory and reclaiming their flagship. This monumental effort propelled Sandelphon into the position of Chapter Master. As the newly christened Chapter Master, Sandelphon dedicated himself to rebuilding and restoring his beloved chapter. His fierce loyalty to the Blood and his deep-seated hatred for Genestealers and Tyranids, who had claimed the life of his predecessor and beloved brother Mitatron, drove him to respond immediately to Dante's call to aid the defense of the Blood Angel's homeworld against Hive Fleet Leviathan. Understanding the gravity of the situation, Sandelphon took most of the chapter to Baal, save a few companies whom were already deployed on other missions prior. In preparation for the impending battle, Sandelphon quickly filled the ranks due to recent casualties by promoting many Space Marines, including young neophytes, to full-fledged Astartes. Upon arriving at Baal, he strategically deployed members of the 5th, 8th, and 9th Companies to assist in defending the Arx Angelicum walls. Sandelphon himself, along with the remaining available forces, took to the heavens to fight alongside Brother Bellerophon of the Blood Angels. The Angels of Anguish fought with unparalleled ferocity, their combat skills honed by their devotion to martial arts. Sandelphon was immensely proud of his brothers' valor and resilience. However, the battle against the Great Devour proved costly. The chapter suffered extreme losses, including Sandelphon himself, whose life was claimed in the fierce fighting. The chapter's fleet was mostly destroyed, and their ground forces were nearly decimated. It was only with the timely arrival of Roboute Guilliman and the Unnumbered Sons that the tide was turned.

  • Rise of the Everlasting Seraphim - Zerafin Serahylon's rise began as an aspirant, where he distinguished himself through exceptional skill and leadership. A true prodigy, Zerafin won the Blood Brawl trial, a grueling martial arts competition that serves as the first real stage of their recruitment process. During the final trial, the Rite of Fire, he led nearly all the aspirants to victory, ensuring their survival through his natural leadership abilities. An unprecedented result never seen before in chapter history. His humility and grace earned him the admiration and respect of his brothers. Not long after becoming a neophyte, Zerafin and his fellow aspirants were promoted to full-fledged Astartes by the command of Chapter Master Sandelphon. Recognizing his potential, Sandelphon promoted Zerafin to Sergeant of the 8th Company's first squad. Despite feeling unworthy of such an honor, Zerafin was convinced by his brothers that there was no better choice. He steeled his resolve and vowed to lead them to the best of his abilities. Zerafin's first major combat experience came during the defense of the Arx Angelicum walls on Baal against the Tyranid horde in 999.M41. He and his brothers faced unimaginable horrors and witnessed extensive loss. As the fortress walls fell and the situation grew dire, Zerafin and a few remaining survivors managed to hold out until reinforcements arrived. Despite his significant contributions during combat, Zerafin humbly attributed his survival to luck and the skills of his brothers. Following the devastating battle and the loss of Chapter Master Sandelphon, Zerafin was virtually promoted to Chapter Master overnight. Although he felt there were better candidates, the older and more experienced members of the chapter saw Zerafin as the perfect leader to bridge the gap between the Firstborns and the newly introduced Primaris Marines. As Chapter Master, Zerafin Serahylon has ushered the Angels of Anguish into an era of renewed strength and unity. His leadership during the Devastation of Baal and his ability to integrate Primaris Marines into the chapter have cemented his legacy as a heroic figure within the chapter ushering them into further greatness during Era Indomitus.

  • Martial Discord - In the aftermath of the devastating events on Baal, a new chapter in the history of the Angels of Anguish unfolded. With the integration of Primaris Space Marines into their ranks, tensions arose as these newcomers struggled to grasp the deep-rooted martial traditions, culture, and way of life that defined the chapter. The seasoned Firstborn warriors, steeped in the ancient traditions of the Blood Angels and bearing the weight of their Primarch's legacy, found themselves at odds with the Primaris brothers who seemed disconnected from their chapter's history. The discord exposed a fundamental clash between the perspectives and experiences of the Firstborn and Primaris Marines. The Firstborn, having fought countless battles and bearing the scars of the Imperium's darkest days, held a deep understanding of the chapter's traditions and revered Sanguinius' sacrifice. Their experiences and connection to their gene-seed forged a unique brotherhood bound by shared hardships. On the other hand, the Primaris brothers, though genetically superior, struggled to comprehend the intangible aspects of the chapter's martial way. They lacked the personal connection to the legacy of Sanguinius, having been created long after his time. Their unfamiliarity with the rites, rituals, and ancient techniques of the Angels of Anguish caused frustration and discord among the ranks.
  • Strength in Unity - Serahylon recognized the urgent need for reconciliation and understanding within the ranks. He implemented intensive training and mentorship, pairing Firstborn veterans with Primaris initiates to foster mutual respect and appreciation for the chapter's rich heritage. To bridge the divide and cultivate unity, he organized Martial Communion, a remarkable intra-chapter tournament showcasing the combat styles of Firstborns and Primaris Marines. The Firstborns' seasoned skill and knowledge shone through, revealing their strategic prowess in ancient techniques. Witnessing their triumph, the Primaris brothers gained a newfound appreciation for the chapter's martial heritage. They humbly embraced the teachings of their brethren, recognizing the importance of respecting their combat expertise rooted in the chapter's history. Martial Communion marked a turning point in the Angels of Anguish's history, fostering unity and strength under Serahylon's leadership. Through shared experiences and dedication to tradition, the chapter stood unified, drawing strength from its diverse ranks, and diminishing the disharmony that once plagued them.

Notable Campaigns

  • Great Scouring (014-021.M31) After the catastrophic events of the Horus Heresy, the Imperium became a shattered remnant of its former glory. During this time, Roboute Guilliman's Codex Astartes was implemented, leading to the fragmentation of the remaining Space Marine Legions. The strength of these legions was dispersed across the Imperium. Within the Blood Angels Legion, guided by Azkaellon, the lone survivor of Sanguinius' Sanguinary Guard, a pivotal decision was made. The Blood Angels Legion was restructured, giving rise to the Blood Angels Chapter and their successors from the Second Founding. Azkaellon played a crucial role in safeguarding the timeless traditions and identity of all of the chapters of the Blood, ensuring their perpetuity. Amidst the turmoil, the primarchs debated fiercely on preventing a repeat of Horus' rebellion, while defeated traitors and resurgent xenos races preyed upon loyal worlds. However, the Imperium retained enough power to seek brutal retribution against its foes. There was no room for forgiveness for the crimes committed by the Traitor Legions. Those who now governed in the Emperor's name were unable and unwilling to prevent a war of retaliation. As the era known as the Great Scouring dawned, Seraphinius and his warriors engaged in numerous campaigns. They tirelessly hunted down worlds sympathetic to Horus, ensuring that anyone who threatened the Imperium's future and sought to plunge it into anarchy was found, prosecuted, and executed.
  • Seraphim Storm (459.M31) Seraphinius and his Chapter was called upon by the Mechanicus to aid in the defense of a vital Forge World, Horicoln, in the Eastern Fringe. Seraphinius, known for his tactical expertise in void warfare, successfully held off a large Ork fleet, buying the Mechanicus enough time to complete crucial repairs on their Forge World's planetary defenses. In gratitude, the Mechanicus gifted the Seraphinius with an old Exorcist Grand Cruiser stating it would better hands. The Grand Cruiser, named the Seraphim Storm, became integral parts of the Angels of Anguish's fleet. Its superior firepower allowed the chapter to take on and even outgun most threat in the void including heavily fortified enemy positions. It was the perfect ship to compliment the chapter's fleet as a long range escort. However, the gift of the Grand Cruiser came with a price. The Mechanicus requested that the Seraphinius provide assistance in their future conflicts. Though the chapter was hesitant to agree to such a binding arrangement, they ultimately accepted, recognizing the importance of maintaining good relations with the Mechanicus of Horicoln.
  • First Black Crusade (781.M31) Seraphinius and the Angels of Anguish were assigned to the defense of a crucial Imperial starbase in the Segmentum Obscurus. The base was a critical resupply point for Imperial forces operating in the region, and its loss would have severely impacted the Imperium's war effort. The Chaos forces assaulting the base were a mix of Traitor Marines and renegade human forces, supported by a horde of daemons. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Angels of Anguish fought with ferocity on all fronts and held the line until reinforcements arrived, ultimately ensuring the starbase's survival and securing the Imperium's foothold in the sector.
  • First Cherubic Crusade (697-700.M35) The crusade was a joint effort by the Angels of Anguish, Carmine Angels, and Mourning Cherubim to defeat an Ork WAAAGH! led by Warlord Snaggrakka da Planet Krumpa in the Cherun System. After nearly three years of brutal fighting, the Angels of Anguish released their Death Company members onto the Ork horde, turning the tide of battle. The Orks were defeated, but at a high cost of many Space Marines lost.
  • The Silent Shattering (737.M37) The chapter encountered a massive heretic fleet that spawned from a rift after a tear in reality opened plunging the sector into darkness. Engaging in a large-scale void battle, the Angels of Anguish were overwhelmed and suffered heavy losses, including the destruction of the Battle Barge Sanguine Silence.
  • Second Cherubic Crusade (233-235.M40) The Angels of Anguish , led by Lord Commander Seraphicus, were called upon once again to defend the Cherun System from a rampaging Ork WAAAGH!
  • First Tyrannic War (745.M41) The chapter makes first contact with the Tyranids when Hive Fleet Behemoth invades the Eastern Fringes. The Angels of Anguish were among the Space Marine Chapters that participated in the First Tyrannic War, fighting against the Tyranids in the Eastern Fringe. The Chapter fought alongside other Imperial forces in a fierce campaign to repel the Tyranid invasion, engaging in numerous battles and skirmishes across several worlds. The Angels of Anguish proved to be a formidable force, using their expertise in close combat and their unbreakable resolve to hold back the relentless Tyranid swarm. Despite suffering heavy losses, the Chapter emerged victorious, and their battle honours include the eradication of several Tyranid splinter fleets and the preservation of numerous Imperial worlds from the ravenous devourer.
  • The Eternal Battle (713.M41) The chapter investigated a distress signal from an abandoned Imperial world in the Eastern Fringes. Upon arrival, the Eternal Prince was overrun by a Genestealer Cult, infesting the ship. A prolonged battle ensued as battle-brothers and neophytes fought to reclaim their vessel. Despite heavy losses, including Chapter Master Mitatron, Captain Sandelphon led the chapter to victory, becoming the new Chapter Master. The ship was heavily damaged and required extensive repairs.

  • Devastation of Baal (999.M41) The Angels of Anguish played a crucial role in the Devastation of Baal against a massive Hive Fleet Leviathan invasion that threatened to wipe out the entire Blood Angels Chapter and their successors. The Angels of Anguish were one of the many successor chapters who answered Dantes' call for aid, and they fought with incredible bravery and ferocity alongside their brothers. Led by their Chapter Master, Sandelphon, the Angels of Anguish assisted in a series of daring counter-attacks against the Tyranids in the void, buying precious time for the Blood Angels and their allies to strengthen their defenses. Although the Angels of Anguish suffered heavy losses in the fighting, their steadfast determination and selflessness in the face of overwhelming odds earned them the undying respect and gratitude of Dante, and the Blood Angels and their successors.
  • Battle of Behl-Sarit (M42) Following the Devastation of Baal, the Angels of Anguish, led by Chapter Master Zerafin Serahylon, answered a distress call from their cousin chapter, the Dawn Seraphs, on the desert world of Behl-Sarit, where they fought a desperate battle against a Tyranid splinter force of the Leviathan Hive Fleet. As the xenos threatened to overwhelm them, Archein Eumenes and the Dawn Seraphs’ elite arrived, turning the tide and securing victory. Though the battle was won, the growing divide between Firstborn and Primaris Astartes remained unresolved, leaving both chapters to confront the challenge of reforging their brotherhood in the new age.
Angels of Anguish Last Stand

Lord Commander Zerafin Serahylon rallying his brothers, inspiring Captain Sarsmoliel and his 5th Company to stand resolute against the onslaught of the Tyranid swarm during the Battle of Behl-Sarit.

  • Indomitus Crusade (999.M41 - Concurrent) The Angels of Anguish played a significant role in the Indomitus Crusade, particularly in the war against the Great Devourer. They fought bravely against the swarm, defending worlds and battling countless waves of the alien menace. The chapter's tactical acumen and ferocity in combat earned them a reputation as some of the most effective and ruthless warriors in the crusade. The Angels of Anguish also made a name for themselves by hunting down and eliminating key synapse creatures, disrupting the Tyranids' coordination and weakening their offensive capabilities. Despite suffering significant losses, the chapter remained resolute and steadfast in their determination to rid the galaxy of the Tyranid threat.
  • Deadhenge Disturbance (M42) - Captain Sarsmoliel leads his Company from the Angels of Anguish to the wastelands of Deadhenge. There, Sarsmoliel hunts looters from the March of Flames, following intel from his brothers in the Heart Rippers Chapter. Sarsmoliel soon discovers a Negavolt cultist and former electro-priest commanding the local heretics and confronts her. However, Sarsmoliel’s assault goes awry when he’s forced to engage the cultist in a challenge. Too late does he realize the nature of the threat she poses: the cultist reveals herself to be a daemonhost and psyker, immolating Sarsmoliel’s right hand with warpflame; the rest of him is spared only when the purity seals around his forearm prevent the fires of Tzeentch from spreading. Then, the Olympian Daemonhost Elena Annard offers Captain Sarsmoliel a place at her side: if he becomes her partner, Tzeentch shall heal his hand and hearing; should Sarsmoliel accept, the Lord of Sorcery will grant him dominion over Deadhenge, to shape into an empire. Sarsmoliel rebukes Elena, but cannot best what she has become; only the glorious intervention of the 5th Company’s Champion, Leondriel, forestalls Sarsmoliel’s fate. Sarsmoliel’s Champion and Honour Guard force Elena and her apostles into a fighting retreat; the encounter concludes with the heretics vanishing into the Warp and Sarsmoliel recalled to his Chapter’s Chaplaincy.

Chapter Organization

As semi-adherents of the Codex Astartes, the Angels of Anguish divide their battle brothers among the chapter into companies. There are ten companies in the chapter, each led by a Captain guarded by elite veterans known as the Honour Guard. The only exceptions to the Codex structure allowed by the Blood Angels and its Successors are the Sanguinary Guard and the Death Company.

Specialist Ranks

  • Chaplains - The chapter has a unique approach to the role of Chaplains, as they focus entirely on guarding against the horrors of the Black Rage and providing psychological support to those who succumb to it or the equally dangerous curse of the Red Thirst. The Chaplains duties also include safeguarding the Chapter's secrets, upholding its beliefs, and monitoring the mental health of their brothers. The Reclusiarchs, the highest-ranking Chaplains, oversee the Chapter's most sacred shrine, the Reclusiam. Situated in the heart of the Battle Barges, the Reclusiam is adorned with relics and banners of past glories, and it serves as the location for important ceremonies. The rosters of the Chapter's achievements, great victories, and legendary heroes are also preserved here.
  • Death Company Chaplains - The Chaplains who leads the afflicted Death Company, the Forfeited, into battle inspiring his fallen brothers with a litany of anguish and vengeance, urging them to make their sacrifice meaningful before their inevitable demise. As a spiritual warrior, the Chaplain serves as a guiding light for those lost to the Black Rage, leading them to glory and honour in death. He is a beacon of sanity amidst the chaos of battle, the calm in the eye of the storm, and the last thing many of his enemies see before meeting their savage end.
  • Sanguinary Priests - The Angels of Anguish Priests are the guardians of Sanguinius' blood, and they serve as the medics for the Chapter, as well as being partially responsible for spiritual guidance. The sermons and rituals of the Chaplains in the Chapter encourage their brethren to renounce their inner wrath, while those performed by the Priests implore the Angels of Anguish to embrace the Red Thirst and bring it under their control. This enables them to harness its strength to bolster their own during dire moments of battle. Like other Apothecaries, the Priests prioritize preserving the Chapter's gene-seed above all else.

Line Ranks

  • Veterans - Includes Terminators, Centurions, Sternguard Veterans, and Vanguard Veterans, & Veteran Sergeants.
  • Sergeant
  • Battleline/Tactical - The backbone of the Chapter's fighting force lies in their Battleline Squads - the most numerous and strategically versatile warriors. The Tactical squads are trained to be flexible, capable of pressing forward with fierce attacks or holding positions with devastating firepower. They are the first to engage in battle and are expected to maintain the front line against all odds. Composed of the most experienced Space Marines of a Chapter, aside from the elite Veteran units, Battleline Squads are made up of warriors who have honed their skills in a variety of combat situations, having previously holding rank in Assault and Devastator Squads.
  • Fire Support/Devastator - The Devastators of the chapter are comprised of older and battle-hardened Marines who have honed their skills in the Assault Squads, as the majority of Angels of Anguish prefer close combat over long-range engagements.
  • Close Support/Assault - Due to the mostly aggressive style of warfare of the Angels of Anguish, Neophytes, after graduating, join the ranks of Assault Squads, rather than the Devastator Squads, as is demanded in the Codex Astartes.
  • Neophyte/Scout

  • The Forfeited (Death Company) - The Angels of Anguish Death Company, known as 'The Forfeited'. The Angels of Anguish Chapter deviate from the Codex Astartes in a significant way with the presence of the Forfeited, their Death Company. This is not a part of the standard organization of ten companies, but is instead composed of Astartes who have fallen prey to the psychosis of the Black Rage. These ferocious and uncontrollable berserkers are led by a Priests or Chaplains, who are the only officers capable of exerting any measure of control over them. The Death Company is aptly named, as its members are regarded as walking dead by their brethren. Despite grievous wounds that would fell even a Space Marine, the Death Company fights on with unstoppable ferocity.
  • Sanguinim (Sanguinary Guard) - Serves as the personal Honour Guard of the Chapter Masters of the Angels of Anguish.
  • Honour Guard - Serves as the personal Honour Guard to the leaderships of the chapter.
  • Anguishim – A veteran Space Marine with a Jump Pack wielding Double Power Fist. Usually serves as a vanguard shock assault.
  • Arashim - An Assault Terminator with Double Power Fists with Knuckleduster-like modifications. Usually serves as a vanguard shock assault.

Combat Doctrine

Masters of hand-to-hand fighting with extensive use of power fists, the Angels of Anguish excel in brutal melee combat and specialize in shock assaults. Void-ship corridors and urban warfare, involving breaching and boarding actions, are consequently their most common theatres of war. The Chapter's Battle-Brothers believe that such intense engagements serve as the ultimate test of a Space Marine's skills, strength, and agility; thus, the Angels of Anguish take great pride in their ability to orchestrate-- and prevail in-- cityfights and void-battles. In fact, the Chapter's Chaplaincy preaches that there is a distinct honour and glory in directly confronting one's opponent with fisticuffs (that cannot be found in ranged combat). Therefore, an Angel of Anguish's training includes a variety of martial arts, combat sports, and techniques drawn from various sources, to enhance their performance in close combat. Furthermore, the Chapter's formations are designed to quickly close the distance with the enemy and engage in melee combat, often accompanied by terrifying war cries and battle hymns that strike fear into the hearts of their opponents.

Whilst the Angels of Anguish pride themselves on their proficiency in close-quarters combat (CQC), the Chapter by necessity has accrued much experience in close-quarters battle (CQB), or close-range firefights. Angels of Anguish usher their battle-brothers into melee with precise close range marksmanship and the surgical application of overwhelming firepower utilizing the Vajra Pattern Bolt Pistol, allowing squads to rapidly seize control of enclosed areas with speed and efficiency. In CQB & CQC scenarios, friendly and enemy personnel often intermingle, requiring the Astartes to exercise extreme caution; the importance of such careful conduct is only exaggerated by the presence of non-combatant personnel nearby. For this restraint, the Angels of Anguish are viewed favorably by the Imperial Guards, who often call upon the Chapter before other Astartes of more callous repute.

Boarding Actions

Angels of Anguish revel in the thrill of close combat within void-faring ships, their mastery of boarding actions exhibited on enemy vessels, space hulks, and fortified stations. That chapter will prioritize and seek out battle within these ships and confined quarters within the stars. Their combat doctrine regularly involves Caestus Assault Ram, Thunderhawks, and boarding torpedoes: a formidable transport in the Angels' arsenal, the Assault Ram punches through the hull of a hostile ship and disgorges Astartes that clear the spacecraft in mere minutes; meanwhile, lighter and less maneuverable boarding torpedoes swiftly deliver the Emperor's Angels of Death from a distance and prove far more difficult to intercept, due to their small profile. Once inside, Angels of Anguish swiftly breach enemy strongpoints with specialized demolition charges and cutting tools, carving a path through thick walls and armour plating. Then, the Astartes lean on speed and efficiency to overwhelm the enemy: darting from room to room, their squads clear bulkheads and bunkers with explosive force and efficacy. When breaching an enemy ship, the Angels of Anguish prioritize the bridge and engine room, to quickly wrestle control of the vessel and immobilize it. Once the objective is secured, they systematically clear the rest of the ship, rooting out any pockets of resistance and potential threats.

Chapter Culture & Beliefs

Martial Arts

The Angels of Anguish are a most unusual chapter within the Blood Angels' Successor Chapters, as they incorporate martial arts into their training unlike any other chapter. As highly devoted martial artists they believe that the discipline, focus, and physical conditioning required for martial arts make them better warriors and enhance their ability to control the curses. The chapter has developed their own unique style of martial arts, and practice various arts focusing on distinctive combat techniques. The recruits of the Angels of Anguish train in a variety of martial arts, each with its unique strengths and techniques. They study and practice Anguijitsu, Seraphrike, and Sanguinudo. By mastering these different styles, the recruits become versatile and adaptable fighters, able to adapt to any situation in the Blood Brawl arena and in real combat against any given foes. Additionally, they can practice all of the arts in a detailed choreographed pattern of movements called Blood Kata which can be practiced alone. It can also be reviewed within groups and in unison when training. It is practiced as a way to memorize and perfect the movements being executed. The Space Marine use Blood Kata as a way to stay focused and help control their urges. The Angels of Anguish place a strong emphasis on unarmed combat and dueling, with every battle-brother expected to master at least one form of martial arts. The battle-brothers of the Angels of Anguish are often seen wrapping long purity scrolls around their armour, resembling martial artists bandaging their hands before a fight. These scrolls symbolized their dedication to their martial path and the preservation of their chapter's traditions, serving as a tangible reminder of their commitment to their legacy.

  • Anguijitsu - A grappling art that teaches how to take down and submit opponents using joint locks and chokes.
  • Sanguinudo - A grappling art that focuses on using an opponent's momentum and force against them.
  • Seraphrike - A striking art that uses punches, kicks, elbows, and knees to attack opponents.

In addition to being a form of combat training, martial arts are also an integral part of the chapter's culture and entertainment. The chapter regularly hosts dueling tournaments and exhibitions of martial arts, not only as a way to hone their skills but also to showcase their culture and connect with other chapters. The chapter's mastery of martial arts has also gained them a reputation as formidable opponents in close combat, and other chapters often seek their expertise in hand-to-hand combat. The Angels of Anguish see martial arts as more than just a means of combat or entertainment. It is a way of life, and a philosophy that guides them in their daily lives. They believe that the discipline and focus required to master martial arts can be applied to every aspect of their lives, including their spiritual and emotional well-being. In this way, martial arts are not just a tool for combat, but a path to enlightenment, self-control, and self-improvement.

Warrior Zen

The Angels of Anguish draw deeply from the warrior culture of Jeinakamoto, instilling the principles of Warrior Zen throughout their lives. These teachings emphasize discipline, resilience, and mindfulness, becoming a core part of their daily routines and combat practices. Even into the 42nd millennium, these principles remain integral to the chapter’s beliefs and culture.

  • Fudoshim, the immovable mind, taught the Angels of Anguish the importance of resolve and resilience in the face of adversity.
  • Mushim, the state of no-mind, helped them find clarity and calmness in the midst of chaos.
  • Shoshim, the beginner's mind, allowed them to approach every situation with open-mindedness and a thirst for learning.
  • Zanshim, the lingering spirit, instilled in them the awareness to remain fully present and focused in each moment.

Artisans

Despite their cultural differences from the parent chapter, the teachings of Sanguinius remain deeply ingrained in the Angels of Anguish. The chapter deeply values artistic expression, with many battle-brothers finding solace in painting and sculpting. These practices serve as meditation and a way to honor their Primarch who was known for his artistic talents. The Eternal Prince is adorned with artworks depicting the chapter's heroes, sacrifices, and battles. Art is not just a pastime but an integral part of the chapter's identity, fostering unity and continuity with their heritage. Collaborative art projects strengthen bonds among the battle-brothers, providing another therapeutic outlet amidst the demands of war.

Chapter Recruitment

Training

The Angels of Anguish bolsters their Space Marine ranks through competition and trial onboard the Eternal Prince. The Chapter will recruit young pre-pubescent and pubescent boys from within the fleet and from the feudal world Tenriken and Jeinakamoto when they become of age of at least 10 Terran years. The aspirants will undergo training in all the martial arts, sword fighting, and combat training for one year. During this time, they are watched and assessed by the chapter, and if one is not deemed worthy during that time they are to be taken away. To some aspirants, this is a better life than before as they are well taken care of and well-fed, so they are usually well behaved in the hope of not risking the chance of being taken away. During the yearlong training, many of the aspirants form close bonds and camaraderie with each other. The aspirants will eventually partake in one final testing where they must demonstrate the techniques and knowledge they have learned before proceeding to the first stage after the yearlong training.

First Stage – Blood Brawl

The Trial of Blood Brawl serves as the first stage of the Angels of Anguish recruitment. This grueling competition puts the recruits' martial arts and hand-to-hand combat skills to the test. As the chapter members gather to witness the matches, they are entertained and assess the potential of the recruits. Only the most skilled and determined individuals can advance to the next stage. The tournament is structured as a 64-man single-elimination bracket that's used to determine the two competitors who will compete in the final for first and second place by weight categories. The repechage bracket is built from competitors who were knocked out by the finalists and building brackets to determine third place. The Repechage addresses the possibility of two top competitors meeting in an early round, allowing the loser a chance to compete for third place. There are typically ten to twelve 64-man brackets during the Blood Brawl, and only the top eight placers will be able to proceed to the next stage.

  • Strife of Silence - However, the journey to become a full-fledged member of the Angels of Anguish is not without its challenges. Aspirants are given two opportunities to place in the first stage, and those who fail to make a mark in the first tournaments face a difficult decision. They can either serve the chapter as a thrall or participate in the Strife of Silence, a life-or-death competition that is considered the final test of one's bravery and skill. Typically, only one Strife of Silence takes place following the Blood Brawl.

Second Stage – The Rite of Fire

The Second Stage of the Angels of Anguish recruitment process is a grueling test of skill and determination. With a cohort of around 100 aspirants who were placed from the previous stage, the aspiring Space Marines must embark on a perilous mission to breach the enemy lines. Their objective: to penetrate the inner sanctums of an enemy starship, typically a well-armed human renegade or pirate craft and overcome all resistance. The chapter will find a lone ship that they will deem worthy for the trial by disabling it so that the aspirants may board the ship via Thunderhawks or Caestus Assault Rams. The trials do not end with the elimination of hostile forces, however, as the aspirants must also seize the ship bridge. The success of this operation requires a near perfect balance of strategic prowess, martial finesse, and unshakable resolve. This stage of trial, known as the Rite of Fire, separates the weak from the strong, leaving only the most deserving aspirants to earn their place. Many aspirants do not survive this stage, and those who survive are forever anguished by the loss of their close friends from training.

Final Stage – Apotheosis

Once the Second Stage is completed, the surviving aspirants are accepted as Neophytes of the chapter. They begin the final stage, the transformation process to become full Space Marines, undergoing rigorous biological and cybernetic enhancements. This marks the start of their apotheosis as a Space Marine of the Angels of Anguish Chapter.

Chapter Gene-Seed

The Angels of Anguish possess a unique genetic flaw that sets them apart from many other Space Marine Chapters: a very small percentage lose their hearing during the process of becoming a Space Marine. This flaw was discovered after using Seraphinius' gene-seed to raise new generations of battle-brothers. Seraphinius kept this flaw hidden from his brothers, fearing scrutiny or being seen as defective. It is unknown how this flaw developed, though some speculate it occurred due to the radiation from Baal that was missed in the Apothecaries' initial scans. This flaw is believed to stem from a mutation in their gene-seed, which causes a degradation of the Lyman's Ear inner sensory cells. As a result, a small percentage (approx. 5%) of Angels of Anguish Space Marines will suffer partial or complete hearing loss, even if they have not sustained any physical injury to their ears. To compensate for this weakness, the Chapter has developed specialized communication devices, training techniques, and hand signals that allow their Marines to effectively communicate and coordinate with each other in the heat of battle. The Chapter also places a strong emphasis on training their battle-brothers to be highly observant and alert to compensate for their lack of auditory awareness. It has been observed that the small percentage of Space Marines that end up deaf are noticed to have increased strength, speed, and reaction time. Despite this limitation, the unique disability has not hindered their success on the battlefield.

Primarch's Curse: Twin-Flaws

The Blood Angels and their Successors bear a heavy burden - the twin genetic afflictions of Sanguinius, commonly referred to as 'The Flaw'. These curses manifest in the form of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage. It's been speculated that the Flaw is a result of genetic mutations in the Legion's Omophagea organ implant, coupled with the psychic turbulence that accompanied Sanguinius' demise. During the Horus Heresy conflicts on Terra and Mars, the gene-seed imprint of the Blood Angels was lost, leaving the IX Legion with no other option but to retrieve the required gene-seed from their deceased Primarch's body for their post-war restoration efforts. Tragically, all Space Marines generated from this gene-seed were fated to succumb to the Flaw.

Red Thirst - Every Scion of Sanguinius harbors an intense and destructive urge deep within their psyche - a thirst for blood and battle frenzy that must be constantly repressed. While most Battle-Brothers can manage to control this Red Thirst, there are instances where some have succumbed to its alluring call during the heat of combat. This inner turmoil is both the Scions' darkest secret and their greatest curse, yet paradoxically, it also holds the key to their salvation. The Red Thirst instills a sense of humility and self-awareness in the Scions, making them the most noble of all Space Marines.

Black Rage - The legacy of Sanguinius' demise or the demonic "wound" inflicted upon Signus Prime continues to haunt the Blood Angels and their Successor Chapters. This psychic imprint has the potential to drive them to madness and unleash the same rage that consumed Sanguinius during the Battle of Terra. When a brother falls prey to this impurity, they are promptly placed in stasis aboard the Battle Barge Sanguine Sorrow. If necessary, they may be called upon as a last resort measure and formed into Death Squads to fight on the front lines until they are either slain or the enemy is defeated.

Deathwatch Service

Throughout their long history, the Angels of Anguish have provided a number of their battle-brothers to serve the Deathwatch. Despite their fearsome reputation as skilled xenos hunters, their devotion to Sanguinius has caused both admiration and concern. Nonetheless, the Angels of Anguish service to the Chamber-Militant is a force to be reckoned with. These battle-brothers are fierce warriors, unflinching in their commitment to fighting the xenos threat wherever it may be found. And though they may be seen as overly fanatical by some, there is no denying the power of their faith in Sanguinius, which has carried them through countless battles against the alien menace.

Notable Members

  • Seraphinius – Founder and first Chapter Master of the Angels of Anguish Space Marine Chapter.
  • Sorochael – The inaugural 1st Company Captain and close friend of Seraphinius who was originally a member of the Angel's Tear of the First Sphere Order.
  • Xoriel - The successor of Seraphinius, served as the second Chapter Master of the Angels of Anguish.

Chapter Fleet

The Angels of Anguish fleet composition is an interesting one. Like most fleet-based chapters, they employ the use of Battle Barges, Strike Cruisers, Vanguard Cruisers, and various Escorts; However, the Angels of Anguish has a grand cruiser in service. It may be a ship of older design, but it have been retrofitted with the latest technologies to keep up with the current ship of the line. The chapter follows a rare fleet pattern known as the "Nomad-Predation" pattern, which is used exclusively by chapters operating for extended periods outside of the Imperium's borders. Unlike the conventional Crusade Chapter pattern, which imitates the old Space Marine Legions, this pattern allows the Angels of Anguish to function as a self-contained force without relying on support from the Imperium. Their fleets are constantly on the move, only pausing to attack targets that pose no threat to their viability as a fighting force. The chapter will only employ seven cruisers that is commanded by the first seven company captains, whom are referred as the Seven Archangels. The eighth, and tenth captain is stationed on the Battle Barges. The ninth captain, Lord of Storm, is stationed on the Seraphim Storm.

AoA Eternal Prince Space Hulk

The Eternal Prince in orbit of the space hulk Phantasmagoric Sorrow.

  • Eternal Prince (Battle Barge) - Flagship of the Angels of Anguish and serves essentially as the Chapter's mobile Fortress-Monastery. The Eternal Prince was a Emperor-Class Battleship that was converted into a Battle Barge to support the chapters operational needs. It has since been retrofitted and updated with the latest technology following the "Eternal Battle" in the 39th millennium. The Eternal Prince still displays its huge original golden monument relating to the Imperium atop the bridge. The monument is an angel striking with his fist.
  • Sanguine Sorrow (Battle Barge) - Stolen from an unknown chaos warband in the 37th millennium. The second battle barge will typically hold most of the chapters armoured vehicles, and the entire Death Company in stasis onboard.
  • Sanguine Silence (Battle Barge) - Destroyed in the 36th millennium.
  • Seraphim Storm (Exorcist Class Grand Cruiser) - The Eternal Prince's permanent escort, which was gifted by the Mechanicus in the 31st millennium.

Chapter Relics

Zerafin Serahylon & Captain Vilheim (with helmet)

Zerafin Serahylon, equipped with the Spear of Anguis, and Captain Vilheim of the Omni-Legion fight through a horde of Genestealers onboard the Space Hulk Phantasmagoric Sorrow.

AoA Tyberiel

Chapter Champion, Tyberiel, equipped with the Bloodstone Fist relic.

  • Spear of Anguis - The Spear of Anguis is the most revered relic of the Angels of Anguish chapter, crafted when Seraphinius became Chapter Master. Designed in the likeness of Sanguinius' own Telesto spear, this weapon is a masterpiece of artistry and craftsmanship. The blade glimmers with a subtle, otherworldly golden radiance, hinting at the potent power it holds, while the shaft features intricate engravings and carvings. The spearhead, rumored to be forged from rare auramite imbued with the essence of the Primarch's blood, possesses a razor-sharp edge capable of slicing through the toughest armor. Its needle-like point can penetrate even the smallest chink in an enemy's defenses, making it a formidable weapon in battle. However, the true power of the Spear of Anguis lies in its profound spiritual significance. Passed down from one Chapter Master to the next, the Spear of Anguis symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of their founder. It serves as a constant reminder of the duty and honor all chapter members are sworn to uphold. When wielded in battle, the spear inspires acts of heroism and selflessness, driving the Chapter Master to fight on even in the face of impossible odds. The Spear of Anguis is more than a relic; it is a living symbol of the chapter's values and heritage, embodying the spirit of Seraphinius as the Angels of Anguish confront the challenges of the present and future.
  • Archangel's Shard - A magnificent blade wielded by Sanguinius during his fateful battle against Horus. Sadly, the blade shattered against the Warmaster's corrupted armour. However, the fragments of the shattered blade were carefully collected and used to forge new Power Swords, each one bestowed upon a distinct Successor Chapter of the Blood Angels.
  • Sorochael’s Prayer - Sorochael's Prayer is a revered storm bolter that once belonged to the legendary Captain Sorochael, who wielded it until his death. The machine spirit of Sorochael's Prayer always strikes true, delivering devastating shots against enemies and xenos alike. Firing this blessed storm bolter invigorates the mind of its bearer, honing his discipline to ruthless and efficient skill.
  • Goblet of Tears - The Goblet of Tears is an ancient and revered relic of the Angels of Anguish Chapter, crafted from golden metals and adorned with dark blackened crystal, believed to be by Sanguinius himself during the Great Crusade. This artifact symbolizes the chapter's history of grief and resilience. Originally, the Goblet of Tears collected the tears of the Angels of Anguish during their moments of deepest sorrow. Chaplains used these tears to anoint the armor and weapons of fallen brethren, believing it would transfer their strength and courage.
  • Silent Respite - The Silent Respite is a revered shield relic of the Angels of Anguish, passed down through generations of battle-brothers. Its origin dates back to the chapter's early days during a mission to purge a Chaos cult. Seraphinius and his librarians discovered the ancient artifact, a device emanating both a dark presence and a powerful protective force. Seraphinius brought the device to the chapter's Forge Master, who crafted it into a shield while enhancing its protective properties with the librarians' psychic warding spell and Seraphinius' own blood, ensuring it could only be wielded by those of Sanguinius' bloodline. It emits an aura of silence, dampening sound and allowing its wielder to stay alert to any threats. During the final battle against the Chaos cult, Seraphinius used the Silent Respite to shield his battle-brothers, leading them to victory despite being heavily outnumbered. Since then, the Silent Respite has been wielded by the chapter's most honorable and trusted battle-brothers.
  • Bloodstone Fist - Legend has it that the Bloodstone Fist was crafted from a meteorite that crashed on the planet where the Angels of Anguish were conducting a campaign against a horde of Orks in the 31st Millennium. The Chapter's Techmarines identified that the rock contained a rare mineral with unique properties, and Seraphinius ordered the creation of a power fist out of it. The Bloodstone Fist was believed to be imbued with the blood of Sanguinius, and the Chapter's Librarians infused it with their psychic energy to increase its power. When the wielder of the Bloodstone Fist strikes an enemy, the fist pulses with a red glow and emits an intense radiation of heat and steam from the piston. The Bloodstone Fist has since become one of the most prized relics of the Chapter, passed down from one Chapter Master or Chapter Champion to the next.

Chapter Appearance

Chapter Colours

The Angels of Anguish primarily wear a halved-colour scheme with the right half of their armour being painted dark purple and their left side being painted jet black. The Imperialis or Aquila worn on the plastron (chest guard) is gold in colour. Special ranks and formations are the exception to the standard colour scheme to indicate their roles in the chapter.

  • Sanguinim (Sanguinary Guard) wear armour that is completely golden in colour, with a set of large off-white wings, and many Chapter markings usually in purple and accoutrements all over their armour.
  • Sanguinary Priests will have a halved-colour scheme with the right half of their armour being painted white and their left side being painted black.
  • Librarians wear a halved-colour scheme of blue and black.
  • The Forfeited (Death Company) varies significantly from their brethren's overall colour scheme; their armour is repainted coal black, with dark purple saltires (crosses), symbolizing the sacrifice of their gene-sire Sanguinius at the hands of the Arch-Traitor Horus.

The Chapter is identified by the main body colour and the icon on the left pauldron.

  • Sergeants of the Angels of Anguish squads have red shoulder guards with black edges, rather than the black colourization of their squad mates.
Angels of Anguish Firstborn Sergeant

Angels of Anguish Sergeant of the 2nd Company "Nikyu".

Senior Angels of Anguish’s command personnel bear more ornate versions of their company markings.

  • Lieutenants will brand the colour of their Company on the shoulder guards with a red vertical stripe down the middle beneath the gold decorations.
  • Captains will brand a gold shoulder guard with ornate gold decorations.

Decorations

The Angels of Anguish chapter are a competitive force by nature, and the Space Marines will create and wear ornate medals and decorations hanging around their armour to commemorate a significant victory in battle, or placement in tournaments.

Heraldry of the Host

The Chapter's icon is proudly worn on the left shoulder pauldron while the right bears a blood drop, the colour and number of drops which designates a battle-brother's assigned company in lieu of the usually-proscribed Codex Astartes markings.

The following is a list of how each company represents itself:

Angels of Anguish Armorial Array

Angels of Anguish Company markings

  • 1st Company (Veteran): A black Crux Terminatus or a single black blood drop over purple background on the right shoulder plate. On Terminator (Tactical Dreadnought) Armour, the left shoulder plate shows the 1st Company's specific heraldry, the right shoulder guard displays the Chapter badge in black (red for Sergeants).
  • 2nd Company (Battle): A single golden brown blood drop.
  • 3rd Company (Battle): A single purple blood drop.
  • 4th Company (Battle): A single blue blood drop.
  • 5th Company (Battle): A single white blood drop.
  • 6th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin black blood drops, side by side.
  • 7th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin golden brown blood drops, side by side.
  • 8th Company (Reserve Assault): Twin purple blood drops, side by side.
  • 9th Company (Reserve Devastator): Twin blue blood drops, side by side.
  • 10th Company (Scout Marines): The Angels of Anguish's Scout Company wears a pair of white blood drop on the right shoulder plate, and the Chapter badge on the left.

Helmet Markings

An Angel of Anguish’s strategic role is indicated by their helm’s colour, showing where they fit into the Chapter’s wider organization:

Angels of Anguish Helmet Markings

  • Gold Half - Denotes Veteran/Honour Guard/Command
  • Purple Half - Denotes Battleline/Tactical
  • Blue Half - Denotes Fire Support/Devastator
  • Yellow Half - Denotes Close Support/Assault

The Captain's helmet may brand more ornate decorations in addition to the skull such as a laurel or additional blood drops. The Sergeant's helmet will brand a skull marking on the forehead, but the helmet will not be gold unless it is a veteran.

Squad Markings

Unlike most other Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, the Angels of Anguish squad markings comprise a single symbol worn on the right knee guard similarly to the Blood Angels Chapter.

Chapter Badge

The Angels of Anguish's Chapter badge takes the form of a black coloured winged skull with a pair of blood drops dripping down like tears.

Notable Quotes

By the Angels of Anguish

"As the Sons of the Great Angel, we have suffered devastating losses countless times. Our hearts have been anguished with sorrow. Our cries of anguish go unheard. We are tormented with sorrows, but today it shall no longer hold us down! Despite the misery, we shall rise above! Spare the sympathy! We are the Angels of Anguish."
—Seraphinius moments before leading his troops into battle
"My fellow brothers... Sons of Sanguinius... For many years, we have fought against the enemies of the Imperium, shedding our blood and sacrificing our lives for the cause of humanity. But we have also faced challenges from within our own ranks, as some have questioned our methods and our faith. But today, I ask you to stand with me once more, as we reaffirm our commitment to the legacy of the Blood Angels. Our forefathers founded our Chapter to be the defenders of the Imperium, to fight against the horrors that threaten to tear apart the galaxy. And though we have faced many foes, we have always emerged victorious, strengthened by our faith and our determination. But we have also been tested by the curse that runs through our veins, the curse that threatens to consume us with every battle. Thrice damned. Yet we have not faltered. Instead, we have embraced our curse, using it to become stronger and more resilient. We have trained ourselves in the art of martial combat, honing our skills until we are unmatched in battle. And we have learned to control our curse, to use it as a weapon against our enemies. Just as Seraphinius has done millennia's ago. Today, I stand before you to declare that we are once again united. Our enemies, both within and without, shall hear our voice, and they shall know that we will be ignored no more. For we are the Angels of Anguish, defenders of the Imperium, and now is our time to shine. With our fists and our swords, we shall strike down the enemies of the Emperor, and we shall emerge victorious once more. Sons of Sanguinius, now is the time to show the galaxy what we are made of! For our Father, we fly!"
—Zerafin Serahylon shortly after becoming the newest Chapter Master of the Angels of Anguish following the events of the Devastation of Baal.
"In the depths of anguish and sorrow, we find our greatest strengths. For it is through overcoming pain and loss that we rise, stronger and more determined than ever before. We are the Angels of Anguish, and we will conquer our adversity and emerge triumphant!"
—Alucardon Slaine
"The burden of anguish and loss is a heavy weight to carry, but I will endure it, for the sake of the blood that runs through my veins."
—Tyberiel before entering the Strife of Silence

About the Angels of Anguish

(Feel free to add your own quote about the Angels of Anguish)

"In my centuries of service, I have met but two warriors who I knew were better than me. The first was a xenos warrior, an Eldar Autarch; never in my life have I crossed blades with something so quick, so precise. She would have killed me were it not for the intervention of my brothers. The second was not on the field of battle but in cooperation; a meeting of astartes to share culture and build bonds of brotherhood. I agreed to spar without weapons with a warrior from a chapter I did not know, though I knew them to be sons of Sanguinius. I had supposed then that I would have the opportunity to share my chapter and my culture's millenias of martial arts, its tradition and my mastery. I even considered, perhaps arrogantly, restraining myself lest I embarrass this new ally. Heh. I was on my back twice, in thirty seconds. "
—Zhou Fang, Grandmaster of Technique of the Astral Dragons
"Understand this, child, I speak not with the ignorant opinion of an outside observer. I have seen their minds, and touched their souls. on Tyrellis IV I joined a coven of librarians, working together to dispel foul sorcery summoned be heretical sorcerers. In those moments of desperation, when the world is tearing itself apart and a dark reality you cannot begin to comprehend pushes against ours like a swelling cancer, there is not room for private inhibitions or uncertain restraint. In that moment, my mind touched that man you call Alucardon Slaine, felt his soul as we ceased to be separate beings. I have seen the nature of these Angels of Anguish, the deep well of rage, boiling over as it mixes catastrophically with an endless tide of sorrow, all of it trapped within an invincible steel box of focus and discipline. Know this, the blood of the Brightest One flows in these angels, and you are right to fear them, for they are tempest, barely contained."
—Chief Librarian Joachim the Elder of the Optimus Legion, cautioning a disrespectful governor.
